Monterey Fish Company is located at the end of the pier. They have free parking close to their shop. Otherwise, you will need to pay if you park at the beginning of the pier. Our friends were hoping to buy some black cod/sable fish but they did not have any on their menu board. My first time coming here was a few months ago. We bought a dozen oysters, 2 different types. The lady who helped us showed us how to pick them out. Very helpful! We also bought some ahi tuna. Both were fresh. We had a good experience. Then I came here last week and purchased a pound each of scallops and halibut. Both were fresh and also a little pricey. Finding fresh raw seafood, even right off the water, isn't easy with a mixed bag of retailers with varying degree of quality control. I'm 2 for 2 at Monterey Fish company. Came in today to buy a 1 pound piece of Monterey Bay salmon. They couldn't figure out how to get me a 1 pound piece. They gave me a piece that was 13 1/2 ounces and overcharged me by 10%. Go to Sea harvest much more honest and just as fresh. it's easier to get to and the people are more friendly. called and talked to the owner who is no help whatsoever. I am a very experienced fisherman myself so I know what good fish should look like. Unfortunately this place does not meet that bar and I would not recommend it to anyone. Quite a number of the fish that they have for sale is well past its prime and not worth it at all. I am concerned by this business being able to sell what they do and staying in business for as long as they have. Free parking at end of pier, in front of the store. There is a board in front of the store listing their sales for the day. The best deal I found was fresh sardines at $5 per pound.  Can't find this offering at the local supermarkets. Grilled it at home with some salt and it was excellent.  Who knew fresh sardines were so good.  Wish I had bought more. read more

Stopped by here to check their selection of fresh seafood. I'm used to what the Los Angeles and San Diego area seafood establishments offer and was surprised to find close to nothing here. As far as fish- they had fresh sablefish and rockfish and a few other items. Prices seemed fair for what you get but if you're looking for a large variety of items- I didnt see it. read more

I went to Monterey Fish Company specifically for the live crab which I was told they would have a fresh shipment on Thursday and Friday at 10:00 AM. I got there at around 11:30 on Friday and the lady at the counter said that they only had steamed crab for sale and the live crab was sold out. I asked if the crab was steamed today (Friday) and she re-assured me that it was. (I am thinking, "How could it have been delivered, cooked, and chilled on ice within 1.5 hours all on the same day?) Trusting that the crab was fresh, I decided to buy three of them and took them home right away. I live locally, so it only took 5 minutes from Ice to refrigerator. I was so excited to dive in and eat so that evening I opened one up and noticed right away from teh smell that it was bad. After cleaning the guts out and removing the top shell I noticed that the meat in the body had a greyish tint to it perhaps from sitting in murky or polluted water. I opened up the other two and the same grey flesh was seen in the body of all three crabs. I spent about $65.00 on crab that I had to throw away and the smell was awful. I am not sure how to go upon bringing back the smelly crab for a refund or even if I want another in exchange. I will definitely be finding another source for crab. The lady could not even tell me when they would have more live crab delivered and I would never buy it cooked from this location ever again. Save your money and wait until you can buy it fresh of the boat. You can find boats parked at "K" dock that have fresh fish for sale. read more

We came here just to browse around then we decided to buy one small sable fish for $8/lb. It was very small fish but the lady charged us for $26.10 for a very small fish! I think the lady that weighed the fish cheated on us! No, we are not coming back here. Located at the very end of the pier with parking in front of the store. My first time buying and cooking squid! Reasonable prices. It does smell fishy, but I think it is more from the concrete floor surface and aged wharf setting. Would like to rate it higher, but strangely most of the seafood is not local. I chose the Black Cod because it was from the area. Maybe it was because it was towards the end of the day, but the staff weren't the most enthusiastic. After living in the Monterey area now for almost 3 years I am finally getting into the fresh seafood purchasing! This spot is easily found as it is near downtown Monterey and at the end of a wharf. If it is open, that means there if fish! I noticed a ton of fishing boats in the bay and decided to see what was available here as the fresh catch. I was not disappointed. I purchased a slice of King salmon so fresh it didn't smell at all! The freshness is outstanding here! I even saw a fish wriggling on the ice pack whem I walked in. Of course you need to read the labels of the seafood because not all of it is from the Bay. Before entering they post a sign out front that states the fresh fish available. I was here a few weeks prior to this time and purchased a large fresh salmon filet. I have to say, the salmon I purchase here is top quality, 5 star food! I am so lucky and blessed I can drive down here to purchase it. They give you a bag of ice on top of your fish to keep it cool. But of course it is best to go home asap and put in the fridge. You can drive down the pier and park outside the market, but I usually park and walk. It is also a gorgeous spot to take a short stroll. The staff has always been helpful and friendly. Of course they are practicing social distancing and only allow 2 customers at a time inside the store. The cost is so worth the freshness, I paid $14.40 for 1 king salmon filet, and $40 for a pound and a half salmon, for three people, but... omg! Consider how much it would cost to go to eat an absolutely fresh piece of salmon. Like, three times as much! If you live here, if you're visiting, head here to buy yourself whatever the fresh catch is! Next time I might even try fresh squid. Cheers and happy eating!! read more

Despite what other reviews are saying they do sell some fresh fish here. That said most of the fish here is previously frozen and this is no more than a glorified seafood section of your neighborhood grocery store. The staff here are not pleasant most of the time. The larger Hispanic gentleman is often grumpy and does not answer you when you address him. I've come here on occasion where he might say hi and be somewhat pleasant but in general he is just not A customer focused individual. The woman seems more cordial but in general neither of the two staff here are gonna win any awards for friendliness. Pricewise you're better off going to Costco. There's a wholesaler around the corner name Robbie that you could check out and often he will sell to private consumers. But mostly he's a wholesaler for restaurants and it is fresh fish. I'm adding an extra star because of the ambience. I like coming down to the wharf. Otherwise it would just be a one star experience FYI- this is the algorithm I use for my reviews. All of my reviews are between one and four stars. I start with one star default. I add a star based on value/price. I add another star if customer service warrants. Monterey is known for squid because they catch them commercially in the mid to late summer in Monterey Bay. They had a squid festival back it the day. The Monterey Fish Company has always been my go to place to buy market squid. During the summer you can often buy fresh squid at a pretty low cost. The rest of the year they have frozen squid but it is better quality and a little less expensive than the frozen squid sold in a 3 pound box. They also sell frozen squid steaks. This is our favorite place to go when we are in Monterey to pick up fresh seafood. The seafood is always fresh and the employees are always friendly and helpful. On our six day stay we came by twice to get delicious seafood. I highly suggest going earlier in the day as they seem to be less busy than if you wait till the end of the day. On our stay in Monterey we were grilling our seafood outside and several people stopped by and asked us where we got our seafood and we happily sent them out to the Monterey Fish company to get some of their own. read more
