Monterey Municipal Wharf is a nice place to walk around and enjoy the scenic view in Monterey and look out to the Pacific Ocean! Very calm and serene. We were fortunate to have good weather this weekend 2-15-25, as all week long it rained in San Jose. You can enjoy the beach or fish from the pier. Beautiful little wharf to visit. A couple of minutes drive from downtown Monterey. There's plenty of meter parking. There's one unisex bathroom before you walk down to the beach. You can do some surfing or swimming in the water but let me warm you the water is cold. We brought our tent, chairs, music, beach toys, and hang out there for a couple of hours. The beach got really crowded around noon as the weather gets a little warmer. There are restaurants on one side of the wharf but we didn't eat there. We drove into town to check some other restaurants. read more

I used to hit up the Yacht Club with an old friend of mine and her parents, good times. Also, when a friend docked his private boat in Monterey, we partied at this wharf. Again good times. Fun Fact: I can bark like a sea lion. No joke. read more

If you're looking for something to do in Monterey besides go to the aquarium, the wharf is a safe bet. We took my niece here while she was visiting and she loved it. There's plenty of room on the beach if you want to lounge or if you feel like renting a bike and biking around, there's room for that too. A few restaurants are around here as well if you want to soak up the sun and grab a bite to eat as well. It's a good spot to bury someone in the sand or walk along and watch the boats go by. Best of all, you may be able to score street parking if it's not too busy. I'd stop here again. read more

Next to the ever-popular Fisherman's Wharf, this underrated cousin wins me over because it is not as full of people and has many more animals around it. If you walk out to the end of the wharf, on most days you will see sea lions laying (and barking) on the planks below you, more sea lions swimming, more sea lions basking on buoys, and birds and otters also swimming. The animals frequent the wharf since the fishing boats come up to the wharf to deliver their catches (and sometimes throw food to the animals). Some of the fish markets on the wharf are also worth visiting, if you decide you would like to eat some very fresh seafood. read more

I love the Monterey Wharf. It's so much fun to go try samples of Clam Chowder and go into the different shops. You can also get fishing charters at the end of the pier and catch a whale watching cruise. I love to feed the seagulls also. They are always having festivals right next to the wharf which is a great place to take your kids. Last weekend there were lots of booths with otters and shark teeth and all kinds of things about whales. There also lots of great restaurants to eat at and it's fun just to walk around. For tourists: Monterey has two wharfs. One is Fisherman's Wharf and the other is called Municipal Wharf. Q: Garsh, I am so confused. How kin I tell the difference? A: FW has no fishermen on it. They are all on the Muni Wharf. Q: What is on FW? A: Lots of barkers that hand you little cups of free clam chowder. If you stop at each one, you will get about a full cup of free clam chowder. Q: Well, I has six kids so that would save on going to McDonald's. A: Sure. Just be aware that this soup has been out in the sun for hours... Q: Shoot, I leave food out for longer than that all the time. A: If they catch you mooching, they will throw you under the wharf. Q: They wouldn't do that! A: Yeah? Well, one restaurant offered its customers pagers. They couldn't figure out why those patrons and the pagers were disappearing. They hired a diver who found a bunch of pagers under a rival restaurant... Q: No way! A: Way. Q: Can I fish off FW and catch my own dinner? A: No. Nothing edible is alive under that wharf. People fish off of Muni, although they did block off the place where I used to fish as a kid. Q: What's on Muni Wharf? A: There is a cafe sort of place, used to be called Joe's Boat Hoist as they have a crane out back to lift boats. Nice place. You can sit outside and eat squid and eggs. Right next to it, but under the wharf a bit is the Sandbar, a more upscale restaurant that I like as well. Q: Squid? Can I jus get pancakes? A: Sure. Q: My kids git bored a lot. Is there anything to entertain them? A: At the end there is a big commercial building and there are fish markets in it that sell fish. The kids will like seeing the whole fish with their googaly eyes. Of course they will never eat fish again, but that will save you money.. Q: All they eat is fruit loops anyway... A:.. dependiing on the season there are commercial boats unloading their catch. Lots of action with baskets of fish being hoisted up, trucks carrying big blocks of ice, lots of noise and color. And you can pretty much hang out there to watch if you don't get in the way and your kids aren't obnoxious and falling off the wharf and all. And, there are people fishing off the wharf, casting out to catch various fish at different times of the year. Kids like to watch that. Q: My wife gets drunk and falls into the water when she wears just a T-shirt all the time... A: She looks pretty buoyant , actually... Q: Kin I park my RV there? A: Actually, believe it or not, you can actually drive out onto the wharf and park there. Normal vehicles at least. Q: What else is there to do? A: You can walk along the harbor to Fisherman's Wharf and check it out and buy the kids candy and a cheap stylish jacket to cover up your wife's rather startling wet t-shirt. And then you can walk (note the theme) along the beautiful rec trail to Cannery Row and buy more candy and stuff there. This is tiring enough so that the kids will crash and... Q:...yeah, the missus will like that cuz she always bugs me about, you know, when we go on vacation... read more

Almost all the restaurants here offer free samples of clam chowder. After enticing you to go inside, you find out that a small bowl of the same chowder costs upwards of $11. You would probably get the same amount of chowder if you just walked up and down the wharf twice, grabbing free samples from each restaurant. It would be a lot more enjoyable too. All the restaurants try to promise you the freshest, most unique seafood. When it comes out (whatever it is you ordered), you'll find that it's mostly over-buttered and lacking in edible meat. Bottom line: Refrain from buying anything in this area. Just walk it, enjoy the limited sightseeing, and eat some free chowder. read more

A SUP paddler's perspective: large sandy beach with a shallow entrance makes this a wonderful place to paddle. It may just be dumb luck, but every time I paddle here, the waves were not too large for me to tackle, in fact they were merely "ripples" making beach entry into the water effortless. Wildlife is abundant here, so expect to see seals, birds, fish, otters, dolphins and even whales if the season is right! There is a kayak rental store on the beach as well, so no need to own your own equipment... read more

One of Monterey's few wreck diving sites is located a stones throw away from this Wharf. Given that I haven't dove it in the better part of a decade, I don't know what condition it's in, but there is a sailboat down there. Speaking of wrecks, the Mythbusters shot the ping pong salvage myth at the end of this Wharf, which, at least to me, is rather nifty. read more

A beautiful beach beside the wharf! A varied group of people. Some of them looked a little sketchy. We enjoyed the shade trees on the edge of the beach. We really enjoyed walking our small dogs as we made our way down the strand. We visited on the day after a full-moon and hundreds of baby lobster were present. I did not notice the presence of a life-guard or ranger, however. read more

The best part of the wharf is to go people watch all the tourists, as I was once one of these "awesome" people wearing my cool monterey, ca jacket that I bought for 15.99. I find that it is best to come here walk around and maybe stop in the jewelry store on the end toward the left of the wharf. They have great silver in there. There use to be a great fish and chips place when I first moved here but they closed. bummer. read more

The Monterey city wharf is better than the fisherman's wharf. There are real fisherman delivering the catch at the end of the wharf! Plenty of locals try their own luck off at this wharf with their fishing poles. The seals also seem to know when the catch of the day arrives as they bark pretty loud. The only drawback is you have to pay to park. All of the spaces are metered, so bring your quarters. Otherwise I beat that by walking down here. There no charge to walk to the city wharf. :D The occasional naval vessel will visit here on secret business with NPS. The minesweeper U.S.S. Chief stopped in last year. Anyway it's a good place to see the sea faring action. read more

Nice peaceful wharf with beautiful views

a fun pit stop on our road trip down the 1. We got stopped at the first restaurant by someone handing out a sample of clam chowder. We went into that restaurant, but when we came out ALL the restaurants were giving out free samples. I would suggest eating all the samples before deciding. Only a few gift shops and we found one with 2 shirts for $20. We also came across a young pelican that seemed to need help to get back down to the water, now home and reading about it pelican rescue groups recommend leaving all pelicans alone. Other than that this was a nice touristy spot to stop and have a nice ocean view while eating, we saw otters and sea lions from our table. read more

I'm totally a fan! We almost blitzed through Monterey, but I thought it looked kind of cute, so made my mom pull over. What a good choice! Parking was very cheap, and the wharf had a lot of bars that looked fun, with good drink specials. Lots of seafood, too-- though I cannot vouch, as we didn't eat there. Yeah, some of it is totally touristy, but it's really charming, actually. It's kind of off the beaten path as far as typical attractions in California. There were a TON of sea lions-- so if you want to avoid the crowds in San Francisco, come here! Very cute. I wish we had stayed here longer. PLUS the wharf has a flag up from each of the branches of the military. Yeahhhh! read more

Not the tourist mosh elsewhere so easily found along the water so in that regard a better option for those in the area than the wharf which is nothing short of MAHEM. Wonderful views, nice marinas, walk and bikeways as well as cafe culture all in quick distance. read more
