This place has incredible authentic Mexican food. The breakfast tacos are to die for. I like to get the chorizo egg bean cheese and jalapeno taco. I like this place. The food is consistently good. I order the huevos rancheros at least once a month. The beans and potatoes are the best part. The waitstaff is not overly friendly, but considering the hours they are open, they're about to close when I typically eat there. Still, the service fast and efficient. We decided to give this place a try. We went during lunch time and the parking lot was packed!! I didn't think we'd get in but to my surprise, we waited 5 minutes and were seated. We were seated in the little corner under the window unit air conditioner. I ordered the carne asada lunch plate (received beans, rice, salad and the beef smothered in gravy. My husband ordered some tacos and a torta for both of us to try. My food was ok. It's nothing more spectacular than what I've had at any other restaurant. The torta was different looking from what I've ever had before. The bread they use is not a bun, it looked like a pancake. It didn't taste bad but it didn't taste like the tortas I'm used to. I won't be going back. I just didn't think this food tasted any better than Guadalajara plus Guadalajara has way more space and seating inside where you can dine comfortably. read more

Monterrey Cafe - Mexican Near Me - New Braunfels, Texas

First off, everyone and every place has an off day. How can you write an objective review on the only bad experience you had at a place? Here's a real review: Monterrey Cafe...sooooo delightful. I almost hesitated reviewing this as it's my little secret spot. What isn't a secret is my presence almost every Saturday. I consider myself an expert in Mexican food, and have at least 40 extra lbs to prove it. Monterrey is one of the few places in the area including San Antonio that makes home made corn tortillas in addition to home made flour. If you have not had a home made corn tortilla before, you have not lived a full life. Not only are they much healthier than flour, but have so much more flavor and texture. Monterrey nails it, EVERY TIME. Now, New Braunfels isn't exactly lacking in taco joints, but this one stands out and is by far my favorite in town. I have a few criteria for Mexican joints that I feel will benefit everyone for selection in other areas (particularly for Gringo's): 1) The outside must have a poster advertising a Tejano band at a venue you have never heard of or been to 2) If you are not of Hispanic decent, you better be in the minority in the establishment (preferably the only non-Hispanic) 3) You feel a little uncertain about using the bathroom 4) There is Tejano music blaring loudly regardless of the time of day 5) You are greeted by your waitress in Spanish, because she doesn't speak English If you follow these guidelines, you too may find your own Monterrey Cafe. If you have the pleasure of trying Monterrey yourself order the taco of your choice or some of my recommendations: Bean, Bacon, and Cheese on Corn - I'm not sure how much bacon grease is already in the beans at Monterrey, but it is of divine origin. Migas Plate, Machacado Plate, and Barbacoa on Corn. I went through a period of getting the Migas Plate every visit and if I was exceptionally hungry or hungover - added a Barbacoa on Corn. Was in New Braunfels nursing my Wurstfest hangover when the need for food hit me. Mexican food to be specific. So I pull up the Yelp app, do a quick search, and lo and behold, I find this hole-in-the-wall meskin joint. The best kind. So off I goes... I get here and...hmm, the exterior has definitely seen better days. I'm a little hesitant at this point. It's run-down; and not in a cool, quirky way either. Inside is not much better, just two rooms put together in a ramshackle kinda way. Okay, let's get to the food, Maybe the food will be the saving grace. I order the chorizo plate and the girlfriend decides to get the carne guisada. Let it be known that I always judge a Mexican food place by the carne guisada so I was happy that she ordered some. The food comes and...meh, my chorizo plate was a little underwhelming. Nothing really stood out. I guess the best way to describe it would be unmemorable. That leaves the carne guisada that I shared with the girlfriend. After just one bite all I can say is there was definitely a funny taste to it. I'm not sure what it was; but something was off. So much so that she refused to finish it leaving me to make the excuse that I was too full from my plate to finish it off. I think somebody forgot to check an expiration date somewhere. Outstanding service and food. Enchiladas Poblanos plate fantastic! Home made corn tortillas on the side were to die for. Those alone are worth the trip! Be advised that the outside of the restaurant looks like a dive, and the two room interior is not much better. That being said, the inside is clean, the service warm and friendly, the wonderful food comes out quickly and piping hot and the prices are very reasonable. Think your favorite restaurant back home is the best around? You won't really know until you try Monterrey Cafe in New Braunfels Texas. The bicycle club I belong to decided to drive over today from San Antonio for a club bicycle ride from New Braunfels to Gruene and some points of camera worthy interest within each of the two towns. I don't suppose any of our club members are likely to be touched on the shoulder and asked to join the USA national cycling team. As cyclists, no. Not gonna happen. Still, we like having a good meal at an affordable price when we get together and ride. On the internet, I sought an area restaurant in advance with good reviews on Yelp and chose Monterrey Cafe for our breakfast destination this Saturday morning. A dozen of us hungry and thirsty cyclists descended upon this mom and pop establishment sometime a bit after 10am. By this time, the parking lot was largely full of vehicles as we searched for open parking spaces. Lots of cars in a place is a good sign the locals have found a gem of a place. We were seated quickly and our meal orders were filled for the entire group in surprisingly fast fashion. I think maybe the chef there might be magic. Really fast. The food? In between bites of food, I heard "good food", "you picked a great spot", "how did you find this place", "we need to come back here" from different club members. For me? I loved the tacos on corn tortillas. Superb tasting tortillas and I was picking up whatever dropped from my tacos with two fingers afterwards from my plate to leave no trace of my order for detectives. The price is more than worth what you get. The building? It's a mom and pop place, not a fancy structure. Give me good food in a proud but humble building over mediocre food in an art gallery building structure any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Who eats here? Locals, out of towners, parents with young children, retirees and an easy paced bicycle club of people who like feeling a breeze on their skin and the sun kissing their faces as they welcome a new weekend morning pedaling their way to better health. I vacillated between 3 and 4 stars for Monterrey Cafe` - but closer to 4 stars, for me. Like previous reviewer Scott, I consider the Monterrey kind of a good secret (I eat here every time I'm between San Antonio and Austin on I-35 - 6 or so times a year); though I dispute the claim that they're "one of the few" places that makes scratch tortillas. In New Braunfels, perhaps - but honestly, every single Mom'n'Pop taqueria I've visited in San Antonio makes their own flour AND corn tortillas. The one thing I find kind of weird is the trip back to the ladies' room, which - sandwiched in an odd, dark corridor between the kitchen area and a storage area - looks like an afterthought ("Oh, wow, what if we have female customers and they need to tinkle? Maybe we better convert that broom closet into a bathroom!"): if you blink, you'll miss it and wind up staring at mops and such, as I have a couple of times. Nevertheless: the food is very good (usually); service is excellent; and I love the one-of-a-kind Mexican embroidered cloths on each table! read more

Excellent! Real deal Mexican food, worth the trip for the fat, warm, homemade corn tortillas alone. My puffy taco was different from the usual, with the filling served on top of a soft and chewy corn tortilla fried golden brown. My son had standard beef fajitas with tender meat and good grilled veggies. The ambiance is unassuming but clean, and the selection is huge, including Salvadoran selections. Wow. So terribly disappointed. I used to come here as a kid and loved it! The tacos were so good and homemade tortillas? Homemade everything! Today I stopped in with my fiancé after some morning yard work and the cashier looked at us with complete disgust. Wow, I would never peg this place for THAT kind of place. She says we can sit anywhere so we chose one in the back. It was not bussed properly and I left it thinking someone would come right after and gives us menus. We sat like that 10 MINUTES. This place is nothing special and only to go orders you can do are tacos. Ordered 5 tacos but every one was wrong. Service was lack luster. The lady taking orders at the front walked by us and emptied out the over flow bucket in fridge out front. I do see a lot of people here every morning so maybe they ordered something we don't know about. Looked at other diners eating and everyone seemed pretty content. For a place that looked to be a little dirty prices weren't cut rate cheap. Parking was not easy and very very crowded. With so many other places in new braunfels to eat we probably won't be returning. read more

This was a great find. I really wanted BBQ but the parking lot was jam packed and I was heading to familiar grounds when I turned around to eat here. This place reminds me of a typical south Texas small town Mexican restaurant, like you find in Raymondville or Miranda City. Almost all tables were taken during lunch and I thought for sure the service would be slow, less than five minutes from order to food on the table. The two beef enchiladas, rice and beans were very good and tortillas homemade. It's off the beaten pass but worth turning around for. I will definitely be coming back, they have a huge menu to choose from and I only scratched the surface. Oh, since this is the Christmas season, I thought it was nice of the staff to allow a religious couple to ask the patrons if they could speak to them about their beliefs. read more

The chips were not fresh they were sever days old. The Chile relleno that was awesome last time had no taste and was swimming in grease.
