I stopped in for their lunch special and ordered the fajitas--and despite being a lunch portion, the serving size was huge! The food was plentiful, flavorful, and well-seasoned, making for a satisfying meal. Beyond the great food, the customer service was excellent, and the pricing was very affordable. Monterrey Mexican Restaurant is a chain of casual restaurants primarily located in the southeast, with several metro Atlanta locations. Blending Mexican, regional American, and other Latino cultures as early as the 70s, many of the metro restaurants are some of the first Mexican restaurants to open in their respective ATL bubbles. All restaurants are known for their fajitas, margaritas, and use of fresh ingredients. Over the decades, I have regularly frequented the Doraville location (on Buford Highway right inside of the perimeter). It is one of my go-to spots for celebrating, reconnecting, venting, and exhaling. I've laughed, argued, and cried sitting in one of the back right booths. Service is on par for a casual restaurant. If you drink, plan on spending a couple of hours. Their margaritas, sangrias, and sangritas are not for the once-in-a-blue-moon drinker. Over the years, I've developed a sensitivity to triple sec that keeps me from drinking non-craft margaritas. Fortunately, there are other tasty beverages on the menu. Monterrey has lunch specials that carry into the weekend. My go-to order is the fajitas. I also enjoy their enchiladas, chicken tacos, and chimichangas. I have been going to this restaurant since the early 2000's. It remains true to its recipes and it always feels like "home" when I go there not matter how long it's been since the last time. I was pleasantly surprised this past time though, they changed their menus to a much modern look and added a few more items to their menu as well. I ordered tacos and was pleasantly delighted with the new presentation on how they're served to your table, very sleek and overall the food was amazing. Our waitress asked if we wanted small or medium. We both ordered medium. When we got our bill, we were charged $12.99 for a 27 oz jumbo margaritas. The crazy thing is, the glass looked no where near 27 oz, so we measured it with a empty 16 oz water bottle, and guess what, it filled the glass. Monterrey is near I-285 on Buford Hwy. It is a relatively small establishment but it has outdoor seating which makes it larger. We chose to sit outdoors this visit. Our group ordered a vegetarian combo and a shrimp diabla along with drinks. The drinks are strong and everyone else sitting outside was having a fun time. The atmosphere is great and fun. The food is typical Mexican restaurant fare. Nothing really out of the ordinary with the combo. The shrimp sauce was dark and very thick compared to a bright red sauce you find other places. The kitchen has their own take on the dish. Overall it was a fun time. If you want to socialize and enjoy drinks outside it's a good place. So I UberEats an order tonight, the entire order was a mess. I called and the person that answered said to me he was the manager and that I needed THEIR address in order to check my order. I was in my car and couldn't find their address but I asked him to check my oder with my name, my phone number or my address he said he had over 50 orders and he couldn't check my order to give me a refund, he hung off on me, I called again and he hung off again. so I had to drive all the way to the restaurant where my husband got the refund of $15 for a horrible cooked quesadilla and an even worst burrito. My name was the first one on their computer that "the manager" was unable to get without me telling them their own address on my two phone calls. Great place! Upon arrival the quaint authentic look let me know that this was going to be good. It smelled great walking to our self seat booth. The server was warm and polite. The starter was the fresh guacamole that looked so good on the front of the menu. What a great selection! This guac was one of the best that I have had in a while. Then came the fajitas. The fragrant parade of smoke that so perfectly sizzled over my fajitas was the best part until I tasted them. It felt like home! Seasoned to perfection and cooked perfectly :D the shrimp was the favorite protein. I can see myself ordering shrimp fajitas next time I visit because I will definitely be back! This place may look like a hole in the wall but it's been around for over 25 years now so they are doing something right. Monterrey Mexican restaurant has been serving really good Tex-Mex cuisine in this nondescript building for all of that time. This can be considered a neighborhood place but it also attracts a lot of workers passing through the area. I recently returned for lunch after not being out much due to the pandemic and the food was just as good as I remembered it to be. It's Tex-Mex comfort food to be sure. The interior is nothing special and somewhat dated and old-school "diner like" but they serve you fast and usually with a smile. There are a few televisions usually tuned to sports or Mexican soap operas. The staff all (generally) speak English (unlike the client base) and bring water and chips + salsa as soon as you grab a table. The carne asada is a great bet to try, as are most of the steak entrees. Their chips are kind of mediocre (unless they are sitting under a pile of nacho fixings.) Monterrey recently repaved the parking lot and added a much needed handicap ramp so that's appreciated and it looks like they will be staying a while longer. Good to have around. read more

I only come here on Thursdays for a weekly "tacky Mexican" outing with friends and for tunes from the infamous Kenny Powers. He is fantastic and will play/sing you anything your heart desires, from Miley Cyrus to Michael Jackson to Eagles. He also has quite a following! Margaritas here are ok.. Not my favorite, too much sour mix and they don't do skinnies :(. They also sell gigantic mugs of beer. That mug is the size of a large pitcher! Food here is mediocre imo. I very rarely eat here but if I absolutely had to, I'd order Three amigos or Molcajete, which are probably the best items they serve. They also have a patio but it's not great.. Small, facing the parking lot and the BuHi. I would not want to sit here even in summer. There is a loyalty card that they punch for you any time you come here and I think 10 punches will give you half off lunch. Not much of a discount. Overall: service depends on the waiter. Fantastic at times, horrible at others. Best day here is Thursday for the live music. Worth a visit but I would not go back if this wasn't my friends' favorite Mexican place. read more

This is a popular place in an old standalone building with an unassuming storefront. Located on Buford Highway just inside the perimeter (I-285), this restaurant features authentic Mexican food, live music (on occasion), TVs, a festive atmosphere, and an outdoor patio. It's been around since the 70s. They've got all the standard Mexican (and Tex-Mex) fare -- chips and dip, tacos, burritos, fajitas, quesadillas, tamales, taquitos, tostadas, chalupas, chiles rellenos, tostaguacs, tortas, soups, etc. They also have meat, seafood, and various entrees plus those popular combo plates. At lunch, combos are $4.80 to $8.00 each. At dinner, they're mostly $7.00 to $7.50 each. You can expect to spend less than $10.00 each for most items. Affordable pricing. Weekend specials include birria (goat meat or mutton) tacos and stew, lengua (tongue), menudo (spicy soup made with tripe), and shrimp soup. Birria and menudo are available Sunday only. I tried a few items and thought the food was OK to good. Here's what I had: * Cheese dip ($3.50) * Guacamole dip ($3.25) * Chicken fajitas ($10.75) - chicken with peppers, green onions, white onions, guacamole, rice, beans, cheese, sour cream, tomatoes, and tortillas * Molcajete ($14.99) - chicken, steak, sausage, shrimp, nopal, banana pepper, onions, cheese, salad, and tortillas * Horchata ($1.75, medium) - sweet Mexican rice drink The complimentary chips and salsa were good. The chips were middle of the road in terms of thickness and crispiness. The salsa was on the runnier side and mild in terms of spiciness. The cheese dip was A-OK. Creamy and velvety. The guac was terrific! Very fresh and chunky with large chunks of avocado along with chopped cilantro, tomato, and onion. I highly recommend the guac. The chicken fajitas were tasty, served sizzling on an iron skillet. Portion size was generous and the strips of chicken, along with the slices of green and red bell pepper, were nicely blackened. The onions were appetizingly caramelized. Meat quality was OK. The chicken was a bit dry, but lean. I really liked the side plate of Mexican rice, beans and cheese, and salad with tomato and sour cream. Delicious, especially the rice and beans. The molcajete is one of the more interesting items on the menu. "Molcajete" is the word for the Mexican version of the mortar and pestle. I think this dish is mostly about presentation. My molcajete consisted of a black stone mortar filled with various meats, a block of white cheese, and grilled onion, peppers, and nopal (green Mexican cactus). The cheese and veggies were very good, but the meat was sub-par. The chicken and steak were dried out (blackened and overcooked) and the sausage was overly seasoned (too salty and oily). Of course, it helped to eat the sausage with the warm foil-wrapped tortillas and rice. While the molcajete was impressive-looking, the food was just OK. I can see how this dish would be awesome though. If only the meats were better. The horchata was on par with other horchatas around town, which means yummy. If you'd like something sweet to drink with your meal, order one of these. Service was great. Orders were taken promptly and plates came out from the kitchen fast. Pay at the register. There's plenty of parking around the restaurant. TL;DR - Monterrey suffices for quick, cheap, authentic, hole-in-the-wall Mexican. The parking lot is always packed so I had high expectations - the food turned out to be disappointing. It was also uncomfortably warm inside like the a/c wasn't working. I love salsa and it's hard to get it wrong. However, I did not like this salsa at all. I think it may have been different today because I saw some Yelp photos of what seemed to be the type I was looking for. The texture and consistency of the salsa here was more like the consistency of Taco Bell sauce or hot sauce. It was also pretty flavorless. It was less spice and more vinegary maybe? I got the combo #4, which was a taco, enchilada, and beef and cheese tostada. The tostada was exactly that. Beef and cheese (dip), nothing else. No lettuce or tomato. Pretty heavy on the cheese; it made the corn tortilla super soggy. I ended up eating my chips with the tostada meat like nachos, since I didn't eat them with the salsa. I did like the taco! I was a little disappointed in the enchilada..the meat wasn't really seasoned. Price - Good prices. Pretty cheap. Service - They're nice and the food comes out pretty fast. The tables are very narrow and we had 7 people and barely had enough room to put a napkin. It took the waiter 10 minutes to give us a menu and didn't even bring enough for everyone. When I lifted up fajitas with my fork the meat was sitting in a plate of straight grease. I had to keep pulling fat out of my mouth. The guacamole was like water. Yuck. The Buford Highway Monterrey Restaurant exceeds my expectations every time, and I've been going there for many years. I'm sorry for the disappointing experiences others have reported because this really is a great little restaurant that always delivers. My wife and I are an interracial (Black-White) couple together for 31 years now so we know what both subtle and not-so-subtle restaurant techniques are used to discriminate-- * Seat you away from the windows so the restaurant isn't seen by passersby as a "Black Restaurant" * Make like you're getting VIP treatment when they immediately offer to put you and your wife in a very private curtained-off enclave (nope, they just REALLY don't what ANYONE to see ANY Black people in their restaurant) * When you ask for a window table, they seat you near a window in the section around the back of the restaurant that faces the rear parking lot (same idea), which is where you find all the other people of color, the misbehaving children, etc. This is the "Dog Pound," and you have just been "Dog Pounded." * Failing all else, they try to seat you behind a load-bearing column near the restrooms. * Adding on a "mandatory" tip to your bill... but not for the table with the White couple sitting right next to you, ordering the same food from the same waitress. -- but NONE of this has EVER happened here, I'm happy to say. The food is way better than the low prices would otherwise indicate, and the portions are large. The kitchen staff is always hustling and has food service down to a precision science. I'm pretty sure the waitstaff would rather be relaxing on a beach having exotic tropical drinks with little umbrellas offered to them -- who wouldn't right now? -- but they are diligent and fast and courteous. The bottom line is that I have had ZERO complaints, ever, and have NEVER had anything other than a tasty and satisfying meal at Monterrey's on Buford Highway. In my quest to tackle BuHi dining options, I stopped by Monterrey's to check them off the list. In case you can't tell from the outside, it's a bit of a dive. But let's be honest, we're here for cheap food & margaritas, so ignore the tchotchkes and red brick wallpaper! When I entered, I was told to sit anywhere I'd like. Once seated, I promptly received a menu, water, and chips & salsa. The restaurant was about 1/4 full, with a hodgepodge of patrons, from professionals to couples, to young families & a few interesting BuHi characters. Most guests sat inside & a few opted to sit out on the patio. The service seemed fast, regardless of where you sat. I ordered 2 soft tacos (1 chicken & 1 beef) & a side of refried beans. I don't usually order tacos, so I wasn't entirely sure if like. Sounds silly I know but I thought I knew burritos & didn't realize they include beans & rice - I didn't like it... Hopefully I'd fare better with the tacos. Before I could regret my order & change it, two tacos arrived at my table, each wrapped tightly in aluminum foil to keep them warm. I liked the unwrapping process, like opening a surprise gift! What I saw looked promising - the tacos were filled to the brim with a generous amount of meat, as well as cheese & lettuce. To jazz it up, I added salsa, along with hot sauce. To my delight, they were delicious! Messy, but damn tasty! I found if I kept it wrapped in the foil & peeled back just enough at a time to take a bite, I could devour them without needing to be hosed off afterwards! The meat had a great charred flavor & adding the salsa & hot sauce = jackpot!! Even the beans were really good - either as a side or a dip. I'd go back & forth between my fork & tortilla chips, using the beans as a dip. The tacos must've been good - I ate every last bite in record time! Damn, was I that hungry when I came in?!, lol! Not bad. I came to Monterrey Mexican Restaurant (not to be confused with the chain with the same name), with a large group of yelpers, on a weekday evening. Immediately upon entering, we were treated to live music...well, a guy and his guitar, who played most of the night. We were seated quickly and our drink orders were also taken pretty quickly. If you're not into the music, there's also outdoor seating. Complimentary baskets of chips and house salsa hit the tables in just a couple of minutes after sitting, so their customer service is not bad at all. The salsa was a little watered down, but decent, especially with warm (and free) chips. For the main order, I got a bowl of their chicken soup ($6.75), which is served with a light broth mixed with pico de gallo, rice, chunks of chicken and avocado (which I got on the side). Flour or corn tortillas, and sliced lime also come with the soup. There also is a vegetarian and lunch menu selection if their regular menu doesn't do the trick for you. The soup had a decent amount of flavor, that's brought out with the lime. The chicken chunks, which are breast, were nice and juicy, and although I don't like avocado, they're very generous, giving you a bowl with several pieces of fresh avocado. For a private lot along Buford hwy, I thought that space would be at a premium, but they actually have a fairly spacious lot, with parking on either side and behind the restaurant. Exiting out of the lot going towards 285 can be a challenge, but it's manageable. Is Monterrey's the best mexican i've had? No...but is it a good place to grab some cheap food with flavor?
