Been eating here for years. They have the best Carne Guisada I have ever had. Tender beef with thick velvety smooth gravy. Their red beans and Spanish rice are good enough to make a meal out of especially with their large home made flour tortillas. Salad is made fresh daily and both the red and green are delicious! Never had a bad plate of food here. The only draw back is they close daily at 1 or 2pm. Awesome food & great people. read more

Monte's is **allegedly** known to discriminate against white customers by charging them more for the food without the customer's knowledge of them doing so (someone is said to have paid $13 for 2 burritos, yikes), there's lots of talk about a lawsuit most likely going to be brought upon them for it as it's illegal to discriminate and overtly charge more -- but for the sake of this little thing going on, let me tell you what is **CERTAIN** about this place: The food here isn't exactly the best as it is usually a bit dry, the meat isn't purely meat (at times) and is just cuttings of fat from the meat itself but people usually eat it if it's called Mexican food (Nare's is much better and is advertised as is). There's also an excessive amount of tortilla which rivals the content of the burrito meaning you practically paid like $6 for a tortilla (I don't remember the prices of a burrito here but it's not necessary from what I remember) (I'm not some sort of guy advertising for these people BUT here's a great alternative) Ever since Nare's opened as a food truck Monte's customers and service have dwindled like crazy then it practically died when Nare's opened a legitimate building literally like next door to this place. The customer service is much different, food quality is way better, they care about what they make, the drinks you get are lovely such as horchata, Jamaica, etc. This is just all around everything Monte's isn't. I'd be lying if I didn't say I felt relatively sad about Monte's slow descent into shutting down one day but they have made little to no effort to save their business, the same people that made it what it is still work there, the prices are still the way they are, the food quality hasn't changed, apparently the kitchen looks terrible from first-hand accounts online, and more). If any apology were ever issued about the said-discrimination, I don't believe it; I'm not white but if you own a business then treat it like a business. Money is money & color shouldn't matter one bit; go to Fort Worth or elsewhere where it's less of them if you feel that way because it's redundant to be here and move like that. But I guess it's just the individual empathy a human feels. If anyone from Monte's sees this: take this not as a review but as a checklist of what you need to improve on if you actually care about your business, at least you're not El Gallo de Oro bad, those guys charge like crazy and people reportedly find pieces of foreign objects such as wood and metal in their children's food, I don't know why or how they exist read more

The burrito was amazing! It was hot and fresh. However, they overcharged my credit card. I guess they think it's perfectly fine to add an additional tip, since most people won't notice. Finally stopped in for a weekend breakfast and was pleasantly surprised this small building on 377 has a sit down with a waitress style restaurant inside. Staff quickly loaded us up with chips and salsa. We added the green salsa that I saw on Yelp was a "do not miss" item and y'all were right! Ordered 3 tacos and some charro beans. I tried, I tried and I can't give a good review. I've been here a half a dozen times and the burritos are all the same...luke warm, slightly cooked, and half melted cheese. I've been through the drive-through each time. The people at the drive-through are super nice and welcoming. However, when I leave with their burritos, they're always the same: luke warm (like really luke warm), slightly cooked, and barely melted cheese (like you can see the cheese unmelted). Also, the salsa *3 times* had a hair in it, and the green had a stench I couldn't use *twice*. I hate giving this review, but I really wish they'd fix this. Great location, great concept, and EASY food to make! Their green salsa is decent, but last time I had it, I had a hair in it. I know we all make mistakes, as do restaurants, but c'mon, my experience has been pretty bad. I also asked for either a cold soda, or water...all have been luke warm. I'm sad. I wanted to visit this place weekly, or even more, to my journey to Lowe's but I just can't take the luke warm, almost cold, breakfast burritos anymore. I'd avoided all indoor dining for a year, then a friend asked if we could enter this small restaurant. I balked until spotting how they'd thinned out tables and spread them around. All of the staff were engaging in mask courtesy, if felt comfortable. My favorites: Tacos al Carbon on the lunch menu, with corn doubled tortillas and raw purple onion. A close second is their comfort food, the sour cream enchiladas. No place makes better salsa, although Uncle Julios' roached pepper offering comes close: this is a light red with citrus taste. So this place is actually "Montes #4" and I was told there are 7 scattered around Texas. Having the words "Breakfast Burritos" in the name might sway most from hitting Montes for lunch, but that's what I did. Monte's had a good, mixed, crowd dining, so I took that as a good sign. I'm not sure if you can get a breakfast burrito for lunch, but oddly I did not see any burritos on the lunch menu. What I did see was tacos al carbon (3), and that's the route I took. Dad went for the gorditas (3), which was the daily special (this seems to be an item from the regular lunch specials for a buck less). Most lunch specials are around $6 or $7, are served with beans and rice, and come with iced tea. Lunch started off with chips and two types of salsa, the typical red and a creamy jalapeño. The red was good, but the green was great. I ended up putting the green on everything. When my tacos (3) came I did ask for some hot sauce, and was given a third type of salsa, perhaps tomatillo based, but it wasn't that hot nor as good as the green. So both the gorditas and the tacos were good (we traded one for one). Good enough that I will certainly consider Monte's #4 a lunch destination... I'll just be sure to get here before 2PM (and not try on Sunday). Oh, and I still do want to make it back for a breakfast burrito. read more

I have been eating here for the last several years and always get their barbacoa burrito with cilantro and onions plus their amazing verde sauce. However, on my most recent visit I was so disappointed I noticed my burrito was much smaller for the same price. Still the same great taste but less food. The heat level of the verde sauce changes with every visit but I like it when it is really spicy. Their spicy green sauce is epic! I've been scouring the Internet trying to find their recipe so I can eat it on everything or just with a spoon and a bottle of water (to combat the heat of course). I also have only good to say about their homemade tortillas (I had flour, not sure if they have corn or not). They'd make even a mediocre burrito taste good...which they did, hence my 4 stars. The red sauce was just ok to me..I may have enjoyed it more if I didn't like the green so much. I will say my bean & cheese with sour cream was great, not a thing to complain about. However, I didn't quite care as much for my chorizo & potato burrito, though certainly edible. The chorizo was just too dry & almost gristly and my potatoes were cut in perfect rectangles (making me think they were frozen) and were also not fully cooked. Okay, the hole in the wall shack you hear about with amazing food. That is this place. Brush up on your Spanish if your a picky eater and you want to know exactly what you are eating, because the food is excellent but remember pollo is chicken, etc and so on. If your attitude is SPEAK ENGLISH, you can order by picture. Personally don't think you deserve good authentic Mexican anything, so I'm hoping tongue is on the menu (though I've never seen it so don't freak out). Regular red sauce is pretty average spicy. The green is uber spicy and delicious. I love it. So try it if your looking for an extra kick... both are free with your purchase. The iced tea is great for the locals. We ate here yesterday while visiting Granbury, I cannot even express how great the food was... I ordered the Carne Guisada burrito and there was so much yummy meat, almost couldn't finish it. If you are a meat lover, we recommend any of the meat burritos. You can tell that they work on making their meat flavorful and tender. Everytime i come to this place they mess up my order or sometging disgusting is up.. If you're all for yummy breakfast burritos, raise your hand!! {lifts arm, points fingers to sky and squeals with excitement} I know I am! And Montes needs to branch out to Dallas, seriously. I'd be their #1 customer. This morning we stopped for breakfast on our way home and like always, Monte delivered with fresh, warm, homemade tortillas and fresh ingredients. My favorite is the bacon, egg and cheese; but they also offer chorizo, potato and a slew of other varieties. Each order is made on request, so you know those foil tubes of goodness aren't sitting under a warmer lamp for hours. And it also comes with little cups of their awesome homemade salsa...so spicy, it's a perfect complement to the burritos. They also offer a REALLY hot salsa variety (I think it's green, if I remember correctly), but you have to ask for it. The only downside: parking and the drive-thru line always sucks. They try to move quickly, but if you catch them on a busy morning it can take up to 20 minutes or so to get through the line. And it REALLY sucks if you're hungover and hungry for some grub.
