I've lived near Montgomery movies for 30 yrs. It's nearby , usually not crowded & shows independent movies . Lately they show more of the blockbusters. BUT the SOUND quality is terrible. Many times voices are low & garbled. I've not been able to follow many of the movie plots because of this. Today I went to the HILLSBORO movie theatre (which has same owners as Montgomery) & their DOLBY 7.1 made a huge difference. Hillsboro seats more comfortable. Loads of parking. I won't be returning to Montgomery even tho it's 5 minutes away. read more

I went to see Devil Wears Prada 2 at Montgomery Cinema. I don't know if it was the sound on the film itself or the terrible sound system in the theater, but myself and others could not distinguish the words the actors were speaking, so much so that I could not follow the plot of the movie. The voices were loud enough but in a very muffled tone. I literally could only make out about 1 out of 4 words by the female actresses, male actors were only slightly better. read more

Montgomery is a small independent theater that I like to support as their roster of independent films is a welcome respite from the constant flow of treacle at the multiplex. So, when Montgomery runs a current "blockbuster" to pay some bills, who can argue... until The Fall Guy. This stunted, homage to stunt men makes Mike Meyers legendary atom bomb from 2008, The Love Guru, look like Citizen Kane. This is not a case of it being so bad, it's good (like Airplane or Tropic Thunder) the movie should have been subtitled at a first grade level just to elevate the dialogue and to give the saccharin, zero chemistry costars (Gosling and Blunt) something less tedious to chew on. I like them both but have to wonder if the entire debacle was just improvised on the spot. I would have walked out but when you run into something so supernaturally bad, there's a perverse commitment to see how it turns out. No worries Montgomery, I'll take one for the team and will always remember the running commentary from the octogenarians sitting behind us who were dropping f-bombs wondering what theater they stumbled into. FYI, Judi Dench is in theater 3. A true five star mess. read more

They do offer apple pay which is good, however the seats are terrible. Very uncomfortable. No recliners?! Parking is usually ample, but spaces seem a bit tight. They do not have electronic ticketing- even if you buy your ticket ahead of time, they still have to punch in the numbers to generate you a paper ticket. While I love the movies they screen here, the state of the facility is really getting to be intolerable. I recently saw the Irishman, a 3.5 hr Scorcese masterpiece. For the entire length of the movie, I had to look at a very obvious black line in the center of the screen. I think the screen was ripped. Seriously?? Fix the screen guys! I'm not even going to mention the old, uncomfortable seats and lackluster sound system which I tolerate because they have great movies. But the screen being screwed up is inexcusable. Infrastructure issues aside, how about sprucing up the hygiene? The bathrooms were utterly disgusting and had no soap or paper towels and the theater itself had litter all over the floor. Nice, small movie theatre. They play general movies, however, it's the only theatre in the area that plays independent films. They've renovated it so that the seats are comfy (not reclining), it's clean and welcoming! Staff is friendly and helpful. read more

This theatre is always less expensive than the others near by. They show current movies, but there are only five screens. Each screen has only about 100 seats. When we went there, one of them was having technical difficulties so they had to shuffle things around. The sound and picture quality are good and the popcorn is always fresh. The employees are always friendly and attentive. When I am looking to go to the movies, if this theatre has the picture I want to see, I go there. But because they are small, they often don't have the movie I want to see and I have to go elsewhere. read more

While I am uncertain I would consider this the best movie theater in the state of New Jersey, I love it still. I am aware that this place has been around for many years. It is located at the Montgomery Shopping Center in Skillman, NJ and used to be only 2 screens before being remodeled into six. It had been located in a different part of the shopping center when it had only 2 auditoriums, which as far as I know was in the 80's, early 90's. I hadn't seen a movie there at that point, although I had been inside the lobby. It had moved to a new location at the center and expanded to six screens by the mid-90's. That was when I started seeing films here, unfortunately not often. It was only up until these past few years that I had been going more. All this time, I have always checked in to find out what films they play and they often show films that are personal favorites. I love independent films. It certainly helps to be into it in order to enjoy coming here. The auditoriums aren't huge and don't necessarily need to be. It's quite a simple, somewhat old-fashioned way of going to the movies. Being very familiar with the place, I know that cinema 1 has the largest seating capacity at 188. The best experience I had in that one particular auditorium was seeing Birdman on the Saturday night opening. Surprisingly, the theater was almost empty. It depends on the time you go to see a movie here. It seems their busiest times are on early evening weekends and perhaps Saturday or Sunday afternoons. The busiest I have ever seen this place was when seeing Brooklyn. It was on holiday weekend after New Years and the line was literally out the door. Not a vacant seat in that entire auditorium. Now, if you have heard of those films I just mentioned, or like those kinds of films, well then you might want to check this place out if you're in the area. Believe it or not, this place used to show some blockbuster movies back when they reopened, but for several years now they primarily show foreign language/independent films. Mostly an older clientele. The riff raff are nonexistent. Clean facilities, nice location, good popcorn, reasonably priced; what more is there. It is a nice little theatre. I highly recommend it. There were some...some problems I've had here, but nothing to completely deter me from ever coming back. One problem years ago was when I saw Married Life. Nothing I was anticipating, but I remember a constant hissing coming from the auditorium speakers throughout the entire performance. This was long before they went all digital. The worst as it gets for me was when I saw Room. It was around Oscar time and the theater was fairly busy. There were two middle-aged women in the aisle across from me and (if you know this film, you know it is pretty dramatic), well during the film, one of them had their damn cellphone constantly going off. She even answered at some point. It was distracting. I thought about saying something, but I didn't want to miss anything by walking out to the lobby. It probably wouldn't have mattered anyway. Now this is something I never...ever expected to have happen here. The audience is pretty respectful 99% of the time. It just goes to show: teenagers, older people; doesn't matter where you go. Being disrespectful comes from all walks of life. To avoid things like that, it is best to be selective about what time of the day to go. read more

Part of the curtain is hanging over the screen and when I let them know (before the movie started and after I spent 20 bucks on tickets) they said "yeah...there's not much we can do about that. Sorry." Maybe get it fixed before you charge people to look at a dangling curtain? Also, they don't have stadium seating, so if someone is in front of you, you'll be watching the back of someone's head. read more

It's unfortunate that this is often the only theater in the area to show certain independent movies, because it's a complete dump run by people who don't care in the least about the experience they're offering. Where to begin? The seats are uncomfortable and far too narrow. The screens are all dirty and have dark lines running down them, which distracts from the movie, which is usually not projected properly in the first place - no attempt by the theater to crop or mask the picture, and you're lucky if it's not cut off at the bottom. The projector bulbs are too dim and need replacing, and the sound is abysmal. If that's not enough to ruin the experience, the theater is often filled with patrons who like to act as if they're in their living room, rudely talking at full volume, which the management clearly doesn't care about. And the icing on the cake: the popcorn is awful, stale, and almost certainly not popped in-house. I have no idea how this place has a 4-star average. I wish they'd knock it down and start fresh with an owner who shows some level of concern for the moviegoing experience. Look for the nearby Princeton Garden theater for a place that actually does it right. read more

My favorite movie theater in the area. They show foreign/indie movies, but will have the 'larger' indies like for example, The Debt, or Midnight in Paris. Parking is free in the parking lot and it is so cheap to go there for a matinee- 7.00! SO and I love to catch one when we can. The snack bar is a bit bare-bones- soda, water, candy, popcorn, and usually there are two kids running the place, selling you tickets and manning the concessions. The seats are pretty comfortable and new (no squeaking!) They show about two trailers so you're never waiting too long for the feature presentation. Great selection of movies and great location (right off of 206). You can go to the Thomas Sweet next door and get a coffee- they let us bring ours in since they didn't serve coffee! I've lived around the block from this theatre for over 30 years and I've never been disappointed in its choice of foreign movies. Recently totally upgraded to digital with substantial remodeling they still discount for seniors and military. While they still serve mainly "junk" food without other choices they are no different than any other theatre in that respect. Wish it was different. I still give them five stars. My very favorite theatre. I do have to say that I fell into one of the old seats (it was taped up in black duct tape during a dark part of the movie) and I couldn't getup from the now "floor"seating without help from the audience. I was given a nonchalant "sorry" and that was the end of it. I couldn't walk normally for a week had I not liked the movie theatre so much I could have sued! Never even got a free ticket!. I remember the first day that this Cinema opened. I have been coming here that long. Over 20 years I suspect. I have lived in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, and Ohio (gees Ohio kind of stinks to be honest...can I leave a review for Ohio?) but that is besides the point. This Cinema has the best selection of titles always. It is so very consistent. I like art/indie type films. You won't ever catch me at the latest Batman release and the good news is that you won't find that type of film here. They are light on blockbusters and heavy on more discerning titles. This theater has given me many wonderful memories over time. My mom has recently passed away from breast cancer, and I will always cherish those lazy rainy days when we would venture out to watch a few movies in one day at this location. I'll never forget those times and they hold a very special place in my heart. It was my Mom's favorite theater by a long shot, and thus became mine not because it was her favorite but because the films were great. My Mom and I would smuggle in a few snacks and make a day out of it. My only wish is that they had as good of food options as they do movie selections. If the management is listening you guys are missing out on a ton with the food situation. In fact I would like to make a standing offer to purchase your snack stand, because its an undiscovered gold mine. For those of you living in Montgomery you have a special place here. I was disappointed in this theater after reading the other reviews. First of all, it's expensive. Second, the theater itself was old and gross, with not-even-close-to-stadium seating. Third, the movie I saw there kind of sucked... It's possible I'm being harsh on the theater just because I happened to see a movie I didn't like. I'll probably give it another shot at some point. But, I'd prefer to just go to Princeton Garden Theater. It's cheaper, closer to my house, and nicer. read more

I love Montgomery Cinemas. My friends and family look to them as our local theater whenever we are in the mood to see an excellent film. It's rare that they haven't had something wonderful playing. I love watching foreign film, and the proximity of their cinema to my home can't be beat. Additionally, it's almost never crowded, so I always feel comfortable going in. Outstanding movie selection. This theater is known for showing all of the critic picks, foreign and independent films. it is similar to Princeton Garden theater but it has 6 screens instead of 2. I rarely get concession so cannot speak to anything on offer, but I can say that there are a few good choices for food in the shopping center. $8 for movies before 6PM and $10.50 for after 6PM. Shows do sell out for popular options. Staff is nice and friendly. read more

Love that you can grab coffee/ice cream/whatever from Thomas Sweet next door and bring it in! Love that it doesn't often get crowded or attract rowdy teens considering the type of films they screen! Great Indie Theater. Has that old fashion feel. When a lot of modern theaters are removing the traditional popcorn butter, and that "popcorn" feel. Here you can hear it popping, and it's very authentic, along with some of the movies which aren't digital. To me this makes for a nice warm, analog movie viewing experience. Montgomery Cinemas aren't perfect though. Being an older theater it's hard to upkeep, but they do a fantastic job. Don't expect a perfect seat, our movie was packed and we had to sit up front and my neck was a bit cramped. But I noticed the non digital quality and it was nice for a change, because it had that "authentic movie look". I have been to better "old fashion", "authentic", "indie" theaters. But Montgomery beats them by offering a larger selection of movies! read more

This theater, like many others, is way TOO LOUD. There is no reason to have the soundtrack at 90 decibels. It is probably a violation of various noise abatement laws and in violation of OSHA regulations. It's time to boycott this place until they fix this problem. After trying to watch The Beguiled while people on my right and left side wouldn't stop talking and laughing I had enough. It sucks to give this one star but after coming here for a few years I was officially turned off last night. Any movie I've been to at this theater people feel the need to talk through it which is very distracting. The theater should have a stricter policy for no talking. I was really torn between 3 or 4 stars for this Cinema. I'm a huge movie buff & hate to drive 30minutes out of town to see a 'popular' film. I really do love going to this cinema, but there are drawbacks. It deserves 4 stars for being a smaller, local cinema without the $40 charge by the time you leave for 2 people to enjoy a movie that's going to be out on DVD within 2 months. Don't get me wrong, the prices are still high, but not the limit. Deserves 5 stars for showing GREAT, independent films shown no where else...THIS IS A PLUS!!! This place really lacks on customer service. The ticket 'kids' are never friendly & tend to text while helping you. Btw...I'm a texting freak too, but NOT while working!! The refreshment counter person is always "yeah, what ya want?"...ARGH!!! That drives me nuts! Who owns this place???? Why aren't they visible??? I do agree with Joanne K, the reviews & stars really aren't reflecting what's wrong with this place. I can't tell you how great the selection of films are...A+ for that! read more

This is my movie theater of choice when I am back home. Honestly, I don't know how it can stay in business. It seems like every time I am there, only a few other people are in the theater with me. But this is what I love! It's wonderful to be able to be in a quiet theater, instead of being stuck in a crowd of obnoxious people at one of the larger theaters nearby. Also, it's the only place around to find the new foreign films and indie flicks. And not just two or three at a time like the Princeton Garden Theater. It took me a long time realize this theatre was great. When I was a kid and Hillsboro Theaters finally got awesome--we kind of forgot about this place. They do show the most up to date Indie's around and unlike most independent theaters, they have plenty more screens and more understandable hours. It is a little pricy, but it is small and relaxing. It is a very old and small theatre-but who really cares? You can't be that picky at an independent theatre. You also can't really judge a theatre on the movie you saw. Have been to this theater many times as we live close by. They offer foreign and independent films that are not found at many theaters. They have convenient parking and nice restaurants and coffee shops nearby. But, the staff is usually inattentive. We recently purchased tickets and snacks without anyone even looking up from their phones. The popcorn tastes stale and the bathrooms are outdated, dimly lit and smelly. If the same film is available elsewhere, we try to avoid this theater. read more

If you're looking for that indy film that's ONLY playing at select movie theaters, chances are the Montgomery is going to show it.

I want to give this theater a chance, but I have had bad experiences 3 times in a row. We just saw French Dispatch, I spent $40 (3 people) to see this great movie but here it was on a filthy screen in a theater that was still be under repair with a bad draft. It was so cold my wife got sick and had a sore throat the next day. Last time I came here to see a different Wes Anderson movie - Grand Budapest Hotel - and the bottom 10% of the image was cut off by poor projector positioning for the whole film. I moved back to this area about 2 decades ago, and will try this theater out every few years, but the last 3 attempts, we're batting 3 and 0. I grew up as a child here, and loved this theater then (when it was located where the Chinese restaurant is now). Their movie selection is great but the viewing experience is far worse than if you just rented the same movie at home. I hate posting a 1 star review, but wish the proprietor would fix the screens and physical condition of the theater. Looks like there are new seats, so there's that. I don't know what I'd do without this theater! It's the only theater almost wholly devoted to the screening of foreign and independent films, and sometimes Hollywood with a twist. It's an older theater, regular seating, but it's inexpensive for tickets and snacks. The draw here is the quality and diversity of movies that none of the big theaters have.
