    BBQ brisket platter
    Jazz F.

Just before I hit the highway, I noticed a restaurant named, "Monty's BBQ." My first thought was, "This is a shore town, what would anyone here know about BBQ?" Then, I pulled over because as the self-proclaimed "King of All Texas Aggies" on the Jersey Shore, the responsibility of checking it out and confirming that their BBQ was marginal at best fell upon my shoulders. I meandered in and allowed Monty's the pleasure of having me as a paying customer. I looked at the menu. To tell the truth, I only cared about the meat selection and not the sides. Meat is life! Meat is the only thing that matters! They had pulled pork, St. Louis ribs, BEEF BRISKET (Whoop!), and smoked turkey breast. I was surprised that they didn't have smoked sausage like every Southwest BBQ joint I've been to, but then I remembered, this is Jersey... There's sausage at every single one of the far too many Italian restaurants here. Probably a good business decision for them to stick to the basics. Doing what any sane person would do, I ordered the beef brisket platter. It came with corn bread, coleslaw, pickles, and onions. The young woman behind the counter asked me what type of BBQ sauce I wanted. There was a choice of Texas, North Carolina (mild or hot), South Carolina, Kansas City, or Alabama white. I opted for the Texas BBQ sauce out of general principle. Their side selection was respectable: macaroni salad, mac and cheese, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, pickles and onions, and ratatouille. My order was delivered to my table almost within two or three minutes. The sliced brisket looked good, and it smelled good. But, the proof is in the eating! The brisket was incredible. I'm not saying it was Austin, Texas or Lockhart, Texas quality, but it was better than a number of plates of brisket I've had in Texas and other states in the Southwest and, it was certainly the best brisket I've had on the East Coast! It had been smoked with Red Oak, the "King of Hardwoods". The bark was firm and crispy, the fat content of each slice was perfect. There was the required pink smoke ring under the bark. Obviously, the pit master knew what he was doing. You could tell the brisket had been smoked the correct length of time and at the right temperature to get over the "stall" for the connective tissue in the meat to break down.

Pulled pork almost ALL GONE yum!!

Wow! This was soooo good! I got the brisket sandwich and it was packed with meat, came with plenty of sauce, and onions and pickles to add on it. Staff was very friendly too. Casual but clean. Highly recommend this place if you're looking for great BBQ

Best BBQ around NY, although it's in NJ! Smokey and succulent ribs, moist corny corn bread, I'm in heaven!

Well, I was finally able to check it out recently with a friend, and we both immediately fell in love with the place. The bar was at the end of a long parking lot and offered several different areas. There was a tented space with picnic tables, a sand-covered lagoon with couches and firepits, a pier with loads of dining tables, a small space for their frequent live music, a giant bar, and many other lounge chairs scattered about. The bar offered a variety of beers, wines, cocktails, and even mocktails. My Aperol Spritz was robust and well-balanced. We also ordered food from Cuts & Catch, which was a food truck and grill near the entrance to the bar. Their menu supposedly changes often, but they focus on both surf and turf items. When we arrived around 7:30 pm on a Saturday evening, a majority of the menu was already sold out. In some ways, that helped ease the selection process, but it also meant that a few of the things that had appealed to us (chicken kebabs, for instance) were no longer an option. We each ended up getting an order of the Fried Fish Tacos and shared a Shrimp Cocktail. The tacos were served in portions of three. The small corn tortillas were wrapped around large pieces of crispy, flaky fish tenders and a cabbage slaw. We both thought they looked basic, but they tasted phenomenal! The raw bar dish included five jumbo shrimp with a side of cocktail sauce. The shellfish were plumb and very fresh. We were still a bit hungry after these items, especially since we had spent the day at the beach, so we also shared an order of fries for the ride home; the thin, crisp fries were perfectly salted and simply delicious. The live music and views of the sunsetting over the marina made for a lovely atmosphere, and the excellent food and drinks made the experience that much better. We cannot wait to return!

The Tuesday night wing special was a nice surprise, .75 wings. Rubbed and smoked wings were very good, I liked their Alabama white sauce. Ribs were solid, nice smoke, fat rendered nicely. Spicy BBQ was very good. Cornbread was well above par. Service was very good. Owner offered samples. Cool byob, wood paneling. Parking can be challenging in the summer. I was worried the place would be so busy we would have to wait, but it was surprisingly half empty although people did keep coming in. I'm guessing so close to the Jersey shore on Saturday night in the summer everybody was doing the fine dining thing and we were surrounded by other restaurants that kinda met that criteria. I have to say I love the entire area: little shops and restaurants! Next time I'll have to look for an ice cream place nearby! I definitely like the atmosphere inside, it's kind of whimsical and fun with the little hilarious signs. But the food is clearly the star of the show. There was a small disappointment as they didn't have pulled pork because it wasn't ready, so I couldn't get the special "Mondo Joe" burger so I'll try to get that next time. We decide to get the special Parmesan fries I'm sorry I can't recall what they were named on the menu I think it was Cacio pepe fries. Those we couldn't stop eating till they were gone! I wound up getting the shrimp Po'boy with the grilled shrimp. the only thing I have to say is that it should've been on a roll that wasn't cut all the way through as to hold the shrimp in place, otherwise it was absolutely delicious and fresh tasting. My wife had the Cowboy brisket sandwich with melted cheese and onions with au jus for dipping. We both had their coleslaw which they give a very large portion of as our one included side. She let me try some of her sandwich, absolutely amazing! The brisket melts in your mouth! I also scored the leftover half of her sandwich as the portions are quite generous. I of course finished my sandwich! I can't wait to get back to this place and try more of the delectable items on the menu. The food really is that good.
