Just happened upon this place while driving through Atlantic Highlands. I saw BBQ and I HAD to stop! It's a little bit of Country when you walk in and the bluegrass music playing definitely puts you in the mood. The guy serving looked a little rough but he was very kind. Don't judge a book by its cover. Ordered the Sliced Brisket Sandwich. Two things I wished were different: 1) I wished it was a potato roll & 2) I wished the onions that came with it were pickled. Those are my only two complaints because everything else was FIRE!! The Cole Slaw was nice & crunchy and not too mayonaisey at all. The pickles weren't so sour...I like that. The BBQ sauce, GREAT viscosity and even greater flavor! And the brisket...CHILD!!!...AH-MAZ-INGGGGG!!! Some might argue that there was too much fat cap left on but fat is flavor! It was perfect! I finally had a chance to come back here and the BBQ is as good as I remember. I had the brisket with the vinegar based sauce and both were top notch. I never found any amazing BBQ places until I went to Montys. You have to get the chopped brisket sandwich w Kansas City sweet sauce. So good. We even pick up a bottle of the sauce for home. My husband especially loved the baked beans, and said they were so flavorful with a perfect balance of sweet and spicy. Next time we head to Sandy Hook, we will certainly stop there again. Very high quality BBQ. I would recommend the brisket, ribs, and pulled pork as they're all perfectly prepared. Well-made ribs are very difficult to find and these are both tender and toothsome without just coming apart. The brisket is flavorful and moist. The pulled pork is fatty, smoky, and even has bits of bark. I recommend having it with the carolina vinegar sauce. Place is relatively small, but there's enough room to eat in. Chili and beans are also good, though I'm not a fan of their cornbread; it's pudding-like. The only real slight I have against them is that they do not make their own BBQ sauce; all their sauces are bottled, but they are very good sauces. No pulling Kraft BBQ sauce from the shelf, they seem to have looked for the best ones they could. read more

Just before I hit the highway, I noticed a restaurant named, "Monty's BBQ." My first thought was, "This is a shore town, what would anyone here know about BBQ?" Then, I pulled over because as the self-proclaimed "King of All Texas Aggies" on the Jersey Shore, the responsibility of checking it out and confirming that their BBQ was marginal at best fell upon my shoulders. I meandered in and allowed Monty's the pleasure of having me as a paying customer. I looked at the menu. To tell the truth, I only cared about the meat selection and not the sides. Meat is life! Meat is the only thing that matters! They had pulled pork, St. Louis ribs, BEEF BRISKET (Whoop!), and smoked turkey breast. I was surprised that they didn't have smoked sausage like every Southwest BBQ joint I've been to, but then I remembered, this is Jersey... There's sausage at every single one of the far too many Italian restaurants here. Probably a good business decision for them to stick to the basics. Doing what any sane person would do, I ordered the beef brisket platter. It came with corn bread, coleslaw, pickles, and onions. The young woman behind the counter asked me what type of BBQ sauce I wanted. There was a choice of Texas, North Carolina (mild or hot), South Carolina, Kansas City, or Alabama white. I opted for the Texas BBQ sauce out of general principle. Their side selection was respectable: macaroni salad, mac and cheese, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, pickles and onions, and ratatouille. My order was delivered to my table almost within two or three minutes. The sliced brisket looked good, and it smelled good. But, the proof is in the eating! The brisket was incredible. I'm not saying it was Austin, Texas or Lockhart, Texas quality, but it was better than a number of plates of brisket I've had in Texas and other states in the Southwest and, it was certainly the best brisket I've had on the East Coast! It had been smoked with Red Oak, the "King of Hardwoods". The bark was firm and crispy, the fat content of each slice was perfect. There was the required pink smoke ring under the bark. Obviously, the pit master knew what he was doing. You could tell the brisket had been smoked the correct length of time and at the right temperature to get over the "stall" for the connective tissue in the meat to break down. read more

Very underwhelmed. I read that Monty's is one of the best bbq places in NJ and Yelp showed 4.8 with 33 reviews. Totally disagree with both. The ribs had no smoke ring and pretty much no smoky taste. Seemed like they only had dry rub on the ribs and they were pretty fatty. The good was the coleslaw (amazing) and the mac & cheese was very good. Not sure if I caught them on an off night but I was extremely disappointed because I was looking forward to a great bbq experience. I definitely will give them another try in the hopes that I will have a better experience. read more

Ordered take out on a Sunday afternoon- and it was Superb! The Staff- Really nice people! Food- We had 2 meat combo dinners ( Ribs &Brisket, Ribs & Smoked Turkey) Ribs are true a masterpiece! And the turkey YUMMM! We loved all the sauces but the vinegar base ( North Carolina style?? ) was off the chart!! The sides are also really good - the corn bread is like a 150% off the scale amazing! My personal preference would be to have the onions& celery grated instead of large chunks in the potatoes salad : ) because that's how my Mom makes it LOL . We will be back for sure. I think next time we will eat on site and bring some cold beer and share with the kind folks that work so hard to make this great food! read more

I attended an event last night that had catered boxed meals from Monty's BBQ. So so so yummy good! The extremely generous portion of pulled pork was DELICIOUS! It was seasoned to perfection on its own but they included a container with a tangy dressing to add some more zing if you so desired (it was so nice to have the choice!). There was also a side of coleslaw to kick things up to an entirely new level of yummy goodness! The sandwich bun was the perfect springy texture, not too moist and soft that it sticks to the roof of your mouth like a potato bun. I'm kinda particular about my pulled pork, so when I say these guys nailed their slow roast, I dont say that lightly. To top it off there was a small container of dessert that rounded out the whole experience. Some sort of chocolate and vanilla pudding with bananas. As a NJ transplant from OK, I will preface by saying I am VERY picky about BBQ (and I can be snooty about this cause I know all my native NJ folks would have some serious issues finding a quality veal parm in OK). I can make perfect brisket on my smoker that has been the result of a 40-year learning curve. I have eaten at all the big names in TX BBQ. When I get bad BBQ, I get all bent outta shape cause I just wasted a wallet full of money on something that people should have high quality control for it's price per pound. I just finished eating a pound of Monty's smoked brisket and a side of mac and cheese. I write this review with a tear in my eye as I remember my first bites of brisket and how I fell in love. This BBQ is legit and I can officially say that NJ has a great TX-style BBQ joint. The brisket was moist and had a great flavor. It wasn't over-smoked and had a great bark. It wasn't overly peppery but had a good season to it. The pit-master knew what they were doing and nailed it. I have grown to accept that BBQ is expensive as it is a laborious undertaking to prepare. The price point was great for the serving size and I felt this meat was worth every penny. Now...the mac and cheese. If the lid to your to-go container is busting at the seams, you're doing it right. The flavor was great and the large shells are a good call to hold all the yummy sauce. I forgot about the delicious brisket for a few minutes and went ham on the mac and cheese. I only ordered the brisket and mac and cheese for the purpose of being judgmental and picky as any self-respecting BBQ joint should be able to handle these two staples. However, I thought the beef ribs were a bit over priced and probably would not order again. The sides were just average, with the mac and cheese the one I would order again. Wins: Perhaps the most tender and delicious brisket I've ever had. And I've had a lot. Perfect bark, tender beyond compare. I had the sliced sandwich on a perfect, sturdy brioche (?) roll. Sauce was thoughtfully put on the side, including other sauces that I didn't select to give me the option of trying them. I appreciated that, nice touch. The included small cole slaw and pickles and onions sides were perfect to cut the richness of the BBQ. My dining mate loved his pulled pork sandwich. Platters are probably slightly larger meat servings with the addition of homemade corn bread that my friend declared "delicious". Lots of other sides options (beans, mac n cheese) but we didn't take advantage of any. Losses: Not provided napkins automatically. Whaaaa? I had to get up to ask for some at the counter after the table requested them when the food was dropped off. In their defense they were very busy, but our request was forgotten. Providing packaged wet naps also seems like a no-brainer in a BBQ restaurant but there were none to be found. Because of the napkin/wet nap situation, I opted to use the restroom. The door sticks. Badly. For a minute there I thought I might end up staying the night. Bottom line: Maybe a better choice as take-out for now until they work out their indoor dining kinks. On the recommendation of several friends, I tried Monty's last night. Couldn't decide on what I wanted so I got some of everything. The ribs were absolutely perfect. Brisket sandwich is 10 stars, and the pulled pork was tremendous. I also enjoyed their baked beans, excellent consistency. The pickles were even great! I've tried every other BBQ place in the area and Monty's is the best I've had !!! One suggestion... they should get a food truck and do the Sandbox in Highlands next year. read more

Stopped in on Friday on Friday evening and ordered the rib and brisket combo. This is my favorite barbecue in the area. Excellent. I only ordered the smoked turkey breast and Mac and cheese, loved them both. I even loved the coleslaw and cornbread. Rarely do I even eat the cornbread, not worth the calories, but this cornbread was so delicious and I loved the darker color on top. The macaroni and cheese, so good. I love to load my roux with Coleman's mustard powder for a deeper flavor. This is the closest Mac n cheese I have ever ordered out that actually tastes homemade. The turkey was perfect for me. I ate it atop a shaved fennel, cilantro and spinach salad that I used the spicy vinegar based bbq sauce as a dressing. We asked for silverware and it was not provided. Also for the price, you'd expect a bigger portion. Local smoke bbq in red bank is a much better value and the food was excellent.
