We were quickly checked on by our waitress as soon as we sat down. We ordered a few different appetizers and drinks to start. I would recommend the arancini. We didn't realize how HUGE the portions were for main dishes so keep that in mind. I ordered a chicken parmesan and could barely finish it. The people keep hyping up Monty's, so I was glad that I was asked out on a date here a few weeks ago. Given how popular this place has remained, we were smart to arrive early and wait in line. Definitely bring an umbrella if you plan to do the same on a rainy day, we got soaked! Once the staff open up, folks are brought in and seated pretty quickly unless there is a wait. I really enjoyed the space, clearly converted from former warehouses or large workshops. The entry with the curtained off privacy is great for bad weather and also keeping guests seated focused on dining. We were thankful to sit at a window-side table, and, in the summer I imagine they open fully. The staff have good N/A and normal drink options for anyone, and we settled on a few of the N/A since we are trying to keep our intake down. After ordering calamari and our main meals, I was so surprised to see the size of the mains. The hostess confirmed that the vibe is more American-influenced Italian dining, which many families probably enjoy. The best chicken masala I've ever had! We first had reservations for six people, but they were so nice and they let us added a few more people and it was just amazing. The service is top-notch. We came here for my mother-in-law's birthday and were not disappointed. They had a wonderful kids menu which our kids ordered off of and loved everything. It felt like we were on vacation. Having grown up and lived in NJ for 40 years, I was excited to try Monty's Red Sauce since their menu items were inspired by Italian restaurants in NJ famous for all things marinara and mozzarella. Menu was limited but definitely something for everyone - and very reasonably priced. You won't find basic pasta dishes ridiculously overpriced like at most Italian restaurants in Portland. This is a casual, affordable, family restaurant Thank-you, Monty's! We ordered the burrata for an appetizer that came with some arugula and toasted Italian bread. It was good, nothing exceptional, but we weren't expecting it to be more than it was. Burrata needs no glorification, it's delicious as is. . For dinner, I chose the chicken parmesian as that is classic east coast, NJ Italian. The chicken breast was pounded thin, breaded and fried, topped with marinara and mozzarella. It was enough for 2 people or two meals! Very tasty. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the accompanying spaghetti which was overcooked and tasteless. No bite to it at all. My friend ordered the penne la vodka with sausage and it was clearly the star of the night. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente. I stood here being ignored by the servers for like 12 mins ? not sure why, if it was because i was by myself. host stand said doordash people go upstairs but i wasnt a door dash i was a in store pick up thru their website. after being ignored i approached the bar asking for help, met with rude looks. i get my food and they didn't give me any silverware for a to go order. when i got my food, i ordered the chicken parm and the cheese sticks. the cheese sticks were absolutely crispy and aesthetic but had no flavor. the chicken parm was also perfectly crispy and fresh but had 0 flavor. no garlic no oregano no pazazz. if the food would've been at least average i wouldn't even care the staff was so rude. the place looks like somewhere you'd want to hang and drink and wine but it was all bad vibes and overpriced Prego fake dishes. read more

Considering how their original sister restaurant, Montelupo Market, is one of my favorite restaurants in town, I've left Monty's both times feeling like it should really be a lot better. The dishes here are just bland. Not terrible, but just lacking flavors. The butter lettuce salad somehow didn't taste like much. The blue cheese dressing surprisingly added nothing to it, barely even blue cheesy. The calamari and burrata a similar meh story. For a restaurant with Red Sauce is the name, the red sauce here is super plain. Doesn't stick to the pasta hardly at all. The meatballs were really the only thing I've had here that had some decent flavor. It seems their trying the old American formula that enormous portion sizes equal good food, but I'm not falling for it. I will say the portion sizes are fair for the prices. The inside is nicely done and gets great afternoon light. Special shout out to the mid/late 80's music they had playing on a recent visit. The service and has always been friendly. I came here on a Friday night with a reservation for 8pm. It was pretty busy so I'm glad we had the reservation. It's a spacious restaurant so it didn't feel cramped. There are a lot of negative reviews focused on the staff. And I would admit our waitress was not very friendly but she took our order and brought our food. So I don't really care. She did the important stuff. I ordered the focaccia plate, Cesar salad, ravioli bolognese and the tiramisu. Everything was great. The Caesar salad was shockingly super delicious and we ordered the small to share and it was a lot for three people. Focaccia was great but that's expected. And the ravioli did not disappoint. The Wife and I had our first date in the Sellwood area on Milwaukie near Bybee at an amazing Mexican place that is no longer there (Iron Horse). Patterned after the great Italian places of New Jersey, it seemed to be just the place for us. We walked into the place, which sits in the same strip of shops as the Moreland Theater and the Limelight. It was busy and we thought we messed up by not having a reservation. We were seated however and as we perused the menu we were glad we did. The Wife ordered the Chicken Parm which comes complete with a full serving of spaghetti, it was obvious that there would be leftovers. I had the Baked Cheese Ravioli Bolognese, and it was amazing. The menu was chock full of must try items and we will be visiting many more times to get to the bottom of our list. As good as food is, the service was amazing. Attentive without being annoying, and everyone looked to be happy to be serving. We were surprised when we found out that Monty's had only been open about six months. A large open (can I say cavernous?) space with tall ceilings which can seem overwhelming at first, but paired with good lighting and fairly compact menu.... it works. When the place is full- as it was on our visit - it can get pretty loud in here, but that doesn't detract from the casual but somehow charming ambiance. It's "family friendly" and there's a lot of groups with kids in here so don't expect a refined dining experience (just being honest). That said, we three adults nevertheless had a great evening all around, with a super attentive waiter, pro servers who knew which dishes to clear and when (a rarity in PDX) and every one of our requests answered. There's a fairly brief wine and beer list, but Monty's has a nice selection of cocktails (I totally recommend the Cheap Thrills, a gin and herbsaint mix that should be on everyone's summer drink list). Our food came out hot and nicely plated, and between the Baked Ravioli Bolognese (enhanced by a perfect beef and pork ragu) , the Meatballs with Polenta (super fluffy and rich) and the Short Ribs (melt in your mouth) it was tough to choose a favorite; all were delightful. If there was a misstep, it would be the Butter lettuce salad, a promising mix of greens, fried pancetta and blue cheese, all of which got doused in way too many buckets of ranch dressing. I should probably knock a star off for that, but our group still downed that plate in total and declared it delish, so I'll let it slide. And we were simply too full for desert. We heard about this place through yelp and lived the area, so headed over after antiquing. The atmosphere is great and airy and the servers are very attentive. Food was wonderful as were the mocktails. I was so intrigued by the meatballs and polenta in the yelp photos, I knew I had to order it. Monty's is a newer restaurant In sellwood. I've been here a few times now and each time I have the same experience. The food is great, the service sucks. I recommend getting a reservation, they are on resy. They have you put a card down and it is $15 per person if you don't show up. When you sit down the restaurant is cute. The paintings and artwork are nice, the decor is cute. Your server will come by, and act as if you stepped on their cat's tail. You'll order something, and it'll be out. And that's fine, but they will make it seem like you asked for something so terrible. Food portions are huge. You could easily share a plate or do family style. Our server never came back so we sat for a long time after dinner. This was nice in the sense I enjoyed my company, but not in the sense that our server was mia and another server closed us out. So for the staff, I'd probably not recommend Monty's. There are plenty of good restaurants who have great staff in the area read more

We went here for my birthday on August 27th. Let me start by saying the food is delicious. The service on the other hand.... Our server not once asked us how anything was, she couldn't drop off food and drinks fast enough. To ask for anything it seemed to be a burden. We bought a bottle of wine for the 6 of us and let me tell you that bottle sat empty on the table the entire evening. When we wanted to order another glass our server was never around. We attempted to stop another server on their way back to the bar area, and she rolled her eyes and made us feel like a burden so much so we were just like never mind we don't need anything. It was honestly a little bizarre. After it was all done we had a $400+ conveniently gratuity was already included and not so much of a thank you for coming in, or anything being said for that matter. She just dropped off the check and off she went. We are an Italian family and to embody the culture of energy and good food... the service did not reflect that at all. I gave Monte's a try at the insistence of a co-worker. Since the closing of Portofino I have had a void to fill, and Monte's did just that! The Ravioli Bolognes was amazing, as was the Gnocchi. The calamari appetizer is as good as they come, yet hard to find, not rubbery or over breaded.....just right. We split the brick sized portion of Tiramisu, again as good as it gets. The service was perfect, making sure we were taken care of yet not overbearing. The only thing that was less than average were my drinks. I ordered a double neat, and I received either EXACTLY a double if not a tad short. I expect a minimum of two fingers in a highball glass, this was more like 1.5. Like a lot of people have mentioned, highly recommend making reservations! We made one for 5 pm on a Saturday and there was already a line when we arrived. The entire restaurant was pretty much full within a few minutes of opening. We didn't get seated until about 5:15ish. It took a while for our waitress to come acknowledge us and take our order but the food came out really quick. We tried the mozzarella sticks, gnocchi amatriciana, linguine Alfredo, and baked penne alla vodka. All of it was fine unfortunately nothing really stood out to us. If I'm being honest it was just like a slightly better Olive Garden. The ambiance was nice but I'm not sure I would come back again. Also, be aware they have limited high chairs so if you're bringing a little one be prepared (especially during the early dining hours) because we heard the table by us not able to get one. read more
