This place has like 5 different names. LOL. Red flag. The hotel here is funky and old, which is fine with me, but don't stay here if you expect some kind of high-end place. It's Mexican Hat, after all! :) We rented a suite (#14) - no dishtowels or paper towels, dishes still in the dishwasher, vinegar and cleaning stuff out on the counter. Not a big deal, but you get the sense that someone forgot they were cleaning the unit. The food in the restaurant was good (we just had breakfast one morning), but the one staff person there seemed super unhappy to be there and service was slow. Maybe they were the only person working there. If you, like we do, enjoy having an adult beverage after a long drive and exploring: bring your own. Even though the website says they have a liquor license, they do not sell any alcohol. There's a 7-11 half a mile away that sells beer and "spiked" low-alc drinks. read more

Pretty cool hotel built into the side of a cliff directly along the San Juan River. We stayed here for one night on our way to Monument Valley. The rooms are clean and good sized, and the bathroom included a full tub. We have a fridge in our room, and we appreciate that there are laundry facilities for guests as well. Really liked all of the outdoor spaces. There are lots of tables and chairs set up overlooking the river, and several balconies as well. Mexican Hat is really small - there are just two restaurants and one is here at the hotel. We ate dinner here and the food was pretty good and reasonably priced. I would stay here again if we end up in the area at another time. read more

Two rooms didn't have air conditioning. And they stole our hiking boots and then damage them. They were found 40 yards away from our room with the tongue cut with a knife. Clearly an employee is the one that stole them as they are the only ones that had access to the room well supposedly fixing the air conditioning unit. Do not stay there. You'll get no satisfaction from the owner as the suspect is her son the maintenance man. read more

Our one-night stay at the San Juan Inn in Mexican Hat, Utah was absolutely disgusting and completely unacceptable. From the moment we arrived, we felt like guest safety and basic cleanliness were clearly not a priority. At 9:14 p.m., I got an email saying our room key would be left on the ground directly under the doorknob. Yes--on the floor, outside the room. I saw multiple keys sitting outside other doors too. Anyone could have picked one up and walked into a room. This is not just lazy--it's a serious security risk. To make it worse, their own website claims they provide 24-hour service, saying: "We have a night phone located on the wall outside the front desk that rings directly to the night manager who will be available to support late arrivals." That's a lie. Instead of using this system, they chose to leave keys literally on the ground, like this was some kind of back-alley motel with zero standards. When we got into the room, we were immediately disgusted. There were flying bugs crawling all over everything--the bed, the bathroom, the floors, the windows. The bathroom window was absolutely swarming with insects, and because it doesn't seal properly, bugs were getting in all night. I woke up to a sink full of bug bodies. As if that weren't bad enough, the shampoo and conditioner were in cheap, home-style dispensers--the kind you can easily open and tamper with. Completely unsanitary and a huge health concern. There was also no information anywhere about front desk hours, restaurant details, or even how to connect to Wi-Fi. It felt like the bare minimum had been done to legally rent the room out, and that's it. No effort, no care, and clearly no respect for guests. Now, to be fair, the view from the room was beautiful and the woman who checked us out in the morning was super sweet--one of the only bright spots. But when we returned later to visit the gift shop, we were shocked. An older woman working behind the front desk was openly insulting a disabled vendor she buys product from--right in front of us. It was wildly inappropriate and uncomfortable to witness. And speaking of uncomfortable, the Native man working in the restaurant made us feel extremely uneasy. His attitude was off-putting, and the overall vibe was unwelcoming. This place is clearly running on autopilot, cutting corners everywhere and allowing unprofessional, even inappropriate behavior to go unchecked. I wouldn't stay here again if they paid me--and I'd seriously caution anyone considering it. The location may be scenic, but the operation behind it is a mess. read more

We drove over 20 miles to eat here because our guide recommended it and another couple recommended this restaurant. Especially, the fry bread and Mexican food. Whelp, we arrived at 10:30 on a Saturday morning. The neon sign stated " Open" was on and the sign at the door said "Seat Yourself ". So we seated ourselves, a couple minutes later, the server asked if we were from the hotel. We replied, no, immediately the server moved us and implied they were closed but she would see if we could get some food. I tried to order the vegetarian fry bread off the menu. The server stated " I gave you the breakfast menu". The breakfast and lunch menu are on the same sheet of paper. Just on different sides. Okay, my husband and I both ordered breakfast. Which we received cold. I asked if I could order fry bread with my breakfast. The answer was no. It was not available for breakfast. Then why is it on the menu, I thought to myself. My husband and I at this point did not want to ask for any condiments as not to annoy the server anymore. Well, I don't know why she had a change of heart but when we were done with our breakfast. The server offered fry bread but we must take it to go. Okay, we took the fry bread to go. We left and will never return nor will I recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a place to eat in the Monument Valley area. read more

This place is so old school it's a real key on a well burnished brass fob. Over the years, I've done the drive over the river going to Monument Valley, and the Res. I've always see the Inn, and thought it would be cool to stay there. This trip I did. The check-in was fast and smooth. My party had two rooms. They were not in the main long building. They were both different. The room was clean. The bed was comfortable. The view over the river was spectacular. That's not a word I use likely. The chairs across the parking lot gave a wonderful view of the river in the morning. There is an on premises restaurant, but we didn't use it. There are very few choices for food in Mexican Hat (plus Monument Valley) but this one was a winner. We ordered the fry bread cheeseburger. The waiter said how big its big so we should just split it, so couldn't argue that (but once it arrived I was definitely thinking hmm, coulda eaten the whole thing lol) he was a quirky guy, but what's "normal" anyway?! Friendly service, and then, a woman who id presume to be the owner or manager, stopped by our table to check on things. I was raving about the fry bread, which she makes by hand of course, and revealed her secret ingredient (sprite!) Overall it's a precious place, wedged between the river and the red walls of the earth, and a highlight of my southwest trip. read more

I stay 2 years ago in the Goulding resort and they ask too much for the rooms, last year I stay in the The view hotel and it was pricier and no restaurant it was close and all the guest there were going to the Goulding restaurant, that by the way the food is bad I don't even recommended eat over there. The restaurant over here is way much better, the rooms affordable definitely I will comeback. Between the Grand Canyon and Moab is a hotel/motel wasteland. We were leaving the Grand Canyon about 7pm and didn't have it in us to drive all the way to Moab (which turned out to be a good thing because ALL the hotels were booked). We were traveling with our dog which makes things MUCH more difficult in terms of finding a place to stay. We called the San Juan in, and they had a room AND they were pet friendly with a $15 fee. We got there around 10:45pm, the room was definitely sparse, but adequate. The bed was one of he most uncomfortable things I have ever encountered, but at least we weren't sleeping in the car. The room was very clean, and the cable worked. In the morning I was taking a shower in their TINY, dilapidated shower, when my husband flushed the toilet.... It literally scalded me so badly I had to jump out completely. The water didn't return to warm for a good two minutes. So be careful of that, I really have never seen that anywhere but in movies. I wouldn't call this place charming, cozy, or cute. It's a motel- but it provided everything we needed and it was clean. That's pretty much all you can ask for in the middle of nowhere. read more

This is our fourth visit to the San Juan Inn. We have previously had other rooms that are more updated. Sadly, this trip we got a room #2 on the first floor. That room was not very comfortable because the shower has black mold and is very small. The only ventilation is a window. The air conditioner is also extremely loud. We keep returning to the inn because the location is great, the restaurant is good and the staff are friendly. read more

It's definitely not the Wynn so if you don't set your expectations too high, you will enjoy it. The San Juan Inn is close to The Mexican Hat rock and is a short walk to a 7-11. It's also not too far from Monument Valley, Forrest Gump Hill (a location they used to shoot the scene where Forrest stops running across the country), GooseNecks State Park (very much worth visiting) and Valley of the Gods (do NOT follow Google Navigation directions unless you want to off-road for 15-20 minutes and end up nowhere!) read more

The fry bread taco was delicious and big enough for 2 meals. Great friendly service . Was not expecting an overnight trip but arrived at Monument valley too late to do the drive so decided to try again for sunrise. We ended up here because they allowed pets. Clean comfortable for the quick stay that it was. Careful getting ice from the laundry room two big steps down and although marked I had hands full and was distracted so I tumbled down and rolled both my ankles. I saved the glass bottles of a six pack and my left over dinner though. Lol it was not the establishments fault but definitely messed up my planned hiking the next day. Had yurt park but we never did get to see that part. Water way below that you could likely kayak or paddle board in and close to Monument Valley, Valley of the Gods and Mexican Hat. Stop over through Monument Valley. Just your average hotel in the middle of nowhere. The staff was super friendly and helpful. We had reserved a 2 bedroom room for my brother and I and it was clean and comfortable. The shower was huge and was completely tiled. The files were not flat and bothered my feet a bit but not enough to complain. We had dinner at the restaurant. The food was OK, not great but again, nothing to complain about. They have a bar but it was closed and they were serving a reduced menu for some reason. read more

We had reserved a suite with a deep tub but when we got there the room only had a shower. The room had lots of windows and not enough drapes to cover them. They had a security light right outside our room that went off and on all night long. The room was ok the location was pretty. Dining options are very limited and we drove 30 minutes to the next town to find something. Very basic hotel but a nice place to stop if you need to rest for the night. Stayed here for two nights while on a road trip in July 2015, but had been here back in 2006 as well. The rooms are okay. Some of them have three beds which is nice, but they aren't very comfortable. The sink isn't in the bathroom which is kind of odd. Overall though, the rooms are fine and can't complain too much. The restaurant is meh. I remember really liking it back in 06 but this time not as much. We went here our first night, and I got the veggie taco. I thought it was kind of odd that it came out in less than five minutes, but it was good - filling! We then ate breakfast here the next day, and my brother's plate was a little dirty and his cereal six months expired. I enjoyed my food as did my parents and family friends. Fast forward a few hours and my stomach starts getting very upset. Then my brothers, then my moms (my dad has a stomach made of steel, I swear). My brother and I figured it must be the restaurant and wouldn't go back, however there's not many restaurants whatsoever around here. Luckily there's a little store (where you check in) where you can get food. We got dinner and microwaved it there, then breakfast the next day (yogurt, muffins, etc). Free tea! The hotel is on the river which is lovely. There are tables overlooking it and you can go down to it as well. The hotel is situated near many scenic areas. read more

After an epic experience at Monument Valley, we stayed one night at the San Juan Inn. Their rooms were comfortable, with a tribal theme. The double queen room that was available to us was just enough space. There is the San Juan Bridge that over looks the river. When walking down the hill from the parking area you can access the river bend. There, my wife and I had so much fun. We did get friendly service. The front desk lady helped with directions and gave us a good recommendation were to dine at an outdoor setting called "The Swinging Steak" which is not too far from here. Even though we didn't eat at the hotels restaurant we fully enjoyed our stay. We spend time at the river and enjoyed star gazing at the balcony. If you can get a decent rate here at San Juan, I highly recommend this Inn for a road-trip stay. It is located between Monument Valley and Mexican Hat. read more

This is an interesting establishment. It's just across the San Juan from AZ. We pulled in here for a picnic lunch after a morning of exploring Monument Valley. As other Yelpers have said, this business is right over the river. We parked next to a nice picnic table, and absorbed the view of the river. We didn't know what to expect, but there was nothing open for breakfast in Mexican Hat, so we took a chance. Holy Smokes! Delicious breakfast. The applewood bacon omelet could have fed three people. Adorable, unique, family friendly inn! My sister and I stayed here not last night but the night before on our road trip from Vegas to Denver. I called for a reservation about 6 hours before we arrived, and I was able to book a room. Staff - extremely friendly and helpful. The woman at the front remembered me from my call 5 hours earlier. Also, the woman at the desk in the morning let my sister and I use her computer to check the weather in monarch's pass since the wifi was not working. Room - The room was small, but it was clean and comfortable. We had enough space for the two of us, and we felt safe. We had a room on the second level, and we had a beautiful view of the river in the morning. Cafe - Food was good, and the service was quick. We showed up about 15 min before closing, and they allowed us to get food. It was very nice of them. We recommend this hotel for a few days! It is right at the top of the Monument Valley where you can hike and take in the scenery! read more

I stayed here this past weekend with my boyfriend and it was a great experience! We managed to get one of the yurts that is offsite on a lot across the town (all of a quarter mile down the road), and it was adorable! We had the smallest one, but it was plenty of room for a couple. There was a seating area outside with views of the namesake Mexican Hat rock. AC unit and heater in the yurt, as well as our own toilet and shower - everything you could need! Loved this little place, will stay again if I'm back in the area! read more

The Inn is in a beautiful location along the San Juan River. My room was clean but rather bare-bones. There was no soap or a coffee maker. The air conditioning was great. I had a Navajo taco at the restaurant which was delicious! There were outdoor areas to sit near the river but most of the outdoor furniture was pretty beat up or broken. Parking was easy. read more

This hotel told me upon check in that they do not accept pre-payment from hotel websites, and that I would need to pay for the room. I later discovered that I was indeed double-charged, once by the website and once from the hotel, and had to fight for a refund. My fault for not questioning the host upon check-in, but they were basically going to rob me of the double-charge. It wasn't until I checked my credit card statements and demanded a refund that they succumbed, with the only remorse being from the hotel being "sorry". read more

The hotel itself is ok. The beds are pretty old but they have updated with new coverlets. The showers work pretty well and it was reasonably clean for such an old hotel. It is ridiculously overpriced at $99 for a low end hotel in the low season (January). The restaurant is terrible (see my other review) so adding that to the combination makes this a poor choice. Wifi was also broken - and the bad part is the lady had to know it was broken when we asked for the code but said nothing - just gave us the code. A much better option for the same price is the Hampton in Kayenta. Much nicer hotel, good restaurant in the hotel and everything works. 45 minute drive away and well worth the time to go there. read more

I have stayed here twice and if you know Utah like I do, you arnt going to find much for miles. This place does the job. Is it fancy? No, but most people spend only one night. It has clean beds a shower and working AC. That should be all you expect from a place like Mexican hat. Staff are friendly and there is a shop and restaurant next door. Oh and bug free. read more

It is a very quaint, simple hotel. Very close to Monument Valley and to Mexican Hat, a hill or a small mountain with a piece of stone on it which looks like a Mexican Hat. So this covers quaint; however, what makes this more than just a motel/hotel is the surrounding area. From the San Juan bridge overlooking the river that you can see outside your room to the beautiful surrounding areas that looks like time stood still and here is this hotel and Trading Post/gift shop.. They do a very good job of making you want to spend some time here. Get away from the hectic pace of city life, enjoy nature and the friendly people of Mexican Hat. I upgraded to 5 Stars because of the unique experience of Mexican Hat. San Juan Inn & Trading Post plays a part in this because of the locale. This is not a 5 Star hotel; however, the ambiance of being near Monument Valley, Mexican Hat and the San Juan River is a sight to behold. read more

CHARMING AND UNIQUE Stay here in this tiny village instead of in Blanding or Kayenta. The room was clean and southwest-y, beds had memory foam toppers, the price was right ($115 peak-season for large room with 3 beds) and the location was amazing. Perched on the edge of a cliff on the San Juan and next to the bridge, this inn is your last stop before the Navajo Nation/Reservation. After having a meal in their little restaurant, you can sit on a balcony or on the cliff and watch the sunset, listen to the river, and watch the stars come out. Mexican Hat is about as off the path as you can get, and few travelers can say they have stayed here. Aside from being remote, it's also a pleasant place to stay and confers bragging rights as one of the most remote and isolated settlements in the entire United States. Wonderful! read more

Not much to choose from in Mexican Hat, so this place had to do. I ordered the special breakfst burritto and it was anything but. The service was spotty, the quality of the food fair. The other guys ordered similar meals with the same reaction, nothing bad nothing good. Just food to fill your belly and ride on. read more

We made a reservation and the week before I called to verify and to let them know we would be arriving after hours. Brook said that would not be a problem and gave me her cell number to text her to let her know when we would be arriving. I texted 3 times. She never responded. Got there at midnight. Still no reply from Brook. Called the number on the door, saying for late check ins call. No answer. We had to find another hotel. Found one just down the street. Much nicer place. We also never received a call, apologizing or explaining. Not a way to do business in my opinion. read more

Horrible place, bathroom had been poorly updated but the rest of the room was extremely dated, slivers from wood tv stand. Had an issue we wanted taken care of and the maintenance man who happens to be the owners son accused us of the problem and threw many fbombs around our whole group.
