Wow. What a beautiful and bright new place to wait for trains. It's the complete opposite of Penn Station, filled with light, lovely artwork, and many corridors (with lots of signage!) to wait for your trains, whether it be the AC, LIRR, or Amtrak. They also have hand sanitizer everywhere. And while there is a rule for not sitting on stairs, I wish they were as serious about enforcing masks over noses/on that they are about making sure people aren't sitting in places that weren't constructed for sitting. I'm sure this will be even better when the food court (and Magnolia Bakery!) open in Fall 2021.

But there is a nice Cafe car and plenty of restrooms in every car. The seats are individual bucket seat style, so they are roomy. The overhead compartments were large and easy to open. The Acela operator checking for tickets was very friendly.

For shorter trips, such as the two times we went to Wilmington, DE, we used the regional train as the ride wasn't very long. Previously, we took the Acela from DC to Boston and back. We enjoyed the trip coming and going. Before that, we would take a plane from IAD to BOS. After awhile, we got so tired of that due to more often than not, flights were delayed either coming or going. Once we had a three hour delay when leaving Boston. I thought to myself, if we took the train, we would have been just about halfway home. Last month, we took the Acela to Boston and back. We discovered that one now has to reserve their seats on the Acela. We were in DC a month before our trip so we stopped in at Union Station and did our reservations and seat assignment with a ticket agent. At this time, there was a lot of hype about the new Acela trains which were supposed to be up and running when it was time for us to travel. Well...yes and no. When the ticket agent assigned our seats, she was using a chart for the new Acela. Amtrak, online, claimed that they would clearly mark their schedules to say if one would get an old train or a new one. They weren't honest, as the schedules didn't have such markings. To add to this, the seat layouts on the new trains were rather strange. Some seats, for no apparent reason, were facing backwards, while others were facing forward. Fast forward to the day we took the train. We got to Union Station early and headed to the red cap area as we like having help with our bags. Heading out to the train, we fully expected to see a brand-new train... but no. Then we wondered whether our assigned seats (by number) actually existed. They did, indeed, exist, thankfully. The train left on time, and we arrived in Boston on time. As for the ride, yes, some areas have bumpy rides while others are smoother. When we got to Boston, on the track next to us, a brand new Acela was boarding heading to DC. And yes, we caught a glimpse of a few random seats facing the rear. As an aside, as we left Philadelphia, we saw several new Acelas parked in the rail yard and wondered why they weren't in service. The train back to DC was also an old train. My seat was a stark reminder of just how old and worn the train was, as it had a saggy spot that wasn't very comfortable. In the end, we thought seat assignments, in general, were a good idea. It means that people who are traveling with another person won't have to worry about being separated. And, next time we ride the Acela (whenever that may be) we hope we will get a new train.

Because Amtrak has changed my reservation three times in three months. I booked my trip to Boston early because it was July 3rd and America's 250th so I figured the train may be crowded. Since then, I keep getting canceled trains and car reassignments. I don't understand why as these are trains that run daily. Additionally, the emails give me a link to use in the app if I would like view the changes or make other changes. The links never work! Hence, my ongoing communication with customer service. I found out this last time that I can't access the app until the changes are confirmed. Isn't that the point of the link in the email? At this point I'm ready to book a refundable backup airline reservation as I'm getting leery that Amtrak may just cancel everything at the last minute.

It connects over 500 destinations, including big cities like Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Portland, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Washington, D.C. and more. One time I thought I wanted to arrive in NYC by train from Miami Florida. It's the old romantic movies I had seen creating visions of glamour and excitement as you are welcomed in Penn Station. Even though I was being met by my daughter I anticipated the glamour of arrival. I also remembered my train ride from Florida to New York with my Mother when I was little. I had so much fun and my mother had motion sickness the whole way! As I should have known a trip of that length would be uncomfortable unless you had a sleeping car. The train was crowded too because I decided to attempt this in July. All the kids were out of school and going to theme parks. The bathroom became filthy in time and the children impatient with the ride. The parents impatient with the children. I sat with my headphones music blasting and looked out the window during daylight hours. The experience was miserable on the return trip also because I cried all the way back to Florida. I had plenty of time during that train ride to make a decision and a plan to move back to NYC. The experience is not one I want to repeat. We were held up in Florida by railroad crossings during Florida tropical downpours. In Washington D.C. we were held up by train problems and train traffic trying to get in and out. When I finally arrived my daughter greeted me with a look of chagrin because she couldn't find me. This was pre cell phones. By the time I arrived I was traveling a full 24 hours at least. From then on I took a plane! I'm not saying I wouldn't try one of their travel packages for a short excursion. I do think car travel is still my favorite!

They handled our pickup from LGA to our Midtown hotel and later our return trip back to the airport, and both rides were flawless. This was truly 5-star service and one part of the trip I didn't have to worry about at all. The vehicles were clean and comfortable, communication was clear, and everything ran exactly on time. It was worth every penny compared to mass transit or other ride services. What really set them apart was their customer service. When we were dropped off at the airport, my son accidentally left his phone in the car. Umar went out of his way to drive all the way back around and personally return the phone to us--no hesitation, no attitude, just genuine care and professionalism. I can't recommend Precision NY Chauffeur Service enough. If you want reliable, stress-free transportation in NYC, this is the company to use.
