Everything was pretty expensive, but sadly that's to be expected at a small business like this. I purchased a yard and a half of pretty pink and yellow fabric that I intend to turn into a pillow. It was about $15. There were a group of older ladies in the back of the store who were working on projects and chatting. One of them worked at the store, and she came up to check on us and answer questions. She also gave me a pamphlet that showcased all their upcoming classes and events (including a quilting retreat???), which I assume also accounted for the group in the back. I would have been interested in a couple of the beginner-friendly events, except that they were also pretty expensive. Also, they didn't have any classes for kids, which surprised me. I feel like that sort of thing would be good to have and promote to help stay in business these days. Still, hopefully they're doing well, especially after Jo-Ann closed.

I appreciated the offer because while I've learned - and am still learning - about yarn substitution, it's still one of those tasks I'd rather get expert-level help with. So yesterday I swung by in-person to ask about the yarns. I made sure to paste ALL the yarn and needle info from my knitting instructions on my phone to show whoever was going to help me. There was a class going on and only one person was available to help (although she looked busy preparing something for the class while standing at a counter). I first asked for Cascade 220. The staffer wasn't sure of that particular line, so she asked for the weight. The yarn thickness category designated by the Craft Yarn Council (CYC) was the LAST thing on my mind. I'm not a vintage-only knitter or anything, and I dare call myself a prolific maker, but I'd say only half of the patterns I've used since I started knitting in the 1990s include the CYC's yarn weight standards' symbol: an illustrated yarn skein with its CYC category number. I'm more used to seeing it on actual yarn labels, so it's not my habit to note it when looking for yarn in-person. Also, no one asked me for the CYC weight when I called last week; we were all on the same wavelength during that call. So, I told the staffer the GRAM weight of the skein, and the conversation immediately shifted. As nice as this staffer was, she walked me over to a wall of yarn, showed me the store's copy of the CYC yarn weight standards chart, and started explaining how yarn weights are determined from lace to jumbo. I didn't bother interrupting her to say anything in my defense. When she first asked me for the yarn weight, I didn't ask "do you mean the physical mass of the yarn or the yarn thickness category?" But as someone representing Nimble Fingers, neither did she. And I do understand there may have been an additional disconnect. While at the wall pointing out certain yarns, the staffer mentioned that the store's yarns are organized by CYC weight. So who knows, right? Maybe she first asked me about the yarn weight to figure out where to send me on their yarn wall while I wandered the store with a near-empty tote bag big enough to smuggle home a sheep. Anyway... At first she didn't want to look at the typed yarn info on my phone for some reason. And without my reading glasses I rarely need while out 'n' about, I fumbled a bit reading my well-organized yarn notes - with highlighted needle sizes and skein amounts - out loud, which I'm sure added to me looking like a fish out of water. The staffer pointed out some yarns that might work as substitutions, and she suggested that I take a picture of them, which I did, so I could think more about my ultimate choice. But because yarn substitution is usually more nuanced than matching a thickness category and calling it a day, I was super disappointed that I clearly wasn't talking to whoever was on the phone last week. I'd been practicing my brioche stitch on acrylic stash yarn for a few months. I was SO ready to buy the yarn for my project. So that happened. The staffer was pleasant enough throughout the interaction, and even dropped a now-fashionable "y'all" on your Cousin Kerstin. But honestly, experiences like this can hit differently for some BIPOC makers, especially newer knitters navigating crafting spaces where assumptions about knowledge and belonging can feel loaded, like when my answer to this staffer's yarn weight question was apparently the "wrong" one. I also noticed an older 2019 customer photo on this Yelp page showing a much larger yarn selection, so I'm not sure if the store layout has changed or if there are additional areas I wasn't shown, but I was only shown a single wall of yarn during my visit. Between the awkward interaction that didn't match the informed help I got over the phone, the overall limited selection, and the fact that we took the bus out there specifically looking for yarn options I can't usually find at chain craft stores, I don't see myself making the trip again.

Out of sheer frustration, disappointment and disgust, I am updating my review due to recent events…read morethat have transpired. Approximately one month ago, I came to It's a Stitch to purchase a new Bernina sewing machine. I had done extensive research regarding which machines would suit my needs; I had narrowed my choices down to two models. I currently own a Bernina, although it is a basic mechanical machine that I had purchased new about 30 years ago. Even though it continues to run like a charm, I wanted a more extensive and diverse machine available to me; since I have very specific sewing habits, however, their top-of-the-line models were not even being considered. Make no mistakes: Berninas are not cheap and they are (in my eyes) a lifetime investment. I did not take my choices or my purchase lightly and without great thought. When I came, I looked at the two models I considered and practiced a few stitches on the higher-priced one. Decision made! I placed my order, charged it to my credit card (and subsequently paid for it) and was told that my brand new machine would be in the store from the warehouse in about a month. A call this week from Sarah informed me that the model I ordered is no longer available. As my heart sank, I was offered the following to "make things right": 1. Purchase the floor model, which according to Sarah had only been used "slightly" and was in great condition; price would be what I had already paid for the new machine, but I would receive a $50 store credit. I declined that offer. She suggested I call back the following day to see if something better could be worked out. 2. Or, I could purchase a much more expensive machine (double what I had already paid) with features I did not want nor did I need. Also declined. 3. A call back the following day got me an offer for the same floor model at $100 off, but it was revealed that "we can't locate the box for it" and then I recalled that when I had tested this machine, the manual could not be located either (because I had specifically asked to see it and they couldn't find it). This offer was also declined. I opted to return to the store for a full refund. No apologies were given and no farewells offered when I left. I will purchase a different model at an entirely different Bernina dealer. To suggest that a customer spend nearly $2K on a demo machine with no box and most likely no manual and have that be the best offer available when they have already PAID FOR a new machine is downright offensive. This is my final encounter with It's a Stitch. We're done.

I remember this place when it was an actually sewing machine shop and a fabric store. now there's just a bunch of pre-cuts on the wall and it's not a fabric stor. Buy your machine there because the service phenomenal the repair services phenomenal. just go somewhere else for classes and go somewhere else for your fabric it's just not a fabric store anymore. Things change in business , so i am sure there must have been a good reason for the change, it just wasnt a good change for quilters. You will not find a better shop in Houston to buy a Bernina sewing machine, they know their machines and their service department also knows their machines.

Well sadly I only spent a few minutes in here, because I am a knitter and this place is devoted to…read moreneedlepoint, but it looks like the kind of place my dear great grandmother would have dreamed of as her version of Heaven on Earth. In fact I'm quite sure I remember her describing this place to me when she gave her Sunday lectures on the world yet to come...Anyway! It's in a cute small converted house. It's very pleasantly lighted and decorated - you really do feel like you walked into your granny's house when you first walk in. They have a space devoted to craft circles, and they have multiple displays of nice threads set up in several different rooms. In the back room they have the walls completed covered with various threads. The ladies working there (and even the ladies just shopping there) were very nice about re-directing me when they realized I was a lost little knitter. They provided a good list of other places to check (the first one I went to, I loved - Nimblefingers) and were generally just very friendly and welcoming.

I paid for an event hosted by The Yarn Store Boutique (why is it a "Store Boutique" anyway? That's…read morenot a thing). This event, advertised as Dumpling Night at a local restaurant, left me feeling deeply uncomfortable, embarrassed, and disappointed. Even my guest was made to feel so awkward, she left after only four minutes. To start: There was no welcome, no posted schedule, and no signage to identify seating or class tables. But a random person (whom I can only assume was the event organizer and/or owner of The Yarn Shop Boutique Store Mart Shoppe Market) approached to let us know we were "at the wrong table." I'm not sure how we were supposed to know that, but we were instructed to sit at a different table, which had limited options for our party of three. The organizer hummed in disapproval at US, sighing and saying, "I guess it's OK that you sit here." The seating situation was unpleasant: we were crammed in so tightly there was barely room to get to the buffet, let alone have working space for a hands-on class. The tables were laid out ineffectively, leaving wasted space near the walls. It's clear the restaurant doesn't have event management experience (and I hope it's clear by this review that I actually DO). The poor waiters, when they were visible, were clearly overwhelmed and struggling with the onslaught of customers shouting drink orders at them haphazardly, and it was obvious that the restaurant itself has poor management. My third guest had arrived with my friend and me, but left within minutes due to the judgmental stares directed at her visible tattoos from other guests. The buffet was laid out and the roll-top chafing dish lids were open, but when I got a plate and started to get food, another woman (I later found out she was the restaurant owner) loudly informed me that "it wasn't time to eat yet." I've been to plenty of other events; generally when the lids are up, then it should be open season for buffet. If your restaurant cannot figure out how to roll the lids down to keep the food warm and fresh before serving time, then maybe remove the stack of plates until it IS time to eat. Moments later, I glanced around and noticed a few other guests already eating. I guess I wasn't special enough, and that kind of selective enforcement feels pretty bad when you've paid to be there. After I sat back down from that embarrassing moment, the same woman (the owner) reached over and grabbed the glass of water that had just been placed in front of me, asking "you're not drinking water, right?" as she moved away from me, my glass in her hand. I watched her gift my water to another person. Ma'am, I am not a data center; my water would have been ecologically and ethically consumed. The knitting class was advertised as beginner-friendly but it was not. The paper instructions were written for intermediate+ students. The teachers were given a quick introduction but spent the "class" just socializing with people they already knew so I felt like I was not receiving the guidance and instruction I had paid for. Later, a stranger sat down near my friend and, without so much as a hello, began criticizing her technique. Thick oil from her food dripping down her chin, the stranger watched my friend (who is a knitting beginner) and made biting comments about her skill until we got up and left. Of course this wasn't the fault of the organizers or the restaurant, but this is a review of the entire experience that left me feeling like an unwelcome crasher at an invite-only VIP event, instead of an actual paying customer. The food was tasteless and bland, and didn't match the Asian theme implied by the event organizers. While I'm on the subject of decor: the restaurant's walls feature artwork depicting what I assume are portraits of customers - except that every woman drawn has comically exaggerated breasts. I would guess no fewer than 50 portraits painted on the walls, and 50 sets of large breasts dripping onto their cartoon dinner tables. I mention this only because it made for an interesting backdrop to the surprise group prayer that kicked off the event. A performative mandatory prayer at a public and paid-for event. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the holy breasts, I guess. I wanted a fun, welcoming, beginner crafting night with a chance to make friends and learn about a potential new hobby. What I got was disorganization, apparent favoritism, no instruction, and an exclusionary environment. I won't be back to either the yarn store or this particular restaurant. Amen.

And of course, I end up purchasing the yarn and pattern to make something. Love this store and would recommend! Lots of variety in needles, hooks, and yarn, and price points for every shopper.
