I have gotten a facial at various places in NYC and this place is by far my favorite. If you're looking for a fancy, ritzy place (e.g instagrammable, champagne on hand, etc) then this might not be the place for you. This spa is very simple and unassuming but they get the work done. Now on to the actual treatment.. My friends rave about yuko (She did my facial once and I understand why) but I am loyal to my girl ikumi. They're both very good and detailed. I've never felt rush. As far as the results go, I always leave with a lot more redness and "bumps" on my face but this is expected given how they are so thorough with their extractions. The redness and bumps go away within a day or two for me. Then this leaves my face glowy! Of course If this is not what you prefer then I would recommend to let them know in advance. My only complaint probably is that they leave the room as they wait for the mask to work it's magic. It would be great if they could give a hand massage or something instead of leaving. The spa was gracious enough to squeeze me in for a same day deep pore cleansing facial. The atmosphere was very calming, and relaxing. I was taken to my room, for my treatment. My favorite spa in NYC. Finally I found a place I'm willing to go back to on a regular basis. I've been to a few different spas in the city of all different price ranges. Heyday, silver mirror, and rescue spa. Moonflower definitely hits the sweet spot. It's not a bougie, luxury spa like Rescue - but it's clean, quiet and peaceful which is what I'm looking for as my regular to-go facial spot. My aesthetician, Yuko, was amazing. She extracted carefully and thoroughly. Her fingers were so gentle on my face. The creams and masks used during the facial were so soothing and hydrating - honestly I was shocked at how NOT red my face was after my session. My friend who did hers at the same time with Ikumi also loved her session. We both agreed we would come back to this spa over and over again. I also appreciate how kind and unpretentious the staff is. I find that in a lot of spas aestheticians either shame you about your skin condition or shame you for not buying their spa products. I was glad that I only chose the 15 mins one that is included in any treatment you choose at this place instead of the deep cleaning, which is longer and you will need to pay extra for. I felt the lady was literally pinching my face to pop the whiteheads, instead of using tools, which is usually what you get during facials. If I want my pimples to be popped, I can just do it myself at home instead of paying $170 including tips to let someone else do it for me. I have many whiteheads. I went here as a birthday treat for myself, and given the fantastic Yelp reviews I read I expected it to be prefect. I should probably add that it was my first time ever at a spa as well. Since my main issue with this place came from a missed communication with the woman at the front desk, I'm going to start with the *good* part of my experience here. I booked a 60 min Swedish massage and a 45 min "mini" facial-both were AMAZING! I had to apologize to my therapist that day, because I fell asleep midway!! That is how relaxing it was. She politely offered to hook my iPod up to play my own music, but as someone who has a laughable taste for lewd Top 40 hits and 2 Chainz, I declined. Every single bit of tension I had in my back was thoroughly smoothed out by the time I was done. My facial was equally great- my skin looked altogether brighter, super clean, and fresh-and thank you to my facialist for the free samples! Now, for the bad: I looked over the prices on the Moonflower Spa's website so I had a pretty good idea of what I was going to be paying before I came in. However, when it came time for me to pay my bill for the day, the receipt listed a price a full $50 more than what I was expecting! Even including a generous tip for my therapist and facialist for the day, that makes no sense. I paid it anyway, figuring that maybe their price list online was just outdated. On my way out, though, the woman at the front desk called me and told me to come back because she'd accidentally over charged me. She then gave me back less than half of what she'd over charged me, claiming the rest was for "tip". Luckily I was super zen from just having experienced their excellent services, and kind of confused as to what an appropriate tip would be anyway, so I let it go. In a city with a spa for every budget and need, it is still a treat to find a perfect match.  In the case of Moonflower Spa, I found an ideal junction between quality, ambience, and price, for facials specifically. This day spa is tucked inside a small 3rd floor space on Library Way, aka 41st Street, which directly faces the entrance of the New York Public Library's main branch.  Moonflower is Japanese owned and operated, and serves many Japanese clients, which informs the level of service provided.  It is not high-end; the rooms and common area are simply furnished, but avoids the cheap look that other spas retreat behind dim lighting to hide.  The spare use of accents like pebble walkways, a quasi rock garden, sliding door panels, and rice paper art help. Check-in is quick, treatments are timely, service is courteous.  The aestheticians are attentive, skilled, and unfailingly considerate.  The spa menu includes basic deep tissue and Swedish massages, and a body scrub.  Although these are fine, their specialty are facials, and they offer over a dozen types catering to sensitive skin, anti-aging, acne-prone skin, for men or teens, targeting the back, and more.  Of these, I've had their Signature ($85, 60 min) and Aromatherapy Renew Rose ($95, 60 min) facials, which both include deftly performed light extractions (which can be refused).  The treatments are thorough and relaxing, with the least comfortable part, extractions, performed midway after a steam. Prior to finding Moonflower, I've accompanied a friend with very sensitive skin to quite a few other spas, who invariably broke out after treatments that were supposed to avoid that.  The Sensitive Skin ($105 for 75 min) facial at Moonflower ended the search for a facial she could tolerate. Even better, she recently switched to the Signature, and has had no reaction save the intended one. Just wanted to start off with the ambience and people working here are super sweet and nice, but I am very disappointed with my facial for the price. I treated my friend for her birthday to the acne therapy ($140) and I got the deep pore cleansing ($115) and we both felt like the extractions were not done properly. I do facials every month with my esthetician and am not unfamiliar with the process. It was strange these extractions are done with hands in gloves rather than lancers and tools. My skin is super congested and deeply clogged and hand extractions really will not do. Both my friend and I experienced persistent squeezing of the same spot unsure if anything was even declogged. There were obvious clogged pores that were missed and areas where it was not fully cleaned and extracted making a new white head appear. Also having a clay mask right after extractions seems like a big no no, not only does it sting, but the clay can go into the open pores. My friend introduced me to this place years ago and I have been coming here since. I don't know why I didn't yelp this earlier! Japanese spa, small, clean, comfortable and unpretentious. I have very sensitive skin and many times before at other spa's I break out more after a facial. Finally I found this place that gives, in my opinion the best facials for people with sensitive skin. They use all Dermalogica products which I love and their prices are very reasonable. The deep pore cleansing package (5x) is about $425 plus tax which is about $85 plus tax per facial. Not bad! I'm now loving the C+C facial which makes my skin feel so refreshed and energized. I hear extractions from other places can be painful and leaving the skin red for days, but I have never experienced that with Laila, I often fall asleep during her extractions that is how skillful she is with her technique and she takes her time working around my entire face carefully. Everyone at Moonflower speaks softly, they open and close doors gently and try to make you feel as relaxed as possible. Their rooms are clean and simple in decor and they have dim lighting and soothing music in the back ground. They make me feel like I am the ONLY customer in the establishment even if many other rooms are being occupied and most importantly that I count and not just another customer... I love this place! I had a really good experience at Moonflower Spa. After work one day, I just felt like I wanted to get a facial. I called Moonflower Spa and they were able to get me an appointment after work. I get off the third floor elevator and immediately I am in a calm and serene reception area. I barely waited 5 minutes when the facialist came out and led me to the private rooms. The room was pretty spacious for one person, with very clean and minimalist decorations. I felt at ease right away. I had the signature facial, which is $75 dollars for 60 minutes with light extractions. My facialist was gentle and caring but at the same time made sure that my skin was properly cleaned. Chizuru came to the rescue! She's soft spoken and slender, but she will hurt you in all the right ways. Here's why you should see her: -She's a personal trainer -She's a trained dancer -She's a skilled masseuse And Chizuru has been doing all of the above for a very long time. Best 80 minutes of de-stress massage I've ever experienced. Well worth the $120. (You can also purchase 5 session packages at a discount.) I developed adult acne in my late 20s. My skin has gone a lot better with facials and better diet. My skin gets pretty congested but their extractions are thorough. I love they use a needle to lance pimples. I might be a little red after but then it goes away quickly. I've gone twice since they re-open with COVID. It's easy to make an appointment via email. Upon arrival they take your temperature. Then I was asked if needed to use the restroom before escorted to my room for my facial. No one in the waiting area. Moonflower Spa is such a peaceful Japanese style spa. The moment you walk in you're in a dimmed atmosphere surrounded by wood and a nice ambiance. I've been there twice so far and wish I could go back every month, but it is relatively expensive. It's so worth it though, I actually see visible results that last for months. I have combination oily, sensitive, acne prone skin that suffers from hyper pigmentation and a few acne scars. My main target of going was to improve my skin tone and texture and reduce acne. At first I thought I needed the intensive acne facial with high frequency machine, but the facialist recommended against it as she said I really didn't need that intense of a treatment. She suggested I get the Radiant Skin Facial (75 mins, $135) which was absolutely an amazing experience. This facial consists of several masks, but most importantly a glycolic peel. The way they massage and cleanse your face is so relaxing and nonabrasive. They also take great measures to fully cleanse both your face and your neck and decollete area. I usually fall asleep during my facial and wake up with glowing, hydrated skin. I've had the Radiant Skin Facial twice at this point and I can say there is a visible difference in terms of texture of my face. It looks so clear and smooth. Often times, my skin, especially around the nose area, can get congested and bumpy, but this facial evened everything out as well as extracted a lot of the gunk in the depths of my skin. The extraction portion is a bit uncomfortable, and sometimes if there is a cystic pimple they might need to use a needle, but it works. All of the pimples extracted have never left a mark on my face and have healed in the correct direction as the elasticity of my skin. I can't say enough good things about this place, I definitely intend on going back for another facial and microdermabrasion. read more

As part of my new year resolution and holiday self gifting, I am committed to a monthly facial treatment. The trick is to find a convenient location. It's almost like the gym, you'll only go when it is convenient. There are plenty options in Chinatown but with the cheap price and out of the way locations, I am never able to make it a priority. Moonflower is located just by grand central and offers the early bird rate during lunch time. The check in is pretty swift and seamless. I didn't even have to wait a minute before I got called to a private room. She told me to change and go under the blanket. I immediately felt relaxed with the dim lighting and soothing music. It was my first visit and Yuko suggested the signature facial which was for about an hour. She asked if I want extractions and she also asked if I want 5 or 15 minutes. The process is very similar to ones I had from Chinatown. She is much gentler with everything, cleaning, massage, extractions, application of creams. They use dermalogica products which is great for sensitive skin. She didn't try to sell any products which I appreciated a great deal. She also told me if I got infections or flare ups, I can call back so she can take another look. She didn't even wait for the tips. After she said bye, she went straight away to the next treatment room. I like that attitude. Ten minutes later, I hear the door open and a whispering conversation takes place. I hear the door close and a different lady continues my massage! I came to this place because of the yelp reviews during my visit for a long weekend. My goal was to have a clean skin during a girls weekend but instead I ended up with breakout. I had booked deep clean pore cleanse, but very clearly emphasized that I have extra sensitive skin and would like to avoid any mark or irritation during the weekend. This is not my first pore cleansing facial- I do this monthly at my spa. So I know what would work and not work for my skin. The message was not clear somehow and she started extracting pores and pimples I didn't even know they existed. The result was my skin being irritated beyond imagination and breaking out on every inch of my face. I walked around with more red spots and pimples that I had during my teenage years and they didn't heal until 1 month later. I would never go back nor recommend this place. A spa trip that was supposed to be relaxing and giving me glowing skin turned my weekend in a disaster skin that makeup couldn't cover due to all the bumps. read more

I should probably start this review by saying that prior to Moonflower, I have never had a facial in my life. For the record, I am 36...yeah yeah...I know...what a barbarian... Part of the reason is because I have acne scarring and have always felt really self-conscious about people touching my face. However, I knew I had to get over my fears and start taking care of my skin. Thanks to you Yelpers, I chose Moonflower and booked an appointment with Yuko (she's awesome and very nice) for a deep pore facial. And after 3 appointments, I just had to shake myself out of my Yelping laziness and write a review especially for those of you who are fearful and/or new to the facial/spa experience. Also, reading reviews of other spas shocked me (room sharing? painful extractions? post-facial breakouts? bitchy aestheticians? only 20 minutes?! wow....) because my experience at Moonflower was nothing but relaxing and therapeutic with very very positive results. I feel like my skin is finally being healed of all the damage and neglect I put it through! When I arrived, I was pleased to see how calm and tasteful the salon was. I was led to a private room where I changed out of my sweater and into a wrap thingy. Light classical softly played in the background. The room was clean with dimmed lights and some Japanese touches in the decor. Hooks and baskets are provided for you clothes and bag(s). And during the 1.5 hours (yep--you read that right..my facial was always at least 1.5 hours!), I was in that room, it was nothing but quiet, serene, peaceful. I guess it is the closest I can get to my having my very own sensory deprivation tank! Yuko and I spent a few minutes talking about what to expect, what I am currently using on my face (makeup, skin care regimen, etc) and because my skin was really really clogged and damaged, she recommended that I start with an appointment every 2 weeks until she could get to know my skin and see the progress and then move to facials every 4 weeks, preferably a week before my "cycle," which is when I break out the most. So with that, I lay back onto the table and she turned on the steam machine and began my massaging in a cream cleanser to remove my makeup. After wiping off the cleanser with a damp cloth, she massaged in another lotion and massaged my face, neck and shoulders. She was very sensitive to how much pressure I wanted and asked each time she increased pressure if it was too much. Super-relaxing! She then took a damp cloth and covered my eyes and then turned up the lights so that she could begin the extractions. She asked me about my threshhold for pain. I guess mine is pretty high because while the occasional extraction can feel a little sharp, for the most part, it wasn't bad. The first 2 times she did extractions, she only used her gloved fingers and a paper towel. The 3rd time, she used the lancet so that she could get the more deeply impacted clogs. And she did just one to see whether I could withstand it first (to me, not painful at all). She stopped occasionally to see if I was bearing up ok too. I think it is also important to note that you should not expect every blackhead to be extracted. That's just not good for your skin, especially if you are only starting out. But each time I went back, she did do more and more. This last time she must have spent a good 15-20 mins doing extractions. At the end, she wiped my face with a soothing antiseptic. After that, she massaged in a very gentle exfoliating cream and wiped it off again with some damp cloths. She then applied a nice and tingly clay mask. She covered my eyes again with a damp cloth, turned down the lights and left the room for about 10 mins. This is a great time for a catnap! She then came back in, wiped off the mask with damp cloths and applied a super cool gel calming mask. It smells really nice! She covered my face with cool damp cloths to allow the gel to absorb into my skin and left me for another 15 mins. Yay! Another great opportunity for a catnap! She came in again, removed the residue and then gently tapped in some eye cream and then massaged in some moisturizer. And that was it! She also gave me a bunch of Dermalogica samples (I am a fan of the oil control lotion, thermafoliant scrub and overnight clearing gel now!) too but did not push product. She also made recommendations on care between facials. Like I mentioned before, this was my first facial experience and after my 2nd appointment, I knew that I wanted to do this on a regular basis, so I booked the package of 5 (about $85 per session). I left a $20 tip (like most Japanese businesses, there are small little envelopes at the cashier for cash tips). If you are hesitant about getting a facial because of fear/horror stories, I can't recommend Moonflower enough! BEWARE: employees don't know how to properly do extractions I got a facial from Yotoko and was really disappointed b/c she had no idea what she was doing. I was breaking out on my face and having had facials before, I assumed that any zit would be off limits for extraction or popping, but no, not for Yotoko. She went straight for and popped a huge zit on my face, which was VERY painful. Sure, I could have told her to not extract that huge zit but I assumed any respectable spa that routinely performs facials would know this. Not true for Moonflower Spa. By the time I could say anything, it was too late and the damage and scaring had already been done. I'd highly recommend avoiding this place at all costs if you have sensitive or acne prone skin, and don't want scars from extractions. Yes, the place is clean and the staff is very courteous and professional; this place provides great value for the price (90 min. facial for less than $100). HOWEVER, I don't believe employees are trained to do proper extractions. read more

I went yesterday and decided to wait a little and see how my skin reacts to write a review... so far my skin looks FABÜ!! Seeing all the awesome reviews on Moonflower Spa, I decided to take a chance (+ my face really needs the pampering...) Entering the salon, I just felt a sense of serenity. The place is so clean and with soothing Japanese instrumentals playing softly, I felt for a second there that I was in Japan.. I was greeted by a very nice lady who checked me in, in 5 minutes I was led to a private room by my facialist, Laila. After stripping down and putting on my gown, I laid down on their comfy bed. Laila stripped the makeup off my face and analyzed my skin. And then she was off with and enzyme peel and extractions. The extraction were painless!!!!! I was completely amazed at this... She then continued with exfoliation, mask, massage.. lets just say I fell asleep. After my 75 minutes were done, I was shown a clean and glowing face. I was so impressed with my skin, even my co-worker and OH was impressed. Heaven! I had my first experience here today and I am already plotting my next mental health day so I can get back there sooner rather than later. Moonflower is an affordable spa with expensive taste. I know a thing or two about state of mind, so I felt right at home. I booked a weekday facial and massage package deal and was really excited to spend an hour working on the two things I needed the most in my life. My facial was fantastic. I booked a "Glow" facial and it did just that. It was so effective that Sarah, my aesthetician, squealed when she was finished. I loved her positive attitude throughout, and I especially enjoyed how proud she was of her work. Heck I was proud of her! My skin can be tricky to figure out. It can look ok, but you have to really look closely and dig deep (literally and figuratively) to get at what's causing the dull cloudy look. I really appreciated how deeply and thoroughly she went with extractions. Sarah examined every inch of my face and didn't overly focus on just the T-zone. I was really impressed by how much she caught. She took her time and kept me informed just enough throughout so that I had an idea what was happening without ruining the relaxing vibe. My deep tissue massage was definitely deep! Ikuro (I forgot to write her name down so I might be getting it wrong here, but I think that's right or at least close) seemed sweet and unassuming at first until she started to work the daylights out of my legs and shoulders. My goodness that woman found knots in muscles I didn't know existed. I loved it! I can take plenty of pressure and pain when it comes to massage and she was not afraid to go in. My consultation was quick but I still felt heard. She remained the professional though and did her work her way and I reaped the benefits, especially in my shoulder and calves. It was an hour of much needed relief. While there may not be many frills in between arriving and departing, the services are fantastic and top notch. Truthfully, it made me realize how much I don't care about all those frills at other spas because I was so happy to maximize the amount of time I was spending in the bed getting my skin and muscles worked on. Priorities! I will most certainly be back to Moonflower. And I've already started passing the name along to friends and family looking for a new spa. read more

My boyfriend booked a 3-hour spa appointment for me here as a birthday present, and it was hands down the best spa experience I have ever had. He had done a lot of research, and chose Moonflower because it's a Japanese spa. I grew up in Japan, and although I have had a couple of spa treatments there, nothing compares to the pampering I got at Moonflower. Even though you're in the middle of NYC the atmosphere in Moonflower is completely tranquil. I have since recommended it to many friends, and I'm looking forward to returning again myself before too long. read more

Hands down the best facial i've ever had and Yuko gets all the credit! I do my best to take care of skin. Lets face it, you cant fake good skin. I really dont want to see my 40 year old self on an episode of "Real Housewives of Queens" with my face all botched up. To avoid doing that to myself, I try to get a facial every other month. Thank you yelpers for your great reviews. I booked a Glow facial (75minutes) with Yuko. She was AMAZING! Heres how it went down I walked in and immediately thought "ah, this is what heaven looks like" Clean, beautifully decorated, soft music playing in the background, just perfect. The hallway leading to the room had candles all over the floor, it was really nice. I laid down in the bed and Yuko went to work.... -cleaned off all the garbage on my skin -masaged my face, shoulders, chest, neck-almost fell asleep -Steam machine and enzyme peel -Extractions-It did hurt but that was only because I told her I have a really high pain tolerance (so not true) -Wiped my face with a disinfectant spray -Masage with cream -Mask-left it on for 10 minutes -Sunscreen and I was good to go The facial lasted over an hour and half. Sooooo relaxing. My skin looks INCREDIBLE. Its literally glowing. If my boyfriend noticed a difference then you know the facials great. Small space but very pleasant and my facial made a visible difference to my skin at least for the following few days -- it was glowing and well hydrated... esthetician used generous amounts of quality ingredients and serums, completely nourishing my near "dead" skin.... this visit reminded me to give myself a frequent and regular reward for my hard work :) I am now going to get a facial at least once a month no matter how busy I am. read more

Japanese attitude and hospitality never ceases to amaze me. After my trip to Japan a year ago, I have vowed to always go Japanese whenever I can, and I'm so happy to have found Moonflower Spa. Not only are the prices reasonable, but the service is 5 stars. Moonflower Spa is located on the 3rd floor of what I like to call Little Tokyo in Midtown. 41st street has quite a number of Japanese retail stores; there is also a Japanese travel agency located here where I bought my JR Passes for my trip. You take a small elevator up and the door opens to a warm inviting space. There is no loud voices, no loud music and soft muted colors. I was asked to fill out a short form about myself prior to my facial and when Yuko came out to escort me to the room, I barely heard her come up to me! The room is quite small but you're not doing aerobics in there anyways; just lying down on the table to get pampered. We spoke briefly about my skin and my concerns and she went to work, describing everything in a soft, low voice. I chose the C & Sea Facial, which consisted of vitamin C and seaweed masks. I also received a mini massage while the steam opened up my pores and Yuko was extremely gentle. She asked if I'd like extractions done, to which I hesitated and she promised that at any sign of discomfort she'll gladly stop. I've had extractions done before and they have NEVER been this gentle EVER. Yuko made me feel completely comfortable and it was then that I knew I would never get a facial anywhere else again. During checkout, I was standing behind someone else also checking out. Yuko quickly told me that I could sit down to wait, and she brought the bill over to me. After seeing so many positive reviews about the facials here I decided to get a deep cleansing facial from them for my birthday back in April and was deeply disappointed. I've had plenty of facials in my life and my skin is not great so I'm used to long painful extractions during them, but the woman who did mine was just awful. It wasn't the pain that got me but the fact that she was paying so much attention to areas of my face where I'm pretty sure I've never seen a blackhead in my life on instead of my huge problem areas and completely missed so so so so so many clogged pores it felt like I just walked into the place, handed them a bunch of money, and left. Complete waste and definitely don't plan on ever coming back here. I'm sure there are plenty of other places in the city who can do a much better job of treating my problem skin. I don't understand all these 5 stars. I booked a deep-cleansing facial based on yelp's reviews and was disappointed. Yes, everybody is very nice and the place is clean and cute. Maybe I was expecting something else but the person spent very little time doing the actual facial and I was left alone in the room for quite some time. I dozed off for a little bit and when I woke, the facial was done. The extractions took maybe 3-4 minutes and seemed like she missed a lot. I expected a lot based on the reviews but walked away really disappointed. read more
