Hedging my bets here. Original estimate for "economy brake job" was $125 plus rotors for another $60-70. Then they came back at around $550 but found out that was for premium. Got them back down and the rotors still have some life apparently. They kept saying the brakes should last 8-12 months. A little concerned with that lifespan but we shall see. After reading Kelly's review I feel cheated. I didn't get a cute box of candy. My car smelled like grease after I picked it up. And no voucher for an oil change which would have made me happy after I paid my fat bill. On the other hand I did get a new transmission and other badly needed treatment for my aging car. I have had a great experience at Moonlight Motors. I had a brake warning light coming on and brought it in. They couldn't find anything wrong with the brakes and the computer had not registered what the problem was. I brought the car back after a couple of weeks and fortunately the problem registered in the car's computer and they were able to find the problem. They didn't even charge me for their time! I came home today and UPS had delivered a tin of cookies and a nice thank you card from Marty and Adam. Now that's what I call customer service! read more

Seem like nice people, but prices are very high. Quoted me $650 for a radiator, which means $550 in labor, since the part is ~ $100. Takes 1 hour to do a radiator. You do the math. Not saying they don't do good work, but am saying their prices are ridiculously high. read more

Highly recommended. I have a 97 Toyota Rav4 with almost 200K miles and numerous fluid leaks. Brought it to Moonlight Motors where I have had excellent service before. They recommended a very conservative approach which means in this case not spending many hundreds even thousands of bucks trying to patch up all the leaks, but letting them go and refilling the fluids a few times a year. Very sensible considering the cars' age and condition. Intergrity over greed. An honest auto repair shop where the customer really does come first. read more

I couldn't recommend this shop more highly. My family and I moved to San Diego 4 years ago from Denver and were fortunate to learn about Moonlight from a friend. Since then, they've serviced 3 of our cars many times (minivan, SUV and sedan), and not once has our experience been less than stellar. They go out of their way to tell you when something doesn't need to be repaired, and have saved us money in the process. Last week, I took my Audi A6 in for a 20K service, and the bill was $300 less than what the Audi dealer quoted me (and less than Moonlight originally estimated). I drive a lot for work, so fixing my car asap was very important for me. So I took it to moonlight right down the street. They were very friendly, and for the diagnostic part they send you a text message with a checklist and photos of each part. Quick and easy to work with. It really seems like a great place... If you don't need to worry about cost. However, I needed my brakes changed and it was going to be over $300 for the front brake pads and $550 for the rear rotors and brake pads. I knew this was too much so I declined the front, and accepted the rear since I needed my car to drive asap. I am not sure if all places up charge for parts but I looked up the retail of the brake pads and rotors they gave me using their serial number and the brake pad set was $47 at autozone as well as o'reillys but I was charged $70 (not including labor). The brake rotor was $50 at autozone and I was charged $80 for each. Almost $100 dollars more for the parts.. I understand most places mark them up, but this just seems excessive. Pretty bummed! The labor charge also stayed the same after canceling the front brake work, $300 dollars. I wanted to be wrong about all this, but I called my friend who owns a popular auto shop up north and he told me I was overcharged. read more

The NAPA parts store referred me to Moonlight Motors in Encinitas to replace the water pump in our 2005 Trailblazer. Owner Marty Smith was very accommodating and his mechanic did the job quickly. Marty recommended a cooling system flush and refill with new coolant. The end result is the A/C system cools better now. It happened close to home and I had an appointment to get to. So I walked home to get wife's car. Then went to my appointment. When I finished my appointment I called Moonlight Motors. Marty sent two guys to meet me where I had abandon the truck. They got it going and took it back to the shop. The problem was fix. I took in my '97 Landcruiser to have a power window actuator replaced. I explained to Adam that I needed to minimize the amount of time my vehicle was in the shop. He arranged an appointment for first in the morning thing the following week. The technician was very experienced with power windows, and had the work done in about an hour. He also (without charge) fixed some frayed speaker wires while he was in there and the front speakers live again! In an age when getting your car repaired can be very stressful, Its good to know there is shop out there that has experienced, professional technicians, is fair with their pricing, and treats you like you've been going there for years. I was using another Encinitas based auto repair shop for decades. At a friend's recommendation I scheduled a brake inspection and was prepared to pay a steep price. Instead, Marty said the 1.5 hours brake inspection was free! Unbelievable! The best and most shocking surprise was that the brake inspection turned out to be a bumper to bumper comprehensive and total vehicle inspection to include everything I could think of, and more! Even a safety inspection! Marty's professional technicians found problems I didn't even know existed! With the repair estimate I received a text message inspection file that provided; simple to understand terms recommending my vehicle's needs, photos of parts requiring attention/replacement, and even videos when necessary to help me understand the need for repair! Who does that?! If you're not already one of Marty's customers you should be! Save money, feel confident knowing you're properly cared for without being oversold! Moonlight Motors, just go there! Wow, I am surprised the owner decided to post a review in response to my review instead of contacting me personally... Someone really interested in keeping customers and providing good customer service would have been more courteous. I don't think the owner read my review quite right and actually just proved my point with his response. I was mainly commenting on the lack of common courtesy that I received. I don't know where he learned to do business, but you never tell a customer that they have (mental) issues beyond repair. Apparently, I need to reiterate my points again because people misinterpret what I am saying. First off, a PHONE CALL would have been nice to let me know that my car was not ready, instead of me finding a ride down there after being told to pick it up and then finding out when I get there that I couldn't pick it up yet. I am not complaining about the time it took to repair, just that a courtesy call was never made. Also, my car was finished and I waited for half an hour (which I could've exaggerated to an hour) after I paid because the mechanics were too lazy to lift the car blocking it and the guy at the register was too busy flirting. I never said anything about a "have a nice day" "satement" either... I said that I didn't say anything to the guy who brought out my car so he RUDELY and SARCASTICALLY said, "you're welcome." What he should have said is "thank you for waiting." Apparently, people who work at this place think that they are entitled to treat customers like crap and haven't stopped to consider that it might be a good idea to treat customers with more respect if they want to keep them. It's a sad thing because my car needs some work done. Any recommendations??? read more

Don't even know why I'm giving 2 stars. I guess the guy seemed nice through the openbay app. I had an appointment at 10 and I understand I was 7 minutes late but no one was there to greet me at the desk. I was standing there and I know the one mechanic saw me walk up. I then proceeded to stand there for a few minutes and had to go out and ask him if someone was there to help me. Then he said oh oh yea he's doing a test drive. I waited about another 10 minutes and thought it was horrible customer service that no one was even there to greet customers. I walked out to my car and called openbay and let them know what was going on and that it was sketchy and I wanted to cancel my appointment. I will not be returning there. Bad first experience with openbay. So I drove 30 miles for no reason and had to drive all the way down 23 miles to poway to get my car worked on. Not what I wanted to do on my day of. read more

My wife and I both have been taking our cars to Moonlight for a few years now. I thought of them in high regards before today, but they found a way to raise the bar. I had them do an oil change a month ago, and the oil filter gasket busted leaking oil everywhere and making the car undriveable. I gather this is a pretty rare occurrance, and I don't know if it was the shop's fault, but they took care of all of the clean up and repair free of charge. I didn't expect nor ask for that, and they could have easily done otherwise. Honest mechanics aren't hard to find if you know where to look! read more

Brought my car in for a CV joint boot repair. They replaced my half axle then never test drove the vehicle. After I lot of scary grinding whining noises I had to bring it back for another half day of adjustments. They apologized and were nice about it, but they lost my trust.
