Smooth Beauty Studio is located in the Connie Gayle Beauty Centre right on the corner of Beretania and McCully opposite the Shell gas station. Easy to find, lots of parking, and sitting in a convenient part of town. If one judged the interior by the way the outside looked, you'd see women fleeing the scene. The blacked out tint and dated wooden building reminds me of an adult toy store. But once you muster up the courage to walk in, everything changes. The Beauty Centre is bright and clean, buzzing with conversation between the hairstylists and customers. White lights enhance the marble floors. Soft blue tones dance with silver metallics that make the place feel bigger than it really is. As I stopped at the reception desk, Lynn had already pegged me as her next client and we hit it off right then and there! She led me into her studio space that is shared amongst the other aestheticians, all working independently from each other. Lynn was professional and comforting, asking the basic questions like "Have you waxed before?" and "When was your last waxing?" She even mentioned that it was important to keep hydrated the couple days before to help the hair removal process. The wax she used was the most gentle I've ever experienced. Brazilians are painful no matter what, but it makes a HUGE difference when the wax grabs the hair properly and the professional removes it cleanly. She told me to inhale, then ripped at the exhale. What a great tip! Throughout the waxing, she spoke to me about her family of five children who have all grown up, her nice husband Pat, and how she used to run her business from home until it got a bit too busy. When I was taken to the back the bed they wanted me to lay on was dirty with visible dirt and a paper that only covered 2/3 of the bed. As a cosmetologist myself, if something as simple as the being bed is dirty, I would absolutely NOT trust that the wax is clean as well. Since I was getting a Brazilian I do not trust that they are not putting double dipped wax on my kitty, avoid if looking for a place. She said that all the products are made of natural ingredients and that the process of sugaring was less painful than waxing. Supposedly the hair grows back lighter and eventually with some maintenance, it doesn't grow back at all! Also, the TV is up high so you can take your mind off of the task at hand. The comfortable spa table is prepped with a little steamer to get your face ready for treatment. The HydraFacial machine was explained to me. She also stated that if the process felt uncomfortable, I could alert her to adjust the pressure. The procedure helped to clean, exfoliate, and remove impurities from my skin. She then applied a serum of antioxidants, peptides, and hyaluronic acid. The final application was sunscreen. While the untrained eye, probably couldn't SEE a difference after the HydraFacial, I could certainly FEEL the difference. Clean, fresh, and super rejuvenated! As a follow up, I came in for the Scultural Face Lift with Buccal Massage. This included lymphatic drainage (behind your ears) and microcirculation of my shoulders, neck, and jaw area. If you've never had a massage inside your mouth, try it! This helps to relax jaw muscles and many TMJ patients use this. Honey, you are worth it! Whether a special occasion or just because. Gyoungsil works out of a small, functional room inside LEEKAJA Hair Bis, the hair salon in the Madang plaza on Wilshire and Western. I've gone to her (and her old partner Lucy, per my previous review) a few times over the years, in two or three different spots, but she seems to have settled here, or has been here, in any case, since before COVID. It's a good spot, and easy to access for customers. The plaza has plentiful garage parking, and I think it's usually free with validation. The entrance is a little confusing, though. I believe it's on Manhattan, and it might only have signs for H Mart. My eyebrows are naturally thin and light, so without significant help, I kind of might as well not have them. Microblading has been a blessing since I first started getting it done in my twenties, and Gyoungsil is my preferred practitioner. I don't know enough about eyebrows to tell her what to do, but every time, she manages to make my brows look just the way I want. She's also great at making the process comfortable and relatively painless, which is not nothing when you're dealing with topical numbing cream and innumerable cuts from a small knife. I probably wouldn't do this if it were a once-a-month thing--it costs $300 before tip (payable through VenMo) and again, it involves a knife on your face--but microblading makes my eyebrows look good for well over a year (and last time, I didn't even bother with the touch-up a month later). I'm grateful that this service exists, and unless my brows stop being sad and wispy, I will remain a loyal Beautyholic customer.
