What a blessing it is to get an amazing massage. My boyfriend and I stayed at the Westin Desert Willow villas and I got us our first couples massage as a gift. You never know what you're going to get when you hit a new town and want (or painfully *need*) a good massage. If you're someone who believes that getting a regular massage is important for your health, you probably have a great massuese at home. But what to do when you travel? If you're in a fancy hotel that has a spa, you can easily pay over $200/hour, and still not get a massage that's as good as the one in your home town for half that. I don't often stay in fancy hotels with spas, but I was on this occasion. A 1-hour, in the spa (*not* in your room, of course), with whoever you're randomly paired with costs exactly $222.00 out the door, tip and resort taxes all added. That's CRAZY! Or if it's not crazy, then it should be the BEST, most transformational massage you've ever had in your life, right? But that rarely happens. Usually they're just "okay" and somewhat "meh," which is disappointing when you're paying literally $3.70 a minute! So I usually dig through Yelp in hopes of finding a good masseuse who can actually come and work on my kinks in my hotel room at a more reasonable rate. This time in Palm Desert, I spent about an hour reading reviews, and looking at websites to find someone truly good who could come to my hotel room for bodywork. Like most of us, I'd gone without a massage during the pandemic for well over a year, so I really needed one. If that wasn't enough at stake, I had surgery on my left knee 5 months prior and am still doing PT twice a week. Learning how to walk again has now thrown out the RIGHT side of my upper and lower body. But wait, there's more. On top of that, I got into a pool here and was trying some extremely gentle rehab swimming and my hamstring locked painfully after about 10 minutes. It was the take-your-breath-away kind of cramp. I had to hold my left leg in position for 5 minutes before it would let go and allow me to get out of the pool. I'm a mess, I tell ya. More than usual. So I found 5-6 highly rated listings and texted them to see who could get to me that afternoon. Some I never heard back from, 3 said they were booked solid for the next three days, and one, Moonstone Valorie said she could be there at 4:30 *same* day for a 90 minute massage. So I said "YES" and booked her with no idea what I was getting. As you might imagine from my words above, a mediocre massage is not better than none at all. But I had no choice. My hamstring needed immediate attention so I rolled the dice. Valorie arrived 5 minutes early with a table, a bag and a large suitcase. She came prepared! She set up the table as I explained my detailed and oddly specific list of war wounds. I slipped under the sheet while she washed up in the loo. She had already unpacked a small briefcase of essential oils. This made me very happy. I snuggled my face down into the softest face cradle I think I've ever felt and told her so when she emerged from the bathroom. She said she'd found a way to add padding or something to it and then asked about my favorite scents. I said I liked lavender, eucalyptus oil and maybe teatree oil since lying face down usually make my nose fairly stuffy. Before I knew it, I was breathing those through the cradle and my whole being just melted into the table. And then she began. It's those first few minutes when you can tell what the quality of the masseuse will be. I tried not to hold my breath. 5 minutes in, I realized she had the gift. She knew what she was doing. I asked her if she had time to do 2 hours (now that I knew how good she was) and she said "Sure." I was happy guy and surrendered to the therapy. The following 2 hours were simply perfect. I asked her to work deep and welcomed the intensity (and some pain) because I knew I'd feel so much better later in the day. She was just fantastic. Intuitive, peaceful, kind and highly skilled. I never wanted it to end. When it came time to pay I asked if she was a sole proprietor of Moonstone and she said she was. It's extremely rare for me to tip the owner of a business, but I was just so happy to have found the deep tissue therapy I needed, I tipped. If you're looking for truly excellent highly therapeutic bodywork from someone who has the gift, Valorie is the one. I'll be back in Palm Desert in December and know who I'm going to call. read more
