Great place for BBQ in New Bern, and really in the whole area. We came during the late lunch time and it was still quite busy, but the staff was friendly and the food came out quick. Pork sandwich was fantastic, as was the sauce - a good punch of vinegar evened out with nice spices. The slaw was fantastic as well. Hush puppies were very good. Fries (crinkle) were good but nothing fantastic. Prices are very fair for the quality of the food, and you get a ton of it. The restaurant is nothing fancy, but is kept clean. I was a little wary, given that Moore's advertises itself as Moore's "Olde Tyme" Barbecue, but found my way here on the old highway south from New Bern towards Jacksonville. While surrounded by newer car dealerships and fast food outlets, it's clear this is a longstanding business that has met the test of time. Ample portions of barbecue and sides assembled as you order at the counter. It's quite an operation back there. The line to order can get long but moves quickly. Take your food to tables across several rooms. Fresh, lightly dressed coleslaw and light, sweet hushpuppies. Well worth making the detour there if you're passing through New Bern. read more

First time here for work and I will be honest I'm a bbq snob. The pork was fantastic and prefect blend of Carolina vinegar and meat so it was subtle. The brisket was really tender and flavorful. The stew was very good. My only complaint is they put a a lot of heavy molasses based sauce on the brisket which should be left to the customer to do. I gather this barbecue place has a long local history which sadly was lost when the owner retired and sold out to some chain operator. The new ownership is clearly evident. Pulled pork was bland, fried chicken was fair but nothing to write home about and the coleslaw could've come right out of a can. The Brunswick stew was 98% potatoes. You eat off plastic plates with plastic utensils drink out of Styrofoam cups.Don't go out of your way for this mediocre food. read more

A really good local place for some ENC BBQ. I went off the path and got the soft shell crab and it was very good. If you like the local places and want to taste the region, this is a great spot to try. I am an Alabama gal, so I love the barbecue of my youth (Ken's in Tarrant AL and Sam's in Montgomery, AL and Greentop heading up toward Hackleburg). Now I have lived in eastern NC for 33 years. They need to change their name to smithfields, since they offer the same food selection, menu style, and even the flavor profile is the same. I was a huge Moores BBQ fan before they closed and came under new management. Now that they have reopened, it's a franchise smithfields look alike. My wife and I got two white chicken platters, one bbq and one baked. The BBQ sauce is no longer the same and tastes like they made Texas Pete hot sauce the main ingredient. The hush puppies, fries, potato salad, and Cole slaw are all different. And for $8.99 you get 2 sides, hush puppies, and 1 small piece of chicken. To me it's overpriced, under fed, and zero originality. The only thing they have going for them still is the Sweet tea. I never understood the draw to the old Moore's. In the few rare occasions where we decided to eat there (usually invited by my in-laws), it was always very mediocre. The seating was terrible and the sides came out of large pre-made food service containers. I think people were more drawn to it for the nostalgia of the place, and not for the taste of the food. People may try to argue about how good the BBQ was, but to my wife and I, it was lacking in flavor. In New Bern your options are pretty slim for BBQ. You were either a Moore's fan or a Smithfield's fan. We always preferred Smithfield's. Better food, better seating and better service. Tonight my wife and I decided to try the new Moore's after a long delayed hesitation, due to our feelings on the old one. We both had BBQ plates, mine with Brunswick stew and green beans, hers with baked beans and Brunswick stew. The sides were very good and the hushpuppies fresh and cooked well. The green beans didn't taste like they were straight out of a can, which is unusual for most restaurants. The BBQ was tasty with a good smoke flavor and a little bit of spice. It was adequately chopped and had no chunks of gristle or fat (or bone) like you can sometimes get with NC pork BBQ. The interior of the restaurant was very clean and the seating laid out nicely. The employees were all very friendly and accommodating. We both agreed that it was better than Smithfield's. Our sole complaint was that the sectioned plates had pretty small spaces for the sides, so it didn't feel like you got a good portion. We ordered a family dinner for 2-3. It's not a place we will come back to. Chicken was dry, asked for sweet tea got regular. Cole slaw is super sweet and pulled pork had nothing to put on it. Told them we didn't want hush puppies because of a gluten issue and they gave us two huge orders. Maybe it's what people are used to, but there weren't many people in the parking lot at 1:30. Saw a server go to others tables a few times but not ours till we were ready to leave. The server offered to switch out the tea for us but never came back to the table. This is our favorite bbq place. The bbq is tops. Chicken not so much. I've had it twice both times overcooked and very dry with way too much breading. Hubby always gets the flounder/ shrimp plate. The shrimp are great, the flounder is also. I also love the baked beans as they add a bit of bbq mixed in. Last night we had a surprise. We were settled in waiting for our food as everyone around kept getting theirs. We asked the server to check on ours. Somehow it had been overlooked. They offered full refund because of it. This is it! This is the real thing. Two Eastern North Carolina barbecue places stand head and shoulders above the rest, Moore's and Chap's (if that's still around?) then all the rest of the wannabe's like Kings and Wilbur's kind of fall in somewhere behind there. Everything here is perfect. The pulled pork barbecue is so juicy, the sweet tea is sugary and the collards and cole slaw are just perfect. I always got the barbecue plate. Delicious takeout for a family event -- fried chicken, chopped pork, sides, hush puppies, and great tea. Green beans and Brunswick stew were standouts. Perfectly prepared and packaged, great staff helped get it into the car, they provided everything down to cups and plates, and the generous portions gave us plenty of leftovers. I wasn't in the building long but it is large and easy to navigate. A great experience that left everyone in our group happy and the value and convenience made me even happier.
