If you think the best barbecue is always found in the worst part of town, in a place with bars on the windows and just enough grease on the table to write your initials, then this is probably as close as anything you're going to find outside East St. Louis. What this is, is The Whistling Pig which, as the menu says is "just south of Downtown Pine Mountain, Georgia." Downtown Pine Mountain? Never mind, where is Pine Mountain, Georgia? A lot south of Atlanta and just outside the front door of Callaway Gardens. As someone who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of the perfect barbecue (read 125+ Yelp reviews covering barbecue joints from New York City to San Diego), this is the real deal with a couple of nits to pick. Let's start first with the meat: The Whistling Pig (or, as folks there call it, "The Pig") is known, very well known, for their pulled pork. This ramshackle hole in the wall great barbecue joint has a world class pulled pork sandwich piled fairly high on a sauce soaked bun. It comes with skinny hand cut fries, cooked to order, (the way they're supposed to be... the crinkly ones are almost always frozen some far away lace and then quickly deep fried or, worse, polished off in an oven before they make it onto your plate). Now here's a negative: Ribs. Don't know how good they are, because they only cook and sell them on Friday and Saturdays. And, as you'd expect, they're closed on Sunday. Another other beef: Beef. They don't have brisket the way most barbecue joints do; they have very thin sliced beef. Dry, and from all appearances, certainly not brisket. Maybe because brisket takes 12 to 14 hours to barbecue right. Whatever the reason, the Brown Shoe Gourmet had a beef with the beef and ended up going straight for the pulled pork sandwich. The final beef? They close at three, so late lunchers and those who just happen to drive by after 3 are out of luck and miss some good 'cue. They also offer hamburgers, Buffalo chicken, hot dogs, and country fried steak fingers. No sure why, but they do. And their Brunswick Stew is good, not quite up the standard sent years ago by Harold's (RIP) near the prison in Atlanta, but still real good. Sauces? You want to know about sauces? The house sauce is a combination tomato and vinegar; good but not as good as if it were one or the other. Sides include pork rinds (which you ought to include) three different kind of beans starting with string and ending with pinto, fried green tomatoes, some really good potato salad and the fresh, hand cut French fries. Get your drink at the dispenser and nobody seems to care if you get refills. Still hungry? You may also want to try their homemade desserts; their buttermilk pie, long thought to be extinct is as good as most any dessert you'd find most anywhere. The ordering line starts almost at the door most days. The woman taking the orders when we invaded had a tee shirt on that said "Southern Girl" and she certainly was a great example of that. The service was fairly quick and the folks friendly. They sell their tee-shirts for $12 (as compared to the record high $23 charged by Scott's Whole Hog in Atlanta) and how can you not at that price? For someone who has spent a lifetime in search of the perfect barbecue, this isn't it... but it's darn close and their pulled pork sandwich makes it work finding "just South of downtown Pine Mountain, Georgia." Four Stars. Five stars when ribs are available during the week and when they add real brisket. read more

All I can say is I wish I was going to be here another day because if everything else is a good as what I had.....Well, I bet it's the first place I stop if I come back to Pine Mountain. It sure works for me and if this part of town seems threatening or something to folks, they sure don't want to go to some of the BBQ joints in the big A area. Extremely close to Callaway Gardens, Moore's offers a great variety of southern BBQ and other lunch staples (burgers and chicken). I had the rib plate with potato salad, hot and sweet beans, and fried green tomatoes. All of the above were good. My wife had a pulled pork sandwhich that was also great. TOURISTS BEWARE The food here is actually pretty good. . And there aren't many choices around, it's a small town. That being said our concern was safety. It's is a small older place packed at lunchtime today when we stopped in on our way back to our hotel. It's not the most spotless place anyone has ever eaten at, but what caught us off guard was the owners wife. Another group of tourist were behind us and she delivered their food with NO mask and then preceded to tell them how "my husband tells me I have to wear a mask, but I refuse. I'll just shut the place down or go home". Luckily our food was delivered by a waitress wearing a mask. She then went on to tell the same group how the health department wants all employees to take a $350 class, which she also hasn't done nor plans on doing for the whole staff because she said it's a waste of money and "common sense stuff" we thought it was common sense and health sept regulations for all servers to be wearing a mask, but I guess not. Makes me really wonder what the kitchen looks like. We finished as quick as we could and left. read more

Yum, yum gimme some. There's a reason this is the highest rated Pine Mountain restaurant on Tripadvisor. And it's not just because there are only a handful of restaurants. It's a hole in the wall and they close early but there food is sooo good. The chicken is a bit dry but the sauce selection makes it tasty. I mixed the spicy and the sweet. The sides are to die for, especially the fried green tomatoes. The prices are cheap compared to Atlanta. There are a few BBQ joints in the area but the Pig's food was so good, we tried to eat there two days in a row. But then I would've had to walk home to burn off all those extra calories. We had brunch here on our last full day in the area. My husband and I both ordered the rib plate that came with fries and slaw. The ribs were good with a good smoky flavor but I wish they had been cooked a wee bit longer. But I guess that's really just a preference. The fries looked like they were going to be nasty, like they had been cooked in old oil but I was wrong! They were sweet and flavorful, don't know how they achieved that color and retained the fresh flavor but I luved them! The slaw was creamy but not overly mayonnaisy. I just made up that word. The decor is lacking and everything looked like it needed a bath. But if all your interest in is great ribs, you will enjoy it here! read more

You name it, they've got it! On your way out, grab some big bags of pork skins (rinds, however you call them) in regular, salt ' vinegar, hot bbq or sweet bbq flavors. I take bags to work lots of times and my fellow nurses are always clamoring for more!
