No way a chain makes that good of burger and hand cut fries. Madison has tons of great burgers but you gotta put Mooyah on your list. In and out in 15 minutes w 6 guys two hours before kickoff! Outstanding

Honestly thought this place was super solid. I guess it's a chain burger so you kind of know what you are getting fast food wise, but the burger, fries, and shake were all really solid. Was in Madison for a Sports event, and needed to grab a quick lunch in the middle of the day walking distance from UW, and it was super solid. Food came out relatively fast and workers seemed polite. There was plenty of seating and it was well lit and clean inside. Would definitely eat here again.

Love this spot! I've been a handful of times when in Madison and the burgers are delicious! The service is typical what you'd expect at a fast food-esque restaurant, fast and workers are pretty chill. The food is definitely higher quality and better than your typical fast food place. I would compare it to a five guys, but I think Mooyah is better!

    Shake to head ratio

Food had small portions for cost, but it was very fresh and filling. The shake we bought was 12oz at most and it was over $5. The the burgers alone were $7.50 each The service was good, workers were nice. Clean and well kept store! I'm conclusion, very good, just SUPER overpriced

This place is essentially a more expensive version of Five Guys. The same burger combo that would have run me about $10 at Five Guys was almost $14 here. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with the food, but certainly there is nothing here that grabs your attention either. Except, of course, their inability to empty their garbage cans.

Nothing to write home about. Burgers were standard bar burgers but the fries were soggy and cold. Can't say that I'll be back.

Good burger but it was super greasy and the white bun was awful. There's better places to grab a burger.

The place is enormous, or at least it feels that way. The ceiling stretches overhead, the floor goes on forever, and there's no hostess stand in sight. No one is waiting to greet you. Instead, you're left to figure out the system yourself. Fortunately, the ceiling signs seem to know where you're going. Everything about the place says Chicago hot dog emporium. It isn't fancy, and it certainly isn't trying to be. No linen napkins, no mysterious foam, no server appearing with a dramatic explanation of the appetizer. Just laminated menus, stainless steel, bright signs, yellow mustard, and the reassuring promise of a hot dog piled high with enough toppings to require a little structural engineering. At the register, the cashier looks up with the blank, mildly haunted expression of someone who has been stationed there to process transactions, not thoughts. You ask a question. They stare. Not rudely. Not helpfully. Just a long, silent look that suggests your question has been received but will not be processed at this time. Your better off just ordering your food and hoping for the best. They do serve a crispy fried chicken sandwich with a sauce so aggressively spicy it feels less like a condiment and more like a personal attack. The first bite is delicious. The second begins the paralysis of your taste buds. By the third, you're realizing that requesting the sauce on the side was a good move. In hindsight, I probably should have done my homework and ordered the hot dog--the thing this place is actually famous for. Instead, I saw "spicy chicken sandwich" and made the classic mistake of assuming I knew better than a restaurant built around one very specific food.

Bags are lined up with food in them while they wait for fries or other order additions. This is stupid! They need about 5 more people working to fill these orders so the food is hot. Let down with this location.

It's all about the sauce…read more Well, maybe the sauce and the authenticity. Okay. It's the sauce, the authenticity, and the old Madison charm. The burger is merely a vehicle. The suds from the pint of Spotted Cow prepare the palate for another bite. Here's the thing. I ended up at The Plaza Tavern because it was the only place in Madison that Jane & Michael Stern included in their classic book Roadfood. Yes, I'm here right now on Yelp. But I'm trying to live my best analog life. Rarely have the Sterns led me astray. But in the listing for the Plaza Tavern they describe the Plaza sauce as "thinner than ketchup and its texture reminded us of some eastern North Carolina barbecue sauce, although it doesn't have the vinegar tang. It's spicy but not even three-alarm hot, and in addition to infusing the meat with flavor, it gets deeply imprinted into the tawny bun." This is entirely false. There are lengthy internet posts on what folks guess is in this secret recipe. But it's more like a thicker version of ranch dressing than anything resembling bbq sauce. What the Stern's got correct is that the sauce makes everything great. I got an additional side of the sauce to slather over my side of fried mushrooms. Hey, ya gotta eat some vegetables. On my visit, the tavern was celebrating the one year anniversary under new ownership. My hunch is they haven't changed a thing. Although maybe the pinball machines are a newer addition? I dig pinball, beer, burgers, creamy sauces, and old places that seem stuck in a bygone era. I know these places are fixed in time. They both can't and shouldn't change. I just can't help but wish the beef of the burger was a little bit better. That said, I deeply appreciate the Plaza for keeping it real. Everyone should experience this place. Sit at the bar. Order simply. Put the phone down. Talk to stranger. Have a beer. And enjoy some of the basic comforts of life.
