Great experience on a day I needed it! Got the Mediterranean salad and boy did it hit the spot. Fresh veggies and the balsamic dressing was just right. Went a bit early for lunch (11:30) and while they weren't busy, things were a little slow - staff were busy making sandwiches for call in/take out I suspect. Wish I would have gotten the name of the staffer who not only took my order but stepped up to finish it when another staff got called away. I love potbelly's , very disappointed they forgot the chicken for the avocado wrap . I told them to add hot peppers and it looks like that's all they put on with the toppings. I even left a 15% tip. Just picked up my order from potbelly. I am a frequent customer at this location and this was the first solid food I have eaten since being sick. That being said, I was very disappointed to see that my Italian was missing every single meat that it was supposed to some with and instead only had turkey, which an Italian doesn't have. I will say that this place has the largest side salad that I have seen for a fast food joint. The rewards program is superb, giving the ability for free entrees frequently. Potbelly makes one go my favorite subs, they're perfectly toasted and super tasty! They have options for everyone whether you're craving a hearty, meaty sub or a lighter veggie option on a flatbread. I love their topping options and their shakes are also very delicious. Nice vibe with lots of seating inside. I've only been to this location once, but I docked one star because the place wasn't very busy at all but the service was extremely slow and my sandwich was put through the toaster twice because they forgot my cheese the first time. I was really in the mood for soup and salad. Like, REALLY in the mood for it. I searched around on Yelp, and my husband and I probably walked a couple miles checking out different places menus and vibes. I'm usually not this picky, I swear! But this particular day I wanted soup and salad and a casual vibe. Potbelly's it was! I had the Mediterranean Salad with a bowl of tomato soup, and my husband had an Italian sandwich with a cup of chili. He definitely won the food competition of who made the better order. My salad was fresh and the Potbelly vinaigrette was really good. But overall, the salad was just fine. His sandwich was really tasty and nicely toasted. I enjoyed my tomato soup, which was pretty basic. Again, his choice of chili was better! We ended up sharing. :) I liked the casual vibe and the cute painted tables. The staff were all really friendly and helpful. I'm not sure I would seek out Potbelly's again, but if I were in the area and in the mood for a meal that I could pretend was healthy, I would return. read more

Cool sandwich shop not too far from campus on state. I had the big roast beef and was pretty satisfied with the food quality. The bread was good, but didn't really stand out. I ordered it with hot peppers which were fairly spicy but what I was hoping for. A few main drawbacks about this place that keep it at three stars were the line, menu, and price. We came at lunch and there were only two employees so it took a while. The menu wasn't the longest, and the font was very small so it could be hard to read for some people. Lastly, the price wasn't too high but seemed a little expensive for a sandwich lunch. Honestly, I really enjoyed the food but the experience could have been better. Edit** Came back a second time and was thoroughly unimpressed. The place smelled, service was slow, I ordered a "big" and got a regular, and there was hardly any meat on the sandwich. It is 2022 and "Do you want to go to Potbelly?" might be the sexiest thing you can say to someone. Me and my best friend (who is also a "Pothead" and stays in the loop on his potbelly perks app) go on lunch & dinner dates there at least once per week. I always get the pick 2 (garden vegetable soup & the Mediterranean with no chicken). Sometimes I'll get a pickle too and it is just like having another little treat to look forward to after my main meal. Not to mention they are massive & also delicious. It tastes as if there are employees growing, picking, & pickling fresh cucumbers in the back. Additionally, I don't usually run into people I know here which can be so great for my mental health. This is a top tier sub shop, and you wouldn't be able to tell it's a chain based on the UW themed ambiance and immaculate customer service that this location provides. I have nothing but fond memories to reflect on when I think of this particular Potbelly location. I also believe it is one of the most efficient, reliable, convenient, and tasty chain sub shops in Madison and I will take this to my grave! Consider me a Pothead for life. read more

I've walked by this Potbelly location about a million times, and today I finally decided to try it out. I was hesitant because I've always been a Subway person, and I don't usually like my sub sandwiches toasted (Potbelly toasts all of their subs). Anyways, the restaurant itself was pretty nice and was unlike any other sub shop I've been in. It kind of reminded me of a coffee shop. Their menu is distributed on the walls in a couple different places, but I already knew what I wanted to get because I had looked at their menu online. I got an original chicken club sandwich with lettuce and tomato, a cup of mac and cheese, and a cup of chili. The service was quick but somewhat inattentive. When I was checking out the cashier barely made eye contact with me, and never gave me my receipt. Aside from that though, my experience was satisfactory. As for the food itself, I was pretty pleased. The sandwich was served nice and warm, and the cheese was fully melted. I think their was a good ratio of meat, cheese, and toppings, and the flavors all tasted very fresh. The bread was kind of thin and crumbly, definitely a lot different than the fluffy thick bread I'm used to at Subway, but it didn't bother me too much. The mac and cheese wasn't my favorite because the noodles were extremely soft, but the chili was really good and both were served hot. I think $9 is a bit expensive for a 6-7in sub, but they did seem to have quality ingredients so it is what it is. I didn't try any of their shakes today but I've heard they're pretty good so I'll probably be back to try those at some point! read more

We'll get this out of the way, I like Potbelly's. I think the quality it notable, and I love soups - they are a food group to me - so the daily options are nice. I'd venture to say that if you go in to order, your experience is going to differ from your delivery experience, at least at this location. I moved down here years ago and, working on State St. at the time, Potbelly's was really close to me and I stopped in a lot more than I get around to doing so now - so I was pretty pumped to try their delivery service, once I realized I had the option. I have never had a correct order. Not once. And adding ingredients (even when you're upcharged for them, like extra meats, or cheeses) doesn't change that they just don't seem to read their order tickets. I'm not one to complain, but when my sandwich additions total $3.00 on top of the base sub, and delivery is $4.00, and then 15-20% for a tip, with a $10 minimum, it starts to add up, and makes it a little important to pay attention to what your customers are *paying for* when you're fulfilling that order. As stated in previous reviews, i've also encountered the issue they seem to have with either turn over or understaffing, because whether there's a delivery driver is really just a crapshoot most times. This isn't a problem specific to this location, I'd venture to say that the website could use some improvement (ie: when someone tries to order something, but you don't have a driver, it blocks the order instead of sending it through anyhow, etc..). Anyhow, if you're in the area and are looking for a spot (with a patio, which is a definite upside here) for a quick sandwich - the quality sure beats subway, but I wouldn't suggest delivery at allllllll. read more

This place is OK for a quick sandwich. I heard that Potbelly was a big deal here in the Midwest so I decided to give it a shot. It was OK, good service, decent sandwiches, but nothing to write home about. They have a nice patio that you can sit and enjoy your food on during the afternoon. A cute place to sit and chit chat with friends. I got a tuna flatbread sandwich and it was OK. It wasn't really good or bad. I was happy that they had a flatbread option to make it a bit healthier. But the tuna was very meh. I think I prefer other places more. I will however say that I like this place better than Subway. I also wanted to try the tomato soup and ordered it, and when I got home and opened it I realized it was actually potato and bacon soup. On a recent trip to Madison from San Francisco, a fellow ex-midwest friend asked me to bring him back some Potbellies peppers. He told me that you could buy them from the store and asked for the largest jar I could get. So walking into the store and saw jars of peppers for about $7, which is what I think my friend was asking for. But... then I saw these big plastic jugs of peppers sitting high on the shelves, so I asked if those were for sale too. They are. So I walked out with a gallon jug of peppers for about $20. The sandwiches are pretty good. The employees, one in particular, was so grouchy, so rude. We will not return just for that reason. There is no need, when a customer is pleasant, to bring whatever is going on in that person's life to the work place. Management should work with employees about their attitudes...even if there is an employee shortage. Your business will ultimately suffer if customers don't feel valued. read more

As I walked in on a dreary and rainy Thursday afternoon, my spirits were immediately uplifted as the soft music drifted over me. I was wondering who was the artist when I turned and saw that he was right there sitting on a stage playing and singing with his guitar. How great is that?! Ah, but we are here for the food--definitely a contender against any other sub place in Madison. Great, fresh & friendly service. I really like the oil they have for some of their sandwiches. And I love, love their hot peppers...I bought a whole bottle. A good place to stop for breakfast/lunch/dinner--and I would encourage you to dine in--anytime you are on State Street. Never had a bad experience here! The mushroom melt with avocado is my favorite sandwich, and I love the shakes. Keep an eye out for the birthday cake shake that comes around every once in a while! As others have mentioned, there are sometimes local musicians playing here, which is at least entertaining even if they're not your thing. I love Potbelly sandwiches. I absolutely hate this shop. For a year or so after I started going there, it seemed like everyone there was in a daze of some kind and couldn't make a sandwich right----that's a low f'ing bar. They have this line for pickup orders. It's something like "pre-order and skip the line." Eight times out of ten they don't have the sandwich ready by the time I get there and some dude is sitting in an empty restaurant telling me oh, sorry, didn't see the ticket. I even give them time, often about 5 to 10 minutes after the pickup time. So, essentially, I stand in line. I've abandoned my order a couple times because I had to get to work. Also, I've tried delivery and waited an hour after the projected delivery time. I waited nearly two hours after the order was placed before I called to cancel. The person was polite and cancelled the order but made nothing right. I then ordered from Jimmy Johns on State (across the street) and received my sandwich in 10 minutes! Those people are super heroes. I hope that the person in charge of the shops in this district looks closely at this location. It's probably the worst run place I have ever stupidly tried to interact with in my life. I think I have finally learned my lesson. The food is Potbelly. It's really good. Potbelly's is my favorite sandwich joint in terms of fast food. Deserve more than 3 stars but I am a tough critic. Really like the number of options you have for sandwiches. Of course, you have your classics , ham and cheese, turkey, roast beef, chicken salad, etc. but you also have different options such as mediterranean, grilled chicken, vegetarian, etc. Personally, I like their vegetarian sandwiches the best and I am a meat eater for sure! They really do not do anything special to them but the combination of the cheese, hot peppers and bread is wonderful to my pallets for some odd reason. You can get your sandwiches served toasted or just cold cuts. Lots of chip options and well as soup. Their cookies AWESOMELY huge and good when they are warm. State Street Potbelly's is my favorite locations. Plenty of seating. read more

Apparently, Potbelly is a thing in the Midwest/East Coast...that I did not know. Basically, Potbelly is high quality Quiznos...which, I never even go to to begin with because I'm common folk and I do Subway. I got the Italian, which was tasty but to be honest, I like Subway more (for the price, size, and customization - minus the bread smell) or fine, Jersey Mike's (for the quality of their cold cuts). Potbelly's portions are definitely on the smaller side. I feel like they should at least include a pickle then, no? Don't mind their free wifi though. read more

I'm partial to a variation on the meatball sandwich (though their signature sandwiches are very tasty and far more original) and sugar-cane-cola. Subway and Quizno's should tremble at the mere notion that Potbelly could invade the coasts. A great little sandwich place! I had the smoked ham(?) sandwich. It was delicious! Much better than Subway. Good prices too! Got the 6 inch sandwich, chips, and a cookie for about $7! Nice! The ice machine seemed to be a bit dirty that day though. There was something weird in my cup. Pretty unappetizing. But luckily I had just about finished eating before I went to take a drink!
