It was the end of our trip and, while we adore the cajun flavors all around us in NOLA, we were a little worn out and looking for something new. A friend suggested Mopho and while it was a bit of a drive outside of the city proper, it was definitely worth it! Fusion cuisine can be hit or miss, but Mopho's menu was a unique and incredible. Each dish not only looked gorgeous, but was a perfect blend of Asian flavors injected into Southern favorites. This shrimp and grits used red curry and coconut grits and it was simply amazing. I also very much enjoyed my boozy bubble tea! We had a bit of a quirky server, who seemed a bit distracted, but other than that our entire experience was stellar. After hearing many rave and great reviews, we decided it was time for a try. We began our meal with their popular lemongrass wings. I am not a wing person but that was some of the best wings I have ever had. My girlfriend ordered the pork belly bowl while I had their signature Mo Pho. The pork belly was crisp and savory but the addition of the fried pork skin was very odd. It felt off with having this added to the dish. The mo pho was disappointing as it felt like a combination of ramen with pho elements. The mixture of cheese, greens, poached eggs and minimum noodles was not a good mix for me. We concluded dinner with some of their "dirty bubbles." The coffee with Jamison and old fashioned were a great way to cap off the night. I wish I could give this place 4.5 stars!! We started with the papaya salad and coconut milk queso like we usually do at Mopho. Always a 10/10. The papaya salad had peaches in it this time which was a nice touch. We tried the chicken wings with the yellow coconut curry sauce for the first time and definitely would try that again. In terms of the buns, we had the P and J oyster, beef and shrimp with vindaloo sauce. We also tried the seasonal creole tomato bun which was very underwhelming. Was looking forward to my first NOLA meal out and was pretty disappointed with the 2 dishes I'd ordered. The presentation was nice but the substance was lacking. The fried green beans were slathered with a spicy mayo sauce and had crispy rice to offset the sogginess. The signature mopho nuoc mam chicken bowl (over coconut rice) was ok but could've used more actual chicken bites and more coconut flavor over the rice (didn't detect any). There was a decent amount of veggies and the nuoc mam caramel sauce was tasty. Lastly, the boba was rainbow colored (aka tasteless) and quite hard like it had been sitting in the cold smoothie temp for far too long. If you come from places where you've had real Vietnamese, I'd give this overpriced place a pass. While it IS fusion, it did not deliver a memorable experience. I was excited to visit MoPho due to a Facebook post they'd made advertising a new sandwich. This beast included homemade Vietnamese sausage on a po'mi, and looked heavenly. The post clearly stated it'd be available Sunday's only. So, to Mopho we went late Sunday afternoon / early evening. We arrived at 4:54p. The hostess was sweet, asked if we would prefer lunch or dinner menus. As we mulled it over - we seemed cartoonishly awkward, as we can be particularly indecisive - a man who appeared to be the manager rushed over and interrupted that it'd be a dinner menu only. No biggie. His brusqueness wasn't that big of a deal. We asked to sit outside, wanting to sit in the glorious fall weather. Upon being seated, we instantly noticed the fans blaring, making it pretty darn cold. I went to the hostess - a different girl this time - and asked about the feasibility of getting them turned off. I may as well have asked her the best route to take if one is trying to find Narnia. She choked over her words eventually scurrying away making out something about having to ask her manager. Went back outside to my table. The waiter comes and has no idea about the sandwich. I show him the post. He goes in to verify, then returns with the sad news: the sandwich would only be available in the daytime. Quite frankly, the response pissed me off. Nothing in the post mentioned anything to do with available times on Sunday. But it was fine. We would mull over the menu and find another option. As we waited, my bf went in to follow up with the fan issue. He approached a bartender, who took the question and walked around some but never came back. My bf also went to the hostess, and still nada. Server comes back out. The table next to us asks him about getting the fans turned off as they too were cold. He couldn't figure out an answer, audibly mulling over theoretical reasons why but he "wasn't really sure." We opted to move inside. At this point another server overhearing us talk mentions that it's because the Board of Health makes the restaurant keep them up due to food regulations, something about flies, yadda yadda. As we told her, we totally understood that. The frustration came from having four different people looking into it with no one knowing what in the hell was going on. She walked off and didn't seem to tell anyone about it. And on top of all of this, the manager made zero efforts to come talk to us, help us understand, anything. At this point we are obviously irritated. We realize no one has offered us a drink menu. We eventually got the Pinot Noir, which can best be described as forgettable. We ordered food. We got the vindaloo bites, which were flavorful and tasty. My bf got the Corn and Bacon Laksa -- he didn't like that the soup was lukewarm and that the crab craws and shrimp were cold. I had the MoPho, which I enjoyed - but I hated the presentation of the ingredients for the pho, seemingly thrown without care into a basket, as shown in the attached image. We are discussing this at our table, seated right behind the hostess stand where she and the manager were generally hovering the majority of the time we were in. There's no way he hadn't heard us mentioning our dissatisfaction with our experience. He comes over towards the end of the meal, and asks how the food is. He got no response at all from my bf, and a "I guess it's fine" from me. He smiles as though he just found out his best friend got engaged. "Well good I'm glad you're enjoying it!" I don't understand that interaction. Sure I could've told him everything that we'd experienced, but to be quite frank, he absolutely knew from standing where he'd been. There was zero effort to recover from serious services gaps that should've never happened in the first place. A good restaurant manager would've tried service recovery. He never did. Great beef pho after a night out! So many great flavors all in one bowl! Brisket and meatballs were superb.

Mopho is one of those places that we've been talking about going to forever, and for whatever reason just hadn't made it in. Well, finally we set out to correct this egregious wrong in our lives. Turns out, Mopho is amazing. We started with the roasted eggplant, melon, cucumber, and blue crab salad. This was such a crazy combination of flavors that we weren't sure how it would turn out, but it was incredible! Very light and tasty. We also ordered the glazed pork belly bowl, which was perfect. Pork belly can be hit or miss in many places, but they cooked it just right, and it was a ton of food. Finally, we split the "Hangover Part II" because...well, because it was just too crazy-sounding to pass up. Jalapeno cheddar cheese? What the pho?! I have seen some comments about their poached eggs being a bit runny (we ordered a second one as an extra) - this is indeed the case. A bit more than I would normally like, but it wasn't completely raw as I've seen mentioned. That aside, this was one of the most amazing bowls of pho noodles I've ever had - meatballs were great, the broth was perfect, and that melted cheese just permeates the broth and enhances the flavor. Whenever chefs try "fusion" dishes, they tend to be hits or misses, without much in between. That seems to be the case even more so when it comes to classic dishes like pho. Positives. Kitchen staff got the fundamentals down. I got the fried oysters, pork belly spring rolls and the beef pho. Oysters were fried just right. Batter was somewhere between tempura and typical southern batter, I could tell the oysters were of good qualities and not overcooked. Individual ingredients in the spring rolls were prepped with care. Pork belly was crispy and cooked just right, pickled vegetables were also on point. Matter of fact, the spring rolls (although I was a bit confused since the term spring roll originate from the Chinese dish of fried stuffed rolls) were the highlight of the meal as everything was tied together perfectly. It was like eating a pork belly bao with a bit of Vietnamese twist and the execution was fantastic as the fragrant mint and cilantro gave that refreshing finish. The beef pho had braised beef that was cooked tender, nice thick cut of eye of round (bit unusual but did not mind as the meat was also of high quality) and the broth base also seemed to have been prepped with care. Now, it sounds like everything must have been great based on what I have written so far. However, that's where the positives end. MoPho tries to do way too much with the dishes and there is no room left for the ingredients to speak out. Oysters were fried to perfection but you cannot taste the oysters because they are smothered with overly pungent sauce, and pickled blue cheese. Sauces by themselves (mayo based slightly spicy sauce and red pungent sauce that reminded me of gochujang and ketchup based Korean chicken sauce) overpower the delicate flavor of oysters. It was a shame since the oysters were obviously fried with care yet the dish tasted like slightly upgraded version of Chinese takeout. Pho was the biggest disappointment as this was the main reason for my visit. It was the prime example of how cramming too many things into a dish under the name of "fusion" ends up ruining the dish. Granted, I went with an open mind that this was their take on the classic dish so it was going to be different, but I did not expect the dish to barely resemble the original at all. Base broth seems to be beef broth with spices you would expect out of pho. However, you can barely tell that it is pho broth since the soup is overpowered by soy sauce (my guess is from the braised beef) and mushrooms. It tasted closer to a Shoyu ramen that has too light of a broth base, than a pho, as the only way you can tell this was actually pho was that it had rice noodles (cooked perfectly by the way) and you get hit with a faint scent of star anise and other pho broth spices with your sip. I am not saying that the dish tasted bad by no means. It still had good flavors as a soup noodle, and ingredients were well prepped (for the most part) but it simply would be disrespectful to call this a pho. Now, I kept reiterating that the fundamentals were solid and they prepped the ingredients well, but there was one thing I could not wrap my mind around and really made the quality of the dish plummet. The slow poached egg or onsentamago. The egg was clearly refrigerated as it was quite cold when I ate it and the yolk was not runny due to the temperature. I get it. You can't prep the egg everytime an order is made so you have to prep in advance and it may be necessary to refrigerate them. However, it should be warmed up before serving in a dish that is supposed to come out with hot soup that is supposed to semi cook the eye of round and bean sprouts. At the very least, you should not be putting an onsentamago that came straight out of the fridge on top of a thick cut eye of round. First of all, it made the entire soup lukewarm, and the soup in the area the meat and the egg was placed was cold. Second, by placing a cold egg on top of the eye of round kept the spot from cooking at all, leaving that patch of meat raw and tough, exacerbated by the fact that it was not thinly sliced as you would expect out of typical pho. You can dismiss my other critiques on the dish as personal preference and being too much of an originalist, but this? This is just carelessness and laziness. Not what I would expect from a bowl that is priced 1.5x to even 2x from other places in the area. All in all, the chef behind the dishes seem to be skilled and talented and knows how to put together sauces and flavors that appeal to masses (sweet, savory, spicy). But maybe sometimes it is better to take a bit of a step back when taking on dishes that are enjoyed for the actual taste of the ingredients, instead of filling them to the brim with different flavors. Highly recommend the spring rolls and I suspect that their bowls are probably going to be good but I can't say I would recommend their pho in good conscience. read more

Stopped in for a late lunch on a Friday and the place was wonderfully empty for a bit. Really wanted to try the chicken vindaloo po-mi but was worried it would be a bit too much food for me, so opted for the chicken vindaloo spring rolls instead... Uh-Ma-Zing! Emphasis on the Zing! The most haves are the Crispy Chicken Wings they are a glorious crispy, sweet, savory treat not to be missed. If you're here you're a fan of Pho so Pho IT UP! My favorite one is The Standard: beef broth, ox tail, tendon, braised greens and a slow poached egg to top it off. This flavor packed bowl of goodness will fix whatever ails you. Ok so based on food alone, this place is 5 stars. The food is awesome-Asian fusion done right. I took off a single star for ambiance, service, environment/comfort. It's found in a little strip mall area by a Subway and Burger King, and inside is set up very casual, which is fine. The outside patio area is cute but we were literally drenched by the end of the meal because the misting system to keep it cool out there is quite intense (see fog in photo). Our table was completely wet as well. Ok so on to the good part-food! We started with the crispy fried green beans (pan fried-not battered and deep fried)-delish and felt somewhat healthy; we also got the coconut milk queso (different, shrimpy but good) and the wings with nuoc man caramel (holy moly-best wings of your life, I could drink the "caramel" sauce-not like your typical caramel, but an amazing burst of savory and only touch of sweet umami). We the. Got the pork belly bowl to share as our entree, which was awesome and huge, had a lot of meat in it (both pork belly as well as pulled pork). For drinks, my husband tried the Mopho punch (refreshing) and the tamarind sour (good, quite sour). Overall, we will definitely be back. It's a great casual date night spot with awesome food. However, the broth is underwhelmingly flavorless, and it almost feels like they gentrified the pho. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of kale and poached eggs in pho, but when it's this flavorless, something's gotta compensate. I felt the restaurant tried to cater to their predominantly old suburban customers. This place has the potential to be a hip spot where young Millenials with high-paying jobs come for a cocktail and a bite to eat. The cocktail menu looked very interesting! If I were the chef, I would take a page out of a traditional Viet recipe book and try and make the pho broth have more... soul. The meatballs in the pho were nice, though. VEGAN REVIEW: Who would have guessed that there would be an amazing Asian fusion restaurant in NOLA, the mecca of Cajun-Creole fare? I was not expecting to be wow'd by MOPHO, but its food, atmosphere, and staff make it one of the best places to eat in Louisiana. I ordered the Veggie "go-to bowl" (pho), and was really shocked by the flavor and richness of the broth. The veggies in the pho were cooked and seasoned, bringing another facet of flavor to the pho. The other vegan pho I've had would just have boiled veggies which doesn't add much in terms of flavor. MOPHO's veggie pho is a different story! Definitely the best vegan pho I've had... and I never thought I'd be saying that about a place in the south! The only thing I think I'd like to have seen with my pho is the traditional bean sprouts. There are a handful of dishes on the menu marked with a "V" which indicates vegetarian. I think these could be "veganizable" if you really wanted but it might require lots of questions and a very knowledgeable waitstaff. And just as a note: for all those gluten free folk, pho is usually gluten free! So normally I would give this place 3 stars bc I normally don't like "fusion" places. But let me tell you, their wings, and their beef pho broth with all the meat bumps it up a star! When my bestie, Mary Elizabeth W. Suggested this spot bc she wanted pho I was reluctant bc being Asian I'm very picky about my Asian food. But I was pleasantly surprised by the pho! This was the first time in my entire life that I ran out of noodles bc they gave me so much meat! Of course I did my own build your own pho and got the meatballs, beef, etc but no tendon. When Pho meets Cajun country, it's expected that I need to try this effect. I found myself craving Pho after a couple of hours walking around City Park and playing Pokemon Go. The locals say that this was the place to be, but with it being a Tuesday afternoon, hardly anyone is out playing. Thankful for Yelp as always, for locating MoPho for me on the app. It was about a 1/2 mile walk from City Park, which was nice and convenient for me. MoPho is centrally located, so you don't need to venture out side of New Orleans to enjoy such infusion. Yes, MoPho incorporates an eclectic mix of spices and pairings of food items that it's not hard to say that they were experimenting. I arrived here on a Tuesday afternoon on a casual November 2019 around 2:30pm. It was a small restaurant in a small commercial cluster of restaurants that's anchored by Burger King next door. The lunch crowd had largely gone, so it was nice to find a table so readily available. I probably took at most 1 hour here and I was off to my hotel thereafter. The menu was limited, but it sure packed a punch. I would say that the prices here can be spend, but however, you're getting Pho fusion and other interesting dishes that would make your taste buds come to life. With that said, I ordered the crispy pork spring rolls for the appetizer and the MoPho as the main entrée. Let's just say that it was a delight coming here. While the Pho itself was delicious and a definite interest in the flavoring, I must say that the pork spring rolls were awesome as well. I could taste Indian curry in it, and it was a welcome change from the usual in most Vietnamese restaurants I've visited over the years. One order of the spring rolls was just one roll, so I ordered two for a full effect. The Pho was earthy and a welcome oasis full of flavor that would welcome any weary traveler. Wished I had ordered extra noodles with this dish, but it is what it is. The broth itself had extra flavors that came with the Cajun influence and it was worth the expense to come here, even though I had other things to do in the area anyway. Having Cajun influenced Pho is a bonus for sure. For the most part though, the ambiance here was nice and casual. It was quiet enough till the end of my meal here, when the table next to me started to sing "Happy Birthday". Thought that was cool though. The service itself was pretty good and friendly. If you're in the New Orleans area and want to partake in the Cajun inspired Pho, consider coming to MoPho near City Park in New Orleans. I would recommend coming here if you are a diehard Pho fan. The overall experience here at MoPho New Orleans was good and well needed, especially after an evening flight to New Orleans the night before. MoPho is located at 514 City Park Avenue, about 1/2 mile from City Park. They accept major credit cards, which is always a good thing, as well as cash. Since they are in a cozy cul-de-sac, parking can be limited here, but the parking options are quite generous and optimum for anyone's needs. New Orleans public transit stops in front of the restaurant on City Park Avenue, so you can get here any time they are open to get your Pho fix anytime - as well as other dishes they offer. However, if public transport isn't an option for you, there are uber and lyft at your disposal. They can get you here with no problem at all. For the most part though, my experience here at MoPho was good, although average at the same time. You could tell that the weather was changing, even in New Orleans. It was nice to enjoy a bowl of Cajun Pho during this time. The restaurant itself was arranged nicely and quite nice and homey. If you are in the New Orleans area and craving Pho or anything on their menu, best bet is to get here as soon as you can. Vietnamese with a local New Orleans twist? I'm down. It's in a strip mall removed from the city and closer to the park; doesn't look like much on the outside. What's inside is a fairly large and boisterous space with decidedly Southern music. The menu offers Vietnamese basics as well as some more eclectic items, sometimes with Cajun or Creole flavorings. As a first-timer, however, I was happy to judge them on their ability to execute a veggie pho and spring rolls, which they did quite well. The rolls were expensive, but also quite filling and with a tastefully blackened tofu filling as well as vegetables. The build your own pho give you three toppings, and there are three vegetarian choices, so I had no trouble with that. It yielded more of that delightfully grilled tofu, as well as some kale that seemed to have been braised or roasted in something delicious beforehand, and some fried shallots. Bean sprouts and some (seriously) hot peppers were on the side. The one thing I could have done with was a little more variety of stuff in the pho; a few more vegetables available, and a few more of those hot peppers to garnish. The whole place didn't smell like food, not a single dish that came out had a sent. The NƯỚC CHẤM had no fish sauce, chili or garlic in it. I legit asked for some but they told me it was already on the bowl but I couldn't taste anything. This was the worst meal I had during my visit. It was so bad I told my uber to never eat there and came home to tell everyone how disappointed myself and my friend were in our experience. Ordered a kids veggie bowl, and received a small Togo container with a scoop of white rice and sliced mushrooms, the pork belly steam buns were rock hard and inedible. Great service! My friends and I ordered different bowls and all were amazing. Only gave 4 stars because I personally wasn't a fan of the coconut ranch slaw that came on the side. But will definitely comeback and try more dishes. read more

I was craving banh mi one night, but one of our favorite spots for some reason didn't offer it for delivery so we decided to try mopho. This review is purely on the food and not service - we got our food via delivery. The prices were a little more than typical viet pho spots. I didn't realize mopho was very strong fusion (almost seemed like Indian or some other fusion with Vietnamese) - thought it would still be leaning towards more Vietnamese. The beef pho had a little different flavor than viet style broth and the beef was very thick and chewy. The pho noodles were thicker as well. The pork banh mi had a strong curry flavor and was almost too spicy. I will say the taro bubble tea was delicious. I am not 100% sure we'd eat here again but I have heard that their wings are really good. Mopho just didn't fill our Vietnamese craving like others do. read more

I had high hopes because the food smelled delicious. Unfortunately my chicken came out a little undone. We told the server, the server returned and stated the chef said it's cooked thoroughly, that the red part is just a vein. Chef should just admit it was undercooked.
