My girls had their first appointments here after our insurance changed, and we were very pleased with the experience. The doctor is thorough, caring, and clearly attentive to her patients. The front desk staff were kind and helpful as well. My girls especially loved picking out toothbrushes and receiving a special token for a gift! The only thing I found a bit amusing was the seating--picnic-style chairs when you first walk in, rather than a couch for waiting. Wonderful dentist. My son actually looks forward to his dentist visits, which makes it easier for me. There's a parking garage and it's on the first floor, so it's easy to get to even if you have a stroller. There are toys in the waiting room and they play movies on a screen above to distract them while they clean and they get a prize at the end. It's a great setup. Next year when my daughter is old enough, I'll be bringing both of my kids in for cleanings together. read more

We love this practice. Best care. My son has now grown up and needs an adult dentist! Shoot. So sad to leave Dr. Joanna, but so appreciative of all her care and commitment to my son and his dental issues over the years. Because I used non-fluoridated tooth paste for my boy, he got really bad cavities and need a root canal at you d age (luckily in a baby molar!). We first went to this dental practice in January of this year. I got an earful during our first visit about why we give our kids (4yo & 1yo) occasional juice, why there is still plaque on kids teeth, etc. I initially chalked it up to a dentist passionate about dental care, so booked a follow up visit. After our visit today, I realize there are deep cultural differences we have with Dr. Cheung. She called me "too soft" as a parent, her tone was not kind or respectful, and her choice of words was judgmental. Even after I acknowledged that we could increase flossing, reduce juice intake, and change brushing technique, she continued asking "I don't get it, do you want your kids to have cavities?" To which I responded, of course not. What parent wants that? I already acknowledged the advice and opportunity to make changes! Safe to say, we will be checking out other pediatric dentists. Dr. Cheung simply lays on the criticism and judgment too thick for our taste. We had positive experiences with reception and other staff members. We like the TVs above the dental chairs, good selection of kids toothbrushes, the toy dispensing machines, and the cleanliness of the office. It's just too bad the dentist herself is so unpleasant. read more

Our 6 year old daughter needed her cavities filled and Dr. Cheung was fantastic. She was very communicative and really set me, a highly concerned parent, at ease, discussing her process with us at length. She even let us sit in during the procedure and talked us through everything she was doing. Her goal was to keep the procedure as simple as possible, minimally invasive, and took a very conservative approach. I've been burned by past personal dentist experiences (over-treating) and it takes a lot for me to trust a dentist. Dr. Cheung was truly excellent and has restored my faith in the industry. All 3 of my sons have been seeing Dr. Cheung since the oldest was 2 years old and although we have had several dental emergencies and somewhat complex dental issues, our kids still very much look forward to their bi-annual dentist visits and often ask if they can go more frequently. The kids love the TV screens, the yummy flavors the cleaning supplies they can pick and the gift bag and toy they get at the end of each visit. Dr. Cheung and her entire staff have incredible bedside manner with the kids and do a great job of educating them on how to take care of their teeth. It is also a judgement free zone and I never feel like I'm being judged for being honest about how often my kids brush their teeth. The front office is also great about scheduling appointments, sending reminders and clearly communicating the complex issues that have come up now that their practice is no longer in network with Delta Dental. They have also been incredibly gracious when I've been late trying to get from Oakland to Moraga. While the location is out of the way, the insurance has become complicated and they are probably old enough to see a family dentist, we plan to keep our kids with Dr. Cheung for a few more years and cannot recommend her enough to other families! read more

Her facility is state of the art, including ceiling mounted TVs showing kid friendly cartoons that are the perfect distraction for nervous kids. Dr. Cheung and her staff are warm and professional. I brought my kids to Dr. Joana's practice since it opened. Very clean and beautiful place. However, a few months ago we decided to stop using fluoride toothpaste and use toothpaste with xylitol instead. When we talked with her about that, she got very angry and judgmental, started talking continuously without listening, and treated us with extreme disrespect! During our last visit, she snatched my kids goody bags back saying "give me this, I'll take your toothpaste" and when my twins asked disappointedly "why?" She said "YOUR MOM doesn't want you to have it cause it has fluoride"! Making them feel that I'm depriving them from that cool thing in their goody bag! One of my kids has anxiety, she can't hold that plastic piece in her mouth for an x-ray, and she can't get treatment while awake. Although Dr. Joana agrees that my daughter will not undergo any treatments this time, she still wanted to take her x-rays for the records! She threatened us that if she doesn't have pictures next visit, we will have to "look for another practice". She wanted to do an x-ray to my other kid cause she found cavity, she said that it'll be on one side of her mouth. When I asked her to do the x-ray for both sides and save us from doing full x-rays again next time, she laughed loudly in a very nervous way on how I changed my beliefs and now want my kid to have an x-ray! No matter how many times I explain to her that there is a difference between necessary and unnecessary procedures, she just never gets it! read more

My kids love visiting the dentist and are all about caring for their teeth! Why? Because of this amazing pediatric dentist and office. Dr. Cheung and her staff are amazing with my toddler (he visited right before his 2nd birthday and again at 2.5) and 6-year old. I can't believe they got my 2.5 year old to sit in the chair alone and follow the commands (open, stick out tongue, etc) without my even holding his hand. The place is impeccably clean and beautifully designed for kids. The tv on the ceiling above the chair keeps their attention so the dentist can do her job easily. They love choosing their own toothbrush from the tree, and received tokens to select a prize from the cool "bubble gum" machine dispenser at the end of the visit. And, the dentist even gave them a mask, gloves and toy dental tool that they have been using to play dentist at home. We have only visited for routine check-ups and I will update if we have to have a cavity filled or anything more than standard cleanings, but I have confidence this is the right place for tough jobs too- Dr. Cheung went to a well reputed school and is highly competent in her field. I'm so thankful for this office in getting my kids off to a great start in dental health and hygiene! read more

I am so impressed with Dr Cheung and her team! She just did an incredible job with my 2 young sons. My youngest Kid needed a baby root canal ( he broke his front teeth). Not only she made sure my boys felt very comfortable by giving them extra intentions: watching cartoons, giving goodies & toys but she also did an incredible job. Still absolutely impressed with Moraga Pediatric Dentistry. Hands down, the BEST pediatric dentist that I've seen, especially for kids with special needs. My daughter had her 6 month check up today and today was the first time she let Dr. Cheung do a FULL teeth cleaning. We're talking the whole shabang with the rinsing and flossing and polishing etc etc etc. Dr. Cheung was so patient with my daughter, showing her each tool before she used it, letting her touch it and try it on her fingers before putting it into her mouth. She'd ask my daughter, "Can I try in your mouth now?" and was soooo gentle with her through the entire appointment. I cannot rave about her enough. My daughter was so proud of herself for getting through it and was excited to pick out her princess toothbrush and prize (a bouncy ball) afterwards.
