    Escarole Soup
    Susan R.

Was in my hometown with an hour to kill when hunger struck. Given the 21° temps, I felt like hot soup. Normally my favorite thing to eat here is the Sicilian Zazza, but today I ordered homemade escarole soup. Served with pizza dough bread sticks and a Mexican Coke, I was quickly filled with the warmth of Nonna. (if only my Nonna could cook). Morena's was sold a few years ago when the original owners retired, and I'm glad to see things have stayed the same. I was the only one eating in at 2:30pm, and the Spanish (not Italian) music made it all the more homey.

Food - I ordered linguine and clam sauce but what I got was Fettuccine Alfredo with a couple of garlicky clams on it. (See the pic) In addition, the pasta was undercooked (I know and don't mind al dente...but this was just plain underdone. So two stars were taken away.... My son ordered a sausage and mushroom pizza which was very good, though. Nice crispy crust snd fresh, flavorful toppings. The sauce was mild, but good. Service - Friendly and quick. Ambience - Even though it's a spot where you order from the counter, the interior is actually cute, with checkered table cloths under glass and the tables set up with vinegar, oil, grated cheese, and oregano in addition to salt and pepper shakers. The lighting is soft with chandeliers and I'd you're eating at the restaurant, they will bring you complimentary breadsticks and serve your food when it's done. Synopsis- I may come back for pizza or a sub, but I don't think I'll order pasta here again.

Breadsticks to go with our soup

Extremely friendly staff from the start. You order and pay at the counter, the ambience of a sub shop vs. is a sit down restaurant although they do have seating. If you dine in, after you order and pay, they will bring the order over to you. Prices are very reasonable and quality is good. My friend and I chatted with a very nice gentleman who we believe may be the owner and he recommended their specialty soup, the stacciatella, a Chicken broth-based soup with diced carrots and chicken, dropped egg almost like an egg drop soup. It was hot, flavorful and they were nice enough to split the large into two bowls with complementary warm breadsticks. Then we shared the chicken marsala (no pasta). The chicken was very tender and the marsala sauce was different from any I've ever had, more alongside of a creamy Alfredo looking sauce but it was very tasty. We both enjoyed it. We also wanted to try their pizza and the same gentleman recommended their specialty pizza the Zazza. Unsure of what that meant, we decided to try a large with mushrooms and requested an extra crispy crust. The pizza came last and the crust was excellent, thin and crispy, the pizza contained ample toppings and we discovered that zazza was more like a bruschetta topping versus traditional pizza sauce. A bit on the tangy versus sweet side and though it was good, we both would have preferred the more traditional pizza sauce. The Zazza topping made the pizza a little soggy. We could only eat half of the pizza and left with four large slices. Total tab $42 which was very reasonable for the amount and quality of food. Will return to try other items on the menu. A very steady flow of diners and takeout while we were there. Warm, friendly environment!!

    Linguine aglio e olio

I have only ever gotten take-out from Morena's, but it's one of the best pasta take-out places in Wakefield. I appreciate that they are friendly, fast, and efficient for picking up food. My favorite pasta dish is their Linguine aglio e olio. I've tried other ones including their marinara sauced pastas and also their 'ravioli in bianco' dish--all of them were great. Of course, Morena's also serves pizza which I've gotten before (it was good but I'm a big NY pizza fan instead), however 9 out of 10 times I would order their pasta over pizza. In case anyone is wondering, you can order garlic bread which is not listed on their menu.

The fettuccine "Alfredo" I added cheese to it when I got home to give it some sort of flavor. I also had them put chicken on it.

I don't like leaving bad reviews however after trying this place for the first time I'm baffled at how the reviews are mostly positive. I ordered fettuccine alfredo. It was more like dry buttered flavorless noodles. There was minimal Alfredo sauce to be seen or tasted and the dish was overall really bland. My boyfriend got linguine aglio e olio and you can barely taste the garlic which is a key part to this dish? And it had olives in it which is not traditional but I guess if they have their own spin on it, fine. Maybe it was a bad night or we didn't order their best dish but it didn't leave a great impression.

Morena is a great local spot if you're looking for pasta or pizza. Their soup is good and they have a lot of choices.

Typically I got the large pizza and wings.....My first batch of wings were EXCELLENT. I ordered the wings 2 more times it tasted like they were either taken strait out of the trash or were from 2 days prior which shocked me. Nothing here is cheap , it's very premium priced. So you would really expect the BEST. I did not get their best. Not sure if they saw the destination was the was a urban area and they sent me that crap intentionally IDK, IDC. No excuses when I'm paying. I definetly will not be ordering wings via delivery again EVER! They can send that garbage to another sucker in the supply chain. I usually get the Rustico which is sausage peppers and ricotta. It's always really tasty. Pizzas come in two sizes, I think a 12" and 16". At 5pm on a Thursday we were seated next to a table where the GM was interviewing a candidate for a management position. "Pizza is not our product," the GM said. "It's what gets people in the door. Our product is customer service." Really? Then you're failing. No one was at the front desk when we walked in. Several employees sat in the front booths on laptops, and nobody approached us for five minutes. Both of our pies arrived uncut. Neither the expediter nor the waitstaff noticed, so we had to ask for them to be cut. Despite all the floor staff milling around, the bartender was assigned as our server. I don't blame her, she was hustling alone to get her station ready. Nobody asked if we wanted another round or dessert. We had to chase down our check. All while the GM expounded on how tired he was of managers, several of whom he'd apparently just lost, failing to motivate their crews. Dude, you're obviously part of the problem. This is how a beloved brand dies.

Second sandy was a sub that we requested to be in a wrap - when we went to pick it up we were scolded and told that we need to order a large sub if we want it in a wrap (now how would we know this?). We were also told that they do not have spinach wraps, again as if we should know. Don't most places call if they have questions on a request and not sass their customers? We're just trying to get chicken salad in a wrap. Chicken salad was nothing special and the wrap was constructed in a way where all of the toppings are hanging on one side of the road while the main honcho is on the other - it just doesn't work for the bites!
