This was SHOCKING to me because I have never had a cavity before in my life and take great care of my teeth. I was told I would need a deep planing, laser and irrigation treatments, and more. And as suspected, I don't have anything wrong with my teeth, no periodontal disease, and did not require a deep cleaning or laser and irrigation. I had a regular cleaning by a hygentist and when I shared with the dentist and hygentist what this establishment told me, they were shocked, literally laughed, and said there was no way I had that/needed treatments like that. They said they hate hearing stories like this because it gives their industry a bad rap. Through my insurance I did not have to pay a DIME for my standard cleaning. I am so happy I trusted my gut and found a dentist office with stellar reviews and did not receive care here. This place is a complete scam. Aggressive Tactics: During the periodontal probing (measuring gum pockets), the dentist scraped my back molars so aggressively that my gums bled--seemingly to justify their immediate claim that I needed an expensive "deep cleaning." Lack of Care: After making my mouth bleed, the dentist handed me off to an assistant after a mere 30 seconds of dialogue and abruptly left. I wasn't even offered water or mouthwash to rinse out the blood. The Cost: The assistant immediately pulled up a billing screen quoting me over $2,000 for the deep cleaning. The entire environment felt predatory, right down to the aggressive, propaganda-like informational posters and brochures plastered everywhere. Not an isolated incident: To make matters worse, a coworker of mine had an identical experience at their Mission Valley location. They were told they needed an emergency root canal despite never having a cavity in their life. They started with Dr. Hage taking my wisdom teeth out , and then Dr. Dina did some quick composite (white colored) fillings to close some gaps for me. They had informed me about ortho being the best the long term plan but gave me alternatives since I needed something with faster results for my bests friends wedding . The only consistently kind, professional, and personable person I encountered at this office was Luis at the front desk. He was wonderful every time I came in. I visited Smile Designers three separate times: once for a cleaning and twice for extractions with bone grafts. I genuinely tried to give the doctor multiple chances because I understand that everyone can have an off day. Unfortunately, after three visits, the same pattern of dismissive, rushed, and unprofessional treatment continued. I initially chose this office because it was one of the only offices in my area that accepted my insurance. During my cleaning, the dental assistant/hygienist did not speak to me at all. She never explained what she was doing, checked on my comfort, or told me how to signal if I needed her to stop. The cleaning felt extremely aggressive and rushed, and her demeanor came across as irritated and demanding. My second visit was for an extraction and bone graft. The doctor had virtually no bedside manner and did not explain the procedure before beginning. What concerned me immediately was that he entered the room and asked me what he was doing that day. I would expect the dentist performing an extraction to have reviewed my X-rays and treatment plan beforehand. He then numbed me without explaining what he was doing or giving me any way to indicate that I needed him to pause. I have been numbed many times at dental offices, so I know the process, but this felt unusually rushed and heavy-handed. After numbing me, he promptly left the room. I was left sitting there while saliva accumulated in my mouth. After trying to get someone's attention without success, I actually ended up using the suction myself. When the doctor returned, he simply told me to open my mouth. He did not ask whether I was ready, explain what was about to happen, or establish any signal I could use if I needed him to stop. At one point, I heard him tell the assistant, "hold her tongue back," and he proceeded with the extraction. Once the tooth was removed and the bone graft completed, the doctor left the room without giving me any aftercare instructions whatsoever. I sat there confused until a staff member laughed and told me, "you can go." I went to the front desk crying because I had no idea what I was supposed to do after the procedure. I asked for aftercare instructions and whether I needed antibiotics. The doctor never came back out to speak with me, and I was simply told to take ibuprofen. About a month later, I returned because I needed another tooth removed. Unfortunately, the experience was very similar. This time, the male dental assistant working during my procedure was talking and joking with other staff while the extraction was taking place, to the point that the doctor had to remind him to stay focused. After the tooth was removed, the assistant began commenting that he believed part of my tooth had been left behind. The doctor corrected him and explained that what he was seeing was part of my jawbone. Having an assistant speculate like that while I was still in the chair was incredibly unsettling. Then, without saying anything or warning me, the assistant took a paper towel and aggressively wiped my face. Once again, after the extraction and bone graft, I was given essentially no aftercare instructions. About a week later, I developed severe pain and sought a second opinion from another dental provider. That provider recommended antibiotics and expressed surprise that I had not been prescribed them following my procedure. I am leaving this review because I would want someone else to know what they may be walking into. If your insurance assigns this office as your primary dental location, I strongly recommend asking whether you can change providers. My biggest issue was not simply that the appointments were unpleasant. It was the complete lack of communication, patient reassurance, explanation, and basic bedside manner during invasive dental procedures. I repeatedly felt as though procedures were simply being performed on me rather than anyone actually caring for me as a patient. The best way I can describe the experience is that it felt like being at a mechanic shop, except you are the car. I am genuinely appalled by the way Dr. Hage communicated with and treated me throughout these visits, and I would never return to this practice. Luis, however, deserves recognition for being the one consistently positive part of my experience at Smile Designers. Thank you for always being kind, helpful, and professional. You're the best.

The problem is, there was no exam done. We agreed at the time of the appointment that I would take my daughter to get full x-rays through her insurance. Dr. Chen charged me $54 for the x-ray and $195 up front for the exam. She said when we went back with the x-rays, she would do the full exam and I wouldn't have to pay for it again because I was paying upfront. We decided to go through insurance for treatment and I requested a refund of the $195 for an exam that wasn't done. I was offered $100 refund, then $115 refund by June. After explaining that I wanted a refund for the $195 because that's what I paid, she became very rude. This is fraud there's no other way to put it. Charging for a service that wasn't done and not refunding is illegal. I will be following pursuit to report this business that shouldn't be practicing. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place, there are plenty of other Holistic Dentists. This place is very unorganized and unprofessional. I'm sure they will reply with some BS excuse, but trust me and the others who have had a bad experience. We aren't lying, you have been warned.

Like many patients, price factors in greatly when managing our dental costs. Fortunately, Delta Dental listed Rancho Dental as a provider. We felt that by no means "cheap", the prices we paid for the care we received were always fair. We have had a lot of work done at his "one dentist office" over the years. Disappointingly, after a return call from his office today, we now find ourselves priced out of his care and no longer valued as patients. After a quote by two other offices the front desk referred my wife to a year or so ago for surgical removal of an abscessed tooth and a subsequent implant and crown, tipping the scales at $7500 (the marble flooring WAS nice though), we found, through friends, a dentist across the border in Tijuana. The facilities and equipment were every bit as sanitary as we'd get here, the work was comparable, and the prices were easily half and in some cases a third the cost. The drawback is the time factor and MX driving, but for the savings, it's incidental (no pun intended). Today, after making an appointment for my wife with Dr Rische for a tooth ache, I was informed in a call back from the front office, "Angela", that our business was only welcome on the condition that if the tooth in question needed a root canal and subsequent crown, (we could choose any endodontist for the RC), we would be expected to have the crown (or filling) done by Dr Rische. This before any exam was performed. We've had our share of crowns done by Dr Rische over the years, the 5-year warranty was generous, and always accepted the $500 or $600 copay our insurance provided for and still does. Those days unfortunately are gone. The cost I was quoted at Rancho Dental was around $1500 for a zirconium crown on a molar which is all the Dr. now offers. I'm sure it's a top-quality job and wish I could afford it, I would. As my wife and I both were in the office the past couple of weeks for check-ups for pain, my wife for a tooth which the Dr referred her to an endodontist for, and I for pain which apparently (unbeknownst to me) was related to a surgical extraction of an implant and subsequent bone graft at the site (performed by our dentist in TJ), the front office implied that we were taking advantage of their services, stating we'd get an exam then go somewhere 'cheaper' to have the work done. IOW, rather than getting an exam which might or might not be related to work another dentist had performed, the idea of us going to another dentist for major work meant we were taking advantage of their office. Nothing could be further from the truth. I explained that we had no idea what was causing us pain and went for the exams in good faith. It never occurred to me that all along we were viewed as just a credit card not as valued patients needing care, after spending what must be thousands of $ over the years. This was a 'preemptive' call we received from the front office who, because they didn't make enough money from our past two visits, now didn't want to take a chance on not making any more from my wife's discomfort at her appointment tomorrow. No conversation about financial assistance or any desire for a conversation at all, only [sic] "if you're going to go elsewhere to have major work done rather than pay our prices, you're better off going elsewhere for everything." Wow. Leaves me with a gnawing in my gut at the tactless hard sell response to longtime customers who always acted in good faith with loyalty, courtesy and respect. Unfortunately, those values mean little at Rancho Dental.
