Morning Star Bubble Tea is one of those hidden gems for those in the know. It's tucked away on Harbourside Drive in a somewhat industrial area near the auto mall car dealerships the area was once known for. For reference, it's beside Thomas Hass Chocolates, a block away from Spa Utopia and a private boarding school, Bodwell Academy High School. I was in the area and feeling thirsty so it was a nice treat to indulge in an ice cold mango slush with bubbles and coconut jelly. Next time I'm in the area I'll try one of their many food menu offerings like cutlet on rice, house special on rice, stir fried rice noodle, sausage and mapo tofu. read more

This place is in the middle of nowhere - industrial area by the waterfront. It's not bad though. The tea is good. However I'm here to write about the food. We had a couple of the rice dishes - - fried pork chop Taiwanese style over rice - nice and crispy pork - chicken cutlet - crispy and good flavor in the breading. However I think I ordered the wrong thing cuz it was curry tho the curry was good - mapo tofu - I know this isn't Taiwanese but I craved it anyways and it was good! Not too spicy. Only had a side of veggies. The only thing is they don't have some other standard fare like green onion pancakes. Would come back for helping of bubble tea and Taiwanese food. read more

I was in this area for a meeting, and needed lunch somewhere close. I didn't realize that this little place was tucked into the middle of no where! I'm glad I went in, the food is amazing!! I believe it's Taiwanese style food, and this is their Pork Stew on rice. It was so yummy and even lasted the drive home. (They're currently take out only for Covid reasons) My husband took a bite and now he's asking me to take him there lol For drinks; I bought the milk tea and lemon black tea. Very simple, but tasty! I noticed this bubble tea shop when I was in the area and stopped by to buy a lychee with coconut jelly bubble tea. It was reasonably priced at $5.50. Drink tasted as expected and reminded me of the classic bubble tea options when I was in college. The place is not super fancy and their menu offerings is average at best. read more

Good place for Bubble Tea on the North Shore. We have only tried the bubble tea, so I can not comment on the food quality. This is a smaller joint located across from a high school with a lot of international students. Bubble teas run about $5 per. It's a mix of powder and fresh fruit flavours. I like that you can mix two flavours. We like to go with Taro/ Coconut - and when we bring kids here they will experiment with all different kinds of mixes. It's also located beside some nice walking paths by the water, so on a sunny day you can grab you bubble tea and go for a walk. Good spot. read more

Had no idea there was bubble tea in North Vancouver, much less in an industrial area. What are the chances, seriously. Parking is available in the lot out front. As Marc D. mentioned, the Chinese place is actually "Yang Mama" or "Ms. Yang's". I've never understood why some businesses have different-meaning names in different languages. Kind of like Germany vs Deutscheland. The inside looked really cute and cozy but something was off. Marc D. once again explains everything. The place really does look like some Mexican takeout joint, with the shiny tiles embedded in the tables. The place is small, with maybe 8 seats in total. The staff inside (looks like a couple) spoke Taiwanese Mandarin, and as we sat there, several Taiwanese customers (and their dogs, literally) came in and out for takeout. That passes the authenticity test. Or maybe it's because there is no other bubble tea for kilometres. I used my benchmark strawberry milk tea to judge the place. Unfortunately, it just wasn't that good. It tasted just like a pile of (not so red) strawberries dumped into a blender. I wasn't even sure if there was milk in the thing. Maybe it was my fault though, as I did ask the guy for "low sugar". The bubbles were okay. Not sure I'll be back, but hopefully there's enough of a Chinese community around here to keep the place afloat. read more

I wasn't aware that they had changed their location until recently when I wanted to visit this place again. My mom had heard through word of mouth on where their new location was and getting here with our other family member, she decided to take me recently for a old time visit as I used to go to this place when I was younger. They still serve the bubble tea and these asian drinks. For nostalgic reasons, I decided to eat their deep fried chicken nuggets because that's what I used to always order from them a long time ago. It's still pretty much as tasty as I remembered. The only thing I disliked was the price. The single serving of these chicken nuggets costs $6. While it's not really all THAT much money, but $6, as tasty as it is, it's not really worth the price, especially since their plate of these meals only costs a few bucks more, but it's still a little pricey. The only likely reason why they charge that much is because there's a rich private school literally right across from there that can afford to go eat at that price. But for what it's worth, it's still a pretty tasty little place to go visit if you're ever around the corner. read more

* Taiwanese reincarnation of a Mexican place * Tucked away in an industrial part of North Vancouver is this little restaurant that is decorated like a Mexican restaurant. Signs that led me to that conclusion: 1) Cactus shaped window metal theft bars 2) Cactus shapes built into the wall 3) Live cactus plants 4) Hanging wax peppers 5) A few latin style mosaic tables 5) Wooden tables that read "Taco Zone" (That last one was the biggest clue, and checking online apparently there used to be a restaurant at this location called Mexico Taco Zone a LONG time ago.) Signs that point to it being a Taiwanese reincarnation: 1) Menu board is written entirely in Chinese 2) There are a bunch of newspapers to read and they are all in Chinese 3) All the staff and customers were speaking in Mandarin 4) A single bubble tea decoration is on a Mexican looking mirror 5) They have about 40 varieties of bubble tea drinks 6) They offer home-style Taiwanese dishes like chicken nuggets on rice, pork chop, mapo tofu, rice with meat sauce, etc., etc. I had one of my standard test dishes the Taiwanese style chicken nuggets on rice. It came on a Styrofoam plate (boo). The rice had a decent meat sauce. It also came with Taiwanese pickles, cabbage, a fried egg (yolk still runny - yum!) with thick soy paste, and some canned corn (WTF?!?!). The nuggets themselves were large chunks of well marinated chicken in the typical Taiwanese coating and not greasy at all. The food reminded me of what I have had in Taiwanese homes - kind of Taiwanese mother's cooking style, if you know what I mean. Ironically the place apparently has a second name besides Morning Star. It is also called "Yeung Mama." Which seems to make sense based on the cooking. Service was very friendly as well. While I wouldn't make a special trip to North Vancouver I would certainly stop by again if in the area and craving some Taiwanese snacks in a taco zone setting! read more

This is one of my favourite places for Taiwanese comfort food and bubble tea. Their deep fried chicken and chicken wings are spectacular, and so is their "milk with pearls"! I live in Burnaby but will make the trek to North Vancouver just for this restaurant. It also bring backs many high school memories. The restaurant has since moved to a new location and all the endearing Mexican decorations are gone. Congratulations to Yang mama for opening in their new location. Thank god we left our email on their mailing list and we went there just 3 days after their opening. The new location is much better. In the automall area next to Thomas Haas. They are in the location where EZ gourmet use to be. They don't have a sign yet but hopefully their sign will be up soon so many people will find them. Best Taiwanese food in Vancouver, really represent how a restaurant should be. Clean, fast, tasty and most importantly friendly!

First of all,i read all the reviews of the bubble tea here and i wanna make a comment of those reviews. If you really wanna judge bubble tea from every different store,you should try the most traditional flavor instead of some other funky style which is not authentic. In Taiwan,We don't really have the bubble tea made with slush,such as mango ,strawberry or whatever fruit slush that is. It won't be called bubble tea,it will be just slush add some bubbles,or whatever drinks added with bubbles. and second,people from Taiwan must have experience of eating Lunch boxes!!! and we all know ,all those dishes are cooked freshly at noon,and people always line up for selecting what vegi they wanna get to go with their pork chop lunch box,chicken leg lunch box,and more. And the "canned Corn " is always one of the selections,but it is not they just get it out of can and serve it,they usually steam it or stir fried it and make it taste better! It's a culture,it's a style,it's a habit,whatever you wanna call it. This is so far the most authentic Taiwanese restaurant for lunch boxes and some side dishes,and even the soup I can find in Vancouver. I don't know which part they are from in Taiwan,but whenever I go and have food from them ,I feel like I am home and eating food my mom made for me and saying welcome home to me! Authentic Taiwanese food and bubble tea in North Vancouver!

Yang mama's place is a family run business and one of the first bbt shops that opened on the north shore. The food has a homestyle taste to it that is great for international students that miss home. The best thing about this place is yang mama and the fresh bbt that her family serves. Though the decor is from the old restaurant they bought it from, at least they are using the money for good ingredients instead of flashy decor. Authentic taiwanese food! This is my go to place for lunch as I work in North Van. Not a fancy place, but the food is not affected by that. The menu is decently priced. I would say I prefer their food over their bubble tea (as I like my pearls chewy), but I still get both every time I visit. If you're craving home-style taiwanese food, give this place a try. It can be hard to find parking during lunch hours as they only have 2 spots and the street parking is usually packed. Highly recommended! read more
