I've been coming to Morningside Bakery for a little over a year now and it is the epicenter of this cute little town. They have everything I love for morning coffee n a bagel or pastries. I've worked my way through their bakery cases for breakfast and lunch. Most recently, I finally tried the much raved about wood fired pizzas and they are exceptional! My favorite is the Matt's! I really like this bakery/restaurant; the food is excellent and in general so is the service. The "meh" rating is due to the tacky payment set up and attempts to manipulate customers into leaving tips for counter service. Tired of employees staring at the screen while you pay and looking disappointed that they didn't win the lottery. I go less often because I can't stand places that do this. Please, 1 - get rid of the tip screen. Stop begging for tips. better yet, stop accepting tips. 2 - pay your people a decent, living wage. 3 - raise prices if that's the only way to do it. Many of us would rather pay more and not deal with the emotional baggage of employees drooling over the very visible tip screen. It's tacky, it's obnoxious, and you would have more business if just paid people and didn't require customers to supplement employee wages. read more

As was our first time visiting this fine establishment...last summer, excellent! Our second time there today. We came down from Hinesburg. Such an impressive Bake shop, Neapolitan Wood Fired Pizzeria, great, great wine selection and quality grocery goods everywhere. Many Italian grocery items you can not find in a traditional grocery store. Check out the shelves adjacent to the seating and Wine area. I wanted to buy one of everything. Paul was on the oven today. Last time it was owner Matt. Both times I was fortunate enough to sneak out back and "talk shop" with each of them. Both welcomed my interest / we talked about pizza procedures...ingredients they use...it was good. I wasn't shunned away / each made me feel welcome. They know their stuff folks!!!! They defiantly set themselves apart from many many other shops. An obvious passion for what they do and commitment to quality. And it shows. Only place I know of in this neck of the woods that uses real San Marzano D.O.P. Tomatoes from Italy. Vermont Smoke and Cure Pepperoni made here in Hinesburg! And I believe they use Sausage made in Barre....as said, all Quality Products, I can attest! Our pizzas came out absolutely perfect, a few lightly charred bubbles on the crust, great undercarriage and "Roll Your Eyes" Flavor. Could not have been better. Hot and Delicious. My wife had the Margherita with VT. Fresh Mozzarella cut Basil leafs, while I had the tried and true Cheese Pizza. Both had that extra touch that shows they care...just the right amount of drizzle of EVOO. Lucky for all those who live in Brandon or close by. If you desire Quality Bakery Products, Neapolitan Pizza, Grocery Goods and Great Wines from around the globe at affordable prices......and great friendly service.... this is a place you must go to! Went to Gourmet Providence since they changed owners and had such a better experience! The place looks like a millions bucks! You can actually walk through the store! Disappointment. I've just got back from a wonderful weekend in Vermont. And I was really exited about this cheese... Long story short, I was on my way back home from Vermont. I checked reviews and picked this place on my way home. I was really exited about local croissants, which is by the way was not so fresh, but more I was super exited about cheese from local (Brandon) farm. I love cheese, I can eat cheese day and night, so I picked it, and even checked a date on a pack. I would not suggest this place to anyone. It's super sad, because they killed my cheese mood for a night... be careful people. read more

She literally snapped at me multiple times as she was taking my very basic order and made a sarcastic comment at me when I was checking out, as I was actively trying to be pleasant. This is a little gem of a bakery in a town where such fine things didn't recently exist. I grew up just north of Brandon and until Gourmet Provence and Cafe Provence opened on the main street a handful of years ago, Brandon was becoming a bit of a cultural ghost town. Fortunately, fine food attracts tourists and foodies and the like, and now people have more of a reason to visit Brandon. Lots of little shops have opened their doors in recent years, though whether Brandon can make an economic comeback is still up in the air... The two owners of Gourmet and Cafe Provence are from the Provence region of France. The husband, a chef, is the creator of some fabulous food! Many probably thought the French owners took quite a gamble opening their shops in Brandon, which is a lovely town to look at, but didn't have much commerce or boast any great restaurants until these shops moved in. Gourmet Provence is especially known for its pastries, made-to-order cakes and elegant desserts, but the store also has a nice selection of local cheeses, patés, gourmet condiments and Vermont specialty products, as well as imported vinegars and organic pastas. For lunch the shop offers panini, sandwiches and wraps, as well as salads. I love their quiche Lorraine. The selection is always changing. Additionally, Gourmet Provence's specialty gift room has Pre de Provence Soaps, La Rochere Glassware and April Cornell linens, and the wine room has hundreds of local, domestic and imported wines. I only go to Brandon to eat at Gourmet Provence or its sister restaurant Cafe Provence. It's a beautiful little town with lovely old houses and vistas. In its hay day more than a century ago, the town must have been bustling with business and wealth (as the large and lovely old houses that line the streets would indicate). I highly recommend Brandon for a day excursion. Visit Gourmet Provence or Cafe Provence, you're sure to like one or both! read more

I once wrote a review about Gourmet Provence, Bakery, when it was under the previous owner, but I can see it was removed. That's okay. It was not favorable. BUT since the new owners have taken over I am over the moon happy! It was the weird customer service that turned me off before. I'd be followed from case to case being asked "Do you know what you want yet?", over & over like they were always trying to hurry me along. I'd say "I'd like to look in the cases for a minute" & the employee would continue to follow me from case to case staring at me over the case. I never could even look at the menu without being stared at & asked if I knew what I wanted yet! But now? I LOVE going in! I'm greeted when I go in but I am allowed to peruse the selections in peace. I never even knew they had a back room before! The coffee is EXCELLENT & I can finally try some different pastries & have a chance to look at the menu board. And at the selection of cold drinks in the coolers. The store is now a clean, less cluttered, airy, cheerful, & inviting environment. Even the employees seem much happier! I met the new owner, Matt, shortly after they took over. He is very personable & I could tell he wants to make this a "go-to" place rather than a stop while passing through place. Stopped by this bakery cafe a few times. Each time was absolutely awful. An apple pie was undercooked and much too sweet. This was a most embarrassing hostess gift. I'm not sure how you can ruin a simple fruit tart but they sure managed it:pastry pale and undercooked, custard separating and tasteless, Fruits were sour tasting. Roulade was dry and over sweet. The Smores cupcake was inedible. I would never have gone back to this bakery but it was new and the only one in town. It certainly hasn't improved with time. When registering complaints to owner, she did take notes although we were advised that "it all looked good and we don't taste everythng" In fairness the ham and cheese croissant was fine. read more

Super cute store, but I had a very unpleasant experience with the woman at the cash register. I thought they served food and asked about a menu I saw (which was actually for Cafe Provence). She gave me a weird look and rudely told me that menu wasn't for them. I have never felt so disrespected in a place of business before.
