He had xrays and I was sent there by my dentist with a message from her for an extraction. They tell me no this is just the consult. They had my health questions filled out on the email they sent me with meds and health issues filled out. I don't have a lot of time as I work full time and care for an ill family member on hospice. My time is limited. There is barely a tooth there as it was decayed under the crown. When I did see the dentist he asked me two questions stuck his finger in my mouth and said ok we can do this today but I have to fit you in. Two hour wait time. If they had told me that it was a consult I would not have taken the appointment. He may be a good surgeon but there was no communication. They asked me to be there at 720 and they didn't open the door until 730. Then they wanted a fee for a consult, that was a hard no. So no I would not recommend him. His office was all pretty furniture and big screen TVs but I feel it was just a little too foofoo and not enough medical.

After a brief wait and initial exam, it turned out that I needed a fair bit of dental work. I sat down with Karen to discuss- she explained everything empathetically, efficiently, and in terms I could easily understand. She didn't pressure me to make any decisions before I was ready, and went above & beyond to help make sure I was taken care of. She is a true asset to the excellent team here. After finishing the business side of things, it was time to start scheduling the dental work I needed. I was expecting to wait a few weeks or more to get started, but once again my expectations were blown away when I was told they could start the work the same day also. I am thoroughly impressed, and plan to continue going to Aspen Dental for the foreseeable future for sure.

Why not ‍ I'm traveling to the West Coast in a couple of weeks and just wanted them to secure the crown before I travel, I could come and address underlying issues when I get back from my trip. Got in the dentist chair, the crown was loose and hadn't come out yet. The dentist removed the crown easily, told me that she couldn't reinstall it for a number of reasons, first, there wasn't enough tooth left for the cement to hold the crown in place, second, the tooth was cracked, 3. Tooth had a cavity and needed to be pulled, 4. she couldn't re-glue the crown because if it broke, she'd be held liable. They wanted me to sign a contract on the spot that included extraction, a denture to replace the tooth and crown for a $1,000. Red Flags...I declined, took my crown and left. I went up to Dr. Richard Levin in Troy, 43 years practicing dentistry. He not only replaced the crown without issue, he gained a new client. what a relief! I'm scheduled for a full examination and cleaning when I get back from my West Coast trip. Aspen Dental is like a tooth mill. There's no way I would recommend a place like this. I feel bad for the staff because they were very nice the dentist didn't seem to care about anything except getting that bill as high as possible The dentist was all about the Benjamins. No, thanks. Thank God for professionals like Dr Richard Levin.

Everyone who checked in after me, was called first. I watched 2 people who checked in at the same time as me, walk out the door to go home. At one point I politely asked one of the receptionist how long it would be and got a snarky answer while she tried to hide behind her computer monitor to avoid eye contact. At the end, there was only me and one other patient in the waiting area, who checked in long after I did. Another couple came in and asked how long I had been waiting and I told them my appt was at 2:30, and it was now 4 o'clock. The other receptionist stood up and yelled at me across the room. I had to have a broken tooth extracted in March of 2023 which my general dentist could not handle,…read moreso the dentist referred me to an oral surgeon (Empire Oral Surgery). The appointment required well over a month, and I asked if the healthcare staff wore masks while performing the procedure and got an equivocal assurance that they did. When I arrived for the procedure I found that all the staff at the practice were not wearing masks of any kind, and when I asked if the attending surgeon would be wearing a mask I was told that he would not (you can read my May 18th review of Empire Oral Surgery if you want the details). I know that there is no longer any law requiring that healthcare workers wear masks and that politicians have declared that the COVID pandemic is over, but the pandemic is *not* over and the law often is wrong. I had to beat a retreat and then search for a surgeon who would observe basic biosafety protocols. I called my general dentist and asked for any other oral surgeons he might recommend and came away with a list of four. To their credit the first two offices were honest and said that they would not wear masks (one "No" and a second "Hell no") but the third, Dr. Gelder's office, said that they'd "take it under advisement" and get back to me. They called me back an hour later and said they'd wear masks for the procedure. I offered to furnish the N95 masks (sealed and factory stamped) but they said they had them on hand. The only problem was that they'd have to schedule the appointment two months out. I accepted and babied the broken tooth for the next couple of months. Once the appointment came I have to say the experience was completely different than Empire Oral Surgery. I was greeted by a nurse wearing an N95 mask, taken to a well-ventilated surgery suite, and was worked on by Dr. Gelder who also made a point of wearing an N95 mask while entering, administering anesthesia, performing the procedure, and suturing up/telling me how to handle aftercare. This was not a simple extraction: it involved a tooth that had vertically sheared and broken below the gum line, and it required a studied hand to handle it (believe me, in the five months I had to wait for this procedure I had plenty of time to read about it on the internet). Dr. Gelder and his nurse were extremely good at their work. If you want a very very good surgeon -- Dr. Gelder (and his nurse) are the people to go to. If you want someone who will respect your concerns about COVID -- Dr. Gelder (and his nurse) are the people to go to.
