We vowed we'd come back when we picked up the game, and after a year and a half of playing and 2 years after first discovering this course, we made our return to Morro Bay GC aka "The Poor Man's Pebble." GAWD, this course ranks waaaay up there for a county course! It's well maintained, managed and definitely affordable considering. The KILLA views alone is worth the price of admission. I may have not have played my best but that didn't phase me...just being out there was calming. The holes had variety; elevation changes, sloping fairways, and doglegs. The greens were tough for us to read...they looked simple enough but there were extremely subtle breaks. There's no other way I would've wanted to spend the 24th of last month...and it was an excellent finale to a birthday present that seemed to never end. =) read more

Golf course is extremely nice and well kept. Greens are very fast and hard to read but a very fun course. The reason for the 2 stars is that as soon as we walked into the pro shop the man at the front counter was rude and sarcastic with us. We figured it was because we were all between 19-21 years old, but when we asked a Marshall where the driving range was he was very arrogant and just pointed in a direction and drove off. We had to ask another golfer and he was more helpful than the Marshall was. The only friendly staff member we met there was "Lou" he was a very kind man and came and chatted with us before we tee'd off on the first hole. It's a very nice course but all 5 of the people we folded with agreed we won't be returning because of how shitty the staff was to us. read more

I play here every Thanksgiving morning and couldn't think of something I would rather be doing. This is course is great! The front nine has some remarkable views of the bay. The entire course is surrounded by well established Eucalyptus trees. Watch out for the ice plant on a few holes! That stuff will eat your ball alive. (Definitely think that they should remove it as it is non-native and just a pain to deal with when playing golf). They're not set up as a practice facility, however. Small driving range...just big enough to warm up before playing golf, though. If you're in the Morro Bay/Los Osos/San Luis Obispo area and want to get out for a beautiful round of golf with some great views, this place is for you! read more

A pleasant, challenging oddity of a course. if you require flat lies the course will punish you. Everything hilly and on a tilt, especially the greens. What I like about it is it's evident that it's run with pride. Only three sand traps and no water, but the greens are the story here. If I recall, above the holes on the front the greens break right to left. Holes 10-12 have wicked, subtle breaks to the greens. It's a tough walk, which I did. I joined a foursome and played in 3.5 hours during the week. The views are great. It's tough to play for fist time because you can't always see the hills or dropoffs you are hitting to. If you are a decent golfer it's pretty tough to lose a ball. I had a good time and would come back. The bigger hills are on the front. read more

Great course and well maintained, but staff is an issue. We just returned from having a family reunion in the area with people coming from across the nation. Would never return because of our initial check in experience with the pro shop and sarcastic staff. We had two tee times (back to back) booked in the morning for 2 threesomes. Our party arrived a day early and we stopped by the course and proshop to confirm our reservation for the following day. So far so good. Upon arrival on the actual day of play, we tried to check in for 6 players but were told that carts were limited and that only 3 could check in but for the remaining 3 players to come 30 mins before our tee time to pay and get the carts. Fine, so three of us checked in and we informed the two individuals working the desk/shop that the other three players were on their way. Well, 30 mins before tee off the remaining 3 players attempted to check in but there was no record of a reservation in the system. Well, I find that hard to believe being that 1) we confirmed a day earlier in person and 2) while the first threesome checked in we were told for the other threesome to check in 30 mins before our scheduled tee time. Then they proceeded to tell me that I cancelled the second threesome upon checking in initially. Long story short, the people at the pro shop "squeezed" the second threesome in and told us that they were going to charge us $20/player extra for this. I was then asked if I found this funny...well, no I don't find this funny. Poor customer service and no course is worth putting up with is. read more

This golf course is a ton of fun. I started my day by getting lunch at the clubhouse and the burger and fries were great - well priced too, under $10. First hole had an awesome view of the ocean, and throughout the course the views are breathtaking. As far as the course, when putting, the ball aways goes to the bay. Remember that! Difficulty of the course is pretty spot on for the average player - the tough greens make up for the small amount of bunkers. Playing this course was a blast! read more

I'm a local and I love this course. I don't usually play weekends, but yesterday I was really frustrated with slow play and the party atmosphere on the course. Had a group following us that had loud music and non-player wives and kids. In front of us more of the same, large groups with non-playing people in carts slowing everything down. Won't play on weekends anymore unless someone's visiting. Time for management to tighten things up. read more

We enjoyed our round of golf. The fairways and greens are well kept. The course is a little narrow, but we did t have any problems finding our errant shots. For a 10am start time on a Saturday, we still finished play in 4 hrs. Note: the greens are tricky. Positioning your shots on the course set you up for much easier second shots. Played here 11/1/21. The course is beautiful with spectacular views of Morro Bay. It's an old style course with lots of old trees. Green fees are very affordable. Fairways are narrow but playable. Greens were really slow, perhaps because they had recently been punched. We played the round in 4 hours. The pro shop staff were polite and helpful. Merchandise in the pro shop is sparse. The cart paths and pro shop/restaurant building could use a face lift. Since the course is on state park land, that might not happen any time soon. None of this detracted us from having a wonderful time playing this beautiful, classic course. Can't wait to return to the area and play again. read more

Just golfed this course today, thought I'd give a little review for the heck of it. This was my first time going to the Morro Bay course and my first golf outing in the SLO county area. My expectations were high after playing in multiple courses out of state that were some of the better courses I've played at. I go to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, so while I usually try to have alot of fun playing, I still get very serious on the links. For starters, the student rate with a cart on Saturday at 10:30 is a very good deal. The pro shop people were pretty nice, while the starter on the other hand was pretty pissy that my buddy and I got to the tee right at our tee time (checked in like 30 minutes before) even though she didn't even call us. On to the course. I really am not a fan of the course layout here. It plays pretty easy in all honesty with very few challenges and while the rough can get pretty thick, the fairways had alot of roll on it today. There was maybe one dogleg hole and I didn't really feel challenged on any hole. On top of this, I counted probably 3-4 bunkers on the entire course total. While this may be nice to some, for me, I prefer a slight challenge from time to time instead of the same type of hole over an over again. The greens, like what many say, are very tough to read. Today the greens ran really fast, so putting was pretty difficult. The course is very nicely maintained, something I expected from the "Poor Man's Pebble", not too many freeway divots and while some greens were filled with leaves from the trees, the greens were nice as well. The scenery of the course (the trees, not the ocean) was very nice though. I enjoyed the woodland feel of a couple of the holes and the trees provided a very nice backdrop for some of the holes. Course Rating: 3/5 Now regarding the clientele. My friend and I are 19 years old and we haven't golfed for awhile, so we wanted to go out just to have a good time, however, this is not the kind of place to goof around that much. The other twosome we were set up with were elderly gentlemen who were quite unfriendly and after a few holes we just let them go ahead because they really were a terrible twosome to play with. They made alot of snotty remarks throughout the front 9 when we were behind them. I could understand this coming from a couple of very good golfers, but these guys shot alot worse than we did on the back 9 and when we both started playing really good golf, we ended up going much faster than them. The people behind us also were elderly gentlemen and were also unfriendly, even though we had no part in the course being backed up. The Marshall was continually on our ass for the front 9 which was pretty annoying, but as we talked to her she was very nice and kind of understood that we wanted to golf and have a good time at the same time. She left us alone after we landed a couple of very difficult shots on the front 9. The course was backed up and we had a 5 hour round, but this is something to expect from a public course on the weekends. I'd honestly only come back here on the weekdays to avoid the crowds of inconsiderate golfers. Clientele Rating: 1/5 I didn't eat here, so the food rating is N/A. The saving grace for this course, however, is the amazing views. Morro Bay is usually foggy or cloudy, but today it was roughly 90 degrees and not a single inch of fog or clouds in the sky. The views of the waterfront are spectacular and really that is the single best part about this course. I wouldn't call these views the best I've ever seen on a golf course, but definitely they are up there. Can't really go wrong when you are looking out at the waterfront. Scenery Rating: 5/5. Overall, I give this course a 3/5. For the price on a weekend it's a pretty solid price, although the cart fee ($17 per rider) is pretty outrageous, though courses around the area follow the same sort of standard. I would most likely return to this course hopefully looking for some friendlier foursomes, especially when it's backed up, but the view is fantastic and while the course offers no real challenges, I had a good time and the course is pretty well maintained for a public course and I would return sometime in the future most likely. read more

The golf course is beautiful however the customer service is terrible. My fiancé walked to the front desk to check in a couple minutes early. He was told to wait because the man at the desk was busy. My fiancé has a hearing disability so he asked the man to repeat himself. The man then yelled and walked away from the desk. We drove 3 hours to golf here because we were told it's a beautiful course. The course itself is beautiful but the rude service is not worth the gas money or the $60 to golf. read more

A really nice course with fantastic views. The ruff can cause serious difficulty and there are some fairways that slope and you have to play the slope, the fast greens that will require a few rounds before you understand and buy into the breaks. They will always break towards the nine sisters (the MB rocks) Putting towards the nine sisters will be extremely fast. Bottom line. .....whenever putting towards water it'll be fast!!!!!!! My only complaint is the staff at the restaurant; good food but the staff at the counter could use a lesson in customer service read more

We were visiting from out of town and saw a flier for a free mini walk to see a whole bunch of Monarch Butterflies. It's was totally amazing and educational! Josh, who led us and works for the state parks department really knew what he was talking about and has a true passion for nature. The tour happens every other Saturday and is well worth the visit. *also, I was worried this was some kind of bate and switch to join the golf course, but the golf course is actually owned by the state, so effectively it's a park open to anyone read more

Had a very disappointing experience here. I went with a few friends who are beginner golfers for a bachelor party, and we were pestered all day long. We were told after the third hole that there were groups behind us. We knew we were slower so we allowed several groups to pass us. The groups that passed us were actually far slower than us! We continued to be pestered by the marshall (not his fault, he was just doing his job) throughout the day. It happened at least 5 times in the first 9 holes. We decided to call it quits after the front 9, because we no longer felt comfortable or welcome at this establishment. I understand there is an accepted pace to golf, but as beginners we were doing our absolute best. To constantly be berated and looked down upon because we were not "up to par" was unacceptable. The worst part is, if we had continued to play on and not let groups go ahead of us, we were WELL ahead of the posted "pace of play" signs. read more

So beautiful here! Great views and well kept greens. My husband and I played the front 9 after having breakfast in Morro Bay. It started off overcast then soon warmed up. We walked the course too which was a nice way to burn off some calories. They have carts, a restaurant, shop and small driving range. Note: When you get to I believe it is hole 5 or 6 the driving range is close by so be on the lookout for balls! (Or bring a helmet) This course also has sister courses at Dairy Creek (SLO) and Chalk Mountain (Atascadero). We got a discount card which allows us to play any of the 3 with discount rates. I would suggest making reservations especially on weekends or holidays. If you are looking for an unpretentious yet beautiful course then look no further! read more

Great value, amazing Pacific Ocean views, tricky subtle greens everything you would want in a golf course. In August of 2018 The staff was beyond rude. Pro shop and the Marshall made this otherwise great destination a must avoid. We are experienced 50+ age 3some priding ourselves in golf etiquette which should not ruffle any feathers at any course. these guys are the epitome of whom not to hire in a business that deals with the public. This review is rather late review so please disregard it if the course has new staff. We were planning this years golf trip and we all joked how much we don't ever want to come back here again. After all the glowing reviews, what a huge disappointment! "Poor Mans Pebble???" It just goes to show you how absurd most of these reviews can be. If it's sunny and warm, there are worse places to be but for the GOLF experience, this place disappoints big time. The design of this course is terrible considering the beautiful land it's on. Back and forth fairways like a typical muni and you can be sure to be in harms way on several holes so watch out for the dangerous shank. A few holes stand out but the rest are forgettable with the back nine being the better nine. But it's basically a big park on a hill near the ocean with a few nice greens. Kikuya fairways and rough make for good flop shots but for delicate chips around the green, it will completely deaden your shot. Also the air under the kikuya rough and fairways will not allow you to compress the ball so either perfect the "scoop" or deal with hitting the ball high on the face all day. More foggy days than sunny days so chances are, you will not see the sun while out there. I will say the greens are in good shape and tricky to get the ball down. Lastly, was told by the Pro Shop that replays were free only to be harassed after making the attempt. Was made to feel like a criminal for trying. Driving range is small and faces uphill. Basically, this was not an agreeable golf experience for me and I will not return. Save your money for a real course and a well run Pro Shop, not a forgettable park-like muni with no real design aspects whatsover. Also, they have super duper kick ass tasty hot dogs, sliced, dressed up, and tucked into a toasted roll of some kind. That was a pleasant surprise. read more

I see a few negative reviews, and having played Morro Bay several times over the last few years, both in tournaments and casual rounds with friends, I have to believe that reviews have only been posted by unhappy people. I have always had a great experience when playing there. The views are beautiful, and the staff has always been great. You have to realize it is played by a lot of tourists, and play will be slower especially on the weekends. Price wise every other coarse I've played with comparable views has cost twice as much. So it is a good value. I'll continue to play Morro Bay when I'm in the area, and to the complainers, get a clue. If the Marshall in "on your butt" you are the problem. read more

Terrible golf experience! Our cart ran out of juice on the 5th hole, so I called the pro shop...the guy told me to leave the cart and walk! The attitude of the two kids working the pro shop was terrible. There were no 'adults' working! We had to demand a refund and finally got it and left. Turns out there were many carts dying on the course...very poor management. Also, they booked six people for the same tee time! We had the worst encounter with the starter on hole # 1. Not only did he call us Kawasaki, when our name is Takahashi. He was pissed because we didn't check in to him before our tee time. We weren't told to check in after paying our green fees. He kept yelling at us in front of appproximately 12 people, what a jerk.. Will never play here again despite the beautiful panoramic views. Don't let the short yardage fool you. True it is short, and the front 9 actually plays a little short (and isn't very difficult). But with the Kikuyu grass is like velco- which means you get almost no roll- and it is hard to really compress your irons. There are a couple of 300 yard par 4's on the front 9- and 3 shorter par 4s on the back- but most are uphill with either a cross or into the wind that makes them play more like 350. From the blue tees there are two 430 yard par 4s, and 2 par 3's are over 200 yards. I felt the back 9 played on the long side with me hitting a lot of 5 and 4 irons to the green- and a hybrid on 18 after decent drives. The best part of this is the setting and value. I paid $42 to walk and it was a spectacular day. The view is just amazing. It is also a nice course to take people who aren't good golfers- because there aren't any hazards to carry- and almost no sand traps. The challenges of the greens and rough won't affect them as much as better golfers. The greens are small- and almost impossible to read. True- every putt will break to the ocean- but ocean is on 2 sides. All the greens are built into the hill, so it looks like the putts will break uphill. If they were fast it could be a nightmare. The rough is difficult to chip out of- especially from the side. The drawback is- 13 is the only inspired hole. The rest are- OK. None of them are really bad, but nothing that you stand and think "Wow that is a great golf hole!" Fortunately none of the holes are really goofy either- so you won't think "Who the ---- designed that hole?" Also, because the course gets a lot of play- and from people who aren't golfers- the pace of play can be slow. Just over 5 hours for me. If you come here expecting a Trump Style golf course at muni rates- you will be disappointed because it was never meant for that. It is a nice golf course that can provide a good challenge to the good player, but not absurdly difficult and goofy for the bad player. And by the way- IT HAS AN AWESOME SETTING! read more

In the past year, MBGC has improved not only the course, but the pro shop and the people providing customer service. The restaurant has always offered affordable breakfast/lunch items before, during and after my round. This course really is a beautiful place to play golf. The course is kept in great shape year round and offers great views. I recommend it to anyone who lives in the area or comes here to visit. I have been playing Morro Bay for more than 25 years.I have always said that if I could only play one more round this is the place.The views are outstanding, condition always top notch.The course has changed over the years with the Removal of so many pines.It plays easier as of late, but the greens and weather are its best defender.As far as California golf goes its one of the best deals in the entire state.The course itself is good for low handicappers and high ones.They have four sets of tee boxes and playing the Blacks makes for a different round than the whites. I have hosted a tournament here for 25 years and I have dealt with golf pros, tournament directors and catering and have always had a great experience.This place should be on everyones bucket list of places to play golf! read more

We were staying at the Inn at Morro Bay across the street for my brother's wedding and decided to stop here for a beer or two (we greatly surpassed that). From what I saw, the golf course looked beautiful and would have been fun to golf on (I'm an amateur and felt comfortable enough to want to try golfing, but alas we didn't have time). We did, however, stop by the bar for some libations. What started as a pitcher of 805 and of the other one (I can't remember) turned into three pitchers of each and several rounds of Yukon Jack shots. It was a nice family bonding experience before the wedding, especially as we stumbled back to the hotel (cars safely stowed at the golf course). I would love to stop by again for a game and for a more accurate rating. Three stars because the bar wasn't bad and the view was great, I just didn't explore enough. read more
