I was last a customer at Morton Cleaners 20 years ago before I left for LA, and dropped off 12 of my best dress shirts with them a few days ago, having come back home with my tail between my legs. Twenty years ago, Morton was where I, my dad and grandpa took anything that meant something to us, so of course, the first place I go to when I'm back home is my family's default. That said, I have no idea why this establishment has so many negative reviews, because the shirts I picked up this morning haven't looked this good since I bought them. In fact, two of them had yellowed so badly over the years, I was floored when they came back looking pristine. The men of my family have long entrusted Morton with our clothes when the moment counted, and after decades, I see no reason why I shouldn't continue patronizing them. Alrighty then. (please note: star rating is not reflective of current business as I'm not a customer) My name is Brian Schlossberg My family started Morton Cleaners in 1932 (not 1950) My Grandparents, Isadore & Rose Schlossberg started Morton Cleaners in 1932 near Cicero & Belmont. The Irving Park Road location opened in 1942 upon the return of my Father, Martin Schlossberg from serving in WWII. Isadore (Papa Schloss or just "Schloss") was seldom seen by customers as he was usually in the back of the plant tirelessly mending garments on and old foot pump sewing machine. Rose spent time at the counter when she wasn't working a hot steam press in the back. She knew everybody's story and when meeting customers she aggressively asked questions such as "Are you married?', "How many children?", etc. She remembered all the details and shared everyone's joys and sorrows. She sweetened every conversation with plenty of "sweetheart"s, darling"s, and Yiddish expressions of endearment with a Polish accent. Marty worked 6 days a week and often arrived well before sunrise to start the steam boilers. The family business had no managers and Marty was usually opening and closing multiple stores each day. We were often sent ahead on family vacations while Marty stayed behind to run the biz. The business grew to multiple stores in the Chicago area with a fleet of delivery trucks. My Brothers Bruce, Barry and myself all worked in the business with our Father and both Grandparents along with a staff that was dedicated for decades, many of whom worked there long before I was born and seemed like family to us. During the early 60's I was the little kid that sat at the desk and smoked a cigar (pretzel stick) courtesy of 90+yo "Sam" who came in each day to present me my cigar. Customers would call me "The Boss". Morton was the cleaners for the Chicago Police & Fire Department uniforms and was also known for having huge war bond drives to support the effort in WWII. The cleaners offered garment long term cold storage and from that grew Morton Bridal which was started by Martin's late wife Maryann. Our seamstress Anita, Maryann and Grandma Rose would always make the brides-to-be feel special with plenty of oohs and awes. They always encouraged my Brothers and I to compliment how beautiful the Brides were in their gowns. Raymond Tomaczak was the lead dry cleaner and began at Morton at age 18 in the 40's. He continued working for the new owner after 1990. His retirement and whereabouts are unknown. Isadore passed away in 1975 and Rose followed in 1987. Maryann passed in 2004. In the late 60's permanent press made a huge impact on the dry cleaning industry and only 2 locations remained (Irving Pk Rd and Harlem & Lawrence Av) The Harlem location was eventually let go and in 1990 Martin & Maryann sold the Irving Pk Rd location to the current owner. They retired to Las Vegas where Marty still resides. I wanted to share some history and set some things straight. If you have any memories or stories of Morton Cleaners and/or it's staff members prior to 1990 to share, I'd love to pass them on to my Father. I have a custom made Irish Dance dress that they altered beautifully for my daughter. these dresses are serious money, this is the first place I have taken one of our dresses where they were able to correctly get the fit on my daughter and not mess up the dress fabric or design. I was so impressed with how she explained to me what she was going to do and it came out perfect. I recommend this place to anyone who has a custom, unique special order garment. read more

Morton Cleaners is a solid, but pricier business to take your dry cleaning. It specializes in wedding dress cleaning (half of the shop is wedding dresses). However, they do great dry cleaning, alterations (I had several pairs of jeans taken up and a new zipper placed in dress pants). They will provide a discount for paying in advance, which is a bonus time wise then you pick up your clothes. read more

My family and I have used them for many years and I have never had any problems with their service or quality. I have used other cleaners in the past after moving to different neighborhoods in Chicago, and have had mixed results (from shirts not coming back clean, to clothes not being returned at all, to hats completely ruined and "snuck" back to me to try to cover up their mistake, etc.). Incidents like this made me take extra time to drive out to Morton's, where I can consistently count on my clothes being cleaned, pressed, returned, repaired, etc., without worrying about any damage, incompetence or dishonesty. And to those reviewers who say that this place charges more, well you get what you pay for. I don't think this is prohibitively more expensive by any means. I pay them for a high quality service and to me, their prices are quite reasonable. read more

Never again will I come here! I brought in a comforter and a couple of jackets and all I got was excuses for why they couldn't do something or hesitation. ...and for the service, the price is SO not worth it. Brought daughter's Prom Dress to Morton Cleaners for hemming, just one thin layer to be shortened...took them a full week, and upon pickup, this brand-new dress now had three obvious snags right in the front! Upon telling the clerk and asking for a discount for the damage, her English suddenly failed and she demanded full payment. We said this would reflect in our online review and she said, now in clear English, that we could have a discount on dry cleaning when we brought the dress back, but we said we won't be returning. Also, the hem had many dangling threads that we had to trim ourselves. They previously mishandled hemming on a pair of shorts, too. read more

This is the absolute worst place I have ever been to. Atrocious customer service and absolutely no accountability for their work, damages to clothing (yep, and the woman in front me in line was also complaining about damaged garments) and a complete lack of integrity when it comes to getting the work done on time. I dropped off my wedding dress as well as 4-5 other dresses to be cleaned. They said the wedding dress would be done in 4 weeks. I came back about a week later to pick up the rest of the dresses. 2 weeks later I came back to get my wedding dress. Not done. Was told to come back in a week. Came back a second time, not done again. Could they not pick up the phone to tell a customer not to make a trip in? Additionally, two of my dresses from the original drop off were damaged. They were actually melted together. When I brought them in, the woman working the counter immediately and without hesitation said that would never have happened here, and that I must have left them in the car, where they melted together. Then claimed to be looking at a picture on her computer and insisted that I never even brought them in to be cleaned. That I must have taken them somewhere else. Further more, I asked to be refunded and to be given my wedding dress uncleaned since they obviously do not have the time to do it. She refused both, said she cannot make a refund without the owner who will not be in until Monday, and that I have to come back then. I have 2 ruined dresses, no wedding dress and absolutely no reimbursements for anything. This place is a complete joke. Don't waste your time or money. Absolutely the worst dry cleaning service I have ever used. They ruined three sweaters. Two were expensive cashmere sweaters...when I picked them up, they were about two sizes smaller than when I dropped them off. The other one wasn't cashmere, but it had shrunk at least a size as well. That's a few hundred dollars worth of ruined clothing that I now will have to replace. We have obviously changed dry cleaners and will never return to Morton Cleaners. read more

I live in a Condo with a drop off laundry service that ship our dry cleaning to Morton's in Irving Park. I had a suit jacket..a pricey item, dry cleaned there. The suit jacket came back with a stain on the sleeve . I sent it back for a redo and it looks like they took a wire brush to the fabric.. very noticeable. They blame their mistakes on the quality your material. My husband works downtown and has to wear a suit everyday he is very particular on quality and appearance. When I contacted Ms Kim the owner she was rude. She would not let me talk ,said they got the stain out and no one would notice the damaged sleeve but me because I know its there. Ms Kim stated she would do nothing about the problem and hung up on me. read more

I've been going to Morton's for 8 years, but today was the last time I'll set foot in the place. My Calvin Klein green silk blouse is ruined. There is a ink pen mark on the breast pocket that was not there when I brought it in. They offered to try to stain remove it, but I frankly was done with them. It is very clear the mark was put on after it was dry cleaned. read more

There used to be a 10% discount if you pay in advance. That has gone away. Very disappointing!

This place gets the job done well~! I'm a very petite woman and I needed to take in a size 12 wedding dress to a size 1!!!! They did a wonderful job and....I was a bridezilla with a pole way up my bottom! I approve completely. My husband now takes all his suit alterations there because we just won't trust anyone else. One thing we're learning to appreciate is (and maybe this is thanks to Elizabeth A.) but they call us if they have any questions. I don't know about you, but honesty and anal cautious dry cleaning is two thumbs up for me! The discount price is sooooo worth it! read more

Quality of dry cleaning is superb. This is the first place I've ever taken my dry cleaning where they clip the sleeves of your shirts to keep them straightened and unwrinkled. (I'm really particular about the "crispness" of my dress shirts for work... I like that they do this.) I've also had several pairs of pants and dress shirts altered here. Those have always been done very precisely at a reasonable price. One word of advice, if you pre-pay, they give you a discounted price so if you choose to come here it'd be worth it to take advantage of that. read more

I got my bridesmaid dress altered here...they took it from a size 4 to a 2 and it looks perfect!! The lady did a great job and I'm very happy with it. The location is convienient and the staff was friendly...She charged me $50 since it was a double seam (at first she told me $80 but I used my bargaining skills :) which is pretty good for a bridesmaid dress....I definitly recommend coming here for alterations!!!! I brought my wedding dress here to be steamed on Monday 11/5 (didn't need cleaning because its a brand new dress) and i said i need it by Thursday 11/8. My wedding is Saturday 11/10. They said no problem because they only needed two days to steam the dress and that gave them three days. I come back Thursday evening late (6pm) and they tell me the dress ISN'T done! I ask why because they said they neded two days and they had three. They said that "we had it out to steam and we forgot about it because we got so busy and then a problem came up." I was mad....obviously. You don't forget about a clients WEDDING DRESS! I let it be known that i was mad and very unhappy. I told them I wanted it done ASAP...they said they couldnt do it to be done that night by 7pm when they closed but they could have it ready the next day Friday 11/9 by 7am. So I come in Friday (today) and they said the wedding dress was done. So i ask to look at the dress. As soon as i open the bag I see unsteamed wrinkles!! The least they could have done for an unhappy customer is make sure the dress looked perfect! So the owner took it in the back to touch it up and take out the wrinkles as I sit here in their store writing this review. I came to this cleaners for my wedding dress because apparently they specialize in wedding and formal clothes. I also came on high recommendation. Safe to say I won't be coming back. read more

no stars! worst cleaners ever! they were supposed to clean my pelle jacket, but when i picked up my jacket it was extremely damaged!! and to make matters even worse ms kim said that there was nothing that she could do for me!! really! on there business cards they claim to be "chicago's largest wedding gowns & formal cleaners"... would it have "hurt" the "largest" cleaners to do the right thing and replace/compensate me for a beautiful jacket that your cleaners ruined.......... unbelievalbe read more

I will never go there again! It was my biggest mistake to take my wedding gown for alterations to Morton Cleaners. It took them forever to figure out how to fix my dress after they screw it all up. I went there at least six time and finally decided to just take my gown as far from them as I can. When i went for a final fitting the dress was dirty and didn't fit me at all. It was too tight in my breast area and the waist that was too loose in the first place wasn't even touched. I asked them to fix it. Well, they just did the opposite. Made the breast area loose and waist super tight. I gave them couple more chances, but they kept doing the same thing... They were really unpleasant. They told me that it was my fault that the dress was dirty because i tried it on (hm i guess i was suppose to clean the fitting room before I wore the dress). The problem with dress not fitting me according to them was my fault again (of course.. I kept loosing and gaining weight every week I went for the next fitting. Why wouldn't I? i just wanted to make them miserable and didn't want my dress to be ready). So if u want to make your life more stressful as it could be before the wedding just use Morton Cleaners to alter your perfect wedding gown ;] And I almost forgot they pressed it too and guess what it had wrinkles all over! read more
