The customer service that I consistently received was horrid. Absolutely no follow-through. Never received an estimate or any worthwhile design ideas except for a suggestion to do the precise thing that I clearly stated that I did not want to do. Not listening to potential customers is definitely not the way to make a business thrive, and in speaking to others in the local community,I was advised never to do business with Moss. Moss Building & Design is unethical and fraudulent. Do not contract with them. We retained Moss to do two projects, one called the "interior" or "beam" project and the other for the master bathroom. As to the interior/beam project, the first thing they did was to open a portion of a wall and install a new cross beam. We noticed immediately when we returned home that day (and it cannot be disputed) that the subcontractor did not frame the load bearing wall according to our plans. Instead of having the new load bearing steel beam flush with the ceiling, they had it about 3.5 feet below the ceiling. More important, it also cannot be disputed that one of the two support columns is over a gap in the foundation where there is a pass through to our crawl space. Fairfax County Code and Development Compliance recommended three possible alterations to deal with the fact that the column was over the gap. The inspector said we could (1) get a longer beam, (2) put in additional headers in the crawlspace to distribute the weight across the gap, or support the column by placing a short column in the gap and cutting a new pass through. In addition, the inspector noted that the other support column was improperly constructed and blocking was not installed in the crawl space below the column. (Of course, blocking could not have been placed under one column anyway since it was over the gap in the foundation). They also did not put up a temporary wall to support the upper levels of the house during the time they installed the new beam. At the same time, they had ordered the wrong cabinets for the bathroom. In addition, on the first day of the bathroom project, the worker broke a pipe when altering the plumbing to the bathtub and there is now water damage on the ceiling of the family room below the master bath. We learned that this young man is not a licensed plumber. For these reasons, among others, at this point we had lost all faith in their structural work and decided we couldn't take the chance of having them restart the interior/beam project. Consequently, we terminated the interior project. We then asked them to tally up the costs to date so that we could reconcile them with our payments to date. After about three or four weeks they agreed to give us the costs and indicated that they would tack on a 30-40% markup as the general contractor. Even though we understand that the industry standard is 20% (10% for overhead and 10% for profit), we agreed to their markup. The "costs" they gave us, however, were grossly inflated. For example, the first line item is for a gas fireplace that they purportedly had already ordered. There was an allowance of $3,986.89 for the fireplace in the contract, which would equate to $5,581.64 with a 40% markup. However, the total cost they gave us for the fireplace was $6,891.25. Once we saw the fireplace discrepancy, we began to question the other line items. The first thing we did was to obtain the actual invoice from the Sheets lumber yard for the next line item, which was the steel beam used in the framing. That invoice shows $568.25, which would be $795.55 after a 40% markup. The line item on the original worksheet they gave to us had $1,114 for the steel beam. At this point, it was clear that the original costs they gave us were grossly inflated and were not even remotely based on actual costs. We then asked for another meeting to go over the costs because we didn't believe any of them. They finally agreed to meet. At that meeting, we called them out on the overcharges. We had to show the project manager the receipt from Sheets before he would acknowledge the fraud. The project manager then spent well over an hour trying to figure out the actual costs while sitting at our kitchen table. For the line item for plumbing the gas line for the new fireplace he had to call the plumber to get an invoice. Given that fact, how was the original cost for the fireplace gas line calculated? The representative also said that the fireplace was delivered to our house, but I pointed out to him that clearly it was not. Then suddenly the general contractor markup jumped to 45%. Ultimately, they ended up sending us revised costs, which removed the fireplace and were significantly below the original fraudulent amounts for the remaining items. We agreed to pay that amount just to be able to change contractors and move on with the interior/beam project. We had our home disrupted for months at this point and no work had been done on the bathroom for a month. We had agreed that we would cut a check for next payment due for the bathroom, minus the amount we had over paid for the interior project, so they could resume work on the bathroom. We said we could give that check to the worker on the day he resumed the bathroom project. Rather than simply taking the check and moving on, they took the check and cancelled the bathroom contract! read more

After I left three messages, they finally called me back and kept me waiting for six minutes while they presumably checked their calendar (couldn't they have done that prior to calling?), only to tell me they didn't have availability to give me an estimate for a month. It looks like business is good enough for them that they don't have to take every lead seriously. read more

Moss Construction remodeled our entire 1st floor in 2017 including an main floor addition. We could not be happier with the finished product. We have worked with many contractors over the years. In considering an addition we wanted to work with the best to ensure it was done properly and warrantied. The project included moving walls and windows to enlarge our kitchen, create a 1st floor laundryroom, an office and a parlor. No one can recognize our house it looks so good. Moss's attention to detail was by far the best we have experienced. And we loved how we had a wide selection of materials we could work with. Moss dealt well with our multiple design revisions and our demanding cabinet design requirements. We would highly recommend Moss to anyone who is remodeling and wants to make sure the job is done right. read more

We were having electrical problems ever since we bought our house. Mainly outlets that would mysteriously stop working, buzzing from our electrical panel. All said it needed to be replaced but couldn't give me a great explanation as to why - other than it was old. I called Moss over and the electrician very clearly explained that sometimes the breakers would try to connect to the bus in the panel and could not connect because they were loose (and old) and that was causing the buzzing in the panel. So not only could they explain what the issue was, but also the cost for replacing the panel was about half of what other electricians wanted. I have to say I feel like I finally found a company I can go to for anything that needs to be fixed in the house - big or small. I had my electrical panel replaced and they came out quickly, on time and finished on time. They offer home services beyond just renovations and I will be calling them again. read more

We had been considering a kitchen remodel for years, but trying to figure out how to remove an unsightly bulkhead running through our kitchen always got in the way. Moss came up with a solution and oversaw a new HVAC system installation. Moss kitchen designer, Erin Hoopes, guided us through the process of choosing appliances, cabinets, fixtures and countertops and her expertise is apparent when you look at our completed kitchen -- IT'S BEAUTIFUL. Our project manager, Marty Fletcher, was always very responsive to any questions we had and very accommodating when it came to changes we wanted to make. Marty always made us feel that our satisfaction was his number one priority. Terry and Lonnie did a fantastic job with the day-to-day work and their attention to detail was incredible. They cleaned up each day before they left, which meant a great deal to us, as we have kids and a dog. Speaking of our dog, the guys even took great care of our dog! Greg Ivie, the electrician, is the best you could ask for. He did so much wiring (including a new electric panel) and installed so many lights, fixtures, appliances, outlets and switches and it was all done perfectly. His knowledge of his trade is impressive. He even worked through one weekend when we were going to be out of the house so he could minimize the time the power would be off while we were home. Review Update A housefull of guests gave our remodeled guest bath it first true test and it wasnt pretty. After the first extended use, we found water gushing from fixtures in the kitchen ceiling directly below the bath. We shut off the water valves to the toilet and sink and I sent our Project Manager a text and photo describing the problem. In less than an hour, the PM and the original subcontractor came to the house. They quickly diagnosed a split PVC nut on the sink drain trap. The sub made the necessary repairs and cleaned up the mess. And they were done and gone in 60 minutes. After the problems we had on the basic project I was concerned how the "lifetime warranty" would work. Well it worked great. The Moss PM and the sub were prompt and professional. Exactly what we needed to salvage the weekend with our guests. read more

We used Moss for a major kitchen renovation, a small bump out, had multiple interior walls moved, and added a powder room (no basement, so had to tie plumbing within the slab). We met with a number of different companies before choosing Moss... some smaller shops, some with more glitz, some spent more creative time with us before giving us an estimate, some much less. We did consider that two neighbors had used Moss for large projects and were happy overall, but in the end Moss just felt like the best fit for us, and Jessica (sales rep) did a great job. We opted for their "Design Forward" plan, which doesn't really cost more, but you pay more upfront and enter into a more thorough and extensive design process to get a more accurate estimate before signing a construction contract. Going into this I cemented these facts into my mind: unexpected *stuff* was going to happen, it was probably going to cost more than was estimated, and it was probably going to take longer than was estimated. With this in mind, and with the acknowledgement that we were very lucky to be in the position to undertake this project, I committed to no complaining. I'm proud to say that I did pretty darn well with that goal, AND that this perspective helped to make the whole experience darn close to enjoyable. I highly recommend this perspective to anyone getting ready to have their house torn apart! Moss is not cheap, but having a knowledgable and professional PM who headed problems off at the pass, had the best people working in our house, and truly cared that we were happy with the finished product was worth it... especially given the scope of our project. If you go the Design Forward route, it takes quite a while. You will meet with the designer a number of times with stretches of time between meetings when they make changes (to multiple programs, as I recall). When you meet with them they use a program that produces a computer rendering - very cool - and will make changes while you are there, but even tweaking the angle of a counter or width of a cabinet is pretty labor intensive, so sometimes you don't make as much progress as you think you will. Our Moss team get's an A+. We were extremely happy with all the folks we worked with throughout our project. From the salesperson (previously mentioned) to the designer (Kristen), to the architect (Chris), to our three - yes three - different project managers, and the multitude of Moss employees (especially the wonderful John and Dean team) and sub contractors who spent so much time in our home. As for the first two project managers, one left after many years with the company to work closer to home so he could have more time with his family, and the second left as he was offered a significant promotion with another company - can't blame either of them! I will say that with each transition there was some lag time as the new project manager got caught up, but *stuff* does happen and thankfully Bob Keene was our third time's a charm PM! Bob has been with the company for years; he knows the business, knows who does the best work, is a great communicator, and truly works for YOU. On top of all that he is a good man. Believe it or not, I genuinely missed (and still miss!) getting my daily dose of John, Dean, and Bob; I will forever be especially grateful for the hard work and care that they put into making our project feel like home, and for making my family and me feel like much more than customers. A couple of things that come to mind that Moss could improve: Moss has a relationship with Ferguson's and directs its clients there for appliances, etc. Although Ferguson's has a solid reputation and likely works seamlessly with Moss on installation, we were less than impressed with the salesperson and the way we received the pricing (very confusing). We ended up going to Bray and Scarff in Tyson's on our own (HUGE shout out to our salesman, Kory Clemons!) and were very happy. Our PM did his best to be ready for installation, but the processes was a little more work for him than it would have been had we used Ferguson's, but Bob came through for us! Although the Design Forward plan ended up coming up pretty on target, there were a number of choices we made early in the design process that ended up coming in significantly over or under the allowance budget, and we didn't know this until the items were close to being delivered. There is no doubt that someone with experience could have looked at the contract and realized that, for example, the tile allowance would be $1000 short. It's surprising to me that Moss doesn't have their PMs review contracts before they are presented to customers, especially because the PMs are charged with letting the customer know that there is an issue. That said, the final result get's an A+. We love everything about the changes to our home, and the quality of the work is truly impressive. Overall, we were very pleased with the work they did on finishing our basement (partial). The quality of the worksmanship is excellent (this was done 3+ years ago and the place still looks excellent). They worked with us to maximize the space and minimize any of the necessary "intrusions" (such as discreetly boxing in foundation elements of the home). They are on the pricey side, compared to some of the other places we saw, but the work overall was worth it. read more

We are very pleased with the three major projects completed by Moss Building and Design over the past few years. Consistently, they have been honest, fair, responsive, careful professionals. They completed the projects on time, and were committed to doing a great job and meeting our expectations. Our first project was completed in 2014. It involved replacement of wood siding, installation of new windows and two skylights and the replacement of gutters, downspouts, scuppers and coping. The work was done carefully, thoughtfully and on time. The next project, about a year later, was a complete kitchen renovation that included expansion into the living room, replacement of those windows that were not replaced as part of the initial project, and overhaul of a guest bedroom. When they were just about to start, we had a leak in the basement. The project manager, Dave Keys, immediately arranged for a plumber to come over to find and repair the leak, which had absolutely nothing to do with the other work they were doing. Moss helped us find and select beautiful wood cabinetry, bamboo floor, quartz countertops and a tile backsplash. Unexpected challenges were quickly resolved largely due to Dave's positive and creative approach. For example, the existing door opening was too small for our new refrigerator but Dave found a way to widen the masonry opening without having to rebuild the wall. There were other surprises concealed by the walls, ceilings and floors, all of which were addressed without causing unnecessary pain. Whatever needed to get done got done. No excuses. We remain very happy with the kitchen 3 years later. The third project, in 2018, was the remodeling of two bathrooms, the laundry room and a basement bedroom. We had selected a wall tile with an unusual and irregular pattern for the first floor shower walls, with a smaller matching tile for the floor. We expected the pattern on the wall to be random, but the Moss tilers laid out the tiles on the floor, carefully lining up the patterns before deciding where to install each tile. The finished product was much nicer than we expected. It is not every day that you find a contractor who listens as carefully as Moss, explains different ways to solve problems if doing exactly what you want is not realistic, and follows through on time and on budget. Moss also prepared well (putting up dust barriers) and cleaned up carefully. I have had Moss come to my home on numerous occasions and highly recommend the company and their employees! The first job they did for us was in 2012 we had them install a whole house generator (a huge piece of mind). Since then we have had them do various other handyman items around the house- replace attic stairs, add a security light outside, replace our large front bay window, install crown molding and build a 6' fence. We most recently renovated our Master Bathroom and we couldn't be happier with the way it turned out (and stayed on budget). From the design process all the way through to completion everyone I dealt with was quick to respond, knowledgeable, and polite. Lisa was our designer and had a great eye for detail- she did a great job listening to what I was envisioning and her suggestions of how to accomplish that while adding personal touches were fantastic! Brady did our plumbing and Steve was our tile guy- both men were courteous, knowledgeable and I felt very comfortable with them in our house (I had no problem leaving them a key and taking off for a while!) and around my two young children. Amateur hour. Where to begin -- the cost overruns, the lack of communication from the project manager, the installation of the wrong granite in one bathroom, the multiple days where no one showed up to work without any communication, or the fact our two small bathrooms were supposed to be completed by Thanksgiving but I wrote the final check after Valentine's Day? They get one star because the final product actually looks nice, but I attribute that to the quality of the subcontractors they brought in -- all professional, skilled and hard-working. But what a nightmare as a project. Just about everything is an upcharge (don't for a minute think your quoted estimate will be anywhere near your final price). Final cost was way higher than we anticipated. Moss Online (their software communication method) is complicated and difficult to use. We had one set rule from the outset -- no work starting before 9:00 am so we could get our kids out the door for school. Lost track of doorbell rings between 8:00 - 8:30 am. At least ten times. Even after I communicated this again several times to the project manager. They installed the wrong granite in one bathroom and then we spent like two weeks sorting this out with counter-accusations. Many days no one would show up and this happened for multiple days and on multiple occasions. Had to constantly call/email/text the project manager frequently to see what was going on and why no one showed up that day. Project was almost three months over schedule and this was a simple powder room with no bath/shower and one average size bathroom. We had to purchase our own bathroom mirrors and deal with Dulles Glass directly for selection of the shower glass and installation. First and last project with Moss. We had Case Design do our master bathroom and would definitely recommend Case Design over Moss. Way more professional, timely and within budget. read more

At about the 80% mark in a major home renovation project with MOSS, I have been impressed with and grateful for the clear communication, progress updates, and amazing work by the whole team. I have an 100+ year old house, and was braced for major price changes and scares after the work started. But, I think the very thorough discovery process MOSS did as part of the estimating phase provided a very picture of what to expect and I've had NO surprises. This has been a huge relief (and has allowed me to add a few additional updates to my house, since my reserve budget was spared!). The project started just a couple weeks before COVID-19 became a household word and shelter-in-place began. I had already planned to move out of my house for part of the construction, but changed course to stay out for a longer period. MOSS has been able to stick to the schedule and continue work throughout this time and has made extra efforts to ensure my home, the MOSS team, and I all stay safe during this process. JP, the onsite project manager, has been key to this working so well. He's amazing at keeping me up to date, shares photos and does FaceTime walk throughs with me to keep me up to date and to get my instant feedback where decisions need to be made. It took me almost 20 years to get in a place where I could do this project, and I couldn't be happier with how it's going. I think the timing is somehow perfect. We are wrapping up a second floor addition with Moss. Their quote was reasonable, and their commitment to customer service throughout the process was excellent. I really appreciated how they remained open and willing to work with us throughout the process on changes and different ideas as construction went on. My goal is writing this review is to fully offer my highest recommendation for Moss Building & Design - if you are not convinced, then it's a reflection of my writing, not Moss. We hired Moss to finish our basement. My wife and I had a grand design of a true family space - media area, play area for our young children, a sports bar, powder room, gym, and open up a walk up to the backyard. By the time we engaged Moss, we had met with other builders and felt comfortable with our design. After a false start with another contractor, we selected Moss to carry out our vision. The construction industry has a well-deserved bad reputation, and prior to Moss it was easy to see why - other contractors missed appointments, provided us with bids that were so high compared to others I think they thought we were "marks" or bait & switched their contract pricing. There will almost always be issued with any construction project; they are practically unavoidable. The issue however is not what goes wrong, but how it handled and addressed? In this area, Moss (and specifically our PM, Bryon, was superb. Any minor item (we were fortunate to not have any major issues at all) was always addressed timely and to our satisfaction, even things that were our fault. Moss works clean too - the entrance way from our front door to our basement was always covered in plastic and each night they left our house in great condition. Everyone, and I mean everyone we dealt with was a total pro - from our Customer Care Manager Jodi to the Project Manager Bryon and all of the craftsmen who worked on our project were simply amazing. Specifically, here are some of the things that highlight the type of people you get with Moss: In installing additional switches, Blake moved the one for the furnace and air conditioning so it would not be turned off accidentally We had a ceiling fan and light installed in the gym, and the switch had labels for "fan" and "light" - just a detail others may not have done There would have been a loss of space under the stairs, except Jeremy suggested putting in a storage door to makes it accessible I selected a faucet for the bar and later wasn't sure I liked it, and Bryon told me anytime I wanted to switch it, he would do it for me Our kitchen garbage disposal was not working properly and Danny fixed it in 2 min (completely unrelated to our project, so he went over and above the job) Our yard was badly torn up from the walk up installation and Bryon insisted on making it right, despite clear language in the contract they were not responsible One shelf in the bar area sagged a little bit, and Jodi insisted on having it fixed. This was 6 months after the job! Bottom line, my family and I have the basement of our dreams and the project could not have gone any better. Learn from my mistakes - call Moss Building & Design first, and you will not be disappointed! read more

This company is an absolute disgrace. It's exactly why people don't trust construction companies. My wife and I got an estimate for doing a garage addition and basement renovation with Moss back in November. Lisa Ladson was our person of contact who came over and gave us an estimate. We explained to her in detail what we wanted, and it seemed like we were on the same page. We received a price quote of $120k to build a full new garage, convert our old garage into liveable space, renovate/open our basement, and convert our half bath into a full bath. We met with several other companies who said it would cost $150k to do what we want, or $120k to build a half garage extension. We were a little skeptical of Moss' price and asked Lisa how her deal is so much better than everyone else's. She said Moss is just better than everybody and they do a lot more volume of business so you get better deals with vendors. She said sometimes you just have to take the plunge and dive in, so that's what we did. Everything seemed fine until the architects showed up. We were assigned John and Marylin Burroughs. From the outset, they were not on the same page with what Lisa, my wife, and I discussed. Their initial drawings weren't even close to what we wanted. When they came back and designed what we wanted, our price jumped up to $131k from $120k. That's absolutely ridiculous. Total bate and switch. Lisa tried to tell us there were certain things not in the original plan that were since added, but we"know" we discussed what we wanted with her. Things such as flooring in our storage room and flooring in our redone laundry room. The laundry room was especially discussed because we talked about possible asbestos under the current floor. We told Lisa $120k was our max, and yet the price went up 11k, and they haven't even broken ground yet. What's going to happen when you do break ground? Besides the financial concerns, once we gave our deposit of 17.5k, it's as if we stopped existing. Valerie Irons was supposed to be involved in our project after 48 hours of signing the contract. That was on Nov 15. 9 days went by, we heard nothing. We emailed Lisa back, where's Valerie? Finally, we got a response from her. Valerie apologized for not getting in touch. She told us who our architects were, and we didn't hear from her again Two more weeks went by, we hadn't heard from the architects. I had to google John Burroughs just to find his contact info. They finally met with us on Dec 10. They said they would have drawings in 3 weeks, then said they would have them the first week of Jan. The 6th of Jan came, still nothing. So we emailed Lisa again, and she said they "just" got them and were going in for final review. Then we had to start all over again because the architects weren't close to what we discussed. At this point we were fed up. While David, the COO, got involved and tried to assure us everything would be ok and to please give them another chance, the damage was done. We lost their trust. We got most of our deposit back accept for the architects fees, but that's ok cause we used those plans, which were now ours, with another vendor and got the job done. Some months later, I got a random call from David asking if I could be part of a conference call with their big whigs because they'd been having a lot of complaints lately, and they wanted to hear my story. That's all you need to know right there. It makes things very difficult to choose a vendor when you can't trust them. You end up like us. We finally got our project done with someone else, but 6 months of our lives past that we'll never get back. read more

My husband and I tend to 'do-it-ourselves' but some things we can't, or shouldn't, do anymore. Our biggest fear when we considered handyman services for our portico repair, was becoming victims of some flaky fly-by-night operation. We wanted to get 3 estimates for this project, and Moss was the only one that came out immediately, and provided an estimate the day after Nathan came to look at the damage. The others took several days to send their proposals, which were not very clear in the details. Not only was the Moss estimate in the mid-price range and reasonable, but it was a very professional and detailed proposal. At ALL times I felt that Moss staff were available and responsive to my requests and inquiries. I highly recommend Moss Home Services to anyone who values professional, reliable, follow-through at a reasonable price. read more

We used Moss Handyman Services and couldn't be happier. For our project - creating a fireplace mantle - they sent us Dolan. He could not have been nicer, was good with my kids and pets, and knows his stuff. He completed the project in about 8 hours - including the time it took for him to get some of the materials for the project (we had not planned it in advance, it would take less time if we had. Our fault!). He was very polite and helpful, and cleaned up afterwards. We liked him so much that we've already referred him to friends. They were great to work with - I highly recommend! read more

They did a great job with our new bathroom! It is an accessible bathroom we built for a family member with disabilities. They provided weekly summary of the construction progress. And I was able to communicate with the project manager, Travis as I needed to. He took care of all the items we asked about. In fact, he inspected the tile work done by the sub and had them re-do it all over even if we did not notice any problem with the earlier work. Great communication and great customer service. I am hoping we can come up with the finance to do the basement soon and have them do it for us again. read more

Unfortunately my experience with Moss was much different than most others. They more than doubled the cost in the final bill without any warning or change orders sent to me to approve. I told them to cut off the budget when they provided a revised estimate in the last stage of the work, and then they jacked up the costs again -- by 2x!. The scope of the work never changed. They will not meet me half way or deposit my attempted payment for the amount I was told I would owe, and are threatening to send me to collections. Just an awful experience. read more

If I could give them no stars I would. After posting my first review of Moss, I received a phone call from Bob- he was very pleasant and asked the particulars about my displeasure with the tile they had installed. He agreed that the tile was not installed properly, wanted to know how much the new floor was going to cost, and felt there should be compensation from the company. He advised that he could not make a decision on what that compensation should be, but that he would get back with me, after several days, he called back and offered a "handyman for the day".... And said that was worth about $1000. I explained I don't need a handyman for the day, and if it was worth $1000, than give me the money instead. Of course, he needed to consult with someone else, so he suggested having that person contact me. Several days later, I received a phone call from Paul. Paul insisted that customer service was very important to them and that a handyman was usually acceptable to most people. I once again explained that a handyman was not needed. He said he would get back with me.....that was over a week ago. After years of weighing out whether to love our house or list it, we decided to remodel it, so we could love it and stay in it. We interviewed several design and build companies and ended up choosing Moss Building and Design. We demo'd our old kitchen, removed a load bearing wall that separated our living room and family room to create a great room, had a removable bannister and hand rail made for the stairs leading to the third floor, updated a half bath and had exotic hardwood floors installed on the entire main level. Moss worked tirelessly with us to iron out the designs after several concepts and ensure it would work with the rest of the house and achieve our goals. We had a great team of people assigned to us, all dedicated a lot of time to giving us our dream house. We had the pleasure of starting out with a great kitchen designer, Deanna LLewelyn, who had incredible patience and was always so considerate of our ideas and change orders. Once the cabinets were ordered our incredible Project Manager, Bob Keene, took over, planning the scheduled and lining up his team, ordering all the supplies needed. He brought in structural engineers, electricians and plumbers when needed and served as our 'quarterback' from day one. Orchestrating a great game keeping most issues transparent to us unless a critical decision was needed. He gracefully accepted our answers, even if they weren't the right ones. Bob defines what great customer service should be. He gained our trust immediately, assuring us he would always take care of anything we needed...before, during and after the project was complete. That he did and continues to do! I think the only negative part of having this gorgeous remodel complete, is that we don't get to see sweet Bob every morning...we miss him and our dog is in mourning that she doesn't get her daily belly rubs, kisses and morning greetings from him ! We had the same guy, Dave, working daily on the house for the most part, with specialists brought in when the Project Manager deemed it necessary. We loved that he showed up on time every day and that we could completely trust him in our home when we weren't here. He was great with carpentry, electrical and plumbing. He also became our painter and tile installer. While he was capable of doing all, we think he was stretched quite a bit to be the jack of all trades everyday. But he did so without complaining. The one area of improvement would be to have more then one person work on a home - use a larger team - have a painting crew, a tile crew, a demo/carpentry crew and electrical crew instead of having one person try to be an expert in every area. It would be ideal if you rotated the crews (once the demo team is done, have the electricians/plumbers come in, carpentry team next, painters next, tile and countertops next and flooring In the end ) or have specialist from each area comprise a team (like your red, gold and blue teams would each have a carpenter, a painter, an electrician, a plumber, a tile and counter guy and a floor guy) - which I know is hard to do, it would save a lot of re-do's, money and time for all involved. We follow Moss on their Facebook and Instagram and have enjoyed many of their events...becoming true fans. They give a great deal back to the community, not just by sponsoring little league teams, but by hosting free workshops with handyman tips, and to show off their latest technologies. It's refreshing to see a company invest so much money in a great business model, giving back to the community and their customers with great incentives to inspire. I think what we liked the most about Moss is that they truly care about their customer's satisfaction. They listen. They take action and they back up their work and the products. There are no smokescreens or games. Everything is upfront. They have a wonderful online tool designed just for Moss and their customers. You can log on anytime from your laptop, tablet or cell phone and know what your account balance is, if there are any change orders to accept or reject, contact information for every single person on your project, view your project schedule and more. I found that to be extremely helpful. I can see how it helps both Moss and the customer stay on schedule and on top of things. While we didn't quite get the free cleaning service or handyman to hang things on our wall upon completion as others mention (but that would have been heavenly), we felt we got more then what we had asked for and feel really grateful and very happy that we chose Moss. They started and finished our project on time and a little under budget, which is amazing considering the many change orders we gave them. I feel like I'm sitting in a beautiful vacation home in Vail, CO when I'm really just sitting here in my new Great Room loving my new home :) Thanks, Moss! It's been four business days since Greg G. told me he would discuss my situation with his management team. No call back. Par for the course with this company. My project inquiry started in March. It is the end of July. My problem: needed a tile repair, grout re-done and shower re-sealed, I thought. After waiting six weeks in the beginning just to get someone to give me a recommendation about what to do, it took another month and a half of meeting with three different people (2 of whom were architects?) who came to look and told me something different than the person before. By mid-May we had settled on a course of action, which was repair rather than renovate. It took until mid-June for the handyman to come out and do the repairs. Sean was perfectly nice and professional, but apparently created a new problem when he came to do the work. We discovered water dripping through to our ceiling below after he supposedly sealed everything up. The reaction to my call was aloof and unhelpful. Before Moss came to do the work, I could use my shower with a curtain. Now I can't use it at all because we have no idea where the leak is. Avoid aggravation and steer clear of Moss. read more

This is an update to my previous review, which, even though Yelp hid it, encouraged Moss to reach out to me and make things right. Matt came out--unlike the original project manager--and reviewed the work that was done, found it lacking, and sent out people to fix it. I'm very pleased with Matt's responsiveness--though puzzled by Yelp's burying the review so it wasn't even listed--and I give Matt 5 stars. I've changed my rating of Moss from one star to three. As much as I'd like to give them four, I still feel that the shoddy project management and the extraordinary amount of time the original project took is something that Yelp users should take into consideration. I had Moss do a variety of work for me over several days, including wood rot repair, painting, plumbing, and installation of ceiling fans, and all of the work was done in an efficient and professional manner. I was very happy with the workers, who were very knowledgeable, and always on time. One of them, who I asked to install a ceiling fan, knew immediately how to get the job done, whereas I had previously had another person from another handyman service tell me that the particular fan could not be installed in that location. Hands down one of the best contractors in the area. Stan came out ON time to put in an electrical outlet for my back yard patio. During the installation a minor hiccup came up. He was able to problem-solve ON-site and within the quote that was originally given. I would use them again!!! read more

We had Moss completely redo our basement early in 2018 and our experience was excellent. They took our half-finished basement and turned it into a new Family room with storage closets, den/office, bathroom, mud room and laundry room. Moss was competitive in price although came in slightly higher than some of the smaller contractors we also got quotes from. Damon worked with us on our price target and negotiated some smaller jobs into the contract as well as some terms I wanted to protect us from any big hidden costs or extreme time delays. Our project manager, Dave was reachable for questions after/before normal business hours and communicated with us with each phase we entered, also providing options/workarounds to consider at decision points. Our Designer, was able to save us money when it came to our fixtures (without sacrificing quality or style) so it evened out the budget. The best part of the process was the staff they had doing the construction were people we were able to really trust around our family. This included a detailed cleaning of tools and supplies before they left everyday. One area to improve...the timeline did go a little past the original target. Moss seemed to fully complete a step before they could order all the supplies for the next step which led to a few days here and there that no work was being done as everything came in. The quality of the results, the trust of their staff, and the final price all met or exceeded my expectations and I will certainly have Moss do more work in the future. read more

I recently called Moss to finish our attic to give us additional storage space. We spoke to Michele who was very helpful in setting up our appointment to get an estimate and then again to schedule the work. Matt and Pete came out and quickly figured out the best way to finish the space and add a set of stairs going up to the attic. They were very knowledgeable and understood that we had a budget. The crew that completed the job was great. They cleaned up at the end of each day and on the final day asked if I wanted to go up and look at it before they left. We plan on calling them when it's time to finish the basement. Communication was made easy with the Customer Care Team and we were thrilled with the end result. Quality craftsmanship! Please trust me and do NOT hire Moss Building and Design for your home renovation. We have been working with them on a addition/renovation to our home. Our project began in January of 2014, it is now almost October 2014 and the project is STILL ongoing. The project managers have absolutely no control over the construction workers (all sub-contractors by the way). The workers only show up to work when they want to because the projects are grossly mis-managed. Our project was supposed to be long finished by now, but people only come to work on it about once or twice per week. There have been weeks that have gone by where NO one showed up to work on our project. Most of the supplies ordered have been the wrong size or wrong color, and some of the workers do not have the skills for the tasks they are trying to complete. You can do better somewhere else. Trust me and do NOT hire Moss. The process has been nothing but frustration. read more

Moss is a very difficult company to work with. We hired Moss to update the tile in the shower and tub surround in our master bath. The project cost $10,000. First round they sent sub-contractors out that did not do the job correctly. The sub-contractors were then followed by Moss employees that tore out and refinished portions of what the sub-contractors did incorrectly. A basic tub deck, shower wall retile with new glass shower door and walls was now going on eight weeks. Our faith was lost in their ability to get the job done right and in any kind of a timely fashion. They kept asking for more money which we were not going to provide until the job was complete. With their refusal to return, we had no choice but to clean up the disarray they left behind and also hire another contractor to finish the job. Obvious events made it clear that it is a philosophy from the ownership down, to disregard the concerns of the client and only assess the situation from their side exclusively. read more

I couldn't be happier with the work that Moss provided! I had several "Honey Do" projects on my list that my husband and I just couldn't seem to get to on the weekends. So I contacted Moss Home Services and Brian came out and completed every single one of them! It all started with a leak in our basement which lead to drywall needing replacement. Then, I felt it was time to get all the bifold doors replaced because they were constantly falling off the track. I had originally tried to do it myself but found it was taking way too long to replace just one! Brian had 6 of them done within an hour. In addition, he installed a new toilet in my powder room and moved the existing one to the basement. He cleaned up along the way, and never took a break! I can't tell you how pleased I was with the whole process! And knowing the "Honey Do" list was complete at the end of the day...priceless. read more
