I haven't been here since I was a child, but I was passing through the area and decided to make the stop with my kids. It's everything I remember. Warmer water, no waves, a perfect place to learn how to use most any type of SUP, and it's just a welcoming atmosphere overall. Today the water was nice and clean, but because it is in the bay the water quality can change depending as it's not flowing like a regular beach. The sand is also kinda different and sticky here, I'm sure it's brought in from around the corner, but it just seems kinda different here. All the reviews are accurate. This beach is definitely a spot that after one visit my family fell in love with it. The water is very calm, it's clean, and my kids love that there is a playground. There was a vendor walking around to sell floaties and we ended up getting a raft and the sticks for the raft for our kids. We did try to negotiate on the price but were only able to save a few bucks. I saw lifeguards walking back and forth often and it definitely made me feel safer to have the kids there. If you have young kids, I definitely say this is a great little beach to take your kiddos. Plenty of trash cans around and my kids gotta play with other kids. They didn't have to run super far with their bucket of water to make a sandcastle. Needless to say, we really liked this beach and definitely plan to come back. 2 thumbs up from this mom. Used to take my kid here when he was little (a decade ago) and been here countless times since it's a neighborhood beach. It's small but plenty of things to do besides the beach. There is picnic area, benches over look the water, day camp, and walking trails. During summertime, it can be a hassle since it's pack of folks so come early if you want a spot. Parking is not free, it's a paid parking lot unless you want to walk 1-2-3 blocks from the neighborhood street parking. Overall nice park/beach and great for morning walk for sure. read more

Perfect beach for little kids, i found out from some local person who suggested me to visit this beach since I asked her is there a beach with no waves. It's a small local beach, very limited swimming area and limited parking. There was a trash on the beach, which I d didn't like. Sand is not the best one, sand on Newport and Huntington beach is much better for kids to play. The color of the ocean is weird here I guess it is because it is in Marina. I am adding this to my "fun things to do" when I have time off. My kids are water babies! After doing some research for safe, beachy places I found Mother's Beach in Long Beach (there are others along the coast but this one was closest to home). We were not disappointed. The beach was clean, water was clear, it was easy to navigate. I felt very comfortable letting my kiddos swim freely as there were multiple lifeguards on duty. Parking was close by, rinse off areas were accessible. At the end of the day, however, it IS a public space - so the restrooms were tidy but very, very bare bones...no lighting, cleaning may happen in the morning and evening - not much in between. For my kiddos to prefer NOT to change into street clothes is saying a lot - they're pretty flexible. This is the only reason for 4 stars. We had a great time, the weather was overcast (a good thing) for most of the day. There were vendors selling floaties and ice cream.....and some take Venmo - a bonus. read more

Mother's Beach (technically Marine Park) is the best beach for little kids because it's a shallow, waveless, shark-free part of Alamitos Bay with lifeguards. There's shady lawn for picnics, a volleyball court, and a seasonal cafe. The cozy, pristine, mellow, bro-free, urban beach is across from a boat launch marina, practically under the 800' Davies Bridge towering 32 feet above the water. ("No jumping" signs refer to the university student who died, doing so in 2002) Incidentally, the 4-acre Marine Park area was used for the Dexter series, including where Dexter abducts the guy who ordered a hit on his mom (S7:E12) and where Rita's son Cody "runs away" to play on the swings (S1:E11). If it's good enough for a serial killer, you should like it. read more

There's a good amount of amenities, including a playground, bathrooms/rinse-off showers, shady grassy areas, and ice cream. Because of all this, it tends to get pretty crowded here. The parking lot can get full, so you might have to find street parking and walk a bit. I would take this with a grain of salt, but the last time we went, my wife had a minor skin reaction from going in the water. read more

I like to sit on the side of the rocks and put my feet in the water and just listen to the water splashing on the side of the rocks. I feel the cool water surround my feet and legs. The water here is just so gross. Parking isn't too expensive. The ice cream carts that go down at $8 an ice cream so get the biggest one you can.... There's a playground and other options for food there. It gets crowded fast so come early. Otherwise this is a safe wading beach vibe spot for families to hang out at. read more

Very small little park/ beach area in the area. I had never been but decided to have a mommy daughter picnic with my baby girl. It was perfect for us. They have a nice playground. My daughter is just a baby so she was too little to play but once she's up on her feet I will love to bring her back. We enjoyed the grass area where I laid a blanket down in between the trees so that we could eat and relax. There is paid parking in the lot but there was also free parking along the street. Generations of people in Long Beach have probably introduced their babies to ocean splashing and swimming through this protected, beachy inlet. It has very active lifeguards, a shallow-ish ledge, and gets pretty warm. My mom brought me here when I was a baby and I brought my children here too. It gets pretty crowded on summer weekends and people could be a LOT better about cleaning up their trash, but it's a fun place to go for the little ones. This is where our kayaking adventure began, in Mother's Beach in the city of Long Beach. This beach leads into Alamitos Bay, which runs in a circular pattern around a section of Belmont Shore. That day saw a lot of activity. There were tons of other people kayaking, paddle boarding, and driving their boats around. The beach was somewhat crowded, but I had my N95 mask, so I wasn't too worried about contracting the virus. The downside to this beach is that there was nowhere to buy water. There was just one vendor of raspados on another beach found along the bay. But it was not what I was looking for at the time. An upside is that, aside from the large bay in which to partake in watersports, there is a designated swimming area that is family friendly and safe. This was overall a good kayaking trip. The summer heat was tolerable, the people we encountered along the way were nice, and the workout gave me a good appetite just before lunch time. [Review #199] Mother's Beach was crowded on Labor Day weekend. We came here with friends based on the recommendation by their son's OT; the beach would be safer for him to explore & easier on his sensory issues. Hot weather coupled by gentle breezes made this a good day for the beach. While there is metered parking available by the beach making it easy to load/unload your things if you're lucky to secure a spot, it was packed even though we were there mid-morning. There's also street parking nearby with sign posts that requests respect for the neighborhood. Understandable when there's a deluge of beach/park goers, I wouldn't want people to trample on my lawn; litter the streets, beach, & park; or to disturb the peace. The playground has unique equipment that I haven't seen at other parks with a little something for all ages. The sand is a bit rougher than beaches with waves... this beach is inland so there are no waves & an area is secured off with ropes which makes it easier for the littlest ones that can't swim to play freely in the shallow waters. However, the water doesn't look clean; it's rather green & murky. Even if it's allowed, I wouldn't recommend swimming in it. There were 3 lifeguards on duty; the one stationed where we were seemed to know the regulars & their water capabilities as he addressed them by name & cautioned the kids on how far out they can wade. Away in the deeper waters, you see boats, paddle boats, water skiers, etc. While there are restrooms are available, I'm not sure if you'll come out dirtier than when you go in. They weren't clean, were reeked with I don't know what, & toilet paper & hand soap was not stocked; luckily some Yelpers tipped me off so I brought my own wet wipes, soap, & toilet paper as a just-in-case. There are also water stations by the restrooms to rinse off sand & the murky water. I liked it because the spouts were positioned at different levels for adults & kids, including one that concentrated on your feet. There are plenty of trash cans around, yet trash littered the beach & playground. I can't understand why it's that difficult to either store trash in a bag to be tossed later or to take a few extra steps that throw it in the available trash cans. Even my 20-month old picked up trash (i.e. metal bottle caps, empty chip bags, plastic water bottles, cigarette butts, etc.) along with me as we strolled the beach. He seems to have an innate understanding that they don't belong here, yet kids & adults who are more mature cannot pick up after themselves -- shameful. =( It later dawned on me that I've here before (~15 years ago); I came to cheer my friend's dragon boat team & later helped row when one of the crew members didn't show up. ;-) I remembered thinking what a great secluded beach, & it was much "cleaner" back then. Mother's Beach in Long Beach is a family-friendly beach that has lots of potential; it's in a nice neighborhood, & near Belmont Shore/2nd St. (a cozy area for shopping & exploring, & dotted with restaurants & bars to take a load off). WE MUST TAKE CARE OF HER so future generations can enjoy it as much as I did years ago, so I offer a cautious recommendation for the families with little ones due to the crowds & less than sanitary conditions of the restrooms & beach. read more

Let me start by saying that whenever I tell my kids we're going to the beach, they automatically think Mexico. I guess I've spoiled them by taking them to the CLEAN beaches of Ensenada and the surrounding area. Yes, they have clean beaches... and the ability to drive the Jeep right on the beach to make setting up a breeze (not to mention being able to barbecue right there, too). So when it was time to take the kids somewhere local, Mother's Beach was my go-to beach. Unlike most beaches, where the parking lot or street parking is yards away from the shoreline, Mother's parking lot is mere feet. This makes it really convenient for people like me who bring an EZ-Up, Pack-n-play, beach blanket, beach toys, table, food, etc... (hey, if you're going to do it, do it right, right?!) Plus, if you're like me and taking 3 kids by yourself, hiking with all that gear and an 18 month old who thinks that the water is a giant bath tub with no fear of drowning, you'll appreciate the close proximity to the parking lot. Speaking of parking, it costs: $0.25 per 15 minutes or in our case, about $7.00 for the whole day. It can get really crowded especially on hot weekends or holidays, so getting there early is a plus. But, it you don't have much gear or kids, you can always try for parking on the street and take your chances, but you've been warned... There are 3 lifeguards during busy times and it's a good idea to set up between them...just in case. There are bathrooms on the far ends, but they're pretty disgusting: stainless steel toilets with no toilet seats, little to no toilet paper and women's sanitary pads and tampons thrown on the floor...EWWW! Make sure you wear flip flops... who knows what's lurking on the floor. Oh, and don't expect any light in the twilight hours: there's only a sky light and natural light. When you do make it out of the bathrooms, there are sinks nearby, but NO soap. I bring my own. Expect unprepared parents to ask to borrow some... sheesh! There's also an outdoor shower with separate shower heads up high and down low, to get your feet only if that's what you want. If the sand is full beach goers, there's a nice, shady grassy area between the sand and the parking lot...nice! No barbecuing is a bummer, but no smoking is a plus and a welcome trade off (though I did see some people barbecuing towards the end of the day. Whatever...). There are little to no waves as this is a breakwater area more akin to a natural lake than anything else. The swim area is not too deep either, but little ones will stay close to the shoreline and be content with calves getting wet. There's a small playground area, but I find that absurd as you come to the beach to play in the sand and water. Bring the sand toys, lots of sunblock, and a chill attitude. It's good for young kids because it has no waves, but no dogs allowed ( we learned the hard way when lifeguard asked us to leave) and a little dirty. There's one lifeguard on duty. There's a lot of vendors who sell floatation devices and snacks. Highly recommend to bring a tent or umbrella because there is no shade in the sand area. The grassy area does have some shady areas. Parking area has a fee, takes coins or credit cards. Arrive early if you want a good spot. We visited on a Sunday morning at 9:00 am and it was already busy. read more

This place and s a nice little hidden gem in LOng Beach. Started the day way too late and was afraid I wouldn't find any parking spots. Driving there was easy and breezy and I was surprised so much had changed at the marina off Appian and second. Thanks Yelp for posting the exact address and I clicked the gps and it guided me to the exact location. Parking is first come first serve kinda deal. You park, get your parking space and go to parking payment center and enter your space number and put the receipt on dash, otherwise you will get a ticket. Long Beach of patrols regularly. I was able to leave stuff in he car due to all the nice shady trees. Left the tent and umbrella! The sand and the grass is great option. I stayed under the trees and in the grass. We walked to the water and it was mellow and calm, so no fear of rip tides or having to swim to save a life. There are lifeguard posts and people seem to keep the peace. This place is noisy and people are loud, so if you want to meditate or veg out, go find another place. They had street vendors and an ice cream truck. You could have a volleyball game and bring the paddle board. The restrooms were decent and clean. You still have to carry extra tissue and seat covers and no soap so bring hand sanitizers or wipes! Locally you have in and out and Whole Foods market and even a Gelsons so stop by there and pick up a picnic or snacks. We will be back, but during the week and hopefully it will be less crowded. read more
