Older bathroom, could use a power wash or at least an air freshener. Shower right on the outside to wash off the sand. 5/5 Parking No paid parking by the beach, unheard of. If you can find a spot it's a hop skip and a jump from the sand. 5/5 Likelihood to Return Yes we've gone twice in the last month. This may be our new go to quick beach trip. My eldest daughter and I were at Sunset Beach for the Sunset Beach Arts Festival on Mother's Day 05/11/26. What a quaint area! Beach was serene and lovely. Weather was perfect... not too hot or cold. We weren't able to stay for too long as we had another event to attend to that day. We were able to stroll through the area and enjoy the scenic drive. Lots of small shops and restaurants on the main road. It didn't seem too crowded at the time, but then again, it was early morning. I'm sure as the day goes by, there would be more people. Parking was hard to find or perhaps I wasn't looking at the right place. I would love to return here one day to see the sunset from this beach. It is named Sunset Beach so I can imagine how beautiful the sunset would be. Can't wait to find out! read more

I do like this beach. It has a Travelodge right nearby. There's a usual spot where the eaves are farther from the sand so it makes a tiny peninsula. There's lots of little trash unfortunately, mainly half way towards the waves. The best thing is there aren't many people so it's not crowded. So we got quite a nice quiet spot. read more

Short walk from wherever you park (and yes--it's free parking, rare these days). No big hills, no stairs, no hiking through hot sand dunes with your arms full. If you want a truly quiet and chill place to enjoy the beach then look no further. Right now it's us, a random fisherman in the surf zone, and a single lifeguard for as far as the eye can see! There's not much as far as amenities go, but I suppose that's the trade off for true peace and quiet. Bring your drinks and items with you, but so long as you can brave the parking area against the locals and find a parking spot then you're in for a treat. :) read more

A low key and locals beach with less crowds! Hate to gatekeep but must review because this spots too good. It gives more of a Newport Beach/Manhattan Beach vibe with front ocean view homes. There are plenty of cute little entry paths to the beach from the parking lot. The paths seriously look like Hawaii vibes like what is this SoCal for real?? Parking-- FREE as far as I know. I've only gone during the week TBH so Im lucky to always find parking along 19-26th street. No parallel parking needed, SCORE! Restrooms-- There are unisex public restrooms between the parking lots. I saw one on 19th and 26th, not sure if there's more I'm sure there is. Look for small brown building. Body/feet washing stations available. Saw another review saying restrooms were locked on the weends so idk HEEHEE. read more

However we love the little surfer neighborhood vibe, visiting our friends that live here is always fun. I love seeing all the interesting tropical plants & foliage unique to the area. This is prime Methington Beach. I've been surfing the Bolsa Chica break since I was a kid. This review might sound harsh but I'm just keeping it real. Toxic positivity needs to leave Yelp. Notice how a lot reviews try to spin this neglected (by HBPD) stretch of beach as somehow adding to its privacy and "charm". Non-locals who don't get to spend enough time to soak it all in might of had a nice couple of hours by coincidence. No, I'm not just trying to make sure this beach doesn't get discovered, this is an extension of the state beach, it's miles of coastline there's plenty of room. The only appropriate time here is peak summer and or when fire pit season is in full swing, when there are power in numbers the crazies get scared and keep to themselves. This is proven because the closer you get to the RV campground and the surf school buildings the safer it gets, funny how that works. Prominent transient & drug abuser community around Tower 28 (where Warner Ave, the free parking lot, first bathroom, and bus junction are). The only time you see HBPD presence is if someone calls 911 obviously or if they're filling up gas at the fire station across the street. Otherwise they avoid this part of town. Mad Max Fury Road by the sea. The sand gets patrolled by life guards and rangers by truck, one direction at a time every 30-40 minutes maybe? E-bike teenagers, dog poop smeared every few feet because why let your dog go in your backyard when our taxes pay public workers (sarcasm). Most of the year you can't even see the water from the trail pavement because the sand replenishment program is in place. At the end of the day, yes it is the beach and it will be beautiful if the conditions allow. You can also have a pleasant day and experience none of what I detailed above BUT don't be surprised if Methany starts charging towards people and yelling that she is there to "beat up all enemies". The risk isn't 0 is what I'm saying. If you don't believe me people-watch that bus roundabout junction for 20 minutes or so. It's crazy town. read more

I still think Sunset Beach is underrated in my opinion. But that might be a good thing because me and my girlfriend feel we get more privacy at this beach . It is more of a beach for the locals that live here, although open to the public. I mean, it almost feels like a private beach. OK it's not Bora Bora but it's very close to a major US city and industrial area and yet it's quite beautiful. Of course, there are the oil drilling things out in the distance and some very large tankers, but it is Long Beach one of the biggest ports in the United States. If not, the world. It's not only a very Long Beach, like the area is named, but it's also very wide at least when I was there. There are some very beautiful homes that are right on top of each other, but have incredible views of the ocean. I was there on a Thursday in March and parking was not a problem right in front of these private homes. The parking is free. read more

We originally went for some fun N the sun & to release lanterns in the sky for a recently lost but never forgotten family member. Unfortunately it was extremely too windy to do so... Had a nice little bonfire going. That is until the fire department showed up & said that it was not permitted on the beach. The bonfire was then promptly & properly put out. All of the firefighters that showed up were super cool about it. Just a friendly word of advice for those wanting to have a bonfire at Sunset Beach..."DONT". It's an amazing beach. We have been to this beach many times and really love it there. It is off the PCH and is one of the first beaches after you cross into Orange County (after Seal Beach and before Huntington). Most of the beaches in Long Beach face South, with the Palos Verdes Hills blocking the cooling westerly breezes....so coming to Sunset is one way to get that back. It really faces south-west, but as the name implies, would be a nice place to see the sunset. It is usually not very crowded, so can often hear your own thoughts along with the crashing of the waves, if you are into that sort of thing. Parking is well organized here, with a dedicated small parking lot at the south end, but then having angled parking on Pacific Ave (north and south) where you can park for free. I'm sure there are really busy days when all of those spots are filled up, but for us, it's an indication that the beach is very busy that day and should move onto a different place. Once parked, there are many public pass-thrus close to where you parked, between the million dollar homes to get to the beach. The beach is not very wide, so you can save your feet not having to trudge through the sand to get to the shoreline. There are also some nice restaurants/bars/diners that you can walk to, in case you want to make it a longer day (though one of our favorites 'Fish Camp' seemed to have closed). But because of the ease of parking, it seems like a lot of people just stop by for a few minutes to see the 'ocean' and dip their toe. Very skillful surfers come out here as well as agile wind surfers, going back and forth putting on a show for onlookers. We have seen dolphins from the shoreline on certain days as well. You also get a nice view into Downtown Long Beach and can see the large ocean freighters, waiting their turn. It was nice to see only one cruise boat out there today...during the worst of the lockdown, we saw up to 4 cruise boats just sitting there day after day. It looks like they are back, cruising back and forth to Mexico. read more

This beach is beautifully tucked away from the hustle and bustle off the Huntington Beach pier. It boast with beautiful nautical views and is family oriented. I was very impressed to find easy access to many showers parking was OK and when people got stung by stingrays the lifeguard staff were very fast to respond. I was so relaxed and enthused to see the dolphins swimming off the shore there was so many people there surfing and so many families enjoying the time they were spending there. There are quite a few restaurants around and easy access to shopping and different amenities there are some hotels in the area however read the reviews for of some of the hotels. The beach is very warm and I suggest bringing sunblock because I actually got a sunburn because I underestimated the sun and I am a brown skin woman more on the chocolate side. This is 10 minutes away from my corporate HQ. Living in CA we get lots of good weather and this is our after work 'go to' spot after work. The beaches are clean and have plenty of lifeguards to patrol the waters. We usually hang near Tower #28 because there are two free beach parking lots and a restroom facility. So, guys, did you know that the rest of the US population pretty much assumes that daily life in LA consists of strutting around in swimsuits with surfboards all day, everyday and living at the beach? Silly Bears! The predominant bunch of us rarely even go to the ocean! Heck, in 8 years, I have been less than 8 times! Despite this lack of beach attendance; we certainly have our pickin' of beaches along the West Coast. Add Sunset Beach in the Huntington Beach-area to the list. Cali beaches can basically be broken down into three categories: touristy beaches, truly picturesque beaches (the ones with the cliffs and perfect photo shoot spots), and intimate, quiet beaches. Sunset Beach fits into the latter descriptor with a hint of tourist-y. Sunset Beach is an easy-access location featuring long strips of sand dunes and views out all the way to Catalina and up to Long Beach Harbor. This is one of those beaches that are relatively quiet and not overpopulated in comparison to other beaches. Perfect for a romantic stroll or some personal soul-cleansing. Let's cut to the chase folks: the views here are stunning. The sunsets put even the largest Crayola crayon box to shame reflecting off the water with the most vivid of colors while even the oil tankers and battleship-style boats add a fun essence to the scenery. Everything here looks like a painting. Sunset Beach is also the IDEAL spot for seashell and sea glass seekers. This is seriously the motherload of seashells and they are so beautiful. Oftentimes at LA beaches, one has to actually search for shells like it is gold but Sunset Beach is as abundant as one can get. Kids will have a field day and adults seeking ocean decor have found their heavenly chorus spot. Sunset Beach is also the home to gated-community beach houses worth up to 3 million (many up for air B & B options). I had the pleasure of hanging out in one and good lord... the way that people live with $3000 toilets... my Valley Girl self just can't even comprehend. Dayum! A tip for Sunset Beach visitation: it can get very chilly here in the evening so certainly bring a jacket. Sunset Beach is the real deal, folks. It is quiet, peaceful, but stunningly beautiful with glorious views and sea shells for the picking. The great part is that it isn't that busy so you can go here to be alone and get away from pesky people. LA residents may not live at the beach... but living at Sunset Beach would garner no complaint. read more

This by far is the WORST BEACH and here's why. Just go down the street to seal beach. Everyone that lives here are rude and nosy. And Police patrol the streets and are more strict now that someone got shot and killed a few weeks ago. There's too many homeless people that roam the streets and are high as a kite. Like just last week we saw one guy pee in the middle of the sidewalk and another guy with all white chalk on his face and fled the scene when I said "hi" to get to the bathrooms. They don't allow dogs, there's always trash, and you can't even see the water unless you walk a long distance to it. And overall, the residents that live there all have cameras and act like you're on their property when you have to walk next to it to finally get to the beach....which is public property. The cops are always called here and the cops here are wary of and rude to everyone. This sucks because we just wanna go to a beach without worrying about our safety, who's dangerous, or who's watching to see if we're dangerous. Worst community and worst beach EVER!!!! (And no it didn't start just because someone died, it's been this bad this whole time.) read more

What I love about Sunset Beach is how empty it is. You can always find easy and free parking, it is so quiet and serene, simply beautiful. So different from any of the neighboring beaches, I assume since it is a bit out of the way and not close to any major highways, it is a bit of a drive well worth it. This is a secret beach that most people don't know about. Most people in O.C. goes to Laguna, Newport, Balboa, Corona Del Mar, or Huntington Beach, however these popular beaches are always pack and parking is a bitch. This beach is only about 3 mile stretch of sand. It is quiet and you can enjoy a relaxing day of laying out or surfing.. Since this is a less known place to tourist and local, you almost have the whole beach to yourself. Parking is not horrible. You can normally find parking on the street and you don't need to pay I didn't really want to share my special place where I can find my solitude, but I am a true yelper, so I had to share. This place is so secret that few years ago, Sandra Bullock even had a beach house right on the beach. People didn't bother her and she had her peace and quiet in this neighborhood. My favorite thing about sunset beach is the free parking! We planned on bike riding on a Saturday morning with the fam and started here at sunset beach and headed towards Huntington Beach. Was a good workout that we all needed and enjoyed the clean, crisp, ocean air. It was a bit chilly but we all bundled up as we rode our way towards Huntington Beach pier. It was a good 6.6 miles each way, according to maps. Lots of people riding bikes, jogging, running, skipping, rollerblading, walking their dogs, and enjoyed the beautiful view of the beach. I also noticed a couple beach cleanup groups present. I am fascinated by how close the beach is to us but rarely make trips to go! Summer is just around the corner so I presume this parking lot will get full super early. Just an overall great beach, clean, not too crowded and the best part of all is free parking! read more

Nothing not to like! Sunset Beach is pretty awesome. This might be one of the most low key, hidden gem beaches in Southern California that I've been to. I can't believe I've never heard of this place before. A few friends and I decided to rent a beach house here about a month or so ago. None of us had ever really been to this area, so we didn't know what to expect, aside from the pictures online. When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised. The beach was quiet, spacious, and beautiful. This is the perfect place to go to if you're looking for a relaxing getaway. This beach has a couple poles for volleyball, but you'll likely have to bring your own net. We ended up purchasing one at a sports store nearby. Restaurants in the area are fantastic, and the properties are gorgeous. For a casual lunch, I highly recommend The Pocket Burger Shack. It was delicious and cheap as can be.
