I hired Joan and My Private Beach Club for my wife's 50th birthday bash at the beach with 24 of our…read morefriends and family and let me tell you, I was more than impressed; I was blown away, as were our friends. Joan was referred to me by a caterer that we ended up not using and she wasn't the first company I contacted. A friend recommended a friend of hers but she ghosted me for a few days and Joan instantly impressed me with her prompt, continual and very clear communication, reviews, proven track record and most importantly, professionalism. Honestly, I don't know how long Joan has been doing this but one would think she's been doing it for decades. Oh, and when the other decorator finally got back to me and I had told her I had chosen another company, she ghosted me again...not even a 'thank you for your consideration, maybe next time' text. I easily and painlessly worked out a theme, plan and cost with Joan and I've got to admit, I'm not one of the easiest fellas to work with. Add to that that I've never done anything like this before. The location was actually at our "private beach club", the private Portuguese Bend Beach Club, a location Joan was familiar with but had never worked. Access to the sand is easy as you can park right up to it, however, I chose a location about 75 yards from the parking area, right near the water's edge. Despite the relatively unfamiliar location and extra distance, Joan was eager and up for the challenge. Online contracts were simple and professional and payments were made in two installments online, once at the time of booking and once three days prior to the event. On the day of the event, Joan and her husband arrived with plenty of time to set up for our 4pm event start. When we arrived at around 3:30, we were blown away at how beautiful everything was. We used PBC's (Portuguese Bend Club) own picnic tables to form a long table instead of the low tables and Joan dressed them absolutely beautifully with tablecloths, runners, chargers, plates, two types of glasses (one for cocktails and one for wine), lovely utensils, candles and stunning, big and lush floral arrangements to suit my wife's color palette. Joan also set up 3 big umbrellas over the tables for some shade. By the way, even after sitting out on the beach that afternoon, those lovely flowers lasted well over a week and still looked absolutely beautiful! Joan also set up two lounge areas which were perfect and cozy as well as a buffet table for drinks and appetizers. Joan didn't even charge me for the buffet table, cocktail glasses and appetizer platters. I had brought some of my own glasses and platters but she was kind enough to throw hers in. Super nice touch. One thing happened that we were only momentarily devastated by was that the wind picked up exactly at 4pm when our party started and two of the umbrellas took flight and crashed on top of 2/3 of our lovely long table, breaking many of the beautiful glasses and some other things. Needless to say, I was not happy and I turned to Joan and said, 'This is not good.' Well, being the incredible planner that Joan is, get this, she had EVERYTHING back up and looking gorgeous moments later. She swapped out the umbrellas for beautiful lacey ones that would be more suitable in the wind and cleaned up and replaced all the broken glasses and things. WHAT A PRO! My wife absolutely loved her beautiful 50th birthday party at the beach and we all had such a wonderful time. I highly, highly, highly recommend Joan and 'My Private Beach Club' to take very good care of your next event.

The only downside to my experience was the balloon company I used from their preferred vendor list (Ravens Decor and More). I would say you definitely need to double check and even triple check to make sure Raven gets the balloon colors exactly right. Even though it was confirmed that she understood what I wanted, you can see the difference in the photos of what I requested and what I received. I told her I was hosting a classic Winnie the Pooh baby shower for my sister and wanted neutral colors (beige, sage, and blush) for a baby girl. After our phone call, she sent me an AI-generated mockup using those colors I asked for. I absolutely loved it, so I paid the $100 deposit and booked her services ($290 total). On the day of the shower, I was shocked and blindsided because the balloon colors looked nothing like the mockup or what I had requested. I understand an AI mockup won't be identical to the final product, but the difference was far greater than expected. I had also purchased balloons for the welcome sign in the same colors as the mockup, and the contrast between those and the balloon arch was obvious.Since guests were going to be arriving soon, I had no choice but to accept it and move on. My family and I believe strongly in respecting customer service and tipping, so I still gave her a 20% tip. My only regret was tipping that much instead of simply paying the remaining balance of $190 after she finished. I booked her based on the mockup she provided, but the final balloon colors were completely different. The colors were so different that they took away from the soft, neutral look I was trying to achieve for the shower. Overall, the baby shower was wonderful, and my sister had a great time. My only disappointment was that the balloon colors were so different from what I had specifically requested.

What made the experience even more insulting was the assumption that I couldn't afford to rent the venue. I was offered cheaper options that I DID NOT ask for, and those options didn't even accommodate the number of guests I clearly stated I would have. I never asked for the cheapest package, nor did I ask how I could save money. The assumption was unnecessary, disrespectful, and completely unprofessional. If you're going to offer a venue to the public, you should treat EVERY potential client with the same level of respect, regardless of what they look like or what you assume their budget is. I came prepared to consider spending money at this facility, and instead I left feeling judged, rushed, and disrespected. Aside from her great knowledge of the history of Manhattan beach, she has excellent taste in food. We went to 6 different food places and one wine tasting stop. The food was delicious, home made from local owners. We walked to all our food destinations, but to be honest it's actually more hands on and personal this way. Everything was close by and easy to get too. Personal food favorites from our food tour was everything lol. But for me one stood out the most and that was from the Rock 'N' Fish restaurant ( Coconut crusted Mahi sliders with a mango slaw, avocado, and sweet chilli aoli) best appetizer hands down. It was all paired with The old Navy Grog beverage, which to be honest is a must try since it's been made and continues to be made since 1958. Definitely a must try for anyone that enjoys food and being outdoors! P.s. Lauren went above and beyond for us. We had gone out to celebrate with my family. We were celebrating the fact that my wife and I are expecting our first child together and that it's going to be a girl. Lauren went out of her way to get our group cookies :)

She shared some history and tips about MB I never would have known on my own. My bf and I were able to bring our dog, which was a huge plus. The town is dog friendly to begin with, so 6 out of the 7 places we stopped at we could bring our fur baby. Each stop, we ate something unique. By stop 4 I was stuffed, but the food was too good I couldn't stop eating. There was a wine tasting which was a great addition. I would definitely do this again and bring colleagues, friends or out-of-towners!
