Went here to celebrate our anniversary and this place was well beyond our expectations. We love Indian food and we're so glad this place is close to home. We for the dinner for two which comes with Chicken samosas, lamb saag, chicken tikka tikka masala, basmati rice, naan, gulab jamun for dessert. It was super fulfilling and we had plenty to take home for leftovers. It can easily feed 3 people. All of it was super delicious and flavorful and I like that they give you two types of naan. Their mango lassi is also one of the best mango lassi I've had in the KC area. Very refreshing and not too sweet. Will definitely come here again for our next Indian food craving! read more

This was once my favorite Indian restaurant of all time. Now that I have traveled the world and eaten more cuisines, it's in the top 10.

Excellent food. We went with a party of six and everyone was enthusiastic about their meal. We ordered lamb biriyani, butter chicken, goat curry, lamb curry, and tiika masala chicken. The seasonings, whether we wanted it with mild, medium or hot came out just right. For drinks, we had mango lassi, salty lassi,iced tea and chai. The portions were huge. We all had food to take home. It was a quiet night with only one other table occupied, although people constantly came in for carry out the entire evening. We had wonderful service from the owner. This is my favorite food on the planet, if I could afford to live on their fish korma with cheese naan and raita, I would. I normally get mild or medium depending on the day and it's always so flavorful and smooth. The korma at other places I've tried can't hold a candle to the creamy texture and complex flavor of this. It is a bit expensive for me but I can stretch a to go order for 3 meals, so really the price is not bad per meal. When I choose to dine in the service is always great, and I love the ambiance every time I come. The rich reds, dim lighting, and fun music never fail to improve my mood and my appetite. read more

I had a great takeout experience here the other night. I ordered online for carryout, and the menu was easy to navigate and pay. The food was finished at the predicted time, I got there a bit earlier, and they kindly let me sit at one of the tables to wait, as it wasn't very busy when I got there (around 8pm on a weeknight). The hostess and waiters seemed friendly and nice. The place was small and cozy. Nothing too fancy but was clean. The food was perfect and delicious. I really appreciate that they have paneer tikka masala as a menu option. Not all places have the cheese option in that tikka masala sauce that I love so much. It is so delicious and enjoyable to eat that way. The garlic naan I ordered was also very good, I ate it all in one go. I had enough for leftovers of the rice and main dish. If there's one Asian cuisine Kansas City does decently well, it is Indian food. I was not disappointed by the huge portions at Moti Mahal. I got myself a lamb biriyani and the Moti Mahal platter. I wasn't a big fan of the platter per se because some items were pretty dry. However, I really liked how big the lamb biriyani dish was. It didn't taste the way I expected it to but it still had good flavor. One thing is that I just wished they gave more yogurt on the side. I also got this as a delivery order, so I would assume the food would taste a lot better if I sat down and ate it fresh. read more

This location is a sister restaurant to the one in Westport. The food is great, but the prices always hurt my wallet a little when I go. Two critical tips: --Do NOT order their naan near the end of the day through any delivery service (Door Dash, etc.), because I feel they tend to give the leftover naan or reheat naan that they precooked and never used. --Do NOT order the mango lassi when dining in, because they use a TINY, tall glass (no refills). My biggest recommendation is for people to do carry-out in person, from noon to the late afternoon. I feel that's when the food is at its freshest. My greatest disappointment is that they said they would most likely not be resuming their buffets. I think it's because they've realized they can earn more profit with their dinner menus, but it's such a shame when you want to go with friends who've never tried Indian food before and would like to sample different items. I know I miss getting to eat a little bit of everything instead of having to order $50-worth of food for one person (but again, this is where they are probably gaining their profits). read more

We live in Olathe, but my husband frequently picks up Moti Mahal on his way home from the airport after work trips. I'm a vegetarian and my go-to order is the Mushroom Mattar Makhani. The peas and mushrooms are cooked perfectly in the most delicious sauce. It's so rich and flavorful and well-seasoned. Probably my favorite dish at any of the Indian restaurants I've tried in KC (although I'm hardly an authority on Indian cuisine). Yes, yes, and yes. This place is wonderful. I have passed by it plenty of times and even said out loud place is a little hole in the wall..... and it is probably freakin amazing, and I was right!!! I love being right. So my man and I decided to order out to start my spring break off right by trying this new spot, and it's fair to say we are hooked. We ordered butter chicken, beef curry, chana aloo, garlic naan, and, of course, the beautiful rice. We got mild for all the dishes, and it was perfection. I would prefer spicy, but my man and children are pansies with the spicy stuff, so we got mild. But, as I said, it was perfection. The beef and chicken were so tender and not at all overcooked. If you're unfamiliar with Indian cuisine the buffet is a good way to start your education. I keep coming back to this place because, well, the food is just always fabulous. I keep bringing out of town friends to this place, because KC may not have much in the way of great Chinese food, but boy do we ever have great Indian here, and I'm happy to show it off. The homemade cheese "paneer" is fabulous. Start off with a paneer pakora to enjoy some fried cheese chunks dusted with paprika, or get the saag paneer, cheese chunks in a creamy Spinach curry. The curries are all excellent. The naans and roti are perfect every time. I can't find anything bad to say about Moti Mahal, and I've dined in and had take-out from both this location (primarily) and their Westport location (occasionally) as well. Their Indian beer selection is limited but also a nice touch: the Indian beers they have available in bottles are quite good if you like a nice full-flavored lager or a pale ale. I would encourage you to also try the coconut soup to start off with if you're in the mood for something mildly sweet. Along with some paneera pakora it's an excellent way to start a meal. This is without question the most delicious Indian food I have ever eaten. The veg samosa dough was buttery, light, not at all greasy, and the filling wasn't runny. The vegetarian korma is like velvet, and the lamb biryani beautifully spiced. The naan is so fresh, pillowy soft dough with great char. Indian food is obviously very hard to come by here in Kansas City and even harder to come across good Indian food. There's really nothing like the true ethnic stuff from India itself, but seeing as that's a bit far away for most people here, Moti Mahal is good enough. However, by good enough, I mean really very well done. Kansas City has had a couple Indian food places around over the years, but Moti Mahal is the best, in my opinion. I've never personally been the restaurant, but I can vouch for the food there, and let's be honest with ourselves, does it really matter what the place looks like as long as the food is delicious? For Indian food in general, my family and I tend to go for the buy-a-couple-dishes-and-share technique, and that's what we did here. We got some Indian classics, the Indian Butter Chicken, Lamb Biriyani and naan. I know it sounds like not much variation, but I can assure you, these meals are too good to not get every single time. The butter chicken has a perfect ratio of sauce to chicken, and it also pairs very well with the naan. The biriyani doesn't have any sauce on it, and would be kind of dry by itself, but with the butter chicken, its paradise. The naan is delicious by itself and with just about any Indian dish. Even with the garlic flavor, it compliments anything. Now, for most restaurants that I love, I would want to try other dishes, but for Moti Mahal, I'm not sure, because the stuff we get is already so good! read more

Stopped in when we were in Kansas City chasing the sun. It was very late when we got there and they were closing at 9pm. By the way, they close at 9pm not 930pm as yelp indicated. The window panes were all covered up so we could see if there were other patrons in it but tried anyway. Glad we did. Lighting is a tad dim but when we saw the staff, we commented that this is an authentic Indian restaurant so food will be good. True enough. I specifically commented to the wait person that I like it flavorful and spicy (not heat wise but from the Indian spices) and they delivered. They started us out with papadam with asam chutney And we wished they had given us more. It was so good. Chicken tika masala and goat dish were tasty with the basamati rice. This was comparable to another Indian place I. Providence RI so we were happy. When we were done and ready to pay up, wait person brought out desserts. The usual sweet balls with rice in condensed milk. I don't fancy sweet stuff but my dining partner said it was good when the sweet ball was eaten together with the rice. The rice could be better. The grains were too small and dried out. The mint chutney was too bright in color. I've had a fair amount in the past and don't remember it being like this. I wonder if they use green food coloring. I know fresh mint turns brows quickly but you can prevent it by adding lemon juice. Maybe there's an Indian ingredient so don't know about. The mango chutney is waaay too watery. I can't dip papadum in it and I can't pout it over my samosa. I actually compared the chutney side by side with chutney from another Indian place. Scratch one more place off the bucket list! Add one more cuisine to the experience list. Tonight, for the first time I tried Indian cuisine. I've driven by this place since it opened countless times, but I never stopped. Tonight, I stopped. I'm talking about Moti Mahal on Barry Rd. by I-29. I know nothing about Indian cuisine. Tonight, I found out how delicious it is. Looking over the menu I find a section named Ghost. Oh, great, they serve haunted food! But in fact, Ghost, is Lamb. When someone mentions lamb, I get weak at the knees and start to purr! They offer lamb in five different dishes. I chose Lamb Masala, tender, boneless lamb prepared in a tandoor clay oven with rich Indian spices in a thick delicious sauce. This dish can be prepared plain, mild, or spicy. I chose spicy! I also ordered Garlic Naan bread and a cold beer. Sitting back, I wait patiently for my food to arrive. A few minutes later they bring out a large plate, a bowl of rice, a bowl of Masala Lamb and a basket of Naan. While contemplating how much rice to put on the plate, I break off a piece of the bread and take a bite. It was thin and warm with a good taste of garlic. There were slightly charred areas adding another flavor to the taste. And then there is the Lamb Masala! Big, tender chunks of lamb in a thick, rich, delicious sauce. In a younger version of myself, I thought I hated Indian food. It all harkens back to an incident in Norman, Oklahoma when I let someone order for me off the menu and I was stuck with a plate of peas and cauliflower and everlasting nightmares. Just recently I reluctantly joined friends at an Indian buffet and wow - I realized that I have been missing out on some amazing foods. My evening at Moti Mahal made me a firm believer that the food of the sub-continent is on par with any worldly cuisine, in fact it has probably started a new culinary obsession, similar to the sushi addiction I was on for a while. We shared a chicken samosa that was a piping hot pastry filled with seasoned ground chicken - best ever. My wife and I shared the Butter Chicken and Tandoori Chicken. Both were incredible but the BC really stood out with the thick creamy seasoned sauce that the large chunks of tender chicken were drenched in. The food here is pretty decent but it didn't taste very fresh at the end of the night. I had flown in to KC later in the evening and was starving. I got in probably an hour before close and proceeded to order an array of things. Some of the descriptions on the menu did not match what came out. A lot of the dishes say they are served in traditional clay pots as a stew but when they arrived at the table they were in open dishes and not very hot. I felt rushed out at the end even though it was not closing time. The staff had literally grabbed their jackets and belongings and were just standing there waiting for us to be done. Moti Majal's lunch buffet was exceptionally good, varied and incredibly cheap when I stopped by Saturday to try them out around 12:45. The place is not huge, maybe seats about 35-40 people max, and there were a few other diners there for the lunch buffet which they offer everyday. I was quickly seated and given water, a mango lassi, and fresh baked naan which came out about 5 minutes later, freshly baked. The buffet offered a good selection and included a self serve chai station. The chai was excellent, creamy and will spiced. I had several cups. On the menu today was butter chicken, beef korma, goat curry, tandoori chicken, saag paneer, chicken tikka, vegetable pakoras and about 4-5 other dishes I didn't get a chance to try. Everything was deftly spiced and the goat curry was fantastic without the overwhelming gameyness I've found at other Indian restaurants. Service was nice and quick, removing empty plates quickly and refilling water immediately. For $11 this is an amazing lunch spot at a steal. I'll be ordering dinner from them soon and I hope it's just as good. read more

Moti Mahal is pretty tasty, normally. I've eaten here on a number of occassions. Their chicken tikka masala is very creamy and the chicken crazy tender. However, on Mothers Day I placed an order for 5 dishes and they were all lacking in some way. The tikka masala was ordered medium but it was so hot we had to down milk on the side. It made it not enjoyable at all. Our other three dishes were ordered mild but were incredibly spicy as well and watery. They weren't creamy at all which is what I normally love about Moti Mahal. I'm hoping this was just a one off experience and that I can update this review with my next experience. read more
