On our last stop in St. Joseph, we were craving a little spice in our lives, so we decided to give this Indian spot a try. The restaurant itself was clean, and our server was attentive and friendly. A couple of people in our group appeared pretty satisfied with their meals, but as someone who loves genuine spice and great Indian cuisine, my dish really missed the mark. The Food Breakdown: Chili Chicken: I was expecting an authentic, fiery Indian chili chicken. Instead, while there was a decent amount of chicken, it was mostly loaded with peppers and onions and tasted much more like a Chinese-style sweet and sour chicken. As far as heat goes? It had about as much kick as a fake fireplace. Garlic Naan & Sides: The garlic naan was actually the best part of my meal--fresh and full of flavor! Unfortunately, naan doesn't pair great with sweet and sour sauce. To make matters worse, unlike other entrees on the menu that came with rice, mine came out completely on its own ("in its birthday suit"). The Price & Verdict: For the quality and execution of what I received, it felt pretty overpriced. The naan was around $6 and the entree was a shade over $20. My recent visit to Clay Oven left a lot to be desired, both in terms of food availability and cleanliness. To start, we tried to order the veggie samosas along with another appetizer (mango strips?) for our table, but the kitchen was completely out of both. For the main course, I got the paneer tikka masala and a butter naan. The food was okay, but it was surprisingly bland and lacked the rich spice and heat you expect from good Indian cuisine. However, the biggest issue of the night was hygiene. The main white dinner plates brought to our table had a distinct, funky odor--almost like a musty, moldy smell from a clogged dishwasher. Fortunately, the serving dishes that held the actual food smelled fine, so I ended up bypassing the dining plates entirely and just eating directly out of the serving bowls. read more

Loved our dinner out. Actually went here for my birthday and very happy we did. My hubby enjoyed it too and that's saying a lot. We kind of shared the chicken biryani (like fried rice only really tasty) and Dal Makhni (black lentils) with the garlic naan between both of us and we loved it all. I enjoyed adding the yoghurt to the lentils. We shall be back! I wish I could bring my mom here if she ever makes it back here for a visit. While most of the food was pretty good, we won't be coming back. $130 for a family of 5 without drinks, and two of the kids just had appetizers. They were out of mango lassi. They were out of samosas. This was 1pm on a Sunday. The bathrooms were dirty and the whole place looked like a DIY experiment. Could hardly hear the waiter. I raved about this restaurant when I discovered it on a trip a couple of years ago. Excited to visit today for the third time. Little cups of complementary chai tea: gone. Pretty tablescapes: gone. Annoying addition: a damn TV. And prices are up a good 20%. $29 for a vegetarian entree and an order of plain naan. No drink. Food is delicious but the dining experience is beyond disappointing. I'm in town staying with my daughter and coming from Chicago, and at times St. Joe can seem like a bit of a food desert. But I was so excited when I discovered the Clay Oven was just right down the street. I started off easy with a take out order of Chicken Biryani and Garlic Naan and I was not disappointed! The gentleman that took my order and cashed me out was such a nice man! The food was amazing and I'm planning on going back tomorrow to try the Dal. We were traveling down I29 and decided to give this place a try. It was very clean and nice inside. The service was great and the food amazing. We love Indian food and this was the best we have had. Even better than the place in Boston. My husband had the Lamb Rogan Josh and I had the Chicken Biryani . The lane and chicken were very tender and the flavors were perfect. Sad to see Gyro Paradise leave Saint Joseph but thankfully it was replaced with something else that sprinkles a little more culture into our city. Maybe a little pricy for this town (hopefully not), but the food has been really good both times we have visited. We will be back. Not pictured is the Garlic Chicken. IMO, it is not worth the extra money that it costs. The dish is about $5 more than other dishes and we enjoyed the others more. Can't go wrong with the Coconut Curry and Naan! I would give this negative reviews if I could. I placed a to-go order when they first opened. I ordered Kheer, I didn't receive. I was told that I would I could have one the next time I came, it has been almost a year and every time I call they don't have it. I did ask if they would just refund it on my current order and was told they can't and I can come the next day for Kheer. To me, that is unacceptable, I wanted the food today, I just wanted my money refunded that I have paid and received no product. read more

The service is great. The food tastes great. Diarrhea afterward, not so great. I've been twice, and tasted 4 different dishes. It's delicious. Always wonderful. The first time, I blamed it on something I did. This last time, I ate half of mine to be sure, and my husband ate all of his. He was nauseous this morning and I almost didn't make it to the toilet several times. This is the 6th restaurant I've been to here in St. Joseph and I give up. It's as bad here in St. Joseph, MO as it was in Woodland Park, CO. I'm sick of getting sick here when I eat. I never know if I'm going to get sick after eating out here. It is not normal to shit your brains out or vomit your organs up after eating. I'm not going out here to eat again. The only place that does not make me sick here? I just had dinner at this lovely restaurant. Palak Paneer, one of my favorite dishes, was delicious served with light, fluffy basmati rice. I ordered medium spice, which was perfect for me. The server was polite and helpful, and she brought me a complimentary mango lassi. The menu has many vegetarian and non-vegetarian choices. All the customers seemed to be enjoying their food. Stopped in to place an to go order. Had a great mango drink while i waited. Loved the music playing and noticed the couple sitting next to me really loving their food. I ordered the mild curry mixed vegetables and garlic Naan. Curry came with a container of white long rice, I loved everything. Made 2 meals of this. We went in today for the first time and the food was excellent. My fiancee and I had naan and Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Curry. Lots of food comes out. The Tikka Masala was not very spicy, just a warmth that slowly built that was very pleasant. Curry was melt in your mouth good and you can't go wrong with Naan. I'll definitely be back and would try many more dishes because they all sounded good. Its nice to have an indian resturant in town now so I don't have to go all the way to Kansas City for these flavors. Very quiet atmosphere. I like their service manner as well. What a needed addition to St Joe's restaurant options! Arrived here Thursday (4/18) about 6:30 for dinner & was about 3/4 full but still had plenty of table choices. Very extensive options which include numerous vegetarian dishes, plus chicken, goat, lamb & shrimp proteins. Ordered samosas, garlic naan, chicken saag and butter chicken (medium spice heat on both). Two samosas were size of baseballs, handmade dough covering perfect ratio of peas & potatoes deliciousness; was sweet then spicy and went perfect. Protein orders delivered in hot metal bowls as was basmati rice (allows you to combine on your plate as you choose) and warm huge brushed naan sheets. Both dishes were very good but think our fave (on this trip, at least) was the Chicken Saag, just personal choice as if they were "out of" it I'd have no problem getting the Butter Chicken! Hope St Joe folks will give this new place a try (spice level seems equal to Asian cuisine spiciness and they're able to adjust level based on your choice/selection): bet it'll be a new addition to residents' lunch & dining rotation. read more
