I want to love Motomaki. Heck, its where my girlfriend and I went on our first date a few years back. The fact is that over the years, they have given me a lot more to complain about than to appreciate. 1) Their prices don't line up with the quality of their food. Motomaki is affordable, but its distinctly more pricey than its immediate fast casual competitors. There is a Chipotle and a Noodles and Company right next door, and all three restaurants offer approximately the same quality of food, the same quantity of food, and the same atmosphere. The main difference (other than the style of cuisine), is that Motomaki is a couple bucks extra per meal. 2) The food quality is inconsistent. I have had meals at Motomaki which were darn good. I have also had meals which included undercooked rice, partially frozen asparagus and overcooked chicken. I have also discovered that ingredients I requested and paid for were left out. 3) The staff is hit or miss. More often than not, the staff are reasonably courteous and polite. That said, a few employees are rude, or otherwise fail to meet the minimum expectations for a customer service position. 4) My biggest turnoff of all however, is the fact that Motomaki's computer are programmed to include a suggested 15% gratuity. If you don't want to pay an additional 15% of your bill, you actually have to opt out of this. For a fast casual eatery with zero table service whatsoever, I think this is entirely inappropriate. In fact, Motomaki essentially functions on the same model as McDonald's: Order at counter --- return to counter for tray of food when called --- bus own table when finished. In summary, the food isn't bad at all, but its a bit pricey for what it is, and more than a little bit presumptuous. read more

Delicious food but it seems like every time I go, the prices get higher. I usually get the nacho tuna bowl which has decent portions of spicy tuna, guacamole, and mango salsa. Overall, a nice spot for a quick lunch or dinner but a little pricey for what you actually get. read more

A good place to get a quick lunch. I recommend the curry salmon in a bowl ( I add an extra grilled salmon). They have a loyalty program called "Big roller" they used to give your first entree for free when you enroll but they don't do that anymore. You get a free entree (up to $16) for your birthday month and you get a free entree when you spend $150 (it used to be $100). I normally love this place but the consistency has been awful lately!!! It's gotten to the point where we have to unpack our order to make sure everything is right before we leave. Of course today again, it's not. They put tuna on my roll when I asked for none and they forgot the sauce on the side that we asked for. Not a big deal until it starts to become a regular thing and it's now a regular thing with this place. The worst part is that they didn't even roll our sushi rolls right!! They pretty much folded them in half so when you took a bite, everything fell out!! Guest service and guest recovery is absolutely awful here! When they're on point, this place is great! My picky son loves it but you have to make sure if you're getting your food To go that it's right before you leave or you'll get all the way home and be very upset. read more

okay after that horrible experience... and the manager hooked us up... i must say its back to the quality we're used to .. there were some changes.. but it wasn't enough for me to write it off for example..in the Kalbi.... they used to dice up the kimchi which was awesome because when you'd mix it up it would evenly distribute so you'd not only get the flavor mixed in with everything else.. it made it SO GOOD..sort of like if you added siracha or chili paste to a dish...... you know what im saying....... now they don't chop it up... disappointing. the other problem is i ALWAYS get my sauces on the side... for specific reasons. some peoples idea of a little.. or a lot or just normal can be much different.... i forgot to get my sauce on the side.. and it was DROWNED in it... too much sauce.... but that was my fault for not getting it on the side. but long story short.. we are back to eating here on a regular basis again.. read more

My wife brought me home a bowl last night and it was just a pile of slop with 2 pieces of cucumber next to it on a bed of rice. No flavor to be found. I love sushi but this was just gross. Not sure why all the hype about this place. I take pride in the way the food I make and serve up tastes and looks. It may be healthy but it looks and tastes terrible. I have enjoyed all my meals at Motomaki, and will definitely go back for more. I love the shrimp tempura, and the white rice is very good. The only thing about Motomaki is that it seems too expensive for the amount of food you get. I recommend a bowl rather than a roll if you want to get more bang for your buck. read more

This is The Burger King of sushi. We had the ahi pokie and the tuna was so tough and had a tendon or something hard and nasty running trough it. I thought I may throw up because of that. The dressing was very oily, actually greasy I hate to say. Just very inconsistent after going 4 times the past year but had to comment after this last visit bc it was that bad. it is simply not worth it, cheap sushi is not very good tasting. I give these guys 2 instead of one bc although the sushi is low grade it is fresh lower end quality.. We will just spend for the higher end traditional sushi from now on. read more

We used to love this place and go at least once a week. We could overlook the occasional missing (or wrong) ingredients in our takeout orders because the food was so yummy. However, these days Motomaki consistently messes up at least one order. But the reason we won't go anymore is the place has gotten so dirty. The black rugs (why do they need these when it's dry out?) are always filthy. So are the tables and chairs. The garbage cans have tons of dirty dishes and utensils on them. And, we don't go during their busy hours. Please get it together, Motomaki. Hire an extra person each shift to clean the customer facing areas. read more

I love this place. I love the customization, I love the ingredients, I love the atmosphere. Sometimes it can be a touch on the slow side, but I gotta give them a pass on that - the lines here get long because they're so good! The menu is hard to read if you have never been there before. The staff didn't offer any recommendations. My husband ordered a tuna bowl and didn't expect all the ingredients to be cold. He left a full bowl after one taste. I went safe with a salad. They brought out our son's order maybe 10 to 15 minutes after ours and he only had the PBJ sliders. The only reason I docked a star is because I ordered online for takeout and I had to wait a pretty long time before somebody came up to help me or even acknowledge that I was standing there. Food taste/Appearance/Price: A little more than I expected, but realizing it was sushi, I reconsidered this as not a cheap lunch option. If you are looking for genuine Japanese food, this is not the best place to go in Boulder. But if you are looking for some fast Asian food, this place is not so bad. This restaurant is very similar with Chipotle, the only difference is that this place used seaweed to wrap up the food, and it replaced meat with seafood, and it also replaced several other ingredients that are wrapped inside. I love Japanese food and have eaten in a lot of Japanese restaurants, i will not return to this place for Japanese food. read more

I do wish however that the portions were a bit bigger for their prices, the sushi burritos aren't very filling and don't come with any sides. This was our second visit to Motomaki. It was super busy when we came in. We waited about 25 minutes for our food but the manager was extremely apologetic. As was with our first visit, we all loved our food everything was delicious. My husband and I had the shrimp tempura bowl and our kids had their own make your own sushi rolls. Toward the end of our meal the manager came up and gave us return passes to come back on the house. The small part of our trip that was not up to par because of the long wait, was immediately remedied by the above and beyond expectations of the manager. nice to see that good customer service is still important to some companies. Super cool concept. When they first started, the only other place I had seen sushi burritos was somewhere in California. I'm noticing Whole Foods has started doing sushi burritos now though too. But I can't imagine anywhere else being as good. I always typically do the "create your own" but have had friends order the other options and they always love it. Everything is delicious here. Every now and again I used to splurge on Motomaki for a fun meal. It was reasonably good for the cost. Granted, the Kalbi (pronounced Galbi) meal they serve actually costs about 2 dollars in South Korea, but they did a decent job with it, despite the Kim Chi being very lackluster. Tried to go back there today and was startled to find that they have DRAMATICALLY UPPED THE PRICES. The 10$ lunch increased by a whopping 20% to 12$. It's basically a 2$ hike on everything. I won't be returning to Motomaki until the prices are back down to a reasonable level and I will be telling as many people as possible about the new prices. They serve glorified street food from Asian countries wrapped for our benefit. It's not worth the cost anymore. read more
