It's more casual and was a little cold which is the only reason for the 4 and not 5 stars. But still a wonderful experience and great food. I forgot to take a photo (but I will when we go back) of the gyoza. They were the best gyoza (dumplings) I have ever had. Which says a lot bc I eat Asian and dumplings weekly. My husband had the hot sake and said it was great. We both enjoyed your traditional miso soup as well. I was really hoping this intimate sushi spot would become a go-to place, but unfortunately these were the worst sushi rolls I have ever had. I was a little too ambitious and ordered us several rolls. Dynamite, Soho, Lafayette , Dragon, Black Dragon, and Alaska. It was the wrong night to be indulgent. The rolls were just bland. The Soho roll was probably the best one, but pretty much everything tasted the same. The rice was gummy and muted everything. The fish was cut with inconsistent thickness. The simple Alaska roll was sloppy in its proportions and the decadent, fried, dynamite roll's flavor were lost in the layers of batter and rice. It pains me to knock any place with earnest service and a clean, comfortable ambiance, but there is decent sushi in Colorado and this isn't it. Being land locked is no excuse. I will say the service was fast. The waitress was friendly and attentive. The dining area was nice enough for a date, but not stuffy so as to be off limits at the end of running errands. Plenty of people seemed to be enjoying their dining experience, so perhaps other things on the menu are delicious, but in my opinion, if you are craving specialty Sushi rolls, roll on past Sushi Ají. read more

I ordered takeout so I can't comment on the dine-in experience, but overall, the food was great but service could improve. Ordering online was a breeze and my food was ready much quicker than estimated. Upon arriving, the hostess proceeded to focus on whatever she was looking at and didn't address me at all. I noticed a bag of food on a table off to the side so I checked the receipt and sure enough, it was mine. I looked around to see if I needed to tell someone I'm taking my food but no one was acknowledging me. Being the awkward person I am, I audibly said, "Tara... (exaggeratively examining the receipt) yep that's me!" and walked out. Even then, the hostess paid me no mind and didn't say anything. I'm glad I wasn't needing a table because I might still be standing in front of the hostess a week later. I wonder if she's still looking at whatever she was looking at that day. Hell, she might've been a mannequin with how fixated and still she was! Oh, the sushi and tempura bento box I ordered were great. I'd go back for the food, but next time I'll be prepared with an assortment of silly faces so I can see how many I can get through before the hostess finally looks up... if she ever does. read more

Tried this place because their sister restaurant (King Dumpling) was decent. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy my meal from here. Everything I ordered was undermined in some way. The Shrimp Tempura left my mouth greasy and the tempura was flavorless. Their 'ginger' dressing was mayo dressing in their salad, and was lacking toppings. It was purely lettuce and dressing. The Agedashi Tofu was also greasy and flavorless, and lacked any toppings, no grated radish nor green onions. The tempura dipping sauce and agedashi dipping sauce were both underwhelming. The cucumber salad was okay, but the portion size was also overwhelmingly majority lettuce. The jalapeno yellowtail sashimi appetizer was served warm (??) and without cilantro, and the sashimi was delivered pre-drenched in sauce that made the yellowtail look unappetizing. Love this place! They have great sushi and Japanese inspired meals. The service is always wonderful and the people running it are very nice. I started out with the tasty refreshing seaweed salad. It was tender and salty, with a great taste. The cucumber rolls were fresh and crispy. Temporah rolls were perfect and well sauced. They were delicious! You must try these, vegetarian or not! It has been a while since we ventured out with the whole family for a meal but my sushi hankering decided last weekend would be IT! We've been to Aji Sushi several times but it's been at least 3 years. So happy to go back! 630p on a Saturday night, no wait. We were seated at the back near the bathrooms which is not my favorite but we were also out with two small children - always a gamble - so I understood. Overall we had a great meal. We started with Monkey Brains which, much to my 4.5 year old's relief, was NOT actually animal brains (it's avocado stuffed with crab/fish, fried crispy and topped with a tasty sauce). This was awesome! We ordered Yaki Udon (thick rice noodles in a tasty sauce with chicken and veggies) - a big hit with both kids and also made for most excellent day-after leftovers for mom & dad. Lastly, we ordered too much sushi. I need someone to develop some sort of mathematical equation to calculate "the right" amount of sushi. We never get it right and always over-order. I digress. As usual, nigiri is the benchmark by which we measure quality and Aji delivered! Salmon, tuna and eel - all so good! Tender, flavorful. Each roll we ordered was excellent too. Dined in. Late lunch. The 15 pc sashimi comes with escolar by default. Who in their right mind would eat escolar? It's banned in much of Europe and Japan (Do some research). I ordered the 15 pc sashimi with no escolar. The yellowtail sashimi was decent. The salmon sashimi was decent. The tuna sashimi was tough, chewy and not fresh. Not good. I left one piece on the plate and I never do that. Avoid the tuna. It's the cheap stuff and not fresh. The magic roll was lackluster and loosely assembled for $16. No value there at all. We received an extra mystery order of unagi, but didn't get the extra yellowtail sashimi that we ordered. No biggie, they were nice about it. The service was friendly, but not speedy even though the restaurant was nearly empty. Prices were average for the portions but the fish quality just is not what it needs to be. There are better sushi places nearby. We probably won't be back. read more

My wife and I lived in Boulder for years, and when we moved to Lafayette we were bummed to leave so many good sushi restaurants. Never fear, for Sushi Aji is here!!! We have eaten in and gotten delivery probably two-dozen times. We love everything they have to offer, from traditional to special sushi rolls, noodle dishes, spring rolls, miso soup, and my new favorite: fried soft shell crab. My mom loves to order their salmon teriyaki, which is delicious and comes with carrots and broccoli. If you dine-in, the staff is all wicked friendly and helpful. We ordered a selection of sushi at Aji for take outs. We love sushi. We often buy them at Whole Foods while buying grocery but we thought we could find better options at local restaurants. This would also allow us to support local business during Covid. I was very excited to try something new. Unfortunately, it was the worst sushi's I ever ate. Everything was buried under a layer of mayonnaise to mask the poor quality. The fish wasn't fresh. Everything was room temperature like it hasn't been refrigerated for several hours. The sushi were falling apart. With a bill of $80 for 3 people, it was rather disappointing. We ate half of them and we throw away the rest. I rarely throw away food but here I couldn't eat anymore of it. A shame. read more

I highly, highly recommend Sushi Aji! Not only are the staff (Stella at the register) and owner (Yuki) very friendly, they are equally efficient, and the food was fantastic! I was serviced immediately upon entering and I ordered to go at the counter. Even after arriving home, my sushi and noodles were packaged wonderfully with no issues or concerns. My family loves this place, we eat here once a week! We are pescatarian and vegetarian and there are so many options for both! My favorite roll is the sweet potato roll! We do carry-out every time, but the workers are nice. Service is really fast during the week, and it backs up slightly during peak hours on the weekends. Highly recommend! read more

My favorite sushi places are in Seattle, Portland, and San Fran...no duh. But I live in Colorado and don't travel much these days. So there is a great sushi place in my area. This is it. No muss, no fuss sushi. Quality of the fish is excellent for a land locked state. The service is top notch and the owner cares about what and how it gets on your plate. Currently, no indoor dinning. I recommend adding spicy mayo or getting it on the side like I did)! I would say they could have more creative rolls--I mean, less lobster and crab additions and more interesting mixes using lemon, mango, tempura asparagus, or special sauces. Yes, I'm speaking only from my picky American taste, so take that as you will. I meant to add, the wait staff is friendly and attentive, and the place is small and cute--no sushi bar, but nice, well lit tables. Sushi Aji has some of the best sushi I've tried in Lafayette. It's pretty good considering we're so far from the ocean. The food is nice but inside the restaurant is kinda dirty. It just doesn't seem very well taken care of and there are sometimes flies. We usually order for takeout for that reason, so I do recommend doing an order pickup with them! read more

I'd try them again! The mix of spicy rolls was pretty good. (There's a few different kinds in there. Some are excellent and some are so so) The main thing giving me pause is their California Roll. Not good at all. The ingredients don't seem fresh and the texture was mushy. Still, they've got a great menu and their speciality rolls are worth a try for sure. I stopped in to try this place after reading the reviews on yelp. I ordered the $22 sushi and sashimi lunch. It was supposed to come with a California roll. When my order arrived, it had a spicy tuna roll instead. I asked the server and she told me I was mistaken. When I paid the $28 bill, I want to the front and checked the menu, California roll. When I asked the same server, she asked if I didn't like the spicy tuna roll, not the point. She made no apology and looked upset that I pointed it out. Not going back! read more

There was literally nothing to write home about at this place. Everything was fine. Not horrible, not great. My wife and I got the Sushi and Sashimi for Two. Our least favorite was the White Tuna, it was tough and not great... my wife got the seaweed salad which is typically her favorite and barely had 1 bite. Otherwise the atmosphere is very strip mall and since the windows aren't covered you can watch the cars drive through the McDonalds drive thru. For over $100 for dinner, this is a place we won't be adding to our regulars. read more

Sushi Aji is in a cozy shopping center of 287. There is plenty of parking, although the seating area itself is not very big, so plan accordingly before bringing a large group here. My husband and I got here at 6:30 on Wednesday, and we were immediately seated. The waitress was prompt and polite, and they were able to accommodate my husband's food allergy (avocado) without issue. We ordered the magic roll and the Playboy roll, both of which were out within minutes. They were delicious, with just the right amount of heat. Prices were reasonable, and I love that they use reusable chopsticks for less waste. We will be back! read more
