I was expecting the worst coming from California, where you book an appointment weeks in advance or just go to AAA. However, I waltzed in around 4 pm and they took care of me right away. Filled out a one-paged application and promptly received my new license, plate, and title a little over 45 minutes later. Everyone was in a good mood due to the holidays. Since it wouldn't be a Yelp review without throwing in veiled criticism, it was a little hard to find even with a GPS. They could have put up a sign on Larkspur leading to the entrance. read more

I've just moved to AZ from CA and knew one of the first things that I needed to do, was to go to the DMV. I didn't have an appointment and I was dreading going, as I knew that I'd be there for ours. However, that was not that case! I arrived this past Thursday at 2pm to only have 4 people in front of me, I was quite shocked. Going to the DMV in CA, literally is an all day activity! A very nice gal greeted me, told me what forms I need, which I had as I had looked online the night prior. I then got my picture taken and was directed to line C. Again, only a few people were in front of me. I was then helped by a nice gal who got my plates and license sorted and honestly, I had everything that I needed, paid for both services and was an in the door in an hour...I am beyond amazed! The building is clean, the staff are friendly and overall it was just a great experience! The only negative thing that happened during my visit, was that I found out that someone had my personalized plate here in AZ... :( read more

Oh my God I hate going to the MVD. Every time I have to go here it's always a disaster. There's always some weirdo who sits next to me and tries to hit on me or say something really stupid. Or there's someone who really needs a shower who needs to literally sit on top of me. And usually you have to sit there and watch them call people's numbers forever and ever and ever. And if you're lucky when you finally do get called you can get what you need to get done and get out of there but it seems like half a time after you've waited an hour and you go to the window they tell you that you didn't do something right and you have to come back and you have to go back two or three times. Made an appointment, brought all required documents and then a week later get a letter saying the system failed to capture your signature, bring this back to MVD, no appointment necessary. Go back, but guess what? Still have to wait in the shorter line. Have to retake photo...was not mentioned in letter...and received zero apologies for their screw up and wasting not only my time but gas as well. read more

Let me start by saying, the DMV employees have a thankless job. However, the customer service here is not the greatest. There systems aren't terrible. You have to get in one line to get a number for another line, depending on what you need. Building is pretty plain, but clean. Pretty typical of a government run office. Parking is limited. I'm here on a Thursday afternoon, and it's slammed. I recommend calling ahead and finding out when the off peak or slow days/times are. I'm guessing mornings are much slower than afternoons. I was hear just to get my license photot updated. Evidently, licenses are good for something like 40 years, but your picture expires every 10 year? That sound strange to me. I had to speak to three four different people for a simple photo updated. And after all of that, they punched a hole in my license, and gave me a sheet of paper to serve as my temporary license (that will be fun to carry in my wallet). They said my new license will arrive via the mail in 10-15 days! Crazy that in todays day and age where we have 3-D printers, that it takes the DVM to 10-15 days to print and mail a new license. read more

The 'wait in line to wait in another line' concept seems counter productive & inefficient, not to mention tiring as the wait is never just a few minutes. I'm not sure how those with disabilities are addressed as there isn't a policy clearly posted. Please note: 98% of the DMV employees at this location are sitting while patrons are forced to stand in long lines. 'Feedback Tickets' are taken from you prior to even starting your business with the associate at the window. I'm certain this results in an inaccurate, yet high, satisfactory rating for those supporting patrons. read more

The computer was down with no way to conduct any business after the long Memorial Day weekend. I waited a few minutes and then decided to go work out at SCC. Upon returning a couple of hours later the computer was still down. I asked if this happens often and it has happened before after long holiday weekends. So how much time was lost by the public today? How much gas was wasted because there was no Plan B? I received a notice in the mail and have two months to update my driver's license photo. However, you can bet I will not be at Motor Vehicles on Monday July 7th for a repeat (?) performance. I actually like my old photo and think I look like the photo so why do I have to get a new one? Update: On my second visit there were hardly any customers so the photo update went smoothly. My number was quickly called with pleasant chit chat. The only " problem" was the new photo didn't show as much hair as there should have been. I commented the camera must be broken which drew a chuckle but I am sure my remark is made hundreds of times. Maybe the camera will be fixed the next time around? read more

Usually when you think of going to a Motor Vehicle registration, you think about long lines and people disgruntled, including the working staff. I came in on a Friday around lunch time, and I was able to get helped within 30 minutes. The service was great as I had all of my queries resolved in an extremely timely manner with the best efficiency that I have seen ever from a bureaucratic organization. I have been to other MVDs in Arizona, and I feel that the culture here is stronger and more close knit. Everyone seemed to be smiling. Either they were happy or were putting up a good show. read more

So I decided after living in Arizona for almost three months, it was probably time to go register my car and get a driver's license. I went the day after Thanksgiving at about 3 pm. I had to have an out-of-state inspection...this was quick and easy and I got to stay sitting in my car. Sweet! I brought a book and was prepared to wait a long time once I got inside, but was pleasantly surprised when I was immediately given a number and it was called before I could even sit down. I was done with registering my car in about less than 10 minutes, which was awesome. Too bad it cost me a freaking arm and leg to register it...$286 for one year?? I vowed right there to never complain about Ohio's $55 annual fee ever again. Unfortunately, the computers were down that day and I couldn't get my license. I will say that all of the workers I encountered were very nice and helpful, which was nice because I work in state government myself, so I know it can make you bitter and jaded. The two strikes against the Tempe MVD are: *the guy who registered my car called me "Sweetie" numerous times. He was probably around 37, so it creeped me out. *No Saturday hours. WTF? Thank goodness I bailed out of work early so I could take car of this little matter and still make it home in time to see the end of the LSU game. read more

Came here today w/ my bf because he needed a new id. There was only one person ahead of him to take the photo, that line went super quickly and the gentleman that helped him was friendly. He then had to go to the second line to pick up the id and pay. There was only about five people or less in front of us, but the line was slow as molasses. As a previous yelper said about a month ago, there were signs up by the windows saying "Training, please be patient". We tried to be patient and understanding, and didn't mind the initial wait. However, the lady that helped us, who did have a trainer right next to her, was extremely slow, and worse, extremely unprofessional. I'm not sure if she made a mistake or what happened, but the guy that was training her had to take the paperwork to a different computer. Neither one of them said a word to us, and she actually turned her back to us! I completely understand if she was new to the job and in the process of learning, but at least say something to us! Make small talk! Apologize for the delay and say you're training! Something! Anything! Don't just turn your back to us! I've been in customer service my whole life, and even as a teenager, would have provided better customer experience than her! Finally, after awkwardly staring at the back of her head for 5-10 minutes, my bf asked her if there was a problem. Her reply was something like "oh I was trying to put all the letters and numbers in and they weren't coming out right, that's why I didn't want to even do this one". Didn't want to do this one!?! This is your job! Granted, I'm sure if she was in training, it can be an overwhelming experience, but at least provide good/basic customer service by communicating - with a positive attitude! Hopefully, they'll get this training thing figured out, but I personally would rather spend the time to drive to the Phoenix or North Scottsdale locations than go here again! read more

I was really dreading making a trip to the DMV but I had a great experience! I made an appointment online 2 days prior and it allowed me to fill out/ update my paperwork beforehand. Got to my appointment a little early so I just went in and got in line. Heather helped me out and was friendly and quick! I was in and out In 10 minutes, I couldn't believe it! Goddamn this place sucks. After waiting a glorious 4.5 hours to get my stupid license, I walk away with my fabulous brand new ID valid until 2048...only to find my effing name is spelled wrong. I go back and tell genius that this is in fact NOT my name, and I need it fixed. She referred me back to the line and said I'd have to pay $25 again. Yeah...NO. So I spent the next 4 years with my name spelled incorrelty on my ID. As you might imagine, buying/selling both a house and a car with incorrect titles led to tons o' fun with lawyers. Thank you, Tempe MVD, for changing my name for me. While I always thought "Katherine" was a long name, you added 2 more letters for good measure. On the other hand, I looked smokin' hot in my AZ DL picture and was devastated to find the Ohio DMV makes you surrender your old license when registering there. :( read more

I'm grading this MVD only compared to other, similar establishments, like compared to other DMV's that I've been to. As such, it gets 4 stars. If I were writing this review and comparing this place to, say, Disneyland, it would definitely get like a 1 or a 2. Most DMV's smell like.... ugh. Death? Vomit? Vomiting corpses? B.O.? Cumin? Hatred? This one doesn't smell bad and I was here in July in Phoenix, now that's saying something. If you go to the DMV in California, you'd better not plan on meeting anyone because you WILL need to call them and say, "Goddamnit, this is taking longer than I expected." Also, California's real dick about licenses. Arizona is apparently the most lax state in the country about giving people the right to drive. I went in, gave them my California license, they took my picture and I was in and out in about 12 minutes. And my license doesn't expire until like 2345, so by then I'll be aboard the USS Enterprise... D. The Next Generation. It kind of scares me how easy it is to get a license given how old people love to drive through farmers markets and kill dozens of people. Oh well. I got mine! read more

A great experience at a DMV for me would be defined by speed. It's pretty rare to go into a DMW and come out in 30 minutes. My most recent experienced required new tags and driver's license. For the most part the workers here are trying to be efficient and quick. Here they have a information booth which is nice since they can answer all your questions and direct you to the right section. If you have to come here, make sure you're not in a rush. You'll need at least 1.5 hours. read more

My tip would be to go early in the morning, say 800am Today (Thursday) I went early in the morning to the MVD and I was in and out in 25 minutes. I was only there from 8am-825am and I was pretty amazed. This location is usually pretty quick and very organized. All of the workers are super nice and friendly. read more

The DMV carries the reputation of being hell's waiting room, with an individual Satan at every window, waiting to make your life difficult. I remember the DMV was routinely a 3 hour wait, and people there looked borderline suicidal. Not the happiest of memories. This particular DMV in Tempe is actually not so bad. They have a lot of people working there and the employees are actually pretty friendly. I've been twice, and the wait the first time was about 30 minutes, while the last visit it was closer to an hour. There are 18 different windows, so they rip through the numbers pretty quickly. It's a confusing number system, so keep that in mind when you get there that you really have to listen and watch the boards for your number to come up. I could think of better places to spend an hour, but at least it's not 3-4 hours. read more

To put it lightly, I hate the MVD. Perhaps more than the MVD hate themselves and that truly says something. I called on 4 separate occasions, only to be told they were too busy and to be hung up on. What's even wilder when I finally got ahold of the MVD, they told me to the solution to my problem was to pay $4 to have a title mailed to my creditor for a car loan. This was to supposedly transfer the title to my creditor as they "own" the car. So they said to mail the title directly to the creditor. Now if we examine that, that amounts to about the intelligence of a gerbil that was drowned and lost brain cells and had a drug addict gerbil mother. Not only did this not solve my problem, it created a larger over looming issue, as well as apparently just paying the MVD $4. If I had a choice between snorting tiny baby scorpions, nay, tiny ANGRY baby scorpions and having the Arizona MVD exist I would gladly take swarms of scorpions into my nasal cavity. I have no idea where they recruit these workers from, but it has to be some place that does not have learning past the 2nd grade. P.S. I decided midway through that sentence that 3rd grade was to smart and downgraded them to second graders. Except 2nd graders are happy to be alive. read more

Rude and made me feel uncomfortable. I hope they can work on their customers service my experience was okay I'm very patient and friendly. The lady that was asking if I had an appointment was very outrageous hope she finds a job that she actually enjoys because she seemed careless. And the white lady with the blonde hair taking the pictures was making me feel uncomfortable she kept saying my hair has to be off my eyebrow and I couldn't see so I was trying to take my hair off my eyebrow but she kept repeating saying that louder and louder. It made me feel uncomfortable she could've told me on which side but instead was just being more loud and rude. Because even though it legit smelled in there, I was in and out in a reasonable amount of time and no one was rude to me. Also, you can adapt to the smell after a while. Their ticketing system didn't seem to follow any logical ordering system, so just pay attention. Bring a book and pen and you'll survive. read more

No lie... You'll be waiting hours to just get to the information desk. At least 100 people in line and a typical government employee working behind the desk! Way to go MVD.... Living up to your name!! Nearly an hour in the "Information Start Here" line... And observing that the average BMI for these government workers is well over 35. Should give you an idea on how fast they move. I kid you not... 1 hr to wait in line, 1 hr+ to wait to get my photo taken. RIDICULOUS!!!! read more

I have been to this DMV 5 times since moving to Phoenix. My goals were very simple: obtain a new license and registration for the state of Arizona. Unfortunately, each visit posed a different problem. DO NOT go to this location, find another. 1. The website is not clear on documentation required, and is not easy to navigate. 2. The system went down while we were there (after waiting an hour), so we were issued a piece of paper that would let us return and skip the lines 3. When we returned, we were told to wait in line, even though we had said paper. 4. The woman next to us was told, after waiting a while and making it to the front of the line, that there was no one in yet to process registrations. 5. They give you a number, yet they make you wait in line anyways. Doesn't make any sense. 6. There are NO CHAIRS, so you will end up standing the entire 1-2 hours while you wait. Horrible experience, seems like they are always understaffed. Avoid this location of you can: bad first impression of public services. read more

- Failing to mail out Renewal Notice - Suspending registration for no reason - Over one hour on hold to talk to someone on the phone Arizona MVD sucks: Instead of sending me the renewal notice for my van they sent me several notices that they would suspend the registration for my other car because, according to them, I had not sent them proof of insurance. i talked to my insurance company and they sent them several letters confirming that my car always had insurance without any gaps. They just ignored these letters and one day i received another letter from them telling me that now they had suspended the registration. In regards to my van: I believe that they make extra money by failing to send out the Registration Renewal Notices. If you drive several vehicles you might overlook it or when you notice that you registration is expired it is already too late. I don't know how many cases there are but the late fees / penalties add up and you can't proof that they never sent out the Renewal Notice. Since you need the code (Record #) for the online renewal you have to wait until you get the Notice. It appears that the MVD rewards itself with late fees / penalties for their own failure to send the Renewal Form to vehicle owners. If you try to call them to find out why they wouldn't send you the Renewal Notice, you will be connected to a prison inmate in their call center ("Level one") who will immediately transfer your phone call to a line where you have to wait for over an hour on hold to talk to a "level two representative". According to the information that I have, "Level One" representatives don't have any authority and the reason why there is a message that you should not give them any personal information is that these are prison inmates. read more

The first time I went to this MVD was to change my NY license to an AZ license. I waited 20 minuted to get a number, but they called me to window 18 immediately! I was impressed but then they kept screwing up my picture and signature and I had to pose 4x for them to get it straight. But then it was good and I left. HOWEVER, on 2/29/16 I took Johanna to get her license changed to AZ. It was busier than my previous visit, taking 50 minutes just to get a number, and then an additional 90 minutes to realize there must be something wrong since everyone who was online in front of us was already gone. I told the lady at the front desk that we are number N878 and it's been 90 minutes and they haven't called ANY "N" numbers yet. She said there are no "N's" in the system (even though their computer printed it out for us). She apologized and had someone help us right away. She started the paperwork and then got up and left with our stuff and for the next 15 minutes we sat at the window wondering what was going on and where she went. Finally she came back, finished things up and we left. All together we spent 3 HOURS just to change ONE license!!! My girl refuses to go back to this location for any reason, and I too will be trying a different location! read more

They had a truly obnoxious loud pathetic little man of a customer. He was in the employees faces screaming and causing nothing but unease. He then targeted an employee named Fernando and started screaming and yelling at him, but Fernando handled himself with the utmost respect and dignity and just would not let this man outwit him. He continued to be very polite and respectful while this man continued to be nasty and hateful. I have been at this MVD on several occasions and I've dealt with this particular employee and he is always super nice. To be honest this is by far the nicest and politest MVD I've ever been to and I wanna commend whomever hired Fernando. He is definitly an asset to your office. read more

Had to pay $90 for their incompetency. Rather than risking them losing the proof of insurance with no lapse info AGAIN, we paid the 'lapse in insurance' fee so that we could finally legally drive the car again. The plates were suspended on our car (originally completely unbeknownst to us) and despite numerous attempts to get this taken care of and show proof of insurance with no lapse, they still could not file the information correctly. The insurance company faxed over proof of insurance multiple times yet it was still not fixed. Instead of wasting yet another day at the DMV, it was easier to just pay the fee. What a huge waste of time and money. read more

I was in no rush but all the employees seemed to be so happy and it just felt like they enjoyed their job. Look, no one loves going to the MVD, but this one is much much better than many I've experience in the past. I called in before going in to make sure I had all I needed since my wallet had been stolen & we had just moved here from out of state & they were pleasant & happy to answer my questions. When I got there, this awesome & friendly guy greeted me and made sure I got into the right line & even complimented me on having everything I needed before coming in. After getting there I got in a short line to take my photo & then was given a letter & number and directed to a line for my license & registration. This line was really long, but regardless of the craziness all around the woman I spoke to was very pleasant and helped me make sure I got my license as well as my registrations.
