It was 180 miles down to Austin, Texas to drop off my 1974 VW Super Beetle at Motormania and then 180 miles back home to near Abilene, Texas. A week later I drove 180 miles back down to Austin to pick up my Super Beetle and then I drive the 180 miles back home for a total of 720 miles. Had I been singing "99 Bottles Of Beer On The Wall" during my several drives back and forth, I could have put Coors out of business! Was it worth driving 720 miles to have MotorMania fix myBeetle? Yes. We have nobody in my neck of the woods that I trusted to work on my pristine 44 year old air cooled VW. Too many mechanics these days simply plug a computer into a car and get codes that tell them what is wrong with a car. And the "young guys" who work on cars these days often lack the diagnostic skills and "know-how" needed to fix what is ailing an old car. Despite the fact I had the G.I. Bill for college after I got out of the Army long ago, I paid for and finished my degree in the early 1970s by purchasing old VWs and converting them into dune buggies in El Paso and then selling them. I KNOW AIR COOLED BEETLES VERY WELL, and I built and flown my own airplane back in the 1990s, but my skills (and joints) have gotten rusty to say the least and I had no interest in working on my 1974 Super Beetle now that I'm a retired dude. Roger and Tom not only fixed the problems I knew I had, but they found a couple I was not aware of, lucky for me. So if you are ever driving around near Abilene, Texas and you see a senior citizen driving a bright yellow VW with "Vietnam Veteran" license plates on it... having a big "grin" on his face, it's because Roger and Tom made my VW "think" it was a year old again. And the old dude driving it thought he was 24 again as he was in 1974. I brought my non-running 2002 Volkswagen Passat in for a consultation and Roger was so wonderful and helpful. He was able to figure out the problem within 48 hours of having the vehicle and was able to get the problem taken care of and get my car restarted in less than a weeks time. I told him that I was leaving to see family in Florida and needed to get the car in working order to get me to Florida. He was very helpful and made sure everything was in working order and gave me a full update on the state of the vehicle. Things to look out for on my drive and that I should make sure to take good care of it along the way. He called me every step of the way throughout the fixing process to let me know what he had found and offered his best advice of how to proceed. He was so very knowledgeable and very helpful! He even offered help through a sister shop because my vehicle also needed two new tires. He called up his buddy shop and told them my situation. I was also able to pick up my vehicle after hours because I wasn't able to get there to pick it up before they closed. He was one of the best mechanics that I've ever brought my vehicle to. I will definitely bring my vehicle back for a check up when I head back to Austin. I would highly recommend this shop to anyone! Very satisfied customer here! read more

I have also used Rodger and Tom over at Motormania in the past for my 1972 Beetle and my wife's 2003 Jetta. My beetle was a restoration/upgrade project that I started over 10 years ago. Currently I didn't have much time to work on it so I took it to MM and they got the engine running smoothly and the brakes working. Rodger never tried to sell me anything I didn't need. When working on the brakes, he warned me that since they were so old and weren't used for over 10 years, it was very likely that a lot of the brake system would need to be replaced. But, after getting into the job, they tested everything very well and only needed to replace a few brake hoses - thus saving me a few hundred dollars. We trust MM more than the VW dealerships here in Austin and always take my wife's car there for an oil change since a Jetta oil change is very expensive anywhere else. Plus, when have taken the Jetta in for an issue in the past, MM told us to take it back to VW because that was a recall problem and they should fix it for free - instead of MM replacing it and charging us. I discovered these guys a few months ago. I only wish I had found them earlier in life. I wouldn't make this recommendation if I didn't trust them. And I wouldn't trust them if I hadn't received stellar customer service and quality repair work. Rodger and his crew are truly an exception here in Austin where quality VW shops are far and few between and most seem to suddenly go out of business... Every step of the way Rodger offered prompt callbacks, with solid communication regarding the repairs needed (front right tie rod, both inner and outer) and also some high dollar work which he told me was NOT needed. (CVs, and struts, because I thought the whole front end was screwed) This guy actually turned down work I suggested because he said it wasn't necessary. -(and then clearly stated why it wasn't necessary until I understood the real problem with the front end) Name another mechanic in town who will walk away from a cash sale based upon principle and honesty. I realize it's quite a drive for most Austinites, however it's worth making the effort. -The owner and crew are good people with integrity, a trait truly unheard of in the auto repair business. read more

My car is hanging out with Mortormania today in fact - getting her power steering line fixed. After I got off the phone with Roger a few minutes ago I just had to write a review. I have been taking my 2003 GTI to Motormania for the last 5 years. Roger, Tom and the rest of the Motormania crew are the go-to VW specialists which is why I make the drive all the way from central Austin because I refuse to take my car anywhere else! People think I am crazy for doing this and often recommend mechanics closer to me, but I still just make the drive or get my car towed there because I know I am in good hands. What I love about Motormania is that I never have to worry about them overpricing me or making me fix things that don't need to be fixed. Roger explains everything that they do to my car and he always makes me feel confident that he cares about me as a customer. We even discuss problems with my car in terms of "I would not worry about this if it was my daughters car" and "I would fix this if it were my daughters car". They are your friends, not just your mechanics! Excellent, honest service in a timely fashion. This place is as good as it gets, for sure!! read more

This is an update on Motormania. Today as I got in my VW Jetta Wagon to leave work, I thought I was in reverse when I car suddenly lurched forward and up over a curb. When I tried to back up - I twisted and pulled off the front quarter of my bumper. There I am in my dress pants trying in vain to snap the thing back on. Hopeless. Luckily I was 15 min. away from Motormania- where I continue to get my oil changes. I called them and Roger said bring it by since I was on my way home. Roger and Tom were finishing up the day and here I come extending the already long hot day. But these guys took the time to fix my bumper and it even required them to put it on the lift to access correctly- instead of my suggested solution- just drill a screw into it. Tom put my bumper back on and made it look like nothing had ever happened. Wow. I'm thankful their cooler heads prevailed- even though I'm sure they were tired and wanted to go home. Taking care of customers in their moment of unexpected need is just the right thing to do at Motormania. This is just one of the many reasons why I am still a customer to this day. read more

If it's any indication of how delighted I am with Roger's and Tom's professionalism and service, this is only the second Yelp review that I've ever written; however, I feel compelled to tell anyone who will listen--or, in this case, read--about how delighted I am. These gentlemen deserve 5 stars (in italics, underlined, and in bold print)--and kudos and bravos and applause. When I was 14 years old, my father bought a 1967 VW Bug for me (now named Old Bug). I still own the car, but in recent decades it has been having more and more automotive versions of senior moments, bless its heart. After an end-to-end checkup and what turned out to be a relatively minor repair--I was bracing for a stinging total, but it was less than $200--Old Bug is running like a teenager again. The first time I drove it after Motormania's magic, I was so happy that I literally started crying. I have been bringing my '03 Jetta to Motormania for over 3 years and have had an excellent experience. Roger and his crew at Motormania are true VW experts and are honest straight-shooters who do the job right without unnecessary maintenance or repairs. For example, on several occasions, I have asked for a certain repair that some other mechanic suggested. The Motormania crew could have taken advantage of me and done the repair, regardless of whether or not it actually needed to be done. Instead, Roger has advised me against unnecessary work. I have always appreciated this. I have been a loyal customer and Roger has always treated me accordingly - he knows how to take care of his customers. Tom and Roger are AWESOME! I had a wheel bearing go out on my 74 Beetle while I was running errands out-of-town (I Live by New Braunfels) and was freaking out since it was after 6pm. I was referred to Motormania by Christian Brother's Automotive (who happened to still be open). Tom and Roger went the extra mile and stayed an hour and a half over working to get my car back on the road. Because of their care and effort, I was able to get home safe and sound. They not only replaced the bearing, which had welded itself to the spindle due to the heat, but adjusted teh brakes, checked the air in the tires and checked the fluids. Then, the following morning, they called to make sure I got home okay! They turned what could have been a horrible nightmare, into a real pleasure. The price was an awesome surprise too. I took my '99 VW Beatle in because the engine light was on and I needed it fixed or reset so I could get the car inspected. Motormania was kind of far for me to drive to (about 30 min), but I heard they are the best in Austin for out of warranty VW work. I dropped the car off on Monday afternoon and they called me back on Tuesday. Not only had they fixed the problem, but they also got my car inspected. They also said they noticed my air conditioner would go off when they stopped. I had a local garage try to fix it, but they could not figure out what was wrong. But Motormania said they could get to the bottom of it and diagnose the problem. I let them and low and behold they fixed that too. The total cost was way under what I expected and they were very professional and personal at the same time. I highly recommend Motormania to anyone with a VW, even if it takes you 30 min to get there. read more

They offer outstanding service at reasonable rates and will never try to up sell you. Roger will actually advise against any maintenance if he feels it would be a waste of your money. My husband I moved to Austin almost 3 yrs ago and thought we had found someone to take care of our cars until my husband's 2000 Jetta was experiencing loss of power and after several visits, the other place told us it was due to the age of his car. My husband found Motormania online and we took his car there right away. Roger told my husband that they had dealt with this issue before and sure enough, his car ran like it used to. Since then we've never looked back. They are always willing to go the extra mile and the prices are fair. I had to take my 2009 Volkswagen Jetta into the dealership for a recall. Of course they also did an inspection to see if there was anything else wrong with the car. They sent me an email marked, "HIGH SEVERITY" with a video of the technician explaining what he had found. They then gave me a quote of nearly $3000 to do the repairs. A friend of mine told me about Motormania. Thank God!!! Roger and his team are AMAZING! Not only did they save me a ton of money but the customer service was outstanding. I am particular about my possessions and especially who works on them. We chose Roger to work on our 2000 VW Golf based on Yelp feedback like this and a coworker's suggestion. The one thing I like about this shop is Roger is the customer service department. So you know what is going on with the car because you are speaking with a mechanic, not a service rep. We have been to this shop for two separate occasions, one a big tune up and to replace the belts and water pump. Another to fix a gasket oil leak. In no way did I feel like I was being cheated or a fast one was being pulled over on me. We will be taking the car back for the next service. read more

I went to Motormania for the 10k on my VW EOS. They are the best. The know what they are doing and they are honest. You can't ask for more than that from any car repair business. Compared to scheduling an appointment with the dealer and having to put up with their lack of personal service, inability to get you in and out and their overall poor attitude, Motormania was a pleasure. They even call the night before to remind you of your appointment and to see if your needs have changed. We are lucky here in Austin to have Roger and his staff.
