A few months ago, I tried Himalayan food for the first time, which was a mistake. It was delicious. Once you discover something that good, you spend the rest of your life hunting for it. Human beings are funny that way. So for Father's Day, my wife booked a table for six at Mount Masala in Voorhees. This turned out to be an act of touching optimism. When we arrived on a Saturday night, only three other tables were occupied. We could have brought a small marching band and sat immediately. Still, the staff was warm, the room was pleasant, and we decided to order family style. Civilization occasionally gets things right. The sizzling chicken momo arrived first, hissing and steaming like a diva. Sadly, the spectacle outperformed the substance; it was essentially good food wearing a sequined jacket. The chicken tikka momo, however, was outstanding. They were tender dumplings smothered in a sweet, familiar tikka sauce that my boys attacked with an enthusiasm usually reserved for free money. My youngest ordered the chicken makai soup and delivered a concise, pro-level critique: "It's fine." My oldest enjoyed his tofu Manchurian, though his eyes kept wandering to better plates. The beef skinny noodles and chicken Hakku Bakku chowmein were massive and well-made, but they lacked personality. The chowmein tasted like a very good lo mein. Nothing wrong with that, just predictable. The undisputed star was the chicken choyla. It was smoky, spicy, and rich with mustard oil. If the other dishes were polite small talk, the choyla was the eccentric guest telling stories nobody had ever heard before. Everyone at the table kept reaching for it. As for the service, the staff was incredibly friendly but possessed a unique talent for vanishing. Despite the empty room, refilling water and securing extra napkins became a minor side-quest. But then the bill arrived: $120 for six people. These days, taking the family out can feel like financing a small yacht, so this felt like a genuine bargain. Mount Masala isn't perfect, but it's memorable. The food was delicious and flavorful. The server was helpful (given how unfamiliar my party was with Himalayan Cuisine). My 7 year old nephew loved his paneer tikka masala fusion. We all enjoyed the handsome chicken lollipops (fried chicken, no gravy) and chicken momo sizzling (delicious dumplings served with sizzling sauce). My Himalayan shrimp curry (with gravy on the side) was delicious, and my friends' veg ball korma makani fusion and tikka masala fusion were also delicious. I got there like 30 mins earlier prior and was able to get the anticipated area for 16 people.as people filtered in, they sat down and looked @ the menu. We placed our orders & other than people forgetting what they ordered, there was perha[s only 1 mix up with the food, which happened to be mine. When I finally got my order, it wasn't as good as I thought it woukd be and for the price, it was small. Just like the same as other people in our party. Some p[eople mentioned that the food did not taste good and it was not even worth taking home. I usually tend to like dishes that I order @ Asian restaurants but this was an exception. The restaurant is a fusion of CHinese & Indian w/ the sauces, not so much w/ the food tho. Although you might be ordering something like Beef Curry, the flavor profile is completely different from one you'd get from India or Bangladesh. Coming in a classic tin pot, it's hearty and rich, perfect for sopping up with your rice. Where Mount Masala shines is the appetizers. The Jhol Momo and Sizzlling Momos are standouts. You can't say you've tried Nepali food if you havent had momos! This place was highly recommended by a friend's friend. To be honest, it might have been hyped up too much. Got the lychee lassi which I highly recommend. It was an amazing combo and worth getting. Then we got the Handsome Chicken Lollipop which was good. I really liked the batter they put on the chicken and the quality of the chicken they used. We then had some sizzling chicken momos. These momos were kind of a let down. They felt like dumplings you would find at the supermarket aisle. We wanted everything out spicy and i felt like none of the dishes we got were spicy. It was a cold dark evening and the winds were blowing in every direction. Even the car sensed the winds adding a chill despite the vehicles interior heating system. Little did we know that our dinner choice would situate us at a table reminiscent of a table set out on the slopes of the Himalayan snow covered peaks. Our navigator informed us that there would be several options for our winter dinner as we pulled into the plaza searching for a parking space. Being the adventurous sort we settled on the Mount, which seemed to be fairly busy. As we walked in we noticed everyone had their coats on ... the reason being that the cold winters winds easily penetrated into the restaurant but I am a boy from Buffalo my coat went off even as my dining partners remained bundled. But that's the lost star in the review because every other element was definitely top notch! Five star! Totally pleasing and a rewarding evening of good food served by people who cared. They could tell that we were novices in exploring the Himalayan cuisine so the entire cooking process, level of spicing, and even the pronunciations were explained to us. We started with the lollipops delved into the Chicken Manchau and Himalayan Crab Makai soup totally forgetting about the interior temperature because the meal was warming us up with awesome flavors! Our entrees were all delicious but what truly made it special was the staff continuing to stop by to check in on us and offering to change anything we might not like. Oh we liked! We liked a lot! I got a mouth full of raw dough first bite so that was an immediate turn off. So I tried a second one just to see if maybe it was just a mishap ,Nope same trash - mouth full of raw flour type dough. And they didn't taste fresh the chicken had a weird texture. Anyway moving on. Got a lunch special came with mango lassy. - lassy was good , chicken and noodle was decent but not worth the price ! And that salad was so wilted and just a spoonful I was not even willing to touch that for fear of getting sick. Moving on ....i order the vegetable -vegetable moon sizzling -just Yuck is all I can say about these. The sauce was owful and there was no vegetables in the darn thing just a pocket of dough with some cabbage scattered inside , the sauce was ketchup vinegar and peppers. Yuck. I am perplexed - why is this place so highly rated? Upon arrival at noon on a Friday, we were the only customers. My experience began with receiving a water glass with a 2-inch red lipstick stain on the rim. Not a great first impression... The Makai soup appetizer which was included with the Lunch Specials consisted of a few kernels of canned corn in a glutenous, overly cornstarched bowl of one of *the worst* soups I have ever been served in a restaurant. (See pic below) The waitress described it as being "creamy" but there wasn't a hint of cream or dairy in it. Just cornstarch, water, sugar, salt, and probably some of the liquid from the can of corn, if I had to guess. The Paneer Mount Masala Lunch Special ($8.95) was a surprisingly stingy portion - 8 very small pieces of Paneer in an unappealing reddish and glutenous sauce, and two separate scoops of pickled vegetables and a slaw of sorts. The pickled vegetables were the best thing on the plate. The Fish Manchurian Lunch Special ($8.95) was also a very small portion - maybe 5 small pieces of fish (no more than 4-5 oz.) in another very glutenous sauce. The fish itself had an almost Inari-sushi-like texture, as if it had been lightly battered and fried yesterday, refrigerated overnight, and then tossed in a wok today. I didn't think this was very good at all. What I didn't realize was that the Fish Manchurian Lunch Special is served in their "wet" style by default. After seeing all of the interesting Yelp photos of the "dry" version of this dish, I had my mind set on getting it "dry" before I arrived. So I made a last ditch effort to save my lunch experience and asked the server if I could switch my "wet" Fish Manchurian for the "dry" version instead. She agreed, but alas, when it came to the table it really wasn't much better. The dish is just too salty and oddly textured (that Inari effect I mentioned). If eating at Mount Marsala doesn't put your digestive track on overdrive, then you've got an iron stomach. Days after eating here, I am still feeling the effects of the spicy. Sitting close to the kitchen, besides the music and other patrons, there is this wonderful sound of the wok utensils hitting the wok during the process of stir frying. These folks know how to use a wok properly. The Masala Fish Finger, Momo Fry and Handsome Chicken Lollipops were all delicious. The fish especially was my favorite. While deep fried, the breading was crunchy and properly drained and spiced prior to serving. The fish flesh was well seasoned and flaky. My dinner companion and I were fighting over the last few pieces. The Momo Fry with ground chicken was awesome. The dumpling skin was a good thickness and served well to soak up all the spicy sauce. The ground chicken filling was perfect. This was delivered on a super hot fry plate that thickened the spicy sauce. Lastly the Handsome Chicken Lollipops were delicious BUT, some pieces were a tad bit over breaded. It came with what seemed like a mayo spicy sauce that was overpowering so careful how much dunking you do. The mix fried rice was a knockout punch to the gut. So much spice, perfect rice, nice serving to share. It is rare that each component of the fried rice can stand on its own. The peas, the diced carrots, onions, egg, beef, shrimp, cabbage, every component seared in a wok perfectly stands on its own. No overcooked or mushy veggies; carrots or peas! That's a sign of great wok expertise. Last of the notables, the chili fish entree is also delicious. The "American" Chop Suey was a major disappointment. Overly sweet, the noodles did not absorb the flavor of the sauce and thus seemed rather awkward. This was left behind almost completely. I'd steer clear of this dish in the future as I don't think this is for me. A Goldeneye Noodle dish was similarly disappointing in that the noodles were too al dente. They were not reconstituted fully prior to wok frying and as a result the noodles were a bit stiff. The Pina Colada drink served as a great palate softener to counter the spicy blast. Definitely did the trick! Finally the staff are really friendly and provided good recommendations. Mount Masala is a definite gem. read more

We visited as a group of four on a Thursday night. When we arrived at 7:30 it was fairly empty, but a decent amount of customers arrived after 8, if that factors into your planning. Service was simple, not fast but not too slow either. The food itself was good, for my first time having Himalayan it reminded me of good Chinese food. The spice level is serious, and our friend who does like a kick was content at a 3. The 1 really had no spice if you're concerned about that. If not for Yelp I would not have known Mount Masala even existed. My daughter and I were looking for somewhere new and inexpensive and up popped Mount Masala! The restaurant is in the former Tiffin, and is located on White Horse Road where there are now numerous dining options. The ambiance of the restaurant itself was very clean, pleasant and simple. We were a little worried when we found ourselves the only people dining in, but soon two or three other tables arrived and Mount Masala was also doing a decent take away business. We ordered two appetizers, a soup, a chicken dish and noodle dish. As other Yelpers have written, Mount Masala has both Indian and Chinese influences or Indo-Chinese. My daughter and myself like food with heat (not so much my wife) and the food here was not toned down for Americans. We asked for a 3 out 5 heat or spice level and that was about as much as we could handle. The nice Himalayan ice cream we ordered for dessert took care of the fire in our mouths. Service was extremely friendly and helpful, and our service people explained the numerous options on Mount Masala's menu and made suggestions and recommendations. "Finally a local restaurant that can really deliver spicy food" is right and it made me super happy!!! Mount Masala is Himalayan Cuisine Indian Style. Best I could describe it is an Indian-Chinese-Nepalese fusion. While many of the dishes come spicy, you can ask them to make it mild for you, or in my case, EXTRA spicy! Beef Mount Masala Chowmein (extra spicy) - crunchy veggies, tender beef, deceivingly spicy as 3/4 through the dish is when I started to get a really good mouth burn! Chicken Spicy Sour Soup (extra spicy) - somewhat similar to chinese hot and sour soup but a richer broth than I am used to and not filled with mushrooms. The chicken shredded on bite as well. Great flavor! Paneer Tikka Masala Fusion (extra spicy) - simply delicious Paneer in a rich and bold masala. Classic rich and bold Indian styled dish. Brought the flavor and spice! Fried Paneer Wonton - flaky, crunchy and cheesey wontons accompanied by a sweet and spicy tangy dipping sauce. The fusion really comes to play with this dish! I took the recommendation from the food reviewer of the Philadelphia Inquirer and tried this unique restaurant. I had 3 dishes. Their rendition of Hot and Sour Soup was easily top 3 I've tasted through the years. Superb rich broth with cubes of beef soaking in the lovely flavor. The multi dementional flavor was terrific. I only wished it had more zing, more spice to it. The soup was really good. I then had Momo which were delicate dumplings which were light as a feather. They were stuffed with chicken in a slamming sauce. Loved it. To finish up the meal the order of fried rice was another winner. Delicious. As a super nice gester the server brought me a lovely and flavorful drink on the house. I think it had yogurt and maybe tumeric?
