Jan, was my waitress. I don't know if she was having a bad day and/or was racist. I was feeling RACIST energy and rudeness. She never came to check on me until she presented the bill. The Mount Vernon is a Somerville institution. When a friend comes to town and we go out to eat, I'll take them here for their initiation. There's parking out back to make it a bit easier when it's too cold to walk. The wait staff has always been welcoming, friendly and attentive. Most have been working there for years, so I'm sure to tip them well. Overall, the food here is affordable and prepared well. I'm not a fan of the peas as a side because they come out of a can, but everything else is pretty darn good. They have lobster specials I keep an eye out for. I had a lobster roll at Mt. Vernon. Wow. I ordered a lobster roll for take out during a craving on a work day. When I picked it up, the bartender told me it would be the best lobster roll ever. And yes, it was amazing! I would say the roll was a little crunchy for my taste but the lobster salad inside was fantastic. Lightly dressed and huge chunks. This was at least half a lobster. I also got my side as half fries half onion rings and both were really good. Soft batter and decently sized orings so they didn't fall apart. From other reviewers, it sounds like Mount Vernon's had a difficult time during the height of the pandemic but I think it's safe to say that they have rebounded back! It's a wonderful testament to old school pub diners and the folks who work there are just as warm and charming as the place! My husband and I came here for a random Wednesday night dinner and am happy to say that we now have a local place to hop into if we ever desire the literal "meat and potato" kind of dinner! We started with crab stuffed mushrooms (they were priced so reasonably but honestly didn't taste much of crab) and their clam chowder (solid, but nothing mind blowing), and shared a roast beef plate (with mashed potatoes and veggie of the day, squash) and fish n' chips for the main entrees. The best tasting dishes was the roast beef (super affordable and in a delicious marinade!), and the fried fish. For some reason the mashed potatoes and french fries were very under seasoned so although it wasn't offensive, it definitely was not as delicious as it could've been. Bottom line? Affordable prices, good portions and even more affordable booze. It's a solid neighborhood joint but nothing really to go out of your way for. Will have to try the lobsters sometime! read more

It was such a good experience that we ended up eating there 2 of the 4 nights we were in Boston. The first night we went, we didn't know what to expect. Our waitress was super nice as we told her what our mission was. She was game. There were 3 of us and we all got the twin Lobster Special. At the time of our trip in July, the special was $14.99 for two 1.5 lb live lobsters! They don't come with any sides but they serve you huge popovers with butter on the house. I've always wanted to go to an all you can eat lobster buffet but now I know it wouldn't be worth the money because me and my nephew ordered two more lobsters each and I almost tapped out after the 3rd lobster. They're more filling than I thought. I only made myself eat the 4th one because I didn't want to waste it and didn't want to take it back to the AirBNB. This is the first restaurant I ever ate at when I moved to Boston the summer of 2018, so it holds a special place in my heart. I've sampled clam chowder at numerous Boston restaurants. None could hold a candle to Mount Vernon's creamy chowder packed with hearty clams and potatoes. I once ordered a gallon of it to serve to out-of-town family; we all loved it! But not yesterday. Though there was a hearty helping of clams and potatoes, the sauce was very thin and extraordinarily salty. It tasted nothing like their usual rich, perfect chowder. So disappointed. I also ordered the Salmon Rockefeller (salmon topped with lobster, spinach, and Hollandaise sauce). The salmon would have been fine if it had been seasoned. The lobster and Hollandaise sauce were tasteless. The mashed potatoes tasted odd and bland (how do you mess up mashed potatoes? All you need is butter, salt, pepper, and garlic powder). The squash was similarly tasteless. Everything needed more TLC. I also ordered a platter of fried clams with onion rings, french fries, and coleslaw. There is nothing I love more in New England than fried clams. But there were just awful. Each one contained tons of sand and just tasted like straight ocean water. Yuck! I'm a really understanding and generous diner, especially right now with Covid-19. (Hell, I left a 30% tip on a meal I hadn't even eaten)! But this meal left a bad taste in my mouth, both literally and figuratively. I genuinely hope Mount Vernon turns things around and puts a little TLC (and salt, and pepper) into their meals. Heading to airport on a Sunday, traffic was a cluster, so we decided to stop at the Mt.Vernon for a beer and a bite. The food and service was as great and friendly as I remember. The Mt.Vernin Saute chicken was delicious! Melt in your mouth chicken, Spinach, tomatoes, garlic, onion, feta with olive oil....to die for! Baked seafood pie was just as tantalizing! We didn't get the brunch, but we checked it out and wow! For $19.99 they had everything from oysters and steamers, to prime rib, seafood Newburgh and dreamy chocolate desserts...holy moly! Now, for the lobster...two medium sized lobsters showed up at our table about 10 minutes or so after we finished our appetizers. I was expecting small ones, so that was a pleasant surprise! I went there alone, and instead the most famous lobster set (two 1b lobster for $26.99), I ordered the steak and 1.5b lobster combo for $29.99 and a cup of New England Clam Chowder for $4.99. The soup is good, but a little salty for me. The lobster is fantastic, it's pretty fresh and they are happy to help you eat the lobster. The steak is also good, and really big!
