We were thankful that we were able to still have dinner even though they closed at 9pm and it was minutes from closing. The guy who told us its okay we can sit you was very nice. The only thing that I didnt care for was that they had Ritz for crackers. They did have nice warm bread with butter. I decided to get their famous chicken pot pie which was very very delicious. It came with a side of potatoes. My husband decided to get the Haddock , along with zucchini and carrots which was very tasty. The Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner wasn't just a lunch; it was lunch and dinner. The turkey was moist and tender, and the mashed potatoes were well prepared, flavorful without being overly seasoned. This place is just full of Winthrop loyalty and royalty. It feels like walking into the past when you enter.. They bring you cheese and crackers. The waiters are never overly friendly if they don't know you but that makes it very Winthrop. The food may need some salt but the Mac and cheese, pot pie, and the flint stone prime rib are great. There are a few adjectives that come to mind when it comes to the Winthrop Arms: Delicious food, consistent ly good, affable waitstaff and relaxing ambiance. When it comes to Prime Rib, the Arms is the best bar none. I've had Prime Rib all over the US and thoughout Europe and the Winthrop Arms outshines them all. Lucky for me I live only a few miles from the Arms but I would travel an hour for this meal. In addition to the Prime Rib, the Mac and cheese is out of this world as is their Chicken Pot Pie affectionately called Doc Pies. We occasionally take them home. My wife also sales the veal is amazing. Visiting the Winthrop Arms is coming home for me. It reminds me of the movie Somewhere in Time w Christopher Reeves. The Oak panel wall decor of The Arms is timeless and if you don't look out the window to see the cars, u can easily go back in time to the 40s and 50s. read more

Visiting my clan in Winthrop, we bellied up to the bar for some appetizers. Our first selection of ravioli was not available, so we chose scallops wrapped in bacon and coconut shrimp. Both were so good, we ordered a second order of the shrimp as we had devoured the first so quickly. Service was affable, but a bit slow considering there were only three other customers when we entered. Football was on the TVs, and we asked to turn them down because of the echo. Been going to the Arms for years. Got takeout tonight and was so disappointed. Ordered two burgers both medium well. Both came rare. One was supposed to have grilled onions, came with none. Also ordered a chicken sandwich with mayo and cheese and instead received a chicken caprese. This has happened more than once with takeout orders. My husband I had dinner at Winthrop Arms last night. We both started with martinis at the bar. The bar is beautiful and the martinis are exceptional. We made our way to the dining room where we started with coconut shrimp and scallops in bacon, excellent, both served very hot. The bacon was so crisp the scallops were plump and delicious. I had the baked stuffed shrimp the shrimp were cooked perfectly, they also have the best mashed potatoes. My husband had the steak tips, They were plentiful and very flavorful. Our server was knowledgeable and great. My only complaint is the lighting in the dining room is a bit too bright but it still was a perfect evening. We look forward to returning very soon. read more

We stayed here while visiting Salem from Arizona for my 40th. Everything was perfect. Staff were warm and friendly, rooms were spacious and spotless, food was incredible. I'm not really sure how to rate this experience, but I decided on 4 stars because our waiter who served us outside deserves 10 stars, and the food was great as always. Unfortunately, I can't give the overall experience 5 stars due to a horrible situation with a racist couple sitting next to us, and the owner, who gave them a free meal after they berated the waiter. I'd like to give the owner the benefit of the doubt and hope that he didn't have the full story when he went outside and gave the rude couple a free meal (a meal of expensive cocktails and lobster) after they yelled at the poor waiter for the "cold food." Mind you, we were sitting outside on an evening that got pretty chilly--what do you expect to happen to your food? The worst part was the racism, however, and watching that be met with a free meal. This horrible couple felt entitled enough to yell, "Do you even speak English?" to the waiter, who was just trying to help them. We were all in shock, and when we saw the owner come out, we fully expected the couple to be told to leave. As mentioned, they unfortunately didn't only get to stay, but their meal was comped, and they continued to have more food brought out. We didn't hear everything the owner said to the couple, but we did hear him say, "We want you to enjoy your meal." Seriously? It was also really not okay that the waiter who was just met with bigotry had to keep waiting on these people for the rest of the night. They tried to apologize to him, because I guess they felt satisfied with their free meal... All of this to say, I've been coming to the Arms since I was a kid, and I've always loved it here. But after what I witnessed, I left feeling disappointed and honestly pretty shaken. No one (especially not a hardworking member of your staff) should have to endure that kind of abuse, let alone continue serving the people responsible. If the owner is reading this, I sincerely hope that couple is never welcomed back, and more importantly, that a real apology was given to the waiter who was forced to carry on with grace after being treated so horribly. read more

My husband and I have heard good things about this place and finally decided to try it and I'm thankful we did. We started out with ritz crackers along with a pub cheese, and then we received a fresh loaf of bread with butter! All for free to start. We order drinks and my martini came alongside a mini pour of the extra. We had potato wedges and meatballs which were amazing, and then we split the lobster pie with spinach and mashed potatoes. And I like a chicken pot pie with an all around crust, not just one on the top. Avoid if You Value Your Sanity! I've been to this restaurant multiple times, but after my recent experience with the hostess Emma, it was clear that "hospitality" was not part of her vocabulary. No smile, no greeting, just a cold, "How many?" Okay, Emma, we're here to eat, not to get interrogated, then when we asked if we could wait at the bar for a table, she stared at us and said nothing. After an awkward silence, she muttered something about "maybe" and proceeded to shuffle away. We ended up waiting 20 minutes watching her chat with the kitchen staff about who knows what instead of acknowledging us. Once we were finally seated, she plopped our menus on the table as if they were an afterthought and didn't even ask if we needed anything else. It felt like she was doing us a "huge favor" by letting us sit down. To top it off, when we left, she barely looked up from her phone to say goodbye. Emma clearly has better things to do than work here, so do yourself a favor--avoid this place if you don't want your dining experience ruined by a hostess who could use a crash course in basic human decency. Last night for date night, my hunny and I went to Winthrop Arms Hotel & Restaurant for dinner- we hadn't been there in a while! On Thursday's, they have $1.25 oysters; they were quite small (it's difficult to tell from the pic), but they were fresh & delicious! Typically when I go out to dinner I'll order a seafood entree, but people always rave about Doc's chicken pot pie, so my curiousity got the best of me and I ordered it. It was SO good! It doesn't necessarily look like a big portion, but it really was- I took most of it home! The mashed potatoes that came with it were quite good, but still not as good as my late mother's (nothing beats hers IMO). This is TRUE comfort food for sure, and I'd definitely get this again! My hunny had the lobster pasta that was on special- the portion was good, there was plenty of lobster in it, and the flavor was great. The only problem with it was that it was quite evident that the lobster meat had been previously frozen. Once lobster meat has been frozen, it changes its texture (not for the better by any means), and that was clearly the case here. Cocktails (not pictured): He had a blueberry martini, and I the lemon drop martini- both were great! Service: Our server was very friendly, but a bit slow considering the place wasn't really busy at the time we were there. Thankfully, we weren't in any big rush, so it wasn't a big deal. Cleanliness: Generally speaking, everything was well kept. I judge a lot of the cleanliness by how well the bathroom is kept, but I didn't use it, so I can't speak to that. We had a good night at the arms. We had a young waitress who was kind and attentive. We get cheese and ritz to start for free and it was delish. Then, we ordered watermelon margaritas and WOW- they were unreal. I will be back specifically for this and our appetizer, the buffalo cauliflower. It was crispy, had a good sauce that wasn't too salty, and had HUGE pieces with a good side sauce. I got the lobster 3 ways and it was pretty good, the scallops were delicious but the lobster was quite over cooked. The Winthrop Arms is an Old-ie, but Good-ie! My wife and I love coming in here for the martinis but sometimes we dine in as well and the food is outstanding. You really get a lot of food for the money too which is always nice in today's economy. The vibe is definitely older with the classic leather booth seating and bread and butter served with the menu. It was my mother's 94th birthday and her request was to have lunch at Winthrop Arms. We started off with a few appetizers- Fried Calamari- which I'll rate a solid 10 - Stuffed Mushrooms- solid 8- Coconut Shrimp- solid 10 and a side of meatballs- solid 4.5 not so tasty. Brother, Al , mother, and myself had the Turkey Dinner, Solid 9- my two nephews had a pasta and Lobster Dish that looked and smelled amazing- they rated it a solid 8.5, my sister in law had a cheeseburger that she ordered medium well when it arrived it was cooked medium rare and the taste, to salty. That wasn't a big hit, sadly, for her. We ordered a strawberry shortcake for dessert - the biscuit was stale but the Ice cream, strawberries and whip cream were delicious. Would we go back? Until during one of the waitress' uncommon visits to the table showed us the Special . A prime Rib Special $39.99 comes with a potato and a salad. I had to settle for peppercorn that came in a container with three drops in it. And on top of that , the cherry tomatoes were rotten. For the Main event my prime rib they told me that only the end piece was left . I agreed to have it. Only to have it served to me extremely grey and burnt. Not a single drop of blood in the meat whatsoever. And on the side, potato wedges.... also overcooked to hell. So over cooked all the potato filling was emptied from several of the wedges. My whole party complained to the waitress. She didn't seem to give a damn. Not one bit of embarrassment. Seeing as it took a half hour of us wanting refills on our drinks we were not surprised. I do not recommend this place one bit. Their menu though I was told was changed and improved since I came here pre pandemic did not improve one bit. Everything was either screwed up or cooked like it was intentionally bland for senior citizens . If you want some of the best comfort food you've ever had, come here. It's not just good. It's phenomenal. The chicken pot pie is amazing and fresh and perfectly cooked with a flaky crust. The max and cheese is really really good with a buttered bread crumb crusty topping. The kids burger is bigger than my child's face. The drinks were even good. The prices are reasonable, the quality and quantity high. The decor is old school 1920s titanic but clean and well kept. The service is great and friendly. And the desserts are massive and high quality. This place will make you leave feeling like you just got hugged by your grandmother. Highly recommended. You'll be fed like a king. My husband and I had dinner at the Arms tonight. We opted to sit outside on the porch since the weather is so beautiful! There was only one other party out there (2 people), so it was quiet and perfect for conversation. I order the Swordfish (Grilled) with asparagus and mixed vegetables. It was outstanding. I loved grilled swordfish and this foot the bill. I am currently not drinking alcohol, so we asked our server about non-alcoholic beer options. He indicated that none were available. I ended up having unsweetened iced tea. Many of the other Winthrop restaurants offer at bare minimum, Heineken non-alcoholic beer. Actually, there are several craft beer companies that are making incredible non-alcoholic IPA's, Porters and Stouts. Even Sam Adams now makes a non-alcoholic IPA. Just something to think about. From the beautiful lobby atmosphere with a view of the ocean, to the gorgeous mahogany wood bar, to fantastic food and fabulous service! I could not have chosen a better place to bring my mom for her 85th birthday. Their bone-in swordfish special and broiled seafood plate were amazing. You could not beat the price for the huge portions of high quality food. You never had to look for your server because your table was constantly checked to make sure nothing was needed.
