    Potato wedges

My husband and I have heard good things about this place and finally decided to try it and I'm thankful we did. We started out with ritz crackers along with a pub cheese, and then we received a fresh loaf of bread with butter! All for free to start. We order drinks and my martini came alongside a mini pour of the extra. We had potato wedges and meatballs which were amazing, and then we split the lobster pie with spinach and mashed potatoes. Everything was amazing. The service was great (I was even able to call an hour ahead for a reservation) and it was a little loud early on from kids but it quieted down half way through the meal. Prices are completely reasonable! We will definitely be back!

Last night for date night, my hunny and I went to Winthrop Arms Hotel & Restaurant for dinner- we hadn't been there in a while! On Thursday's, they have $1.25 oysters; they were quite small (it's difficult to tell from the pic), but they were fresh & delicious! Typically when I go out to dinner I'll order a seafood entree, but people always rave about Doc's chicken pot pie, so my curiousity got the best of me and I ordered it. It was SO good! It doesn't necessarily look like a big portion, but it really was- I took most of it home! The mashed potatoes that came with it were quite good, but still not as good as my late mother's (nothing beats hers IMO). This is TRUE comfort food for sure, and I'd definitely get this again! My hunny had the lobster pasta that was on special- the portion was good, there was plenty of lobster in it, and the flavor was great. The only problem with it was that it was quite evident that the lobster meat had been previously frozen. Once lobster meat has been frozen, it changes its texture (not for the better by any means), and that was clearly the case here. Cocktails (not pictured): He had a blueberry martini, and I the lemon drop martini- both were great! Service: Our server was very friendly, but a bit slow considering the place wasn't really busy at the time we were there. Thankfully, we weren't in any big rush, so it wasn't a big deal. Cleanliness: Generally speaking, everything was well kept. I judge a lot of the cleanliness by how well the bathroom is kept, but I didn't use it, so I can't speak to that. Ambiance: It's simple but I like it! It's also nice to be able to smell the ocean air as you come in and out of there- heavenly! Summary: It's definitely a place to go, and we'll certainly be back!

Quahog topped with bacon! Looks smaller in photo. This is delish and filling!!

Cozy place - just what I was looking for while visiting Winthrop and dining alone. The service excellent while not being overly attentive (a pet peeve when I'm eating alone - like if I wanted company I'd have it) Any way - the food was excellent. I didn't have room to try everything I wanted so I am going to have to go back and lucky me - they have a st Patty's day dinner! I had the quahog with bacon - simply divine. I ordered a spicy margarita priced at $13 on the menu but was $15 on my bill. No biggie but check your tab

We had a good night at the arms. We had a young waitress who was kind and attentive. We get cheese and ritz to start for free and it was delish. Then, we ordered watermelon margaritas and WOW- they were unreal. I will be back specifically for this and our appetizer, the buffalo cauliflower. It was crispy, had a good sauce that wasn't too salty, and had HUGE pieces with a good side sauce. I got the lobster 3 ways and it was pretty good, the scallops were delicious but the lobster was quite over cooked. I got it with spinach and lemon rice and broccoli- both were very good and the rice was HUGE! My friend got the steak tips and they were flavorful and cooked to her liking.

The Winthrop Arms is an Old-ie, but Good-ie! My wife and I love coming in here for the martinis but sometimes we dine in as well and the food is outstanding. You really get a lot of food for the money too which is always nice in today's economy. The vibe is definitely older with the classic leather booth seating and bread and butter served with the menu. I never leave here hungry! The variety is always great as well - I suggest any of their steak dishes or the chicken cooked under a brick! As always the service was great as well.

One half hour later, our waitress finally came to take our order after walking back and forth ignoring us for that 30 minutes. When our waitress took our orders, there was no apology for the long wait either. The food we ate was good, but not worth the wait. The portions were generous, and I couldn't finish mine. One sis ordered lobster roll with slaw, pickles and fries. She found it to be underwhelming, particularly the texture. I had the Dryft cheeseburger covered in caramelized onions and fries as a side. It was a big burger, well cooked, and I deconstructed it, to have less bun. The plentiful onions were a nice addition, and I liked the fries. The other sis ordered chicken under a brick, which was a fried boneless chicken breast under mashed potatoes, chicken jus, and brussels. She substituted asparagus for the brussels. Sis was highly satisfied with her whole meal and ate it all. Our host had a salad, but I didn't catch which one. It was large, not particularly noteworthy, and she didn't finish it either. The place was really noisy, which made conversation difficult. One other thing I noticed: all the female staff were wearing very short black skirts or shorts while the male staff members wore long black pants. I didn't inquire about a dress code or uniform, but it seemed sexist to me.

For a little restaurant on a quiet street corner in Winthrop, you'd never expect the vibrant atmosphere just beyond the front door. Italian restaurants are a dime a dozen in the Greater Boston Area, but owner Lisa, her family, and her staff have succeeded in making Vuolo's a destination restaurant. You better bring an appetite because their menu demands nothing less. I could fill up on just the crusty bread and roasted garlic oil alone. My top two appetizers are probably the tender meatballs and perfectly crispy mozzarella fritti. If you need some greens, the Caesar salad is perfect for sharing. As for entrees, it's usually a toss-up between the chicken parm and gnocchetti, unless it's October, when I only have eyes for the divine pumpkin ravioli. (That is a reminder to always review their monthly and Monday/Tuesday specials.) While all of their desserts are amazing, the crème brûlée and tiramisu are standouts. For those that imbibe, Vuolo's array of cocktails will truly blow your hair back. Beverage Director Joe is a wizard that knows how to satisfy any palate. Not only do they nail all the classics, but their inventive cocktail creations are not to be missed. Their creamy martinis (espresso, pistachio, and pumpkin in the fall) are the best I've had anywhere. I also really love Ol' Buddy Ol' Pal, their version of an old fashioned. In both taste and presentation, Vuolo's cocktails give any popular cocktail bar in the city a run for its money. The caliber of dining and food options in Winthrop has improved in recent years, and I would say that Vuolo's was the one to kickstart that movement. Needless to say, I feel just a tad spoiled having them so close to home. Nothing beats a satisfying meal in a cozy environment with some of the friendliest customer service around. Whether I'm planning a birthday outing or just want a casual weekday dinner, Vuolo's is always a top contender.

If you stick with the seafood, you're going to have a great meal. That said, keep in mind it is a seafood restaurant. They have chicken wings on the menu, we figured we'd get them to share until the food came out.. They were honestly terrible. The order we received came with six extremely small, overcooked pieces that were so dry and tough looking they weren't even edible. Just looking at them we didn't bother as they weren't at all appetizing. I'm not sure if it was a bad day, a supply issue, or something else entirely, but they were a complete miss. Speaking of, service can be hit or miss as well. This past weekend, we had a wonderful server who was friendly, attentive, and made the experience enjoyable. The visit before that, however, was the exact opposite. Our server--who seemed to be either a manager or assistant manager--spent nearly all of his time chatting up a table of women, clearly trying to get phone numbers. Trying to get his attention for anything felt like a major inconvenience. What motivated me to write this today is that not only was the service good on our latest visit, but we also tried the fried seafood instead of the usual seafood boil--and it was absolutely excellent, and not at all expensive. Both the fried shrimp plate and the fried clam plate were outstanding. If you haven't tried their fried options, or not in the mood to put on gloves and dig into a seafood boil, don't sleep on their fried seafood. It was surprisingly impressive. Overall: great seafood, inconsistent service, avoid the wings entirely, and definitely give the fried dishes a try.

Unless you wanna wait an hour or so, it's best to arrive 30min before they open to beat the rush. We ordered the oysters (they've got a variety so you can choose), clam chowder, lobster roll, cioppino, and johnnycake. Oysters were fine, but the clam chowder was absolutely dismal. Not sure what happened, especially since it's so highly rated, but it was extremely watery and almost completely unseasoned. It could've definitely used salt at the very least. If I didn't know it was from Neptune, I'd have given it a 2/10. To my relief, the lobster roll was the total opposite. Succulent, juicy, heavenly. It was like being in Maine. The cioppino was also very good. The Johnnycake was an interesting but fun way to end the meal. It's a sweet pancake-like cornmeal covered in a syrupy glaze and topped with smoked bluefish paste, crème fraiche and caviar. I've never had anything like it. Nothing was super overpriced, but I personally prefer next door (Paulini's), which is much cheaper and while it isn't as good, it also doesn't require waiting in an hour in line.
