Did you know that West Virginia is lousy with bears? I did not know this before visiting West Virginia. Did you know that I am incredibly afraid of bears? I am, and I agreed to stay in a cabin in the West Virginia woods without doing any bear research beforehand. I learned about the bears -- all 14,000 of them roaming the state -- a day before I was supposed to stay at Mountain Creek Cabins, which are located in the middle of the woods in Bruceton Mills. I was ... a little anxious about my stay, you could say. Never mind that a bear attack has never been recorded in the state of West Virginia. There's always a first, right? And it could be me! I'm writing this review unmauled, with all of my limbs intact, and with great memories of my stay at Mountain Creek Cabins. Staying at our cabin was one of the highlights of my visit to the area, and my kids agree: We all loved staying here. There are eight cabins on the property, so we weren't as isolated as I thought we'd be. We weren't isolated, but we were also far enough away from other people that we felt very much like we had lots of privacy. We stayed in the White Tail cabin, which can sleep five with one king bed, two twin beds and a rollaway bed. The twin beds are upstairs, but everything else is downstairs, including a living room with a big TV connected to Roku, a push-button fireplace, a full kitchen and dining table, and a restroom. The kitchen has everything you need to cook and eat at the cabin. The living room has a cabinet with board games. We played one of them (Rummikub) and loved it so much that we ended up buying it once we got home. There's also free and fast wifi, which is important to each person in my family. The decorations in the cabin are sparse, but what decor there is included Bible verses and deer paintings, which is definitely a choice. I was not blown away by the aesthetics of this cabin, but it was the garish lighting that really messed me up. There's one soft lamp in the living room, and everything else is bright, cool, alarming overhead lighting. If you're a person who notices lighting like I do, this place will have you all effed up. My advice: Turn on the lamp, turn on the little light above the stove, and just be OK with the place being a little dark. Your only choice is this or prison lighting. Every cabin comes with its own hot tub, which my children used multiple times during our stay. It was immaculate and steaming when we checked into our cabin, which was much appreciated after a long drive to get to the cabin. The hot tub overlooks the woods, so it was nice to sit in the hot tub and see nothing but trees and a small creek that runs through the property. Well, it was nice for my kids to do that -- I was standing outside on the deck, looking out for bears. I was not about to let the bears dine on Indiana-children soup. All of the cabins have access to a free laundry room, plus there are firewood bundles and eggs (?!?!) that you can purchase on the honor system. We had a great time at Mountain Creek Cabins. It was so relaxing to stay at a place that had everything we needed. I never did end up seeing a bear, so I would stay here again without hesitation. read more

Had a wonderful three-night stay in the Shawnee cabin. Used the cabin as a home base for my Wisp snowboarding trip with the girl I'm dating. The cabin has a fire pit out front, a front porch, and a back porch that's covered with a hot tub. There are two cabins close by on either side but it still feels private, especially the hot tub. It's a little weird that the door to the back porch and the kitchen window don't have curtains but I guess the trees probably blocked some or all of the view in. It's a cabin so don't expect a ton of room, but it's cozy and there is still plenty of space for two people. A family of four would be fine, but unless you're super close I wouldn't recommend two couples sharing the Shawnee cabin. There's a couch and TV but the TV doesn't really turn much (not a big deal). TV has Roku built in and there is dish satellite channels. There's plenty of heat, with two space heaters and an electric fireplace, which is basically another heater. The kitchen has basically everything you need. There's a small oven and an electric stove (that takes a while). There's also a tiny dishwasher which is nice. The fridge was turned on right before we arrived so it took like six hours to cool down. I wish they turned it on earlier but it wasn't a big deal. There's a coffee maker that can make kcups or regular coffee, and they provide a bunch of kcups. There's also salt and pepper, as well as aluminum foil. The bed was super comfy and we slept great all three nights. Bathroom was standard and worked fine. Hot tub was the true MVP of the trip. There's nothing better than ending a long day with a cold beer and a hot soak. Don't forget to hydrate too! The hot tub smelled a bit weird but we got used to it. Set that bad boy to 104° and you're good to go. It snowed a little and we don't have all wheel drive. All the driveways seems to be on an incline so we had to park strategically on the road that splits to the different cabins. They recommend AWD but if there's less than 4" of snow, you probably will be fine. The snow was beautiful! The owners/managers were hard to get a hold of. We called a couple times to get in touch but did not hear back at all. In the end, it was fine because the email we got after booking was very detailed and there's a binder on top of the fridge with more information. Note: wifi password was on the side of the fridge, not the front. As you're entering, follow the instructions on your email, and not your google maps/Waze/etc. Just remember to take exit 15 and take that route. As of early 2021, Verizon and TMobile had service until the last five minutes of the drive and no service at all around the cabins. There are no gas stations or grocery stores remotely close. I recommend getting food and gas in Frostburg or Cumberland (coming from DC) or Morgantown (if you come from West/North/South). Apparently one pizza place delivers to the cabins but we didn't order. I definitely recommend coming to stay at Mountain Creek Cabins and I think I'd love to come back in the future. read more

I"m knocking my review down to 3 stars yet still I know I'll probably be back because the cabins are very cute inside and we enjoy hiking in Cooper's Rock. We stayed in the Black Bear cabin and we loved it, but there were a few problems this time. :( 1) They send the info with the code for the keypad in just a regular confirmation email so its very easy to miss. As mentioned in one of the not recommended reviews on this site (just click to it), the site say the key will be in the cabin. And this was true when we booked the Maple Tree cabin. But not true of the black bear cabin. There's no wifi or cell reception down by the cabins, so my friend had to drive up the road to get a signal and check his email for the code. And of course it was cold and raining while all of this went down. 2) I dont know how often the water in the hot tub gets changed, but our water was GROSS. You expect some debris; its an outdoor hot tub. I'd be okay with leaves or an occasional twig. There was hair everywhere, and a pony tail holder, in the hot tub. Our solution was to crank the jets up and hope that would make the filter work harder. Then we just had a LOT of wine before getting in the hot tub bc damn it, I was getting in the hot tub. Lastly... You know, relaxing vacation getaway reading material means different things to different people. I might think you could leave a WV travel guide on a bedside. Or...maybe a book about bird watching. That kind of goes with a cabin. Instead we were left a copy of "The Case Against Liberal Compassion" on our night stand, which was written by the author of "Never Enough, America's Limitless Welfare Sate." Hmm. I found this very ironic bc WV is basically one of the poorest states in the entire country and the little town you drive through to get to the cabins looks like District 12 from the Hunger Games. I don't mind that the owners have their views, but I want them to know that their pamphlet made excellent kindling. read more

First of all they pull a Bait and switch with you Watch out for the three day special thing because it will look like you are booking a 3 day package but when days are not available they book it anyhow. The place was cute but if I am paying extra for a hot tub it should be a functionable one. first if all you can tell the hot tub is old and only half the jets work if that and it was not clean!!! . Then there are steps to get down to fire pit which are dangerous and the outside lighting sucked. the beds were old and the bedding was old. To be a 5 star cabin everything has to be new and luxurious and this cabin was not!!! read more

The cabin is nice. However, multiple annoyances. They advertise the pizza shop that will deliver, however, it's unlikely you will have service to call. We have AT&T and had zero service. We drove out to find service and then found out that the delivery would be at least 2 hours. Also, the remote for the TV did not work. We tried multiple times and it was not connected. They also ask that you put dishes away and when we cooked dinner we realized everything was still in the dishwasher and not put away. We also called the number for questions regarding the area and got no answer. If you advertise things, they should be accurate and you should prove information on how to access those things or don't advertise them at all. read more

As with the other reviewer, we came here because we had a Groupon. I called months in advance to secure my reservation. We booked the Caleb cabin, which I really liked as it was a good distance from any other cabin. The cabins are quite secluded and there is no check-in, which I found a little odd. You just walk right into the cabin you have reserved and the door is open and the key is waiting for you. I suggest arriving during the day as the directions might be tough to follow in the dark the first time around. The best part of the cabins is that they have all the amenities you would need for a quiet weekend away. Our cabin was spotless as was the hot tub. The deck table and chairs weren't, but we didn't use them. The website has a lot of information about nearby attractions and there is a binder in the cabin with phone numbers for the various activities. I highly suggest checking out the hiking trails at Cooper's Rock (10 mins) or the Forks of Cheat Winery (30 mins). read more

The location was absolutely amazing with a nice Creek that ran through the back of the property. There were a couple concerns 1) the wifi internet worked half of the first night stay and never again. I only say this because I did not have my kids with me and if there was an emergency that's the only way to contact me. Otherwise I was ok with no service. We dined at Morgantown and shopped at grocery store there since it's close. Didn't even use the television...why would you trying to get away in a cabin stay?!?!?! The lights in the hot tub did not work, although initial inspection showed it to appear to be clean. The shower had a "damp basement" smell and probably could stand to have the curtain replaced. Seemed like a charming and enjoyable getaway so I purchased a Living Social deal for a stay, which had to be used prior to March 31st. Made the reservation for March 16th and 17th. The week before, I called and then emailed to inquire if linens were included, but received no answer or voice mail option, and no reply to my email. Then boom, a major storm is predicted for that week. After seeing numerous warnings against driving, I phoned Mountain Creek two days in advance and was basically told too bad, not his fault there's a storm - get a four wheel drive vehicle. I explained I do have a four wheel drive vehicle and it does not compensate for not being able to see where you're driving since poor visibility was predicted. On winding, hilly West Virginia roads, this would be a truly hazardous situation. He said three weeks' notice was required so he could rebook the cabin, then a few sentences later said all of his reservations had cancelled due to the storm, which contradicted he could have rebooked even with the required notice. The following week was fully booked so rescheduling prior to the voucher's expiration wasn't possible. He told me he would be taking the voucher, that I was "confused" about proper business practices, and offered no other solution. I could see charging a cancellation fee, or applying the money toward a stay in the future at the prime season rate, but to just keep the entire cost? I would strongly suggest you find a more ethical business to deal with, unless you don't mind that you could lose the entire amount of a non-occurring visit should you have an emergency which is "not their fault", and if you'd also like to be treated condescendingly in the process. I would also caution against purchasing Living Social getaways, since they seem to not mind dealing with dishonest merchants and simply sent a form email telling me I'm not eligible for a voucher refund. read more

My Family had a wonderful time at Mountain Creek Cabins this past weekend. We stayed 3 nights in the Shawnee Cabin. The hot tub on the covered back deck was great! It was very clean and was already turned on and hot when we arrived. Cabin was fully equipped with everything you will need. Coffee pot, dishwasher, microwave, electric stove/oven, full size fridge and all the tableware, plates, and cups you would need. Paper products were there which included toilet paper and paper towels. 4 bath towels, 4 wash clothes, 6 pillows and clean/fresh linens also. WiFi worked good. I had to walk toward the road to make phone calls with Verizon, but I knew that going in. You are very remote in these cabins which was exactly what we were looking for. We purchased their cut firewood which is located in a small wood shed further down the hill in front of a few other cabins. Each small bundle was $5. You just put the cash in the mailbox on the side of the wood shed or the note on the fridge said you could leave the cash in your cabin upon leaving also. There is also a great 24 hour laundry area further down the hill at the end of the property. Looked like brand new washers and dryers, but we did not need to use machines this weekend. There isn't an office to check into or out at. The owners will send you the key code via email to get in which was great! There is a binder of information in the cabin which contained the owners contact info if needed. We did not have any issues at all! Everything worked great and we have absolutely no complaints at all. We would definitely stay here again. Maybe even try out a few of the other cabins. My kids already eyed up the Cougar Cabin for next time. The owners also gave a military discount which was very much appreciated! Overall, we highly recommend Mountain Creek Cabins!! read more

We stayed here for two nights in August. Overall, the cabin was nice, not musty, and everything worked. However, I can't imagine is staying here when it's really hot outside--we had one window a/c unit that is on its last legs. There is no phone/cell service or internet in the cabins, but that's pretty much to be expected. The jacuzzi was nice and warm and the view from the back of the cabin is a pretty creek. You can see other cabins but they are a good distance away, maybe 40-50 feet. The one thing that made me uncomfortable about these cabins is that they are decorated in Jesus memorabilia. I think it is incredibly disrespectful to run a business that forces your guests to be berated by the religious beliefs of the owner, which visitors may not share. There were at least four pieces of religious decoration in and around the cabin and the key was on a Christian fish symbol. The abundance of religion, which seemed totally arbitrary since it's not apparent on the website, made the whole thing feel really uncomfortable. (I didn't dock the review for this aspect of it because it's more of a personal note.) Other than that, however, the stay was nice. Close to Cooper's Rock. I would recommend it to anyone during the non-sizzling months of the year, as long as religious themed decoration is not offensive to you. read more

Mountain Creek Cabins seemed like a really good fit for what we were looking for (through Groupon). We stayed in the cabins for a long weekend in July. The site of the cabins is extremely secluded and tucked behind miles of dirt roads amongst beautiful mountains and fields. The cabins themselves, are clustered together in the woods, but still very private. We stayed in the Whitetail Deer Cabin,(supposedly is the best of all of them) which boasted 1 bedroom and a cute loft with one very large bathroom (with extremely squeaky floors that woke me up every morning when my friends took their showers- and I'm half deaf). The living space was extremely cramped for five people. The deer motif decorations 30+ (yes we counted) everywhere was a bit disturbing to us, but not as much as the Christian inspired artwork and little quotes and phrases posted all over the cabin. I don't feel that a business should feel the need to push their religion onto their guests staying in their cabins! Anyway, our backyard was extremely private with a relaxing hot tub, which we enjoyed every night. Our yard also had access to the small creek with a little wood bridge, that led you up the hill where you could get some firewood for your built-in pit (or order firewood for just $5- which we could not take advantage of because it rained the entire time) :(. We wished that there were more amenities on the premises such as a pool or lake, picnic areas, etc but nothing was directly nearby the grounds. Now...saving the #1 complaint for last. Under any circumstances, do NOT stay at these cabins during the summer. Our cabin only had one small window AC that was placed in the living area. We had that thing running on HIGH each day but the cabin was absolutely unbearable to the point that staying outside of the cabin was actually cooler than staying indoors. Nighttime was the roughest- everyone sleeping in the bedrooms experienced restless nights because it was so uncomfortably hot. Unless you don't mind staying in a cabin that is on average 85 degrees at night, then Mountain Creek Cabins is NOT for you!! Overall, we were pretty disappointed with our experience and will not be returning to Mountain Creek Cabins again. Bought it through groupon, and we were fortunate to get a weekend although it was oversold. (i know there are many people who couldn't make reservation with limited space available) My family of three stayed at Shawnee for three nights in March 2012. The place was very cute and small, but had everything we needed (except for food). All cabins were built along the small creek in the back, so it provided nice water running sound. Gas heater worked very well, and the hot shower was great although the shower booth was little too small. If you are looking forward to the hot tub, lower your expectation immediately. The hot tub runs 24/7 but couldn't get in because there were too many little particles (leaves and other things) and un-clear water. Asked he owner if we could get the new water, but they only changed the filter and put more chemicals to the tub, which didn' help at all. The place has virtuall no phone reception because it's in the deep in the mountains, which made me little uneasy at night: completely dark out, no phone reception, no sign of people... Don't rely on GPS to get there, rather print out the instruction from the website. The closest Walmart is about 20 minutes away. We didn't know we weren't very much into being alone in the mountains, so It wasn't too great. But definitely a cool experience. Oh, one more thing: riding I-68 through the mountains was definitely fun. If you are travelling from the east you will enjoy the great scenic driving with lots of ups and downs for about an hour. read more

Beware of Mountain Creek Cabins I had a reservation with Mountain Creek Cabins but I did not stay there because of the sneaky, malicious way they charged my credit card a rate I had never seen nor agreed to. I want others to be aware of how these people operate. Please don't risk finding yourself in the same situation. You have be careful whom you provide your credit card information to and Mountain Creek Cabins clearly isn't trustworthy. Read on. A brief summary: 1) I see a room advertised on their website at a rate of $179.99 2) I confirm availability of the room, which their website reiterates will costs me $179.99 based on the information I provided (including check-in and check-out date) 3) I submit a reservation request -- which oddly requires you to submit all of your credit card information and agree to be charged -- and they tell me via email that my room will cost a rate of $179.99 plus taxes 4) They take my credit card information and charge my card a rate of $199.99 5) I double check my receipt and find out I was charged a different, higher rate and contact them about the mistake 6) They tell me a holiday rate applies, and that the rate which they had never shown to me nor received my approval to charge my card for, is actually what the room costs. 7) I demand to be charged the rate they advertised the room for OR receive a full refund 8) They refund 90 percent of the charge I never authorized and hold 10 percent for a "transaction fee" per their policy Luckily, I saved the entire email thread in which I exchange messages with the one of the owners. The email thread contains screen shots from their website that proves the rate they advertised on the site AND the email confirmation they sent to me which again indicated a lower rate than what they charged me. Sneaky, sneaky. My boyfriend and I stayed in the Shawnee Cabin for Valentines Day weekend. The experience was nothing short of fantastic. We arrived on a snowy day to exactly the kind of cabin I had imagined for our mini vacation. Our cabin had a full kitchen with plates/bowls/utensils/pots/pans and basic necessities (coffee, filters, tea, sugar, creamer - though the creamer had expired in 2014 so we avoided using it, paper towels, dish soap, etc). The bathroom was full of towels and had soap provided with extra TP. There was a downstairs bedroom that we didn't use but the loft we slept in was great. The bed was really comfy and warm with clean linens folded and ready to be put on. Speaking of warm, not only was there a fireplace but also an extra heater which we appreciated since it was in the single digits during our visit. Once we settled in we ate and went straight for the hot tub. It was already on and heated to 100. It was amazing. The cabins may be in view of each other but with the few walls around the porch and vast woods you still feel secluded and your area private. Overall we had a great experience and plan to make this trip a Valentines Day tradition. My only complaints - the 2 year old creamer and the dishes weren't all clean. Most just had a bit of dust but some needed an extra washing. Nothing too bad! To address some of the complaints I've seen about these cabins: "Religious propaganda everywhere" - I don't know about other cabins, buts had barely any religious literature, only a magazine and some magnets on the fridge. There is no cell service - though this is true it shouldn't be a complaint as you're in the woods. Dirty/not hot enough hot tubs - ours was clean and hot. Dirty linens - ours were clean, did not smell of other people, and were folded and wrapped on the bedside table. To sum up our trip - I'd literally want to live in this cabin year around. read more

Ok, 3 stars for this place and this is why: We stayed at the Black bear cabin. Very nice, quiet, romantic. The jacuzzi bathtub was thank God clean ( unlike other reviews and I'm thankful about that, it would be a HUGE problem if it wasn't). But the cleanliness suck!!! There were forgotten swimsuit on the curtain rod, hands print and forehead print ( gross) on the mirror behind the bed!!! There were stuff under the beds!!! Unsure if the toilet was desinfected. The customer service also sucks! There supposed to have wifi which was EXTREMELY slow the first day and NONE at all the second. We called, they didn't pick up so we left a msg.. they never got back to us. So there was NO phone reception, no internet.. They charge 50$ cleaning fee for what?!?! In their rules binder it says, you should clean it yourself?!? So I'm paying 50$ to clean myself. What kind of hotel and service is that? We had to put the sheets ourselves, we had to strip them afterwards, throw the garbage, wash the dishes, leave the cabin in the way it was ( and we didn't even find it clean!!) This is unacceptable I think they rely on the beautiful scenery and know people will come back. But come on!!!! Make some changes ASAP, people! And then you will be overbooked, reviews will be all 5 stars and the word will spread.. Hope my comment will be heard read more

Two friends and I stayed here a night in mid-April and had a really nice experience. The road leading to the cabins was very long and covered with terrible potholes, so we had to go very very slowly, but that was fine. There had been an error with our booking, so we actually got moved up to a bigger cabin, which could have probably slept 8 people. It was the Cougar cabin. It was very cute and spacious with lots of outdoor seating, a grill, a hottub, an enclosed sun room, a covered porch, and a deck. It had a big flat screen TV and a bathtub and dishwasher. It was clean and cozy. This cabin also has WIFi! I did get phone reception off and on as well. The hot tub was a nice touch, though a bit dirty and foggy. Whatever, though...it was still relaxing to sit in the hot tub right outside near the woods and the creek. We went to watch a movie with the DVD player later that night, to find that it didn't work. We texted the "help" number, and a very nice lady came out within 10 minutes to help us get the DVD player working. My only gripe was the bed had an unclean feeling to it. The sheets felt/smelled kind of clean, but the comforter did not. It was hard to get comfortable at night because my mind just kept thinking about this gross comforter I was sleeping under. The hot tub did not work (temp was at 85 and went down to 81 while there.) The TV and DVD did not work. There is virtually no cell coverage, could occasionally get a text message out to management to ask about the hot tub and TV, and got zero help and accusatory, bad attitude text messages back as though these issues were somehow OUR fault. We had been looking forward to a nice relaxing Saturday evening with a hot soak and a movie after a long hike, and instead we got broken appliances and bad customer service, like they really could not be bothered with us. The cabin itself is clean and decent, bed is way to soft and lumpy, and since the only heat is the gas fireplace, if you want to sit and enjoy the fire the room will overheat. You can do better for your money. read more

We stayed here in March 2013 using a Groupon. We enjoyed every minute of our time there. I was able to get a lot of studying done as was my boyfriend. There are virtually no amenities nearby because these are cabins in the West Virginia mountains. You are expected to "rough it" for a few days and leave your cell phones and tablets at home. That is the best part of the get away! The hot tub was amazing in the snow and the grill and fireplace were great too. Yes, the cabins are decorated in Christian "memorabilia." I find it a little odd and somewhat humorous that Jesus offends people and makes them feel "uncomfortable." I appreciated all of the personal touches the owners put inside each and every one of their cabins. I like the fact there was no check-in process, only a pass code used to gain entry to the cabin. The road was a bit bumpy and lengthy leading down to the cabins but the directions were easy to follow. We routinely receive great coupons by email from the owners and the most recent one was a 'book one night, get the second night free' deal so we're coming back in Jan 2014. Can't wait! read more

This was bad. Go somewere else if realy wont luxury. No clean towles, sheets, nothing was clean. And dont ask for clean towles for your luxury cabin we were told my wife wont do that. So we had to go and buy some cause we could not use the same towle for a week. This is not what we signed up for. My son got bit by the spiders that were moved in befor we got there. We went to a hotel and still had to pay for not being there. O and it is not private because the maintnece man kept comming into our cabin when our teenagers were there alone sleeping, kreepy after he said he didnt need in the cabin for the rest of the week. O ya we had a nice veiw of the cabin matresses on the porch of the cabin next to us. This place needs to look up luxury. To much money for what we got read more

A couple of friends and myself stayed here for one night and on our way home today we all agreed that one night wasn't long enough. We are already planning our next visit. We loved the check-in and checkout process. You just arive and your door is open and the key is on the table along with a binder full of information on area attraction and cabin amenities. We stayed at White Tail cabin. The cabin was very clean and well stocked with towels/linens. The kitchen contained everything you'd need to prepare meals along with many spices/coffee/tea ect... The cabin was decorated with a nature theme that we enjoyed and added to the woodsy character and charm. The rear outdoor area/deck was a great space! We loved listening to the stream/relaxing in the hot tub and taking in the views! The deck/outdoor space was very private and the other cabins are just far enough away. There was a wooden foot bridge to cross the creek that led to trails but since we only stayed one night we didnt get to explore much. We will save that for our next visit and are looking forward to it. read more

We returned to Mountain Creek Cabins after having the most amazing time last year. Unfortunately this time was the most horrible experience. I booked our cabin in December, because we wanted to assure that the cabin/weekend we wanted was not taken. the originally email that I received in December did not mention that there is a key pad on the door. My email clearly states that the door will be unlocked and the keg inside. When we arrived at the cabin, it was raining and the door was locked. We called multiple numbers, asking for the key pad code, and had to leave voicemails. There is no cell phone reception at the site of the cabins, so I had to drive a few miles up the road until I received service. Finally after 20-30 minutes we received a call back. The lady on the phone was very reluctant to even give us the code for the door. Later that night, we were awoken at 12am by people at another cabin who were signing and carrying on. They continued until 2am. It clearly states that quiet time is from 9pm to 9am. I am extremely disappointed about how the owners did not seem to listen to our concerns and blamed me for receiving an old email with incorrect check in information. I WILL NEVER BE RETURNING. Very disappointing and way too expensive for the treatment that I received from the owners. read more
