I have been in here a few times this year for various goods and services, so here goes: Mazamas BCEP Gear Night - this was excellent all the way around. To be fair, we were a pretty easy audience and they had a few well-qualified individuals helping us, but they certainly went above and beyond to explain function, form, fit, and cost for our helmets and climbing harnesses, as well as carabiners and tethers. Renting Mountaineering Boots, crampons and ice axe - this was also deceptively easy the first two times, so I was a bit surprised the third time, when they had boots and cramps, but didn't have a rental ice axe on a Thursday. As a nube, I didn't know we were right in the middle of climbing season. I spent about 15 minutes at the climbing desk with Sven(?) and purchased the correct axe for the climb. Sven was super knowledgeable and listened well, which bodes well when safety and efficiency are such a big deal on the mountain. Shopping for a belay parka - I want to sneak up on this, because it may well be a $500 purchase, if and when I pull the trigger. The associate was willing to spend concerted time with me, even when I admitted I was just looking for information. He explained the different fabrics and fills and construction, and talked through the options. Layers, a puffy, and a rain coat have been sufficient so far for me, and he affirmed the belay parka was for specific usage. Still, I will likely purchase it here as opposed to on-line if/when the time comes. I have needed extra carabiners, waterproofing spray, and a sit pad, and the staff has always been knowledgeable and attentive. Good job, Mountain Shop! read more

This review covers two different services at Mountains Shop, both proved to be excellent. 1st. We came in before winter and took advantage of their season long ski rentals for my two 7 y/o daughters. Service was prompt, and they had everything we needed, boots, skis, poles for a very affordable early bird value. I'm going to say it was no more than $175 per girl. 2nd. Had the privilege of working with Rob in the ski boots department and he was amazing. He was very kind, knowledgeable, and took his time explaining the process along with any potential costs along the way to avoid any potential surprises. I'd hands down recommend checking out mountain shop in both of these areas. You won't be disappointed. read more

I went to mountain shop to rent skis. I had a great experience! I was expecting them to be out of rentals (because it's a busy weekend), but they still had lots of stuff in stock. Our attendant was helpful in determining my boot size & pole length. He was super friendly and helpful. It was only $30 for a 2 night rental! I thought this was a great deal. We had a great experience with the Mountain Shop rental department. We Rented gears for three days, including tent, sleeping bags, and climbing equipment. The staff was very helpful with fitting us with our boots and making sure all the equipment was ready to go. Just purchased new bindings and boots and had them mounted to my new skis. I was stoked to pick them up just in time for the great snowfall we had last week. Long story short. I went up to the mountain expecting a great day with my new set up and ended up with my left binding releasing with very little force applied. These are touring bindings so the toe was still engaged but the heel would release and I manage to reengage the heel. Annoying and when I returned home I looked carefully at the setup. Turns out the DIN settings weren't set! Disappointing to say the least. Shame on me for not double checking their work. I took the ski back in the next day and they fixed them on the spot, but holy smokes, there is no good reason I can think of for this oversight. So, if you have bindings mounted at the Mountain Shop double check the work before you head out the door. read more

Got snowboard, bindings, and boots. Great price for 2 day rental- and you can return on day 3!Less than half the price when compared to renting at Timberline. All staff were polite and helpful, answering questions about anything from good breakfast places to board specifications- Max and Jeremy in particular did a stellar job. Came in for Nordic ski pole baskets. They didn't have any that would fit my old poles, but not for lack of trying. The man working there was helpful, searching for some that would work, then in choosing a new pair of poles. I wish I had gotten his name. Have bought six pairs of skis and numerous pairs of boots from Mountain Shop. Had a problem with Fischer boots - they fell apart after being used 10 times - Mountain Shop was terrible. Would not reach out to Fischer, told me I would have more impact than they would even though they offer a huge range of Fischer's line. From now forward I'm buying outdoor gear online. If local retailers won't stand by their customers, why should we purchase from you? A good bot with a decent model will provide better advice than most outdoor staff, shipping is free, return policies are pretty easy to navigate. read more

First time renting gear here. Needed to rent a pair of skis and poles to revisit skiing for the first time in many years. Max and Ethan were very helpful in identifying my needs and getting me set up to accommodate a pair of size 15 boots I already own. The process was smooth and simple. Returning was simple too. Got docked an extra day rental for returning a day late. I had that coming. However, the rep that assisted me with check in noticed a scratch (not a gouge, about 1/16"-1/8" deep if that) on the bottom of the skis. I can nearly guarantee that this was not as a result of my usage. I transported the skis in a rooftop carrier. I set them in appropriate racks at the mountain. And I most certainly skied no runs with any exposed ground or scattered debris, in spite of marginal snow pack. The check-in rep called over who was presumably the GM. He took a slight glance at the skies, stated that my rental was their first time out, and that the repair would be $30 (for likely a 10 minute repair with a hot iron and ptex). I stated that I was on no runs with any rocks. He said that the pack was low and that any damage was my responsibility. I get that. Except that I didn't cause this damage (or the scuffed tips, or the broken basket of one of the poles, which interestingly weren't attributed to my usage). I am willing to own up to damage I created but am certain that the bottom scuff was there when I received the skis, noticing it when I brought the skis home. It was my word against the store. And a GM that has perhaps forgotten how to engage customers more effectively or comes across as uninterested in engaging customers perceived as outdoors neophytes. Note to self: take pictures of gear at the rental counter to document damage before leaving the store. Anyway, I will be taking my business elsewhere in the future. Yeah, I know, it won't be much skin off the nose of The Mountain Shop. But my dollars are better spent in a store with a softer, more flexible eye on customer service and future business, and one which takes word of mouth more seriously. read more

Wonderful local resource for outdoor gear and clothes. They have a fantastic rental department so you can try items before deciding to purchase, or so you can try new activities without having to commit to spending tons of money on buying the gear first. The people who work there are super knowledgeable, and clearly very passionate about their outdoor hobbies, and invested in helping others get outside. They've been really helpful as my partner and I have been getting into mountaineering and backpacking. We're grateful for their tips and assistance---in helping us figure out what to buy, what to rent, and how to use our gear and pack effectively. We've had some amazing hiking, climbing, and backpacking trips recently, and we honestly couldn't have done it without the Mountain Shop. read more

Had a great experience here renting snowshoes. I think it was only about $8 for a 3 day rental (poles cost extra), the gear was in good condition, and the service was quick and friendly. Plus it's conveniently located right off I-84. Definitely worth going back to for future rentals. read more

I learned to ski as an adult, and didn't have much experience in picking out gear. I bought my first set of beginner skis/boots at Mountain Shop in 2009 or so, and the gentleman that helped me out was FANTASTIC! Got the right fit the first time, and I used that equipment until my skill level outgrew it in 2016. I bought my next set of gear at Next Adventure. I like the skis they sold me (a lot) but the boots never really worked...it was like strapping torture devices onto my feet. Probably should see my next review of Next Adventure for more info if you're curious. Anyway, after 1.5 years of suffering, I just said screw it I'm going to get new boots. I took the boots from Next Adventure to Mountain Shop, and the lady there was again FANTASTIC...explaining to me why the boots that I had were not really meant for my feet, and setting me up in a pair of boots that fit a lot better and were a lot more comfortable. They molded the inserts to my feet, put in the right footbeds the first time, and really took the time to make sure I was satisfied...all for a lower-end of the price scale pair of boots. You MIGHT (not sure) pay a bit more at Mountain Shop than the deep discount places, but the level of service makes it worth it. read more

The cheapest place in town for equipment rentals and the stuff is decent quality. They also have a good selection of pretty much everything minus snowboarding anything. Why the 3-star? The service. So hit or miss. Please do not make a spectacle out of me in front of other customers because I had to audacity to come in to rent crampons without the boots after having test fit them two days prior and receiving detailed instructions by a much better employee on how to resize and fit them. The quality of service seems to decrease proportionally with age. Seek out a younger person and you're likely to have a great experience. Crotchety old elitist dudes, please retire. read more

I have been coming to the Mountain Shop for at least 20 years. Their prices are competitive and often better than other shops. But the reason I keep returning is the service. Jeremy and Steve are the best! They both have encyclopedic knowledge about gear. Both of them are concerned with outfitting the customer with the appropriate merchandise, not upselling. They were helpful and quick when I needed to rent a pair of poles for one day last week. Then, car trouble on the mountain, towed to the nearest mechanic, poles accidentally got left in the car, which was left in Sandy, so poles came back a week later. I apologized when I returned them that they were so late, explained, and those kind souls just charged me for my one day. Now that is good service and empathy to boot. I will add that when I got there, with about 10 minutes to spare if my kid was going to get to his class on time, there was a long line of people waiting to return. I joined the line with a certainty that I would have to come back, feeling slightly frustrated. Then immediately, a bunch of staff showed up at the counter and the line disappeared instantly. I was out of there in under 10 minutes. Another example of excellent service. It was so nice to get the gear the night before instead of on the mountain. It is so much faster and it's nice to reserve the activity day for the activity itself, not picking up and returning gear. I plan to make this my go to spot for all future rentals. read more

In my last review I talked about this great deal on a bike. Well on my ride home I got a serious flat. So I had this new bike sitting in my apartment with a flat tire. A great searches on Yelp and it looked like this place rented bikes so I assumed they might have a shop. Called up and spoke to a very nice woman who said Tom might be able to help me with a flat. She asked if I needed it today and I told her I did. She put me on hold and came back and said Tom would squeeze me in. Walked my bike down to their shop and 15 minutes later rode out. While I waited I looked around the shop while I was there and they had plenty of great climbing and camping gear. Not my cup of tea but seems like they are well organized. Worth nothing: They offer a full like of bicycle repair and tune up work. read more

I called The Mountain Shop a few days before our arrival and picked their brain about cross country skiing (and their inventory pertaining to cross country skiis for three girls) and they were extremely informative and helpful. We got into Portland late on a Tuesday night when they happened to be closing early for their annual holiday party...but they stayed open an extra 20 minutes to set us up with three sets of skis. The guys who helped us out were super helpful and thorough even though they were pressed for time. They hooked us up with brand new skis (boots and poles) for the unbeatable price of $45 total for all three sets. I highly recommend their services! read more

The people that work here, just really shouldn't be in retail. Most unfriendly and oddly condescending interactions ever. Also, I know it's COVID but demanding people read a sign at the front of the store is just stupid. It's been a year, we all know how to COVID safely at this point. I mean you're not getting the Cabella's crowd in there are you? If you see someone taking their mask off or what have you, go tell them to keep it on. If you want to relay information to people as they come in the store just tell them in a friendly way. Don't bark at them and say "what can I do for you, read this sign and disinfect your hands". I'd consider going to literally any other retail shop anywhere for some pointers on dealing with the public. Also, we know that you're super cool because you work at an outdoor store and have perfected your Spicoli-surfer accent, but nobody really cares. Find something else to hang your ego hat on. All the hassle getting skis mounted So I had called and I was looking to get 4 pairs of skis Mounted they said it'd be 50 a mount, I agreed then brought my stuff in, only had 3 pairs, bc. I havent been shipped my 3rd pair of skis for this season yet, lol. So all I was looking to do was transfer my old bindings,, that have been on my 2018 skis. too the two new ones, that I had been shipped. then I had told them I was looking to give them away. they ask me "oh would you like to donate the skis, for shop bindings test work,biggest smile on his face" as if my 2018 new skis, would be used for that lol, I say no thank you, id rather give them to someone that needs them. Meaning not someone that going to turn around and sell them, I guess that's the point, that I crossed the line, too these people. Which would result in one of my skis getting mounted, after I payed for bindings tests, they told me a day later pick it up and they wouldn't be Abel to help me,,, after I already payed for everything a day ago, they said they'd give me a refund I said I don't want a refund I want, what we talked about, (as it's more time like most people) and they wouldn't help me. I had a fantastic experience at the Mountain Shop! Went there to get some ski boots - and had a fabulous boot fitting experience. I think they might be the most comfortable I have ever had... Great boot fitting experience (complete with sizing, footbed fitting, and warmed/fitted boot sleeves). Took a while, but it was worth it! Also, after years of not being able to find the right hiking shoes, they were able to recommend a pair that actually fits my feet (I learned I had high arches and narrow feet). They also recommended some new running shoes...which I love (that they didn't carry). If I ever need anything related to skiing, hiking, etc...I will go back. Here's a tip: Mountain Shop, CUSTOMER SERVICE GOES A LONG WAY. I was a first time renter at MS. And boy, did they miss the mark. From the moment I walked in the same guy who "helped" me was cold, unwelcoming, rude, and one worded answered me. Even upon returning, it was a mere, "let me take the things from you, scan. Ok bye." If you say you want to rent for 5 days but use it for 3 days, they won't pro-rate your money back. Given being a first time renter, I felt like I was condemned for asking this. Maybe I should've asked to begin with but I wasn't expecting a schedule change. There is no compassion here. And with an experience like this, it felt like a robbery to my wallet. It makes me uneasy too that I know I will not be coming back due to attitude and plain rudeness but they have my personal information and address from the rental info. Hmm...this is a tough one. I dropped two pairs of skis off that were in desperate need of TLC as I am about as easy on my skis as I am on laptops, rental cars and people that have strange cat phobias. They were both suffering from some serious battle wounds, thanks Mt. Hood. The skis - not laptops, et al. From a cursory exam, it looks like they did a great job with base welds from serious core shots, a tune and general cleanup/de-rustifying that was, in part, due to a wee bit of negligence on my part. *See below for details as to how/why it cost $95 to repair two pairs of skis. So the three stars are for this: I had been to the Pearl REI minutes earlier with my dividend voucher plus a 20% off coupon burning a hole in my pocket. I have been lusting after the K2 Missbehaved skis ever since Evo broke my heart and sent me the wrong length then ran out of my length in the time it took to ship them back. But HAHA, Ms. McKnee, REI already has all its bike crap out and zero ski equipment (March 27 in Portland, dudes, look outside) in stock. So I figured I would check out what the Mountain Shop had and shop locally and be Portland-y and virtuous and better than you. After picking up my skis from the repair area (moustache dude, you didn't need to sigh when I told you I had another pair after you brought the first pair down, I'm pretty sure that flight of stairs wasn't going to be the end of you), I politely said I would like to look at some poles, as my mine look like they were the victim of a bear attack. Who knew Kevlar could be shredded? Moustache dude pointed vaguely to a wall. All I saw were some cheapo $20 poles, and like I said, I had $90 in REI dividend to burn. Yes, I know, not valid at the Mountain Shop but this is girl logic. After a moment of fiscal responsibility, I thought, "screw poles, mama's getting some new skis after all!" I wandered around the ski area for a good 10 minutes while being totally ignored. Finally I returned to the register and asked if they carried the Missbehaved. The answer was a flat "no." Not a "not that model, but have you checked out these Line, Rossi, Head, etc.?" Just "no." I have not been particularly loyal to any ski brand since my Dad plopped me on a pair of red Rossignols when I was 2 right up until companies started giving them to me free, every season, sometimes in multiples, way back in the Jurassic era. Yeah, I'm going there, but bear with me. Now I have a fake knee and ski at Meadows, not Mammoth, and have resigned myself to paying for equipment. And you know what? It's not cheap. So try and sell me on something else, dude. It's a pretty broad brushstroke between overzealous salesmanship and apathy. I would gladly have listened to your opinion on some other skis than K2, had it been offered. So in the end REI is getting my cash via their website, the Mountain Shop is getting an A-OK for repair and a giant "meh" for customer service. I will need my new skis mounted, but I am not super stoked on going back there for servicing**. *German skis are as temperamental as German cars. My Volkls are like freaking glass figurines while I could ski through a gravel infested parking lot on my K2s and do very little damage. I mean, not that I would ever do such a thing. **Sexual innuendo while discussing skiing is hard to avoid. PS. I didn't even try on goggles which is my third favorite thing to do after skiing and vacuuming so that should tell you something about how quickly I wanted to bail. read more

Bad customer service. A super coooool dude named Simon was "helping me out." He could tell you all about himself! He was condescending, carried a snotty attitude and got fussy when I tried the binding over the boot. Bindings come in sizes for a reason .... Plus I'm obviously buying my first boots, how should I know that I shouldnt test how it clasps with the boot / that it fits the boot? If I had been getting proper help/attention then a explanation about the bindings would have sufficed;) Then they were going to "match prices" with REI but somehow got quoted $140 for K2 Haven boots over the phone when I mentioned several times that they were $96. Then a Mountain Shop salesperson says that "that's below cost, we would never sell that low." so I left and bought them at REI for $96. The Good: they carry and sell good gear from good brands such as BD, Arc'terex, OR, La Sportiva... The Bad: they don't stand behind what they sell. I recently brought in a pair of Scarpa AT boots which I bought there. I needed a very minor repair which they could/would not do. Similarly, I brought my AT and Tele skis in for them to install quiver killers. Their shop prices were so outrageous and not what they quoted me over the phone I decided to do it myself. Their service makes it easy to buy from online retailers since there is no benefit to buy from them with their higher prices. As a professional ski instructor I have plenty of opportunities to spread the word about their poor customer service. read more

Just picked up a new backcountry setup! Staff was awesome helping me pick the right gear (thanks Heidi!) Got BD Carbon Converts with BD skins, and the G3 Ion binding. Picked it up today all mounted and ready to go. Perfect stone grind and wax on the bases, edges prepped, skins cut for me and ready to rock. As always I'm impressed with the professional service. They also put in a ton of work heat fitting and cramming a new intuition liner into my alpine boots, race fit restored. My wife, and one year old daughter went to the Mountain Shop to buy some cross country skis. We had been to REI (only three options) and Next Adventure (lots of options but the worst customer service). We are pretty new to cross country skiing but knew we wanted to get skis as we can't downhill with a one year old. We started talking to one of their sales person who tried his best to answer all of our questions. We can get pretty Portlandia pretty quickly and he admitted that he was not the cross country expert of the store. Instead of bull shitting us like other stores, he eventual got the the store manager, Gee, who races and coaches cross country. He came over and completely outfitted us and helped educate us what we needed. At one point, he even watched our daughter and got her toys so we could try the boots on. Great service with a good selection of cross country skis. We will be coming back. read more

I experienced about what you would expect to experience if you were going into a Portland outdoor store expecting to experience what you would experience expecting when you're expecting. I've never been expecting nor do I ever expect to be expecting, so I suspect you wouldn't believe that last part. I'm tired. Maybe I shouldn't write reviews when I'm tired. Here's the point. Portland loves the outdoors and the outdoors love Portland. Those that love the outdoors work in places like this in Portland. It wasn't perfect, but they had good equipment and pretty decent service. I missed my point, but it was supposed to be that The Mountain Shop is your stereotypical Portland outdoor store, and that's not a bad thing. I just rented equipment here, but the rest of it looked nice. I'll be back for my outdoor needs. Oh, the price was quite reasonable, too. The review may not make sense, but I promise the 4-star rating is accurate. read more
