This place is so amazing! I feel absolutely so lucky to live close to Foster Outdoor. They have really good gear - new and slightly used! Their staff is always really friendly and helpful. Everytime I go there, but recently I went into the shop (5/22/2023) and I wanted to find a pair of lightweight work pants. I was going to be volunteering to do some trail work, and I wanted to wear long pants for safety pants- but I didn't want to wear jeans because they would be very heavy and uncomfortably warm in the heat of summer. And, I got feedback in helping to find a pair of pants that still have some stretch and flexibility and will help protect me from the trail hazards. And, while I was there, I was able to buy a bottle of "Permethrin" to pre-treat my clothes to help keep the ticks away. It was nice to have one stop shopping, and the pants were such a good price too! I definitely appreciate Foster Outdoor, I have also got a huge bargain on a really nice Smartwool-brand jacket! And, I had good luck consigning some of my own gear, and getting some money for that deal! And, I love the building - the old Phoenix Pharmacy building! It has so much history, and how it is linked with Mr. John Leach-the historic grounds slightly more east "Leach Botanical Garden" and it is even linked further to Southern Oregon and the Kalmiopsis Wilderness- the "Leach Memorial Loop" retaliated to Lila and John Leach. They used to travel in Southern Oregon and ride around on their mules- and I think Ms. Lila Leach discovered some species of flowers down there. It is interesting and the Phoenix-Pharmacy building is just plain cool, that is the point of the story!

The view as you enter - lots more to explore once you venture inside.

A terrific addition to the development of Foster as a destination. The store doesn't look all very large as you enter, but there is a second room that expands the space (and the inventory) significantly. Service was friendly, and I was surprised to see how many options there were for something I've always considered to be a niche product (snowshoes). Both their new items and the variety of consignment goods were impressive. Service was friendly and knowledgeable, just what you would hope for in a neighborhood business.

I finally got to check out the new location of Foster Outdoor!

Love this place and now in a new location makes it even better! I depend on Foster Outdoor for their great selection of consignment outdoor clothing. I believe there's enough stuff in the world and I prefer to buy 2nd hand, so this is a good place to find quality items in great shape at good prices! I live on the Oregon Coast now, but if I'm in PDX I always take the opportunity to stop in if I need something and the friendly folks there help me find it! I'll be warm and cozy this winter after shopping today!

Great little store with a nice selection - and half the store given over to a used gear space! Love it! Will definitely be back.

We went in and were able to get some much needed snow boots for our kiddo who unexpectedly skipped a size in winter gear.

I have been in here a few times this year for various goods and services, so here goes:…read more Mazamas BCEP Gear Night - this was excellent all the way around. To be fair, we were a pretty easy audience and they had a few well-qualified individuals helping us, but they certainly went above and beyond to explain function, form, fit, and cost for our helmets and climbing harnesses, as well as carabiners and tethers. Renting Mountaineering Boots, crampons and ice axe - this was also deceptively easy the first two times, so I was a bit surprised the third time, when they had boots and cramps, but didn't have a rental ice axe on a Thursday. As a nube, I didn't know we were right in the middle of climbing season. I spent about 15 minutes at the climbing desk with Sven(?) and purchased the correct axe for the climb. Sven was super knowledgeable and listened well, which bodes well when safety and efficiency are such a big deal on the mountain. Shopping for a belay parka - I want to sneak up on this, because it may well be a $500 purchase, if and when I pull the trigger. The associate was willing to spend concerted time with me, even when I admitted I was just looking for information. He explained the different fabrics and fills and construction, and talked through the options. Layers, a puffy, and a rain coat have been sufficient so far for me, and he affirmed the belay parka was for specific usage. Still, I will likely purchase it here as opposed to on-line if/when the time comes. I have needed extra carabiners, waterproofing spray, and a sit pad, and the staff has always been knowledgeable and attentive. Good job, Mountain Shop!

We came in before winter and took advantage of their season long ski rentals for my two 7 y/o daughters. Service was prompt, and they had everything we needed, boots, skis, poles for a very affordable early bird value. I'm going to say it was no more than $175 per girl. 2nd. Had the privilege of working with Rob in the ski boots department and he was amazing. He was very kind, knowledgeable, and took his time explaining the process along with any potential costs along the way to avoid any potential surprises. I'd hands down recommend checking out mountain shop in both of these areas. You won't be disappointed.

The Best Fly Fishing Shop & Experience in Portland…read more NW Fly Fishing Outfitters is an absolute gem. From the moment you walk in, you're welcomed like an old friend. The staff is not only incredibly knowledgeable but also some of the friendliest people I've ever met in any business. Every visit leaves me with a smile--and way more knowledge than I had going in. I've recently taken a few of their classes, and I can honestly say it's the most fulfilling money I've ever spent. I did Spencer Pelham's Clack Attack class as well as his Intro to Fly Fishing, finishing with a float on the Clackamas River today. It was incredible--so many "Ah-ha!" moments where everything just clicked into place. While Clack Attack was a bit technical for my beginner skill level, it was packed with valuable info. Spencer is incredibly skilled, yet humble and patient. He teaches in a way that makes you feel comfortable and supported while still learning a ton. The way he tied the content of both classes together on the river made it all come alive. I should mention--I'm a 52-year-old woman and a recent breast cancer survivor. Getting back out there and doing something like this was emotional, powerful, and healing. Being on the water today felt like reconnecting with an old friend. We caught several beautiful trout and saw osprey, beavers, bald eagles, and more. It was a magical day. Spencer went above and beyond, not just today but every time I've spoken with him. And the whole NWFFO crew? They've created something really rare. From my second visit on, it was "Hey Jen, how are ya?"--the kind of warm, small-town vibe that's hard to find anywhere, let alone in Portland. If you're new to fly fishing or looking to level up, sign up for these classes. Don't be intimidated if you take Clack Attack first--it may seem over your head at first, but it will all click, especially after taking the Intro class. Throw in a casting lesson or two, and you'll be amazed how it comes together. Massive thanks to everyone at NWFFO--and especially Spencer--for making this journey so special. I can't wait to see what comes next.
