They have name brand stuff
Brian W.

This is a pretty cool spot to buy local gear in a very central location. The staff is always very friendly and accommodating. There is no dedicated parking, so finding a spot to park can be challenging at times. There are also a lot of unhoused people in the adjacent neighborhood. There is a lot of stuff here! It's actually a little overwhelming to try to navigate the store because there are literally racks and shelves of stuff everywhere. So Probably not the best place if you get claustrophobic easily. My favorite part about this place is definitely the bargain basement. You can sell your stuff, find good deals, and even rent ski and snowboard equipment! This place is basically a local REI with the chance to sell used equipment and score a good deal in in their bargain area. Check it out if you have a chance.

Big sale

I thought the sale would be huge, with discounts up to 75% on everything. However, it turned out that most of all the items were only 20% off, with a few at 30%. I didn't see any items 75% discounts. Some people were confused about the pricing; they mentioned a red dot on the Snow Peak items, but we were told not to look for a red spot and to instead check for a green marker on the price tags. It felt like a big letdown because I expected a significant sale, but there really wasn't anything that impressive. I'm super disappointed and feel like everyone else is thinking, "Oh, you thought it was a big sale? Pfft!" Just to clarify: - Green means 20% off. - Red means 75% off.

Tag says, "Used Gear: perfect for those of you that are new to a sport, only get out a few times a year, are thrifty..."

Looking for outdoor gear? Here's my recommendation: go to the basement at Next Adventure. While a certain outdoor gear mega corporation has their "garage sale" every so often, Next Adventure has their basement sale constantly. Also unlike that mega corporation, the staff here is actually knowledgeable and helpful. On my last visit, a staff member came over and helped me look through all the used sleeping bags to help determine which one is best for me (material, temperature, size, etc). The one we settled on was marked $49 which was an okay deal but not exciting... then she goes "oh that should be $15, let me give you a new price tag for it." Mind blown! My friend who recommended the basement to me got a fancy down jacket that costs $400 new for $30 here. And while some things in the basement are a little worse for wear, most of them don't have major imperfections either - no tears, rips, holes, stains, smells, or other defects that might lead to the low costs. They're just great deals.

Andrew walked me through buying my first pair of climbing shoes and helped me get the best pair for me. Was gonna buy a harness online but after the service and experience with Andrew. I'm heading back tomorrow.

Originally I bought one from Nordstrom, but I went to check out OMC. Turns out Oregon Mountain Community gives a 10-15% discount so I ended up saying over $100 and returned the jacket from Nordstrom. OMC is actually an online web store, and this location is the warehouse with all the gear. If you find it online, they will have it in store. Visits may also vary. I went in once and we bought a few jackets, and the sales guy was super friendly and knocked off a huge discount off some very expensive jackets. He also brought out a bajillion different brands and went over all the pros and cons. On another visit, the guy looked high and was so confused on what we were trying to buy. In the end though he still helped us out and I got what I wanted for way cheaper than other brick and mortar stores, but like I said different sales people, different approaches. Also if you are part of local clubs (Mazamas) they will also throw in discounts.

We stumbled onto Cotopaxi about a month ago as we were taking a nice stroll along 23rd Avenue in…read moredowntown Portland. We were not familiar with the brand, but with a big trip (at the time) coming up to a small island in Nicaragua and a large SALE sign out front, well, we had to go in. Right? Cotopaxi, I learned, focused on making durable travel and clothing gear as ethically and sustainable as possible. They also donate 1% of revenue to non-profits that help communities experiencing poverty. The store, while having a lot of items, did a nice job displaying their merchandise throughout the space. The bright and multi-color products are eye catching. The quality of the products are high end and I am in agreement with their statement; durable. The staff asked if we knew much about their product, which we did not, and they were more than happy to take the time to talk to us about who Cotopaxi is, their focus and answer and recommend products we were interested in or looking for. In addition of course we asked where the SALE items were. We were lead to the nice back porch and found backpacks, fanny packs, duffle bags and both men and woman's clothing racks. We decided to check out the large back packs and purchase two (2) for our trip. We very quickly discovered their products do not go on sale frequently, so we lucked out with a great discount on the day we decided to make our first visit. The bags were perfect for what we needed on our trip. I was pleasantly surprised with how much each bag actually held. They have great capacity! Additionally the areas are distributed with different zipped contained sections which allows for easy packing and organization. These bags traveled so well, especially considering we carried them onto 2 major airline flights, one small puddle jumper flight and then a low boat ride for 90 minutes through the mangroves of Nicaragua and then served us well on the small 12 acre island on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. Fast forward, 5 weeks later and as we walked through the Portland Saturday market we spotted a couple with the husband wearing the same Cotopaxi backpack. We stopped and chatted for a bit. They found the store yesterday and he purchased the bag. While pricy, he was already enjoying the product greatly and happy he purchased it. All in all, high priced product, but for the quality, organization and capacity I would absolutely buy the item again. Now that said, I also would prefer to wait for another sale!! SCORE.

This is a must stop shop! Whenever you're in the area, stop in and check out what's new.
