So I was looking for a high end nice jacket for my wife (AKA: Canada Goose). I know you can probably buy them cheaper online, but I wanted a Brick and Mortar store. Originally I bought one from Nordstrom, but I went to check out OMC. Turns out Oregon Mountain Community gives a 10-15% discount so I ended up saying over $100 and returned the jacket from Nordstrom. OMC is actually an online web store, and this location is the warehouse with all the gear. If you find it online, they will have it in store. Visits may also vary. I went in once and we bought a few jackets, and the sales guy was super friendly and knocked off a huge discount off some very expensive jackets. He also brought out a bajillion different brands and went over all the pros and cons. On another visit, the guy looked high and was so confused on what we were trying to buy. In the end though he still helped us out and I got what I wanted for way cheaper than other brick and mortar stores, but like I said different sales people, different approaches. Beware scam website! I gave OMC a 5 star review 7 years ago. They were excellent. However, they closed in 2024. Source: a former employee I know personally. I suspect someone, potentially overseas, has bought the omcgear.com domain and set up a scam shop. The Tigard address is most likely fake, and the photos shown are of the old location on Sandy Blvd in Portland. Buyer beware! For general winter recreation needs including ski gear, I recommend Mountain Shop in Portland. Next Adventure is OK too, especially if you're looking for used gear (they have a bargain basement). Customer service SUCKS!! They don't answer e-mails in any type of realistic timeframe!! They pretend like they have things in stock, so people buy it, then they delay their shipment!!! The store is slightly disorganized, inventory and selection seem low. Many items do not have price tags which can be frustrating. Prices on Amazon are often considerably less expensive. After reading so many good things about Oregon Mountain Community, I took a drive out here to the NE to look for some quick dry pants for an upcoming Earthwatch trip to Brazil. I guess I was expecting something out of the old Berkeley Wilderness Exchange model, which featured a variety of used and new outdoor gear at a discount price. That certainly seemed the case as I checked for selection online before I got in the car. What I found was a sparse collection that didn't match the online offerings and 3 staff members who were content to carry on with their conversations as if I didn't exist. I stayed around long enough to get a full view of the merchandise, but I couldn't get out of OMC fast enough. Maybe I'll return sometime, assume that every retail establishment has a bad day, and then find something I'm actually looking for. I had been searching for Purple Doununder insoles for months. I have Plantars Fasciitis and they are the only insole that work for my aching feet. The prices were reasonable. I do *love* a bargain. The Isis hoodie down jacket I ordered online earlier this week just arrived from Oregon Mountain Community. And I paid less than 1/2 what the one I tried on at REI cost. The difference as near as I can tell is that I got one in last season's color...instead of purple...which if you've been in a store recently, you know is this season's color. It's lightweight and nicely tailored. It even has a really cute print lining that didn't show in the photo. Easy ordering process, prompt emails confirming my order and also when it shipped. My husband and I were the only people in there and two workers were right up front when we came in, not on the phone helping a customer or anything, I felt pretty unwelcome. Here's just one example of why I love OMC. I was looking for a bear-proof canister. Searched around the internet and OMC was one of the cheapest options. Went there and the friendly staff said, "sure we sell it for the same price as the internet price". Essentially, instead of going to REI and getting it for their usual no-discount price of $80, I walk out of OMC with the same thing for $63. OMC is smaller, no doubt, but they usually carry the best-reviewed backpacking items on the market. Staff is well-informed and friendly. OMC remains the best option for me. read more

I recently pulled my large backpack out of storage and found it moldy with stuff growing in it and eating it. Ugh. Off I went, backpack-shopping; after briefly trying on a few packs at one store without any assistance available, I went into OMC, where I was helped patiently for a good hour or so while I tried on about half a dozen different packs. The guy was friendly and knowledgeable, and I walked out with a perfectly-fitting Deuter pack that was conveniently 20% off that day. It's a small store, but they have an excellent selection of high-quality gear, frequent sales, and staff who can help you find what you need (and order it online for you if they don't have it readily on hand). They've got great deals on their website, but if you're shopping for something like a backpack or set of boots, it's worth going in and having somebody help you find the proper fit. Purchased a down jacket online that I simply couldn't find in the color I wanted and I was and still am blown away by how great these guys are! First, they had my jacket, with a 15% discount and free 3-day shipping! How awesome! I went here with my boyfriend to get some gear before we went to Peru. We had a decent experience with the sales staff, helpful enough. My problem is that the hiking shoes I bought were too narrow for my feet, (I wore them inside for a day). I called them back and asked if I could please return these $250 approach hiking boots- and they said no! Hands down the worst customer service. Purchased skis and bindings and the guy with the fake accent - ya, you! - sold me the crummiest, poorly functioning bindings. After three ski trips and time wasted trying to get these bindings to engage- I've skiied with this type of binding for 20 years, btw! -, I returned to the store with my predicament. These guys could care less. Not their problem. No "Hey, take these out again and if the problem persists, please return because we want you to be a HAPPY customer." All the salesguy did was shrug. A great store with great staff. I stopped by to pick up some hiking shoes. First I tried REI out by Clackamas Town Center and got employees that tried to be helpful, but really didn't know anything about what they were selling. Not so at OMC! I got people to actually help me chose the appropriate shoe for me without trying to push me into shoes that were the wrong size or just weren't going to work. Not the best store to visit if your intention is simply to walk around and browse. The products they have in stock are listed online, but not all of them are actually in the front of the store. Your best bet is to browse their website before you visit, that way you can ask one of the employees to help find what you're looking for. Unfortunately, you may have to wait while the items you're looking for are retrieved from a back room. On the bright side, it beats having to wait for shipping. I've gone to OMC a couple times now so that I could try on and purchase some discounted clothing items I saw their website. I've gotten great deals on some Icebreaker and Patagonia gear. I ended up exchanging one puffy jacket for another and the return process was quick and simple. read more

Super cool store with a super cool staff. I was never planning on stopping in at the OMC, but since I was in the neighborhood, I thought I would poke my head in. Thank God I did, because I scored here! I actually went in to the store hoping they would have extra lenses for my sunglasses, which they didn't, but they were able to order some for only $20. Yes, new lenses are really exciting and I was PUMPED, but my blood didn't really start flowing until I saw the wall of $20 shoes. Were my eyes deceiving me? Was there really an entire wall of shoes for only 20 bucks a pair? YES, Patagonia, Salomon, and Lowa (just to name a few). I walked out with two awesome pairs (probably $200 if not on sale) and a new set of lenses; Life is good. They also let me bring in my dog which was really nice! When I brought him in, all of the employees gave him a nice pet and scratch on the belly; my dog liked this place just as much as me! read more

A nice store for outdoor clothing and gear. I like the selection of shoes, socks, and clothing. I am new to hiking so I don't know if this is an adequate selection of things, but I was impressed. I was also impressed with the employees and their willingness to help and happily answer as many questions as I had. I feel the prices are fair, but by no means a bargain (hence the 4 star rating), and parking is a bit confusing. I highly recommend OMCGear if you are buying from them online (I can't speak for their brick and mortar store). I bought a Metolius Power Cam on sale from them via Amazon marketplace. The cam was shipped by Amazon in a bubblewrap mailer (bad idea) and as a result, was damaged in the mail. I reached out to OMCGear via Amazon Marketplace, and they immediately shipped me a replacement at no additional cost to me (bypassing any interaction with Amazon directly). This store is like an REI and has all sorts of outdoor sport clothing, camping gear, equipment etc. Most of what they stock looks well made and priced a little higher than some other stores. I think in most cases you get what you pay for. They do have a membership club and it's free to join. Members are offered discounts with some exclusions. I purchased a bunch of climbing stuffs from OMC 2 weeks ago. Their sale was better than REI (OMC 25% off on full-price itemS vs.REI 30% off on 1 item)-- I got the Petzl Eilos helmet for $39! Anyway, I ordered my stuffs and was delivered in 3 days (they upgraded my shipping to 3-days shipping). I was very excited to open the box and very disappointed when I saw the quickdraws. I ordered "wire" quickdraws but they sent me "solid" quickdraws. I was going to a climbing trip in 3 days so I was kind of pissed. I called their customer service and they sent me the right quickdraws right away, and it was delivered the next day. WOW! From Oregon to Florida! I am very happy about their customer service! I had a great experience shopping for climbing shoes. They had a better selection than REI, and their staff was way more knowledgeable. I also snagged a great Mountain Hardwear coat on sale, and I wear it almost every day. I feel like an outdoor store lives or dies by its customer service, and the staff was helpful without being pushy, which is great when you're trying on like a dozen coats and not sure exactly what you want. The staff here was very attentive and knowledgeable. When you walk in, the store looks pretty small with a limited selection. But the way it works is that they have a ton of stuff upstairs in storage. What you do is look on the computer they have (or you can do it on their website at home before you go) to see what options there are in your size. I'm an extra small so the guy had all these random extra small jackets in storage and he grabbed them all for me to try. Some were really discounted. They have great hiking shoes too. Sometimes they have in-store only sales. Yes, it's pricey, but everything is top quality (like Cloud Veil) and there are lots of sales items you can score for a deal. It just takes a little work to look them up on the computer. The sales guy did the searching and retrieving for me while I tried on stuff. I will definitely go back! read more

After multiple efforts on my part to remedy a bad purchase and customer service experience with OMC (which used to be an amazing shop when they were downtown years ago), I have to provide them an appalling review. I bought AT boots and skis from them last spring towards the end of the season. I stopped in 3 times to catch the staff who where indicated to have good product knowledge (gotta love it when the only person working in the shop says he/she doesn't really know anything about AT gear and that you should come back when another sales person is there). If you work in a tiny shop like OMC, get to know the frickin' gear already. They only had me try on 1 pair of boots even after me asking if there was another option I should try on for size/fit. I bought the boots, and they didn't even offer to mould the liners. Long story long, I take the new gear out for a day on St Helens, and the boots are WAY too narrow and kill my feet. They kill my feet so much that I actually take a fall on the way down and injur my knee and have to do weeks of PT for it. I come back to the shop to see what can be done (knowing they can't take them back). They tell me that Karl can probably mould the shells to make them wider and fit better. BTW, Karl and I go back 20 years from when we used to work together, 1/2 of the reason I bought the gear at OMC in the first place. Well, I called and left multiple messages for Karl explaining the problem and hoping that they'd be able to mould the shells. No call back. I stopped in 2 more times. The last time, Karl was actually there and was "too busy" to come up front to talk to me. I left him 1 last message and.... no return call. I finally just went to The Mountain Shop. They had 3+ knowledgable people in the ski department, happily moulded my shells with their awesome new machine, moulded my liners, and did some grinding to make everything fit perfectly. $100 well spent! Do yourself a favor and just go to the Mountain Shop. Skip the hassle, small gear inventory, and lousy customer service of OMC. read more

Great customer service and quick, precise communication. I was looking for an Arcteryx jacket online through Amazon and found the best deal through Oregon Mountain Community. This was perfect because I also live in Portland. Emailed them late Thursday night after they had closed asking if they had the jacket in stock and if they would price match what was listed on Amazon. Got an email response early the next morning from Carmen saying they would price match and that it was in stock, also gave me the store address and their business hours. Went in immediately and was promptly greeted by a gentleman who assisted me. I told him what I wanted, he got it for me and answered all of my questions. I was torn between two jackets but he really helped me with my decision. He was very knowledgeable. I told him that I earlier spoke to Carmen about the price match and he said no problem. I purchase a set of Gaiters from OMCGEAR in Oregon though Amazon. I was charged sales tax. I called OMCGEAR several times and told them I live in Pennsylvania and clothes,socks, coats, jackets ,Gaiters are non taxable. i spoke to a man at the store and he told me he has to pay sales tax to the state. I said what state he said Pennsylvania .I said why would you pay tax to Pennsylvania when these are non taxable in that state. He said because they are sports equipment. I then told him LL BEAN, EMS,CABELLAS, do not charge tax in store or online in Pennsylvania. I then told in your theory if I buy a coat that is non taxable and I throw a football once now it becomes sporting equipment ? He then raised his voice and said fine i will refund your money. I read some reviews that OMC does not answer emails or their phones, and have very long delivery times. Here is my experience with this company. On March 10, 2014 I sent an email asking if a particular item was in stock. On March 12, 2014 after not receiving a reply I called customer service. When I called they answered on the 2nd ring and I asked if they had one set of LEKI, Khumbu Trekking poles in stock. I was placed on hold and a few minutes later the sales person advised me that they had only one pair in stock for $97.34 and free shipping. These poles sell at other outlets from $129.00 (out of stock) to $169.95. He advised me I had to order on line and he could not place the order and offered to wait on the phone while I did. A few minutes later I completed my order and they were mine and they were the last pair. I was told they would ship out in a few days. After a few hours I received a 2nd message by email that they had been shipped along with a tracking number. On Friday March 14th, 2014 around noon I had the poles at my house which is 1,350 miles from this business. The poles arrived UN damaged and are in fact brand new. I don't know why others have had issues with this business as for myself I can only say I am completely satisfied and would recommend them to others and I would not hesitate to purchase from them again. I had great service and free two day shipping, almost overnight as my order was not placed until 1:45pm on the 12th and they were in my hands 46:15 later which is less then two full days and at a very low price.
