Came here on a Saturday night when my friends and I were visiting Boulder and it was absolutely packed. We had to wait about twenty minutes for a table but were actually allowed to get free beer samples from the bar while we waited, which was a nice touch. As far as the food goes I felt it was a little overhyped. I definitely enjoyed my burger but it didn't blow me away compared to other similar places I've been in the past. Their fries were delicious though, although some of my friends were unimpressed and compared them unfavorably to Five Guys fries. We've been going here since they opened in the 1990s and they are still one of the most affordable and tasty places to eat on Pearl Street. I love the green salad with chicken, my wife gets the burrito. They are always good! The one thing that has changed is there are even more beer choices now than ever. The IPAs are still good and hoppy, but they offer some wonderful Kolschs and session ales as well. Plus some rye beers if you are feeling adventurous. If you come on the weekend, be prepared to wait, but it's worth it. And while you wait, there are often free french fries to go with your beer. Finally, we bought our daughter her as a toddler, it was one of the more fun places to eat with kids and quaff some great beers. Still a great Boulder tradition. Keep up the good work! read more

So disappointing!!!!!!!!!!! Read the reviews and thought it would be super yummy, but yikes! So gross. We waited for a half an hour to sit down. I got the lunch griller with the bacon, pesto grilled cheese and tomato soup. The pesto was super sweet- tasted like there was sugar in it. Bacon was fine. Cheese was super mild and tasteless. Small sandwich. Tomato soup was super mushy and cold. Tasted like straight parsley. Mom got bbq chicken cheesesteak. It was tiny, but it was so gross she didn't eat it anyways. Insanely sweet sauce and mushy peppers. We got cheese fries to start. They were burnt, greasy, and the cheese did not stick. It was just like shredded cheese on top of fries. Was hoping for more of a cheese sauce. I ended up throwing up after mine and my mom had a stomach ache for a day. Really do not recommend. read more

This seemed to be a popular and casual little hang out with great food. I ordered the Gooney Bird - turkey on a baguette with sauteed mushrooms and onions topped with melted swiss cheese and roasted garlic mayo. It also comes with lettuce, tomato, onion and chips, but I requested no tomato, and since it comes with sautéed onions I said I'd skip the raw onions. The waiter hesitantly brought out the plate saying something about portobello mushrooms and no sautéed onions but he'd send it back if I liked, and I reluctantly said I really wanted the sautéed onions. Surprisingly, my meal came back pronto and was delicious. Our young ponytailed waiter was very friendly and charming. We left our umbrella there, and the next day found out they had held it for us. Our first attempt was Avery. We were greeted with a multiple hour wait and decided to try Mountain Sun. We called ahead and they put us on a list. There was a wait, just not a Avery level wait. When you enter you might be told there is a wait. No sweat, just head to the back and sample all their beers. That should keep you entertained until it is time to sit down. Once you order you are treated to a good selection of pub style food. Killer nachos, great hamburgers, friends, and kids meals. Plus the parents get try those awesome beers with food. The fries were amazing. We ordered one fry while we were waiting and another at the table. The great thing was that it fit the in-laws need to try a lot of local colorado beers. This place has a great selection and unlike some brewpubs the beers are actually pretty good. The food is about 1.7 times better than Avery (imho avery should focus on beer and food trucks). So if you want a better meal with your beer try out Mountain Sun Just whatever you do, don't go to Coors. Coors is a non-colorado owned brewery for people who hate colorado, hate beer, but like tours. Seriously, do you hate beer that much? Better to drink potato water with a shot of Vodka. Come to Avery, Mountain Sun, or wherever. . .just not Coors. read more

Based on other Yelp reviews, my son and I decided to try Mountain Sun Pup and Brewery. They didn't disappoint!! The wait time for a table on a Friday night, was about 40 minutes. Not bad. I've eaten at almost every popular restaurant in Boulder and Mountain Sun Pub & Brewery is by far my favorite one. First off, they ONLY ACCEPT CASH. Because of this, they can keep their prices low on their menu. Second, their service is incredible. The waitstaff works as a team and all splits tips so everyone if friendly and helpful whether they are your waiter or not. The food: Oh man where do I start. They are known for their burgers and sandwiches but I still haven't had anything I didn't like. My favorite entrees on their menu are the bison burger, the chorizo burger, the boom boom sandwich, and the eggplant marinara sliders (normally a special). The beer: Happy hour is from 3-6pm Monday through Friday where you can get $3 pints of their locally brewed beer. My personal favorites are the Rye IPA and the Honey double IPA (you can probably tell I like IPA's). Whether you are just visiting Boulder or are a Colorado native, you will love this place. High, dark ceilings seem to be the trend in modern eateries on pearl street, but mountain sun takes a different approach. The perpetually crowded retro restaurant features an elevating white ceiling with beautifully painted ductwork. There are places where painted ductwork might come off as tacky, but the symmetrical supplies traversing the dining area are charming, painted with hop vines- appropriate to the brewery venue. Exposed plumbing, similarly white, hints at the upstairs residents, and sprinkler pipe adds to the ceiling without crowding it. Plus tasty beer and free samples. read more

The wait tells a story I guess.. top notch place in Boulder with a very long wait, but totally worth it. Got the Nitro chocolate stout to start off while we were waiting, t'was excellent. Me and my friends were perched right outside the main door and we were constantly opening the door for the servers, they gave us a beer and appetizer on the house for all our efforts! Small things! I had the elk burger which was very juicy and perfectly cooked. Also had the oktoberfest as the second beer which was great as well. Now, it appears and I am sure for good reason, everyone loves Mountain Sun and the rest of their locations. Including my cousin who took me here after hiking Chautauqua. Great location, right on the street, perfect for people watching. Very small inside, we bee lined straight to the back counter where the friendly staff offered me a variety of beer to taste. Anything I wanted. I think I may have tried at least 5 different beers. We hung out here while we waited for a table. And then something opened up on the mini patio and we grabbed the spot. It is just a single bar top outside where seats are arranged side by side. Our server seemed a little disheveled at first, I get it dude, you're busy, it was the lunch rush. But it was noticeable enough in the beginning that me and my cousin looked at each other and were like uh ok, at least fake it till you make it Johnny Geez! So we got a couple waters, sipped our beers and I ordered the blackened chicken sandwich. I have no idea why that was what I ordered, when there are a dozen delicious hamburgers to choose from. But it was manageable, I still ate it. The fries were good. After we got our food our server did perk up a bit and finished the meal off on a lighter note than he started on. Great menu. The only draw back here is that they only accept cash. But they do warn this upfront, so still deserving of 5 stars in my opinion. Reasons for 5 stars: 1. Free beer samples while you wait for your table. 2. Free (fresh & hot) french fries while you wait for you table. 3. Great service- we ordered soup, which was too cold for our liking. They quickly replaced it with a hot cup, took it off the bill, and came over to apologize. Completely made up for it. 4. Good food- although the menu is pretty standard bar food, it actually tastes fresh and the portions are perfect. What we ate: Grilled cheese (+avocado) and tomato soup, grilled chicken sandwich with tortilla soup, and the burger with goat cheese and date puree (can't remember the name). This place had a certain charm to it that you can't really describe. Maybe because it reminded me of a local brewery in my college town of Athens, Ohio, but it really had an effect on me. The food was so good, and the fact that they let you sample the beers for free before you commit to one is pure genius. I will say that the shared service was a little flawed at times, but not enough to keep me from enjoying my experience here. Went for a quick lunch after a hike in Chautauqua and Mountain Sun really hit the spot. There was a short wait for a table on the Saturday afternoon, but they offered free beer samples (which were very good) and chatted with us for awhile. I got the goat cheese burger for lunch with tortilla chips as recommended by our waitress. The burger itself was very good--a bit on the thin side, but the jam and goat cheese really shone and made the whole thing flavorful and enjoyable. The tortilla chips are still a bit of mystery to me--they taste like a bag of chips you opened and put on the plate. They're fine but I wouldn't associate them with a burger. My dad's fries were a much better choice. The service was fairly good, but nothing out of the ordinary. Enjoyable food+free beer tasting and a friendly hostess rounds Mountain Sun up from a 4 to a 5. I sought out this brewery on a return trip to Boulder because it was that good. I also love the team atmosphere and karma envelopes (though I chose to walk to ATM first, the option restores my faith in humanity). Did I mention the beer is phenomenal and the food prices are almost too reasonable? Is this a trick? I guess it prompts one to tip better I had the veggie burger (standard puck, unfortunately) with blue cheese and basil sauce. I put that yummy goodness all over my fries and know for next time to order a side of it for dipping. How do I love thee, Mountain Sun? The general vibe of Pearl Street is lovely & hip, & Mountain Sun is no exception. The staff is wildly friendly, incredibly attentive, & hell-bent on making your night a good one. The food was unique & delicious even though it was on paper pretty basic American-classic cuisine. They have a very vegetarian-friendly menu with lots of options for substitutions if so desired. Our party of 4 had to wait about 15 minutes for a table (around 9:00 PM on a Thursday), & it was well worth the exceptionally short delay. My wife and I were on vacation in Denver and decided to take a trip up to Boulder. I saw this brew pub had a great review on yelp and we decided to pop in. The place was packed, and it offered samples of their new summer brew if you wanted. We were seated quickly and I ordered an FYIPA to start off with. It took awhile to get there, but I was pleasantly surprised with citrusy happiness. The menu was pretty extensive and pretty organic. Kind of a college hippie, all natural place. I ordered the tempeh rueben beer baked tempeh with sauerkraut, melted Swiss, tomato, vegan 1000 island on rye bread with chips, I substituted a side salad for like two buck for the chips. Love when I can sub a salad! Tempeh is a soy based product, but more in a loaf form than tofu. It was plenty tasty though! Everything about it would be a vegetarians delight. I had the XXX pale ale that was on tap with my meal, which was also real good. Just above average. Overall, a fun place for dinner. Lots of families and college kids enjoying their supper. We came here on a Sunday night after a long drive from Aspen, and were immediately greeted by a very friendly waitress who led us to our choice of table. The place was huge, could easily have a large party there! We were handed beer menus and left to deliberate on the massive amounts of beers they had on tap. We were lucky enough to come to Mountain Sun during Stout month, where they had a ton of different stout beers on tap. Seriously the most delicious stouts I've ever had! The waitress was extremely friendly, she offered us tons of samples/tasters before we decided on which beers to buy - very generous pours of beer. I tried several stouts, coffee/bacon/chai tea/peanut butter. I liked the chai tea stout the most, as it hd the most unique flavor, but honestly all the stouts were very high quality. We ordered wings, which were delicious and a very large portion for a group of 4 to share.
