F for customer service. I feel bad leaving a poor review especially given that I quite like the owner and have had good experiences with the shop in the past. And have been a loyal customer for many years and have bought a ton of stuff from them. But today I had a terrible experience and I just feel like I need to share it. I went in to rent a pair of skis for my daughter as we wanted to go skiing the next day. It was 4:45 on Sat. Walking in and saying I wanted to rent skis. The young guy behind the counter asked me if I had an appointment. I said no, I no idea I needed an appointment for a one-day rental. Then he said I'm sorry I won't be able to help you we close in 14 minutes. Well, first closing at 5pm when you're a rental shop during the ski season seems a little early but OK. I said are you sure I just need skis and that shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes (I used to work in a rental shop and setting up rental skis is really very quick). But he said no, it would not be possible. There were no other customers in the shop so it was unclear what else would be taking his time, but clearly not helping me. He very unhelpfully suggested that I could come back in the morning and that they open at 11. Which is pretty useless if you want to ski that same day. The fact that he suggested that as a solution is just more evidence that he had zero interest in listening to what I need or in any way finding a way to help me. I hope this is an anomaly and not what I can expect from the shop going forward. I really enjoy having a local ski shop in West Seattle and I hope that my future experiences will be like all my previous ones. read more

Mountain to Sound Outfitters is a gem. The service here is super-friendly and very knowledgeable. We came here to rent snowshoes and poles. Not having a clue what where we were actually going to go snowshoeing, we asked for recommendations from the team here. Cabin Creek in the Snoqualmie Region was recommended to us, and let me tell ya- we had SUCH A GOOD TIME! The snowshoe rentals and poles worked out so well and Cabin Creek was a perfect place to snowshoe! It totally surpassed my expectations and really made my first snowshoe experience as good as it could be. I didn't get time to shop for anything else here, but it seemed like there was a lot of gear for outdoor activities like kayaking, skiing, etc...and I'd imagine, if you are new to any of these activities, the team here can point you in the right direction. Greg was so awesome at Mountains to Sound. I was really excited about getting a kayak to get out on the water this summer but with all of the closures going on didn't think it was possible. Was so happy to be able to make an appointment at mountains to sound to sit in a few of the kayaks. Everyone was wearing masks, hand sanitizer was abundant, and I learned so much about the different types of kayaks so I could make an informed decision. I left with a PFD, but made a second appointment to finally purchased my kayak. At the second appointment Greg was just as amazing. He helped me pick out some roof racks. His employees install them for me and he educated me about how I could put the kayak on my car all by myself. It alleviated a lot of stress and anxiety I had being that it is 50 pounds. They didn't have one, but instead took the time to dig around in their repair cabinet, found a small off cut from an old patch, and fixed my small tear on the spot for free. I live across the street and am a ski enthusiast, so naturally I was stoked to be living so close to a ski shop. Every time (about 5x) I've been in, I've felt like the staff wasn't really engaged or knowledgeable. My final experience took the cake, though. I called ahead to see if they had a boot in my size available. They did. I asked if they do price matching. Was told "no, that's not reasonable, we're not a corporation" (ok ... I was just asking). Went in anyway to try it on. Staffer who was a snowboarder and told me "he didn't know much about skiing" handed me the box and walked away - which is totally fine, because I can try it on myself. Didn't love the fit, put it back in the box, gave it back, and then was told that I should buy something of ~$20 value "for the boot fitting." Laughed in his face, told him this wasn't a boot fitting, and if they'd wanted monetary gain from it, this should have been established in advance. He had nothing to say. read more

HOPE YOU NEVER NEED THE OPTION OF A RETURN LIKE ANY OTHER RETAILER OFFERS... We purchased bike racks from M2S early this summer. With COVID stretching on as long as it did, we never ended up using the racks. Sent a few emails about wanting to return them that went unanswered. Called a few times over the last couple of months and wasn't able to reach anyone by phone until today. Was told they don't do returns, "it's their policy." So now we're out $500. They also mentioned they don't do refunds on any Thule items specifically, but they made an exception earlier this year on some crossbars they ordered for us that were taking over a month to arrive so we found elsewhere in the meantime. There was no mention of a policy being broken at the time of our first Thule refund a couple of months ago. Avoid the headache, order direct from Thule, they have a return policy for unused product. read more

I have shopped here for both my daughter's skis and son's snowboard and both times the people were very helpful; never felt like we were being upsold or anything. But this review is about the great level of service I had this weekend. My son lost an important part to his snowboard binding, so I stopped by to see if it was possible to buy a replacement part. The guy in the service department said they usually have a collection of spare parts and looked to see if he had what I needed. He did and when I asked him how much the part would be, said i could just have it. When I said, "really?" he just said to please come back and buy some bindings or something; which of course I will do very soon. read more

The employees are friendly and patient which they need to be in order to deal with a critically flawed computer system. They picked out some nice skis boots and poles for me then wanted me to fill out a form on an i-pad. Twice I did and twice it disappeared. They wanted me to fill it out again. I said no, can't you just adjust the bindings, ring me up and send me on my way? No they needed the form filled out (manually this time). I'm thinking if these guys with all their experience know my weight, height and skiing ability, setting the bindings should be a no brainer. At that point I walked out. They do not save all your information from previous rentals which is counterintuitive. read more

I'm a big promoter of buying from local businesses and with retailers like Mountain to Sound Outfitters, it's easy to do! I was planning for a trip (the day before the trip, of course) and was wanting to figure out how to get a storage container I had purchased on my Volvo. I stopped in and the staff at Mountain to Sound really took time to help me walk through some options. I had no idea of the different types of equipment I could use. In the end, I was able to find the right equipment for my vehicle. While the store didn't have time to install it, the staff did take the time to walk me through really every step that I would need to go through in order to install the equipment. Everything went smoothly and I was ready to go in a couple hours. I did find the prices at Mountain to Sound to be really competitive, even to online. While I'm sure you could save a few dollars going to some online store, you couldn't get the convenience of the neighborhood location and help of the knowledgeable staff. They carry Thule, which seems like some great quality stuff. I haven't really owned any other racks, but was pretty impressed with the looks and design as I installed my stuff. They have a good return policy and it's really clearly stated on the receipt, it was 10 days for the equipment I bought, full return. I was really pretty happy overall and felt like I received a great value. The store itself is located right on Alaska St and there's not a lot or anything, so parking on the street is pretty easy. They've got a nice little store with roller blades, skis, snowboards, skateboards, sunglasses, kayaks, inflatables and some other stuff that I didn't have an opportunity to check out. read more

After two years of serious boot issues, I made the leap to purchase a new pair before the winter season started. Rosie helped get me into a few different options for folks with wide feet and I ended up finding a pair that I really loved. Really disappointed with the service and quality at our neighborhood outdoor outfitter. We have rented equipment for the season here for the past couple of winters for our two kids. Last season we had to come back to get a snow board binding fixed midway through the season. A strap broke, causing us to cut our ski day short. This season, we again rented there and on our second trip up to the mountains for the season, another piece broke off my sons snowboard causing us to rent a snowboard at the mountain. The next run, my daughter's ski binding snapped rendering it unusable as well. After two separate trips to the rental place at the mountain we end up shelling out $55 to get usable gear. When we returned to talk to Mountain to Sound, they charged us $60 to fix the rental ski and said the equipment waiver was included in the contract. Bottom line is that 3 out of the 4 equipment rentals we have done here have resulted in broken gear. They are renting barely serviceable equipment which could have resulted in serious injuries to my children. And they were completely unapologetic about it, looking to take $ any way they can. Our family will never shop there again. Next time we will go to REI. read more

SUPER DISAPPOINTED. DO NOT TRUST THEM WITH YOU GEAR I had a pair of skis go in before lock down for a heal piece issue. I asked them to look into it and see if it could be warrantied or replaced. Before lock down happened I had to call at least 2-3 times to figure out if they had gotten any further along. They always promised a call back, but never actually managed to call back. Then Lockdown hit. After lockdown, I just wanted my skis back. So I went to retrieve them. After spending about 10mins looking for my gear, they handed me my skis, no big deal. When i got to my car I realized they had REMOVED THE TOE PIECE. Why? No one could tell me. Why didn't they tell me they removed the toe piece? Not sure. So I went back and asked for my toe piece. But they couldn't find it. But they promised me a call back. Never got a call back. Noticing a trend here? Finally after calling a couple times they said they found the toe piece. Great! I got busy and it took me several weeks to get back to the store. BUT THEY LOST THE TOE PIECE AGAIN. The new manager Rosie (they can't seem to keep employees around very long) promised to call back w/ an update the next day. Nothing. So I went in again. Still nothing. The person working the front desk had no clue, but promised that Rosie would call back. Still nothing. So I call in today, and they are HIGHLY annoyed that I keep trying to get my toe piece back. and still nothing. Don't leave your gear here. You might not see it again! read more

I have flat feet, and skiing is harder on them than most sports. The last part of boots I was using were just killing me, and based on online reviews, decided to make the trek to West Seattle. Totally worth it. Just got back from a weekend at Whistler and my feet never felt better after 2 days of skiing - and I was still breaking in the boot! All thanks to Mountain to Sound. They fitted me with a great boot and were super knowledgeable. It's a small staff and you know these people love what they do. This is a family owned operation. It's not a giant behemoth with massive purchasing power, so I have a feeling I might have been able to get a better price somewhere else, but I couldn't fine this expertise. Also, I know they will be there if I need to make any adjustments etc. If I ended up paying an extra $20, it was worth it. Would 100% go back, and will indeed do so when my wife purchases a new pair. read more

I needed new snowboard boots and decided to give the local shop a try. I had a great experience and was in and out. Shannon showed me all the trick new features with the various boots and helped me pick out the right size. I was nervous about spending so much money to end up with boots that still hurt my feet, but Shannon alleviated my concerns. I'm glad to know that I can go back and she will help me make some adjustments if needed. All the staff there were friendly and helpful even though they were busy and close to closing. read more

I went to Mountain to Sound today to check out the used tandem sea kayaks from Alki Kayak tours. The boats clearly have been well-used, but that did not bother me because they were not advertised as being in perfect condition. I was a little surprised by price of $1,999 when brand new these kayaks are $2,499 (online). Notwithstanding less of a discount than I was expecting, my wife and I were actually interested in purchasing one (or maybe two). I was concerned, however, with how heavy they were (96lbs) and whether my wife and I could comfortably transport together. I probably should have asked before taking the boat off the rack (that was literally two feel off the ground), but as we were very carefully testing weight, one of the younger employees, in a very aggressive tone, told my wife not to put the kayak on the ground (the kayak's material is almost bullet proof, and already had several scratches). This might seem a small thing, and in the final analysis it is, but with so many options for where I can go to buy such a product, the manner in which this employee responded to a customer (my wife) cost the business a sale. There were ways to handle this situation that did not involve an aggressive and condescending tone. And, again, this boat's material is nearly indestructible, and if I would have damaged it would have bought it. read more

The wife and I stopped in 20 minutes before closing on a Saturday to checkout some kayaks we were hoping to try out for fit and feel and the guys there were great the whole time. Nate and Cameron never made us feel rushed despite it being closing time on a Saturday. In fact, they helped readjust my FJ's roof racks to mount the Thule kayak braces I bought to transport both of the Hurricane Excursion 128's we ended up buying (on sale by the way). We walked through all of the mounting instructions for the kayaks themselves and they seemed genuinely interested in our education and ongoing enjoyment of the new boats we were hauling home. In the end, they stayed nearly an hour after closing to help us get situated with our new purchase all the while being friendly, conversational and informative on what we were buying. Overall, we're extremely pleased with this shop and will certainly be coming back for any accessories or watersport needs. We highly advise anyone interested in any of the products they offer to stop on by and check the place out. It's a gem and a good example of the dying art great customer service. read more

This is a great full-service ski and board shop that also offers very reasonable prices on rental and shuttle packages up to Crystal or the Snoqualmies. They also appear well equipped for the kayakers and paddle boarders. I went in to get a binding adjustment and tune up and ended up getting a great crash course on the whole process of calibrating, fitting and tuning bindings to match a boot and a skier size and type. Both of the guys working were friendly and competent and the shop was well equipped for tuning skies or snowboards. The retail selection looked pretty good with a greater selection of skis, boards and shades than clothing. They have good rack systems for outfitting your car to transport all of the above sports gear. They're an awesome addition to West Seattle. read more

Whether renting paddle boards or getting fitted for skis, every time I have dealt with these guys I've been impressed! You can tell they have put their heart and soul into their business! The expansion is GREAT! There is a ton more room, huge selection and inventory and they carry the best, local and reasonable brands around. I am a West Seattle Business owner and love supporting small, new business' but this one really stands out to me. All of the employees show a genuine interest in being there, to help people find what they need. M2S ski rentals are cheaper, the service is better, it's personal and they back their products just as well...AND it's right in our backyard. (They also have quite a bit of sale merchandise) I would like to point out that Roman helped me and spent so much time trying to meet my needs! They just started carrying nordic skis (after many requests) so if you need to rent for the day it's quite a bit cheaper then REI and you won't have to drive over the bridge. ;) I wish Mountain 2 Sound great success with their expansion...they have a very cool concept and totally back their interests with professional, quality service and products. I can't say enough nice things about Mountain to Sound Outfitters. Recently, I had the option of getting crossbars and a rack put on my car by a big box retailer or go local to Mountain To Sound. I was going to Stevens Pass on Friday and needed to have the work done on Thursday - I left my last meeting during the day and showed up about an hour before close. Hannah, Quentin, and Dave were able to help me out expediently and professionally. They didn't have enough time to put the rack on perfectly flush since it was one hour before close, but advised that they come back when they were less busy and had a bit more time. They gave me an excellent deal on a rack - I was on the fence about it, but very happy with the decision in hindsight. I'm hoping that their guarantee lives up to REI's, but I'm confident that with the service I received there, they'll do a great job on service. I'll probably be going here to buy the other stuff I need in the future instead of fighting the crowds at the 'flagship' downtown. read more

Competence - D, Customer Service - F. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place. A small ding on my kayak was letting a little water seep in, and M2S said they could repair it. After over three weeks in their shop I hadn't heard back; when I finally called they said I could pick it up. (Thanks for never notifying me.). I was charged $160 for a small epoxy patch that probably took all of 20 minutes to apply. The first time I used the kayak it STILL leaked so I brought it back. They said they'd get on it as soon as possible and it would be ready in a week. After ten days and not hearing anything, I left a message, After nobody called back, I went in. Nothing had been done on the repair. I asked for a refund and took the kayak back. Through all of this - no communication, no concerns, and no apologies on their part. So, M2S, thanks for holding my kayak hostage for five weeks of prime summertime paddling, without ever fixing it. read more

Brought my daughter in for boot rentals, she tried on boots, had her bindings adjusted to the boots, we signed the waiver and rental agreements, and were told to come back on Friday to pick them up. Just came back to pick up the boots and they didn't have them any longer. Was told "maybe these other boots will fit?, can you bring your daughter and skis back in?" My response was "Then why did we go through all the trouble of getting fitted and filing out the paperwork if you just rented the equipment to somebody else?" The response was "To speed up the process. We were really busy yesterday". Yeah, no thank you. We'll be happy to take our business elsewhere and rent in Canada where they not only know how to take a reservation, they know how to keep one. read more

This is long so here's the summary - Mountain to Sound is outstanding. Shop local. This shop and all the employees I met really know their stuff, but they weren't intimidating to a newbie like me. I have a very small foot, so they only had a few pairs of adult boots for me to try on in the store, but Nate wrote out a list of other options he would recommend for me. It's clear they want you to have what is best for you, even when it's not in their store at the moment. Then, they remembered my name after the first time came in, answered all my questions, gave me a rental for the day (and put the cost towards my final purchase) since I couldn't decide which skis to buy, and when I did FINALLY decide they were able to turn around the skis on the same day so I could go skiing the next day. Nate is amazing - get your boot fitting from him! He not only fits the boot, but explains the reasons why the fit matters, what is different about each boot, the science of it. Now I not only have a great fitting pair of boots, but I am also informed about it. Two other women helped me pick skis (over two different visits) and they were both knowledgeable, helpful, and encouraging. It's clear that the outdoors is their personal passion and they just want you to have a great experience at their store and with their equipment. Final Note: I love shopping local and this company proves that shopping local shouldn't compromise quality, customer service, price, or experience. read more
