Mountainside Lodge: Whistler, British Columbia Whistler and Blackcomb are consistently rated as top ten-ski mountain in North America, and often are cited at the top ski mountains in North America. Nearly every serious advanced skier has skied Whistler and Blackcomb or has his/her sights set on this beautiful destination. The accolades and honors are impressive. Snow Country Magazine and Ski Magazine rightfully so recognized Whistler as THE Number One Ski Resort in North America. And the International Olympic Committee selected Whistler as THE best place in the world to host the 2010 Winter Games and ParaOlympic Games. So, 'natch, this is THE place in the winter. Interval International list six-time shares in this ski area, and three of these time-shares are premium resorts. During peak ski season, we decided to "lock in" Mountainside Lodge at Whistler, British Columbia (17 Sundial Place, Whistler, British Columbia V0N 1B4, Canada, 604-932-4511, www.mountainsidelodge.ca) when a unit became available. Mountainside Lodge at Whistler, British Columbia offers studio, one-, and two-bedroom units. Because the mountain is the main source of day activity, the time share amenities are secondary. The photos of Mountainside Lodge at the Interval International web site will provide the visitor with an accurate view of this time-share. The Vancouver airport is only a 75-mile drive along very well-maintained highways. Mountainside Lodge is a short 150 yards from lift to both Whistler and Blackcomb. Mountainside Lodge provides ski lockers at the lobby area, and this feature is a real convenience. While the units seem on the small size, the property is well maintained. Check in is speedy, and the skier(s) is soon in the middle of a pedestrian village. Parking is very convenient. Many U.S. citizens refer to Whistler when they should be speaking of two mountains: Whistler and Blackcomb. It is true that one lift ticket permits skiing at both mountains, and the two mountains will challenge all levels of skiing. I know there is a huge difference between black diamond skiing in the East and in the West. My skiing abilities are black diamond (West), but not double black diamond. I scan a ski map rather than study the map, and the fun part is taking different trails and mountain bowls and working my way all over the mountain. A real advantage if Whistler and Blackcomb are that there are some very serious skiers, and generally, there is little reason to be on the watch for the "out-of-control" skier. These two mountains will keep the best skier energized for a week. Whistler Village is a compact modern, but European style village. Because Whistler Village is designed to be traffic free, there is quaintness to this planned village. Après skiing is developed to a fine art in Whistler Village. Restaurants vary from casual delis to fine dining. Of course, a small village(s) will suggest the advisability of restaurant reservations. Grocery stores are available to supply the condo kitchen. Unfortunately, recent government actions have required U.S. citizens to carry passports to enter Canada, and to re-enter the U.S. Most of us understand the world is a different place, and the passport requirement is not a serious time constraint. The drive from Vancouver is referred to as "The Most Romantic Road in the World." Highway 99 from Vancouver to Whistler is often referred to as the "Sea to Sky" Highway. This two-hour drive was voted the most romantic road in the world. There are gas stations, restaurants, and grocery stores in Squamish - the halfway point to Whistler. Photo Opportunities: Snow-capped mountains, Bald eagles and wildlife, Shannon Falls waterfall, Roaring hydroelectric dams, Ferries and cruise ships in Howe Sound, Historical landmarks and Aboriginal craft stores, The Stawamus Chief granite monolith (one of only two in the world.) The drive is pleasant, and the driver may miss a good deal of the "romance." Be certain to specify snow tires for the rental car; in fact, specify a "ski package car," or be prepared to rent an SUV for this holiday. While one might be tempted to visit Vancouver on a ski trip to Whistler Blackcomb, I find a tour of Vancouver to be a distraction from the primary sport of skiing. There is enough sport in skiing, and more than enough après ski to keep a skiing couple or family occupied at Whistler Blackcomb. read more

Unexpected treat: Ensuite dry sauna! Loft room at Mountainside Lodge seem to have an ensuite, small, but still amazing dry sauna! We've never seen this in all our travels! It was a fantastic amenity and treat that we loved. Even more shocked to find this loft suite has TWO bathrooms and two tubs, one of the tubs being a jet tub. The room seemed particularly well appointed and thought out for being a fully contained unit with a kitchenette. Eg rubbermaid mechanical floor and carpet sweeper was useful. We were especially impressed with the front desk staff, who all seemed super friendly, helpful and knowledgeable and surprisingly happy! The building and rooms were slightly dated, but this did not detract at all, since everything, including the couches and bed were super comfy. read more

The Good: Location, great. Walkable to most things. Private sauna in loft area. 2 bathrooms, though quite dated. Aside from being quite dark, the room itself was okay. Good to have a full kitchen. Unfortunately, the RODENT issue and super rude staff will prevent me from every staying there again, or recommending it to anyone. At first I thought I was seeing things moving on the floor, but then to my unpleasant surprise I looked up from my book to see a mouse running around the kitchen floor! It ran under the stove, and in looking under there I saw not only 2 other dead mice, but traps everywhere - the kitchen beside the couch, near bathroom. Jenny, who was the only AMAZING staff member, quickly came up and tried to catch it, placed more traps and tried to accomodate us, but said there were no other available rooms at the time. She also was the one to remove all the mice, dead or alive, and was super sweet. The bathroom is run down and dated, and clearly with a rodent issue it's safe to say the place isn't clean at all! Top it off with a very rude front desk reception, in particular IMANE, who was incredibly rude not only in person, but hung up on me twice on the phone when I tried calling to speak to the management. She lied multiple times, would not even provide me with a receipt (Jenny was able to do so later that day, no problem) and favored certain guests over others. When I told her about the rodent issue, all she had to say was "yes, we do have a problem. They are coming down from the mountain." No recourse at all. Imane alone would be a reason to NOT stay there, for fear of having to deal with her again. She wouldn't even give me the name of the manager or a contact saying "they are on vacation for 3 weeks so no one is available for you." With the exeption of Jenny (she needs a raise and promotion), none of the reception staff ever even looked up once when we entered or exited the lodge, and were not welcoming. This was all during a slower season, I can only imagine how bad it would be during prime season. Never staying there again. read more

Clean, spacious, and smack in the middle of whistler village! PARKING TIP: the hotel's parking is ~$22/night, we used the whistler outdoor parking (lots 4-5) that's only $5/day and ~10minute walk from the hotel. The parking lot is also free after 5pm-8am! Although staying in whistler during the summer peak month of July was pricey, Mountainside Lodge (executive) offered the lowest price amongst all the other hotels for the weekday that I was staying on booking.com The room had a spacious eating booth area, full kitchen (with appliances, cutlery, & cleaning supplies), comfy bed, fireplace, heater/AC, lots of storage space, and a great washroom. I would highly recommend this place especially if you're staying for a few nights since it seems like there's amenities for you to prepare your own meals & feels more homey! read more

$59/ night?! I just glanced at Jackie M's review. OMG. We paid a lot more. Not sure since my husband booked it but I think our room cost $200ish/ night? AHHHH!!!!! :( Okay, back to my review. The location is awesome! It is within walking distance to the ski hills (maybe 5 minutes) and is nestled within the village shopping and dining area. However, the rooms are kind of dark and a little run down. I think the decor is "cabin style" so there is a lot of dark maroon and burgandy type colours. The tile in the bathroom is made to look like brown brick. Not exactly my favourite. The bathtub also doubles as a jet tub if you need it to - but we never tested out the jets. I also think there is an outdoor jacuzzi but we never tested it out either. Our room had a murphy bed which was located in front of a remote control gas fireplace. There was also a kitchen area which had all the basic kitchen appliances - dishing washing machine, microwave, fridge, coffee maker, toaster, oven. There was also a table and a bench to sit and eat. There is an old t.v. and a dvd player. I also think there was a portable CD player on top of the t.v. but I never investigated. The sheets were nice and clean and smooth. The bed was comfortable. They will even provide you with a playpen at no additional cost. Parking was not free - there is a charge to park in the garage. Had I went on Yelp and read Jackie M's review, I could have saved our family money - DARN!!!!!!! Lesson learned :( read more

We had a nice time here. I can't really complain, I used timeshare points to book it and found it to be a good stay. It's not the 4 Seasons, but it was nice. We booked a studio room, which had a Murphy Bed. Super comfortable. Kitchenette was helpful, we grabbed groceries for breakfast food to save a little money while in town. And we bought coffee, but there was coffee in the room (a one pot packet, but I am sure we could have asked for replacements daily, so if you go shopping, skip coffee). The kitchen supplies were simple and not gourmet, but that's the deal when you stay in places with Kitchenettes. We had zero trouble with noise. One afternoon when returning to the room to get cleaned up after being on the mountain, we could hear the room next door having an in-room Apres situtation, but once we were in our own room and closed the door, we could no longer hear them. Was not a big deal. Staff was friendly, helpful, had good suggestions for where to go and find whatever we were looking for. Jacuzzi was relaxing, there were families and couples in it each time we went (every night of our stay, before showering for Dinner and whatever in the Village), it was not a Party scene at all. You can bring down non-glass beverages, of course...it was social, but not a "party" Parking was free since I used timeshare points, that was a bonus. It's walking distance from everything, nothing in the Village is really that spread out, so it was convenient and we had a nice stay. We don't really "hang out in our room" on vacation, so as I am sure there are more luxurious rooms to be had in Whistler, we don't care about that...it was nice, and we were there to be on the mountain, go out and be social in the Village, etc. A hotel room is a place to sleep when you're done partying, have some coffee when you wake up and get ready to do it all over again! read more

We stayed here during the Remembrance Day Long weekend. We originally had a regular room reserved, but then upgraded to a luxury suite for $132/night and it was totally worth it. PROS: -Inexpensive (for the quality, decor, etc) -No "extra guest" charges -Free wifi -Fully stocked kitchen (saved soooo much money on food) -Location. RIGHT at the Village! -DECOR!!! The rooms are very nice and modern. CONS: -It's a bit loud at night with all the partiers that are coming back from the clubs, but seriously, what do you expect when you're staying in Whistler Village? -$16 to park your car (so we found a free lot on the outskirts of the hotel zone) This place is seriously the best place to stay at in Whistler Village. Another friend of mine stayed here and had nothing but good things to say about it. It's cheap and super nice! I would definitely stay here again! read more

SHELL VACATION CLUB AND MOUNTAINSIDE RESORT DO NOT CARE ABOUT SR. CITIZENS! Shell Vacation Club AND Mountainside Resort at Whistler do not care about senior citizens, they don't care about health issues, they don't care about people, they only care about profit. My wife and I purchased a timeshare in 2006 at Whistler through Shell Vacation Club and we have never used it ONCE, even though we paid the mortgage loan balance in full at the time of purchase. We have paid them close to $20K and now due to health issues and disability and age we can no longer travel. We asked Wyndham (they now own our timeshare since Shell went bankrupt) if they had a program that would allow us to exit the contract, and they told us it was not possible and that we have to try and sell the timeshare. They sent us to their authorized re-seller who then told us that our timeshare unit had a negative value and it was not possible to sell. We continue to get bills for maintenance fees and club fees for something we have never used and have asked for Wyndham and Shell to work with us so that we can exit the contract but they refuse. Instead we get sent from one department to the other, Wyndham says they can't do anything because it is owned by Shell. Shell says they are bankrupt so they can't do anything, we have to call Mountainside Resorts at Whistler. Mountainside says they have nothing to do with it, call Shell. THIS IS A SCAM!!!! We signed the contract and have paid the money to them for 15 years. How can a publicly traded company that is worth hundreds of millions of dollars care so little about their clients??? Haven't you already made enough money off of us? Don't you have a heart and a soul for aging owners facing health issues? Don't you have a hardship program? We never knew this was a LIFETIME contract that we signed, we were told it was an investment and we could get out by selling but now we know it has negative value and that was a lie. Do the right thing and let us out of this contract now, there is no reason that we should pay you all of these fees for the rest of our lives when we will never be able to use the unit. read more

We love it here!! Our second time staying at the mountainside lodge and it won't be our last!! We were lured in by the cheap price found on hotels.ca $59/night! This time we went with the upgrade for and extra $20/night and found our self in "the loft" room with a very comfortable queen sized bed and a SAUNA in our room!! So cool. This place has everything you could need.. Kitchenette, 2 tv's, table for dining, comfty couches, 2 bathrooms.. It's just perfect! Only advice I will pass on is that parking is an extra $17/night which I found silly. We just parked across the street from the village in the day lots where it's FREE :D And no drama's!! read more

We really enjoyed our first visit to Whistler in June 2014, during which we stayed at Mountainside Lodge. The resort location is so convenient, just steps from restaurants, cafes, shopping, and activities. We watched mountain bikes run down that hill every morning -- those guys are insane! -- and we thoroughly enjoyed the sights in and around Whistler. We stayed in a one bedroom suite, which had two fireplaces and a jet tub for two. Some people *might* consider the suite to be small, when compared to American room sizes, but it fit us just fine. The staff here were very nice and prompt. There were some rude guests who let their kids run up and down the hallways, and the hotel staff tried to put a stop to the ruckus -- unfortunately the kids would hide whenever the staff came by, but we can't fault the hotel for that. We would definitely stay here again. (And hope for more courteous neighbors.) read more

This is the fifth hotel I've stayed in at Whistler and it is the best of what I would call the mid-range hotels. We had a loft suite which was nice because we had plenty of room. The loft floor had a sauna of all things! The main floor bathroom had a jetted tub which was great, a stocked kitchen and a small living room. The hotel also had a great outdoor pool and hot-tub. It is walking distance to everything and very close to some good restaurants. The staff was friendly and I didn't find it noisy at all. We chose not to pay the $18 for parking and just parked at one of the big lots which is about a 5 minute walk from the hotel. I don't give it a perfect score just because it is not of the same calibre as some of the higher end hotels around the village, but I would definitely stay here again. read more

Finally, a shell resort in a place I want to go. This location alone makes my timeshare worth it. The loft rooms they have here are prefect for two; however, I really enjoyed the one bedroom room. It offers more space and a two-person jacuzzi tub right in the bedroom. I only have two issues with this place: 1. It's hotter than hell inside (to the point where you have to shed your outer layers as soon as you walk in. 2. The walls are paper thin. We could hear loud children and conversations coming from the hallway, the rooms near us, and the outside pool area below. Other than that, this place is great! It's in a perfect location in the village, it has decent parking, good storage for both winter and summer sports, and the staff is friendly. Oh, some advice: take the stairs! We were there for six days and the elevator broke down at least once a day! read more

Find something better, this place isn't the Whistler experience you're looking for.. The drinking age in Canada is 19, and so a lot of the younger kids come up from the U.S. to party and that's great, but we experienced it first-hand since they all seemed to be staying at this hotel. First time drunks, partying till 4:30am, pretty ridiculous when the walls aren't soundproof and they're next door.. You get the picture. I usually don't care about these things, but when I spend good money ($250/night due to holiday weekend) and coming for the powder all the way from California, I want to get my rest. The management was great (all Canadian's we met were amazingly friendly and helpful by the way, and these guys were no exception) and after we complained they kicked out the other party and refunded us our first night in full and parking fee for the whole trip. That kind of made up for it, but still, this property is a ~$75-100 hotel, not a $250+ hotel, hence the two star review. Besides the great staff, the in-suite sauna was also pleasant and kind of made up for not being able to sleep at night. At the end of the day though, there's much nicer places to stay in Whistler if you're already spending the money to come out here. read more

I stayed here President's Day Weekend in 2011, and thought the place was great! We had a group of 10 with 2 rooms (each room was a 1 bedroom loft with 1 queen mattress, 1 queen pull out and 1 twin pull out). We fit 5 people / room, which was a tight squeeze but it worked out. For the same price, most rooms in Whistler will be cozier vs. rooms in the US. PROS: -No extra guest fees (most will charge one) -Inexpensive (for the quality, decor, etc) -Free wifi -Location: Steps to the Gondola, and in the heart of the Village. Very close to all the restaurants, bustling crowd! -Outdoor heated jacuzzi, and outdoor pool! It was a great source of relaxation for the group! CONS: -$16 / night + Tax to park your car (this fee will add up. Most places will charge a parking fee, some come w/ parking) -Might be pricey for 2 people sharing 1 room, but everything is pricey here. -Maybe too loud for older couples who want a quiet, serene vacation/ stay. The fist time I ever visited Whistler I stayed at Mountainside Lodge. I was so spoiled. It's not the nicest hotel in Whistler, but they pass that savings on to you. You can barely beat the location. You can see the slopes from your window which is a great incentive to get out of bed and onto the mountain. read more

This is an aging property that had lots of issues during our stay. Make sure you're not bothered by these (otherwise, stay elsewhere -Whistler has tons of other options): 1-shower temp fluctuates dangerously - i.e. can't take a hot shower without being scalded. Ended up taking a cold-to-warm shower because whenever the water was set at the desired hot temp, it'd cycle from cold to very scalding hot. Extremely disturbing to think that it could've been one of our kids taking the shower and being badly burned. 2-Maintenance came by and had great difficulty acknowledging the problem (also didn't know how to turn on the shower - I had to say "you pull the handle") -he finally admitted the temperature fluctuation and told me to bathe instead of shower (didn't pay to stay in a bath only room nor to be told that!) They said it couldn't be fixed so the evening manager offered to move us from a view room to the ground floor. Problem is she couldn't guarantee the new room didn't have the same problem and we decided it was too much of a hassle to change rooms with kids who were already in bed. 3-Returned one day after a long day of skiing around 5pm to find a note under our door saying: "We have just been informed that the water in the hotel will have to be shut off on Tuesday, Jan. 7 from 10am-6pm for some important maintenance work to be carried out. Thank you for your understanding and we apologize for any inconvenience." The evening manager said it's not related to fixing the shower temperature. NO drinking water, NO toilet, bath, etc. 4-after the water came back on, it ran yellow with debris. We ran it for about an hour and it didn't get better so we couldn't bathe the kids (didn't improve until the next day). 5-next day, housekeeping came by to tell us they were working for only another 30min because water was being shut off again from 10-5pm. No advance notice this time. After calling management, they said our wing's water would not be turned off. 6-However, later they advised us in advance that water would be turned off the following day from 10-5 or 6pm. 7-As another reviewer noted: we can confirm the hot tub outside is DISGUSTING - kids smelled awful afterwards (and it was not the chlorine). The next day, we saw the hot tub was drained and refilled but we didn't go back to try it. This property was booked through the Executive Inn-don't know what that building is like but this is the Mountainside Lodge building where Trattoria di Umberto restaurant (which is excellent) is located. It is obviously one of the oldest buildings here. Whistler Blackcomb has tons of rooms - try to consider others before going here. Unfortunately for us, this was the only place available for a full week and we're paying high season rates (unreasonably high given the extremely low quality we're experiencing). read more

Gotta admit we were really nicely surprised. We didn't have high hopes looking at photos and price was suspiciously lower than similar places. Walked in and the lobby supported that suspicion and the tiny hallways helped build the fear. But the rooms were really really nice. We had a one bedroom suite with a huge 2 person jet tub in the room, 2 bath, 2 fireplace, nice bed. They had a crib in the room for the ankle-biter so that was nice too. Would be perfect for ski season as it's about 100 metres from the Gondola to Blackcomb. Had a view of the pool which wasn't worth a crap, but overally a nice place. They just need to renovate that lobby and those crap hallways. Great for the price, especially in Whistler. read more

DO NOT EVEN WASTE YOUR TIME CONSIDERING THIS LOUSY HOTEL! Looks are deceiving. The murphy couch bed was by far the worst mattress I've ever slept on. Looks as if it's from the 70's when this place was built. Master bedroom is in the loft, not even a room. No storage at all in the master, just a very uncomfortable bed. Find somewhere else. Insanely slow wifi, cannot even load 5 seconds of a video in 360 quality without it freezing for 1-5 minutes. And don't even bother asking for house keeping since you have to pay for it!!! For rooms that are suppose to sleep 2-6 people, you only get one parking spot/pass for the garage! Elevator is slow and there is only one for the entire complex. Shower water was barely warm at it's hottest setting. Floors were not clean. The list goes on and on. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! read more

This was my first visit to Whistler. The Mountainside Lodge is actually quite comfortable. It is not a fancy, hi-end type hotel, but its location right next to the village lifts can't be beat. I don't know what the rooms usually go for as we came in on our timeshare. We also rode a shuttle in from Vancouver, so I can't comment on the cost of parking. I would say this isn't one of the nicest hotels around, but it is more than adequate, especially given its location (which raises it to 4 stars). Our room was one of the studios, which had a Murphy bed that was surprisingly very comfortable. For just two of us, the room was just fine. Nothing fancy but very adequate and overall clean. Kitchen had everything we needed for cooking and a nice little eating area, and it is only a very short walk to the grocery store as well. The room also had a gas fireplace and nice jacuzzi type tub. I had only two complaints....the bathtub had a little mold/mildew around the bottom at one end- not a lot, just enough for me to notice and think "hmmm, someone needs a little more attention to details". Second, the girl who worked the front-desk during the evening was rude. The first night I thought maybe she was just having a bad night. But, nope, next night, same lousy attitude.
