Call a day or two ahead to make a dinner reservation - it's a small and very popular place. I really enjoyed our smoked salmon starter, though we could've used more bread. My hake entree was great - loved the mushroom broth with it very much. The seafood casserole was also a hit, including a big crab claw in it. Kid's fish and chips were delicious as well. Tasty and affordable fresh seafood meal. We stopped by with a reservation for a meal for 2 at 7 PM, and the place was generally quite busy as there's not a ton of space. We split the seafood chowder and mussels to start, both of which were fresh and filled with seafood to eat. Our entrees were the sea bream and the seafood casserole, the former of which was a very fresh piece of fish and the latter similarly filled with fresh seafood. It's a fairly casual place with the tables close to each other and service not always on top of you but watching if you beckon. Overall, it's a nice, affordable seafood meal in Belfast. read more

Its situated next t o Kelly's Cellar, which is how I discovered it, and while it is a strange location to have a restaurant, you forget all about it once your inside! The chef's really know what they are doing in here and offer everything from crab, mussels, oysters to cod and chips! had the sea bass which was absolutely cooked to perfection and so good I could have gone for more! Absolutely DELICIOUS oysters (the vinaigrette sauce was so good I ate the leftovers with a spoon ), salmon, mussels, the best hake we ever had, amazing tiramisu (not sopped in alcohol - just right!), plus the nicest and most accommodating staff. Mourne Seafood Bar is one of the best restaurants in Belfast. It's an unassuming little restaurant in appearance and could easily be missed, as it's tucked away in a side street off Belfast's main shopping area. Inside it's warm and welcoming but unpretentious in decor. The food is second to none. They serve the best fish, chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce in the world. Sounds far fetched - but you need to try it to believe it - absolutely fabulous fish and chips. The salt and chilli squid is also delicious and there's a scrumptious wine and dessert selection. I've eaten in this restaurant dozens of times and relished every meal. Alas, I no longer eat fish, as I've now changed to a 'vegetarian lifestyle.' I took the mussels to start, instantly you can taste the quality of ingredients used rich fresh and fantastic. The main: sea bream, was superb, absolutely astounding. The fish was possibly the best fish main I have had for a very long time, incredibly well balanced fresh and tasty, the gods was so good, that I had to stop sipping my beer as it was ruining the experience. The staff were great: welcoming and accommodating, firstly for slotting me in and secondly for being so nice even when I was late. I will be back. We were looking for a place to get seafood and a friendly man outside the Crown Bar told us to go to Mournes. He had to spell it out because to my American ears it sounded like "Moores". Extremely fresh and delicious seafood. Had the oysters, both natural and japanese style, oyster shooters, fish and chips, squid, and ceviche. Everything was delicious and the prices are pretty reasonable. Hard to get a reservation but they sometimes have room in the upstairs bar. Its a little off the beaten track so be sure to ask someone for directions if you are going for the first time. read more

We were excited to get a reservation at Mourns since its on every top restaurant list. Its in a great location, right next to Kellys Cellar. Its small with great modern decor. Our server was incredibly knowledeable about the menu and wine list. Following her advice, we ordered a few small dishes (tapas style). So eventually managed to get in for a meal, so long as we were quick, as the place was prebooked and they needed the table. Ordered the Salmon and it wasn't much to write home about! This is a solid choice for eating out in Belfast. They are open on Mondays, unlike many restaurants in the city and we were grateful to be seated without a reservation (the restaurant was full). Dinner at Mourne Seafood Bar was a highlight of my recent visit to Belfast. Its fresh, local seafood served simply. I'd definitely agree with other reviewers, that this place doesn't look like much from the outside. Be careful or you'll end up in the rowdy bar right next to it. The entrance is a bit dark, and, as others have said, if you come at night the large stainless steel fish trays are empty, giving the confusing impression that you are entering through the kitchen. Never fear, dear eater, if you press on you will find a lovely interior that is very cozy and relaxed. Our dinner was superb. While they had a lot of daily specials, I ended up choosing a menu standby, mostly because I just couldn't choose one thing! I can't say enough about my seafood "casserole", which was really more of a stew than what most Americans would think of as a casserole. Large meaty chunks of salmon and whitefish mingled with whole mussels, clams, and crab legs, roasted potatoes, and fennel baked in a light tomato sauce. It was so fresh and the flavors were perfectly blended. I could have used a little more of the delicious bread to sop up the last of the juices. To top it all off, you have try their house-made beer, the oyster stout. Delicious! If you're not a beer fan, they have an extensive wine list as well. Thanks for a great evening! read more

I'm not a massive fan of fish. In fact before I visited this fabulous restaurant I would have even gone so far as to say that I hated fish - not anymore! I'm not going to claim that my visit to Mournes seafood bar changed my life - it didn't, but it did open me up to a new experience that I had been entirely reluctant to have. My friends convinced me to go and they would have gladly changed the venue if I had insisted, but I had heard so many great things about Mournes I decided to dive on in and bite the trout! We went on a Wednesday as far as I recall and the place was bunged, my mates booked it a week in advance because they had heard it gets really busy and apparently lunch is based on first come first served as well because the demand is high. As we approached I could see all the fresh fish on display in the window and was slightly worried about how much toast I would probably have to eat later to fill myself up. The menu came and I will admit I was scared of everything. I put this fish fear down to years of living with parents who never ate fish and convinced me it was the devils delicacy. I'm ashamed and regretful to say that I didn't get a starter because I didn't like the sound of anything they had to offer. Man, that was a mistake as I sat there with my mouth open and dribbling at the amazing looking plates of food my friends had. I'm a silly sardine. Right, here goes - my main course arrived and I was ravenous from all the delights around me. I'd just decided to go for it and so I ordered Mourne's seafood casserole consisting of mixed seafood with fresh tomato sauce, potatoes, fennel, thyme and garlic and grilled focaccia. Oh my yummy! The mixture if all the little gems from the ocean was beautiful and the meat was succulent, fresh and almost melting in my mouth. The trimmings were also cooked to perfection. The price was perfection as well - only £13.00 for a great big feed. Since my wonderful experience at Mournes I have not been back (I will be) but I have developed a liking for fish and now eat it once a week at least - don't tell my parents they would be horrified! read more

I am not a fan of seafood, at all. So when I was dragged along to Mourne Seafood Bar for lunch I was less than enthusiastic. It's location was also a little strange. It's stuck in between the back of a large supermarket and a shopping centre where some of the local homeless like to chill with their finest cheap cider and shout at each other. Inside it takes you away from it's obscure backstreet settings into a well presented classy little bistro. Sadly, it was a classy little bistro where I just didn't fancy anything on the menu. They did however, have a locally Mourne brewed stout which was to be my very liquid lunch for today. My friends loved the food and couldn't get enough, looking at me as if I have 2 heads because I wouldn't dare try it. After going to Kelly's Cellars for a series of alcoholic drinks, I vaguely remembered saying that we had to come back and try this place which is located right beside it. But rather than ignore everything I usually suggest, we actually remembered to come back here. And I am so glad we did. The food is simply out of this world (or out of the sea... ba dum...) The restaurant has a nice rustic local feel as you would expect with the food being sourced locally. Though it isn't quite flashy and complex decorated, it is the food that makes this place stand out. You don't go to sit in nice seats. You go to have some of... scratch that... the finest fish in Belfast bar none. We got a seafood platter to share as a starter, and then I got a prawn linguine as I have a bit of a prawn craving roughly once a week where only an over-dose of prawns will suffice. I washed it all down with Guinness which I'll be honest was a terrible idea because the whole food began to curdle in my stomach so my top tip is if you go here (which you definitely should) you should try to avoid drinking anything heavy. And with a tab of £40 for two people, it was not as expensive as we thought when we went in, it was a fantastic meal over all. read more

You'd think having a white fish allergy would somewhat preclude me from eating here, but alas, shellfish and other assorted seafood is something I adore. I've been here on a couple of occasion, all of which have been fantastic. The restaurant is a modest sized, welcoming affair. Painted wood, bare wood tables and chairs and a selection of paintings on the wall (some of which are for sale) The menu is a mixture of fresh fish, seafood and a couple of meat dishes. It does however change regularly with the addition of daily specials (usually freshly caught fish of the day) This is not a plaice (can you see what I did there?) where you're likely to see frozen fish... everything, is caught on the day or within a day or so, during the day the front of this place is actually a fishmongers... which is great. The mussels are some of the best in the city (although I still prefer my own) Bathed in a light, creamy sauce filled with white wine and fresh herbs they are moist, dense and superb. You can't go wrong here, if you do pop in do not leave without trying the Oyster Stout, brewed for them by the fantastic Whitewater Brewery. It's essentially an Irish dry stout with oyster shells in the mash, it really works and it's a style that's been around for many a day. read more

Firstly, the restaurant itself lacked atmosphere, I thought - the bar downstairs seemed a lot more lively but the restaurant seemed to have lots of dead space and it didn't seem very polished or put together. I had mussels, which were tasty and I was pleased with. My boyfriend had a special, which ended up being essentially fish and chips, but the fish was in a slightly spicy batter and the chips also had some spices on. Seemed a bit blah (and on top of that wasn't that clear from the description - my boyfriend had been after something pan fried rather than battered and deep fried, so it was far heavier than he wanted). read more

Amazing seafood ....and Irish ribeye. Mourne seafood casserole was packed with an assortment of shell fish, swimming fish, fresh tomato sauce, potatoes, fennel, thyme, garlic, and grilled fococcia! Because we were on tourist food overload and yearned for good, clean food, the minute that I saw that they had local, organic veggies, I swooned! They, too were fabulous! The Champ were your basic mashed potatoes, but with the addition of spring onions, they were over the top. The optional bread basket was a nice assortment including Guinness bread. We could not finish it and saved it for lunch tomorrow! The sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream was a total num / num for both of us. Service was excellent.
